When looking back in the decade of teams and players that have come through Virginia Tech, it is simply amazing how much talent and athleticism we have been fortunate enough to display on Saturdays in Maroon and Orange. Numerous players have gone on to play in the NFL and have been successful. Ive compiled a list of my recommendations for 1st Team All Decade of Dominance for Virginia Tech. Joe/French- youre input on others that should be on first team would be appreciated. Prehaps BillDozer and/or MSTrawther could put together a highlight video of the players that we could reach a consensus on having a spot on the 1st team.
Note: For Offense, I chose to have 2 RBs and 2 WRs with 1 TE. For Defense, I chose to have 3 LBs, and 4 DBs. I mean we are the real DBU right??

I take it you're basing this on the entire body of work, and not just performance against LOLUVA.
Would be neat to do a "best of" list just for those 10 games also.
Yea, had thought about looking at career stats vs. LOLUVA - that would be cool to see.
Aaron Rouse is a SS.
Correct, I put him at LB only because of the way he was used - more of a SS/LB/Rover. He was all over the field.
yeah, but you're forgetting what a beast Vince Hall was.
Somebody call 9-1-1.
J Boykin (flex)
I am not seeing a SAM ROGERS (its obviously a misprint)
This list is bogus!!!!
It may be blasphemous in 2013, but unless I'm guaranteed an injury free player, I'd prefer 2011 Jayron to Kyle.
I think I am with you on that one!!
2011 Hosley was banged up a lot that season.
2010 Jayron playing field corner, opposite of 2007 Brandon policing the boundary, along with 2009 Kam knocking the snot out of anything that dares to come over top is just scary.
Think we could get a second coming of that scenario with Facyson, Fuller, and _________?
Fisher, inc.
Macho Harris?
Greg Boone at tight end on any list. I don't care how good of a tight end he actually was, running the Wild Turkey is still the greatest thing Stinespring ever did. We need to run it with Kalvin Cline.
On that note - we could sure use another player with the last name that has an "OOOO" sound... we're on a dry spell...
HUUUUUMMMES
BOOOOONE
HUUUGHES
FOOOOOORD
ANDREEEEWWWWW
...or does that look/sound too much like "ew" instead of "ooo?"
nope - phoneticized: AN'DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ROOOOOOOOGERS
I think we're more likely to see it with Sam Rogers than Kalvin Cline. We've already seen that the coaches are confident enough in SR to let him throw it. The key to the Wild Turkeykat isn't to have a TE doing it. It's to have someone who isn't the QB doing it. Hell, you could line up a DE if it was fat guy touchdowns that you're after. But the point is that you just need not the QB. There are other elements too of course. Like the fact that it's usually based around a single wing style offense with an unbalanced line, but for the purposes of this discussion that's unimportant.
The next key factor to consider after who the coaches have already shown confidence is is experience when talking about this sort of thing. Greg Boone was a quarterback in highschool. We converted him into a tight end (the pros have since converted him to a full back up in Canada, but that's neither here nor there). Kalvin Cline played tight end and defense end in highschool, not quarterback. Do you know who did play quarterback in highschool? Sam Rogers.
If we reintroduce the Wild Turkey, our best option at the QB is Sam Rogers. That being said, part of the fun of the Wild Turkeykat is the crazy bullshit that you get to do from it. You could line up Sam Rogers at QB because that's what everyone is expecting, snap it to Trey Edmunds, lateral it to Kalvin Cline, throw it to Andrew Ford.
D. Hop for #FATTURKEY formation!
#FATGUYTOUCHDOWN
Skip's a senior.
Then lateral it to the official, pick him up and carry him into the endzone. Now that would be some crazy bullshit.
In my opinion, the Wild Turkey was run to specifically make the QB a wrecking ball capable of destroying smaller defenders if they got outside the edge, and big enough to move the pile in between the tackles (at a minimum) for a few yards. The threat that they 'might' throw added a wrinkle. This was also to spell smaller Qb's who you didn't want to take those hits (Tyrod). They have been running the wild turkey for years... Logan.
WHen he leaves, they might go back to it, but its been in place for awhile. Look at the measurements for Boone and LT, they have to be close.
= "Miley Cyrus Package"
For sure. We haven't had a need for the Wild Turkey. Everything we need from it is in our base package. Moving forward though, it will be nice to have a change up.
Great List! I think I would put Vince Hall over Rouse in the LB/Hybrid spot - He might be the best LB in the Foster Era.
as much as i love Kyle I think i'd probably give Macho the nod before him though. Please don't murder me TKP.
They're both good.
That diving interception against GT puts him on every list ever. Even a list of most influential British Prime Ministers.
It depends on what you go for. Kyle seems to be the "I'll knock the ball out of the air" to keep the catch from happening guy, where Macho was a "BOOM MUTHAFUCKA, IF YOU CAN HOLD IT AFTER THIS, YOU DESERVE THAT BALL" kind of guy.
Macho made a ton of plays at corner the year he was the feature DB. I think I like Fuller because he was more sound open-field tackler and seemed to be a bit more physical (opinions). Fuller is better all around, but Harris was also a return man who changed games. If I had to choose, I'd take Harris' one year over Fullers best year, but I don't think you can go wrong here.
I'd put Vince Hall at LB over Rouse. Hall and Adibi were dominant together. And when you add Cody Grimm to the mix...THAT's a scary linebacking corps!

