Hokie Uniform question

I know the season is ramping up quickly because a ton of teams are having new uniforms leaked.

With that being said, are you guys in the group that likes our LSU style uniforms with new hats seemingly every game or would you like a complete overhaul a la WVU?

In my opinion, I'd pull the simple Mike Vick era jersey pants combo with maybe a couple specialized helmets (Maroon liquid metal anyone?)

And one super special uniform for the season, but make it good. I've always thought incorporating a black and grey uniform would be awesome.

Just random thoughts.

My one special uniform combo would be similar to the Military Appreciation Day wore last fall, and that should be the ONLY special combo. I also liked the black/orange uniform wore against Boise State (the game we should have won, grumble, grumble).

I am not a fan of Oregonizing Virginia Tech's uniforms or Planking uniforms like Maryland which makes them look like they were sponsored by Heinz.

Give me #allmarooneverything for home games, and away games, give me white jersey with maroon numbers, and white pants with maroon stripes, and be done with it.

Do away with the stupid color effect games. We are proud of our school colors, damn it, and quit whoring to Nike.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

i personally dont really want #allmarooneverything for every home game. i want it to be special, like in 2006 against clemson. away games absolutely all white. i get that a lot of the "older" fans like the mv7 era unis, dont think we need to go back to that though. I would personally would like a simple yet modern uniform. marron with either minimal orange striping or lettering. white numbers with orange outline. then marron numbers orange outline on the away. boise something like these boise. obv with maroon instead of black and orange/white instead of blue/white. then just a classic helmet

I hate to respond on my own thread, but the Orange and Maroon effects are abysmal. Not only do I barely think about it, the shirts are fuckin' cheesy and lame. We tried taking something that Penn State did much better than anyone and square pegged it as much as we could.

Also, does anyone think the new AD would let "Stick it In" happen again? I really miss that. :(

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

penn does it better because everyone that goes to the game is handed a white shirt when they walk into the stadium. for not doing that, weather permitting, we pull off the effect pretty well

#BEATOHIOST

I still struggle to understand why our market department doesn't do that.

I've always argued that they need to do this for at least one effect game. Just get a sponsor or two, put them on the back of the shirt, and give free shirts to everybody. Or bump the ticket price up $5 for the game and give shirts at the gate.

Virginia Tech's football marketing department is notoriously lame and unimaginative. This was the same "marketing research" that Weaver quoted for years about why we couldn't paint the end zones on the new field. It's the same marketing genius behind no Thursday night game. "Because lame-marketing-reason" is a meme with my alumni friends.

As far as Stick It In goes, I believe the MV director would have to bring it up with the new AD. I wouldn't count on it being brought back though. Older donors disliked it and complained and when they are donating several thousand dollars at least if not tens or hundreds of thousand, their voice is a little louder than the average fan at the games. One can still hope it will return though.

How about we bring it back when we're the older fans donating several thousand dollars.

Gimmie dose '03 vs. Miami all-maroons. For every game.

maroon

those are soo fondly remembered partially because of the big game nature in which they were always worn. i want #allmarooneverything back very badly, but i still want it to be special for big games

Correct - the maroon jersey should be standard. Wear it with white pants for day games. All maroon for big night games. I also like the look of maroon pants with white jerseys for away games. The all whites make us look like Texas on TV.

Completely agree. This is quintessential Tech.

I dig the current LSU-style unis (as you called it). They look clean and classic. Adding an all maroon look for home games is great, but can we please, PLEASE never let this shit happen ever again?! PLEASE?!

Don't get me wrong, my age has nothing to do with the uniform style, but you guys maybe onto something. I equate those uniforms to National Championship appearances and possible Heisman winners. It's hard not to want that time frame back.

That being said, I love the idea for the Boise uniform. Those really are sick. I always hoped for a maroon version of the white pro combats, which is basically what we are after.

i love the current uni's - minus the orange version, but i do think the pants need stripes with the maroon jerseys.

Another question: What's the overall opinion on pride stickers for us? It's not in the works or anything, just wondering how key players would feel about us getting into the whole pride sticker thing. I think it would be cool but I can't figure out what I'd like to see used for them. Hokie tracks is the best thing I can think of but I always thought the hokie tracks are kind of girly and I'd hate for our helmets to be full of girly stickers. VT logos would be too cliche. Maybe the retired TV logo? Any thoughts?

Maybe the old gobbler logo? Just imagine Jack Tyler making a tackle for a loss and yelling "YOU JUST GOT GOBBLED, BITCH!" (I'll show myself out for that one)
Maybe the old gobbler logo?

