Bobo reportedly turns down VT OC job

First I've heard of this, apparently originally reported by ESPN's Mark Schlabach. Noticed this on the UGA Recruiting Nation site via ESPN. (http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/georgia/post/_/id/15243/bobo-el...)

'Mark Richt received what could be called the best news of the 2013 recruiting cycle last week when junior quarterback Aaron Murray decided to return for his senior season instead of declaring for the NFL draft. That was not the only good news Richt received last week.

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo also turned down an offer to become the offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, according to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. A plane was sent by Virginia Tech to Ben Epps Airport in Athens, Ga., to pick Bobo up for a meeting in Blacksburg, Va. Bobo never got on the plane.

According to Schlabach’s sources, Bobo was head coach Frank Beamer’s first choice to replace offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Bryan Stinespring. Bobo has known Beamer for years and is close friends with Shane Beamer, the associate head coach of the Hokies and Frank Beamer’s son.

Stinespring is still on the Virginia Tech staff, but the Hokies’ scoring offense was ranked No. 81 in the nation last season. The Hokies finished at 7-6 with a 4-4 ACC record.

Bobo and Murray combined to lead the Georgia to its highest offensive output in school history as the Bulldogs averaged 37.79 points per game. Bobo’s contract expires this summer, but athletic director Greg McGarity indicated that the contract was under review now.

“Coach Richt and I have conversations at the appropriate time regarding his entire staff and those talks are ongoing as we speak,” McGarity said.

McGarity would not say if Bobo was in line to get a multi-year deal. So far only defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is the only assistant coach with a multi-year contract.'

Sounds like

Bobo used this as a "Gee, how much more can you pay me?" moment with the GA AD.

Let me get this straight. He lets them fly a plane down to pick him up, but doesn't even board the plane. I don't believe that for a second.

Especially if the ties with him and the Beamers are so close. You wouldn't just disrespect them like that.

"Multiple" strategy

Actually this may have been a "strategic" move by Beamer and Co. We are using a "multiple" approach. Basically we are sending planes everywhere and trying to lure OCs onto it with promises of bourbon and turkey legs. Bobo apparently was too smart to fall for it though...much like every single DC we faced this year...(except for Duke).

Maybe this was attempted retribution for trying to poach Bud Foster a few years ago.

If he did reject a plane we sent for him...

That's kinda bobo...

On a side note

This guy wasn't the inspiration for the Aerosmith album "Honkin on Bobo" was he?

2 cents

Living in Atlanta affords me the opportunity to witness WAY more UGA football coverage than any non-UGA fan should see. Furthermore, most of my friends are UGA grads/fans. I can tell you that when news of VT looking to Bobo to guide our offense, my UGA buds made it a point to call/text/email me saying, "YOU CAN HAVE HIM!!"

UGA fans absolutely love Bobo from his playing days, but consider him their version of O'Cainspring. Ask any Georgia fan, and they'll tell you (ad nauseum) how they're only this close to winning a national championship, but the only thing holding them back is Bobo's playcalling.

While I believe that almost any OC hire for us will be an improvement, had we hired Bobo, the state of Georgia would've collectively cackled for a top tier program taking their trash off their hands for them. Glad it didn't work out.