Plus 1 for Marcus Vick - I have an autographed picture of him hanging in my basement.
Plus one for Fuck Miami!
It appears you've added one year to everyone's last season? Jonathan Lewis was a senior in '05. DT on the '06-07 teams were Carlton Powell and Barry Booker. I'd agree that Lewis and Hopkins were the best DTs in the decade. Worilds entered the draft after the '09 season.
Well that's the year they "graduated" or "left" the team. Like Logan, for example, his last season will be the 2013 season but he will graduate in 2014, if he hasn't already. Anyway that's when he will leave the team.
You give him some of the best talent we've had on the offense the last decade, and I'll take Logan as the QB.
I love Logan to death, but Tyrod is my pick all day everyday, including in NFL fantasy football. And no, my team doesn't do well. Thanks for asking.
Hard not to put Jayron Hosley on the list after that 2010 season he had.
Agreed. So many times that season, we had come-from-behind wins because of clutch defensive plays from him. 9-picks!
Very true - good call. Hosley should have been on the list.
But really, there have been so many great Hokie CBs in that time period, it's probably the most difficult pick of all.
Al Groh for coach, Mike London for team chaplain
For the RB, in terms of rushing stats only, here are your big players: (Order is in my opinion of who performed the best vs UVA only). This excludes receiving yards or TDs if any (didnt have time to look during lunch). Also didnt have time to get down yards/carry.
1. Ryan Williams: 183 yards, 4 TD, 1 game
2. Cedric Humes: 208 yards, 4 TD, 2 games
3. David Wilson: 290 yards, 4 TD, 3 games
4. B. Ore: 262 yards, 2 TD, 2 games
5. D. Evans: 142 yards, 2 TD, 2 games
6. T. Edmonds: 93 yards, 0 TD, 1 game
7. George Bell: 41 yards, 1 TD, 1 game
8. K. Lewis: 79 yards, 0 TD, 1 game
There were a couple others that got in the game, but I just provided significant stats above. (I think Dustin Pickle had some yards here and there)
Ryan Williams went HAM against LOLUVA! One of his better 1 game performances of his career!
I remember him looking giddy at the end of that '09 game.
I still grit my teeth about what Brandon Ore "Could've" been....
I miss C. Humes...he was a beast.
What about Imoh? I thought he was around in 2004-2005
He only recorded per espn's box score 22 yards, 0 TD, in 1 game (2004). He must have been injured for the 05 game. Ore got 115 yards and 2 TDs in the 2005 game so he must have taken his place from how i remember
I'm guessing with the kicking game, you're not expecting this team to be within three points of the opponent.
Pace might have had all sorts of streaks and records, but every time the field goal would have changed the lead, he would miss.
With this team, or any substituion proposed, it would have been a National Championship caliber team. Pace was a heck of a kicker, but we have had some good ones since him too...
Kam was a bruiser, but I felt that he was a liability in coverage as a FS. I'd take DJ Parker over him at that spot...or possibly Jarrett. I'd also sub in Hall for Rouse.
Doesn't seem to have a problem with that in the NFL.
To jcpvt's point, I do agree. I remember Kam having some setbacks trying to cover.
Yeah he used to be called Kam the Sham.
Just have memories of Alabama throwing all over him in 2009.
Coale is awesome but Boykin was the better WR
Boykin was great at fighting for tough possessions and Coale was great at getting open. Both are sorely missed receiving options for us.
IIRC Danny didn't drop anything catchable his last year.
Boykin definitely wasn't very good with his hands starting out. He developed, and developed well, but I still think Coale was the better WR. It's the slimmest of margins though.
I remember his last year at Tech when he broke the yardage and catches records at Tech thinking "Sure, though if he would actually catch even HALF of what's thrown his way, he would have had all those records LAST year, and be breaking NCAA records THIS year."
Boykin, that is...Coale caught everything thrown in his reachable vicinity.
And even a few that weren't.
These are the top stats for just the LOLUVA games 2004-2013, still working through the defense

Nice work!
The lack of Tyrod Taylor in the QB/passing category speaks to our "evolving" (or reacting?) offensive style over the years. We think of TT in such high regard, and rightfully so, but so much time was split with SG, and on QB scrambles, and handing off to RW & DW (see the first category). LT is one of the few full time QB's we've had over the last 10-15 years (with respect to splitting time or moving on early), and has been forced/asked to throw it around a lot more.
We currently run the "Oh shit, Logan, make something happen" scheme.
TT was our sole QB for the final 2 years of his career. But, I suppose he never had that breakout game against LOLUVA, just let the rest of the team do his bidding.
Here are the Passing stats overall for the DoD.
Here are the summarized rushing stats for the DoD. All stats came from Hokiesports.com
VS. UVA in the #DecadeofDominance, we've rushed for a combined 2,026 yards....
#WHORUNNIT?
Yeah but, how many on 3rd down?
How does Jarrett Boykin have one TD on zero carries?
Fumble recovery in the endzone, most likely.
Yep, 2009. RMFW ran for 50+ yards, fumbled, and Boykin recovered in the endzone.
I wouldn't have thought of that as rushing. That's why I was confused.
Here are the receiving stats against LOLUVA during the DoD. All stats from Hokiesports.com
Here is the summary of all purpose yardage. Couple of interesting lines since this doesn't credit Passing towards QBs, Glennon has a -3 total. All stats from Hokiesports.com