Pretty sure the Fighting Gobbler logo has been discontinued from everything related to the university, as of last semester.

yeah i know, but i can still dream about it being a pride sticker!

@historyhokie.bsky.social

Took me a minute to realize what you meant by pride stickers. First thought that came to my head was about making a political statement and rainbow Hokie Feet. In reference to what you are actually talking about, I'm opposed to the stickers on the helmets. I think it looks stupid. Ohio State just looks like they have a bunch of pot leaves on their helmets. I'd rather see scratches and missing paint on helmets from hard hits and fighting for extra yards than a bunch of stickers.

Incorrect. The OSU stickers look like a bunch of little a$$holes. Which I always thought was pretty fitting.

In seriousness though, I agree that pride stickers aren't something that needs to be brought to VT. Just my opinion though...

I like the idea and always thought that orange Hokie tracks would look bad ass with our #allmarooneverything. Of course I've been thinking about it since 2000 when we actually had #allmarooneverything.

That would mean sticking to one helmet for the entire season. We all know that isn't going to happen.

I've always been on/off about the stickers. I think I'd be fine with them if done right. Maybe little lunch pails??? (that might just make it a defensive thing though)

β€œI ought to punch UVa people in the neck. Don’t ever come on my show and brag about your football.”

How about little lunch pails for the D, and turkey legs or small old-school gobblers for the O & special teams?

or Turkey Legs!

all maroon everything

Just suggested this on the helmet post....I like the idea of using award stickers for performance, (example I used on the other post was OSU). The use of this has a little history at Tech....they were used in the Dooley era (back when old guys like me were in school). The chosen shape then was stars. Submitted for your approval...Cyrus Lawrence

Cyrus Lawrence has my approval. But I'd prefer little turkey legs. Not turkey tracks, turkey legs.

Perhaps horses on treadmills?

First of all, all helmets need to be done away with except for the maroon VT helmet and I will explain why:

Tradition. Intimidation. When alabama rolls into town you don't see them wearing flashy new uniforms...same with all the historic programs. Virginia Tech, in the past 2 decades has earned the right to be part of that contingent of hard-nosed winning football programs. A winning program and staff will do exponentially more to recruit 5 star players than a new "fresh" uniform. Last, when you leave at least one thing the same (i.e. helmets) you give the other team something to remember you by...so when you play again you look like the same opponent that demolished them in years past.

Secondly, orange is our secondary color and it should stay that way. The orange uniforms need to be done away with regardless of what game it is. I don't mind a military jersey or whatnot, but just keep the helmets consistent.

Third, home uniforms should be maroon jerseys, white (or orange, since we are the ONLY school that can do that combo) pants, and away should be white on white. For BIG home games, maroon on maroon (seriously, only once a year for maximum effect...preferably thursday night since it looks scary. For BIG away games, white with maroon pants.

As for helmet stickers, not opposed but I just want the Hokies to make their own tradition. I thought the black uniforms looked cool and would accept them maybe once every few years, but as a coach, if my players were getting their motivation from the uniform that they are wearing, then I am doing something wrong. New uni's are cool, but they mean nothing if you lose. I don't mind modernizing, but keep it simple, make the maroon prominent but don't forget about the orange.

Welcome! Also, agreed!

I agree.

I want our color to be focused solely on maroon.
Orange is for UVA.

the thing is BC and FSU play on a maroon and gold theme, UVA, Clemson, Syracuse, Miami all have orange...but no one has maroon and orange. I don't mind having orange on our unies, but maroon has got to be the primary...none of this white vs. orange spring game crap. What are the shirts that sell the most? maroon and white ones...

I was playing around with the Virginia Tech uniform builder here earlier today:
http://www.cruhland.com/uniforms/#Uniforms

These are the combonations I came up with. I ended up using the Maroon and White 2008 Jerseys, The 2010 Pro Combat Pants, the 2003 Maroon Pants, the 2010 Maroon Helmet , Maroon/Black sleeves, and Black Socks. Pants and Sleeves would be interchangeable, If I had to pick a pair of white pants, I would go with the 2009 Pro Combat white.

Edit: I thing the Black and Gray mentioned in the initial post would be a good Military Appreciation uniform.

Why the black pants?

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

No deep reason, just going with what I thought looked good. As I said, the pants and sleeves could be switched out for different games. Going back and looking at it now, I would probably switch the sleeves and keep black with black pants and maroon with maroon pants.

I'm not fond of the home combination but love the away combo.

@vtscottyb

I always liked the maroon pants w/white jerseys for away games.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Yeah, the black pants really can't go with anything other than a black jersey.

That being said, we need a black uniform with grey font a la the TAMU Black & Golds.

I just want our classic helmets back. :( The ones Deangelo Hall and DW4 are wearing in the images above.

but if we wear the SAME helmet every week how we will be able to create brand recognition? #weaverthinking

2013 uniforms
my favorites

I can't decide which military one I like better but I definitely don't like wearing white at home. For the 2013 uniform set, I am not a fan of wearing a lot of orange, but for an orange effect game or a semi-big game, I don't mind the orange pants since we are the only ACC school that can pull that off. For BIG games, as you can see, maroon on maroon or white on white. Period.

My favorite uniforms are the older ones....I love how much maroon they have and they still have orange. I think I would like the ACC patch moved to the right shoulder and maybe modernize the numbers a bit. But regardless or the modern numbers, those numbers still look decent. Overall keep the maroon helmet for all games except, perhaps, military appreciation.

EDIT: HELP, I am having trouble getting the pics to stay up...any suggestions?

The ones in the top left are hands down my favorite, maybe wear white or orange sleeves instead of maroon. The ones below that should be our away jerseys every game.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

The very top left, I chose to do all maroon pants just to solidify the maroon look. I was at a thursday night game where it was foggy, cold and maroon effect. The team came out in all maroon and the crowd was SO loud...it was the most eerie, terrifying feeling to be at that game and I can not imagine being the other team..I really only like all-maroon for one big game...Don't over do it.

I would like an alternate that is all grey pants and jerseys. I think the stripes on the sides of the pants and shoulders should be maroon and the numbers on the front and back of the jersey should be maroon.I would like VPI on the front in maroon. The names on the back and numbers on the sleeve in orange. Helmets should be flat gray (similar to the bowl game only grey)with maroon VPI with orange outline. Always thought that would be cool alternate look to wear one time a year at night. Just thought I would share my opinion. I have thought about that idea for years.

Win one for the Beamer...

How about instead of just grey, we do Hokie Stone?!?!

What I'd like to see this year.

The bottom two are for big games. The all maroon would be for UNC I guess, and the all white would be for Miami or GT Thursday night

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

If there was one helmet I would be willing to use other than the maroon VT or possibly military, it would be that white one. That being said, I still don't like switching the helmet, but it's not bad. If there were more games I wouldn't be opposed to switching but there are 12 games in a season, 13 if you make the championship game and 14 if you go to a BCS bowl, for now. Last year hokies had different helmets for, I think, 7 or 8 games. There is no brand development in that. If they are going to switch the helmet, maximum of 1 or 2 times, no more.

But these are my favorite uni's in the past decade, and I definitely like using solid maroon pants and solid white with those jerseys. The stripes on the pants add too much IMO.

Well yea, this would only involve 2 helmet changes. One for the military appreciation (the orange digital camo), and the white one for a special away game.

I'm in the minority here, but greatly prefer our 'LSU' style jerseys over the '03 all maroon ones. I don't like the number style/font (especially the orange numbers on the shoulder), and I don't think those jerseys incorporate enough orange in them either. The shoulder stripes are about as traditional looking as you can go, and they provide just the right amount of orange.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

I agree, as well, I like our jerseys now more than the 03's, however if the numbers on the 03's could be changed and a few things tweaked, it would be my favorite. As it stands, the ones we have now are probably my favorite.

Also welcome to TKP fellow AOE

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

What exactly does everyone mean by "LSU style jerseys"?

referring to the similar shoulder striping between LSU and our jerseys

vt

These people are losing their minds!

Gotcha, thanks.

I don't particularly like these types of shoulder stripes, but at the same time I don't hate them. I don't like the helmet stripes at all though, the white stripes are much too thick.

I don't like the shoulder stripes either.

What we wear right now for most games. The should stripes and the stripe down the leg are considered "LSU style."

Edit: Oops. I didn't refresh the page when I did this. Got beaten to the punch here.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

the only reason why i dont overly like the striped sleeve is because they are synonymous with LSU, and even Ole Miss has those. I'd rather we have our own style, which would be the '03. I do like the white helmet with VT on it. I like that matte maroon helmet with the old school gobbler on it too.

I don't really like the shoulder stripes on the newer Jerseys, prefer the 2004/2008 jerseys.

Bring back the Gobbler!

love it!!!!!

@AMB4VT

we have found the winning combo... this rules

Save a collar, pop a Wahoo

Fanfuckingtastic.

Just give us what we want. We will buy it. Remember the single orange sleeve that started this trend? I was on the phone to the bookstore he say they were announced dropping 80 bucks for a Marcus Vick jersey.

A grey and maroon jersey (nike already has a jacket in this color way for us) would sell quicker than he black and white pro combat together.
