6:00 AM Workouts Are Happening

As is tradition, BeamerBall.com lists the top performers / shirt earners for each sessions.

Three players earned standout effort awards for Monday morning's session: J.R. Collins, Kyle Fuller, and Kyshoen Jarrett. They will wear a special T-shirt at Tuesday's 6 a.m. session designating them as the team pace-setters. Those three players are also now in the running to score a perfect 5 out of 5 during this week's sessions.

Let's see if all 3 go 5 / 5.

A closer look at the workouts:

A quick Q&A with football strength coach Jarrett Ferguson

I sat down with Jarrett Ferguson, Virginia Tech's Director of Strength and Conditioning for Football, for a story I'm doing a little bit down the line. But I also asked him about the Hokies' offseason conditioning program. He had some interesting stuff to say, so I thought I'd post it.

AB: How has the offseason program gone so far?

JF: "We had probably one of the best training cycles where the guys wanted to get it in and get the training regimen done. So the guys came in and they knocked it out. No skipping or anything. They did everything to a T, every rep, every set. That helps us out when the guys want to do it."

AB: When do you start that?

JF: "When school starts, we usually give them time to get their class schedules and stuff, and then we start. We had such a long break. We came back. They had that Monday off and then we try to get them into the program and try to get them into groups and stuff."

AB: Do you hit it hard from the beginning?

JF: "We jump right in, because you basically have seven weeks to train before the spring break. So what we do is train six weeks, seventh week is testing week. So with that, we jump right into it. We kind of scale it down. With coach [Mike Gentry], we do a periodization scheme, so they start off with a little higher reps and then we gradually progress down. And the reps go down and the weight goes up every week."

AB: On the video on Frank Beamer's site, it looks like you do three-rep maxes on some lifts.

That's a really great read, thanks for sharing. Good news that Edmunds and Caleb are having strong showings. Receiver and tailback are two positions up for grabs and it's great that two highly recruited and talented guys seems to be positioning themselves for playing time.

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but in the future would you not copy and paste an entire article here. Copying and pasting what you think the most important parts are, or the start of the story with a link to the rest, is how it should be done. Bitter and other writers put a lot of time into their work, and wholesale copy and paste takes the eyes (and page views) away from their sites. Thanks!

Oh I'm sorry

haha just kidding! I'll remember that in future replies

Much appreciated. Thank you Sir! Oh, and we love America.

But people who still read the ACC blog on ESPN should totally do that. Just not for Bitter & other actual reporters...

Turkey leg for you, good sir.

I've always wondered how they "measure" the effort for those awards. Must be pretty difficult, since only 3 guys out of 85 scholarship players made it.

I was gonna say the same thing, does anyone know how they do it?

1) Looks like the d-lineman had a great session this morning. 2) What the lack of offensive standouts?

Typical college students. These kids will do ANYTHING to not have to do laundry!

So does spring practice start next week?

Next Wednesday! Or whenever the 27th is.

Are in my intro to chemistry class and I would say that based on the things they were saying, they were quite grumpy.

It sounded like the coaches were pushing them even harder just because it was 6:00 a.m. I heard Moorehead's name mentioned a few times and how he kept saying to go faster or work harder.

Man, I'm loving these new coaches more and more.

#38-0

HMMMM... Players grumbling about being pushed harder in a 6AM workout. I bet they are just complaining about the 6am workout period!

I assume these guys are probably freshmen who just haven't actually had someone push them because they were always bigger and better than their high school teammates. Now they have to work to achieve success. Just remember that those guys will be the same ones leading the charge in 2 or 3 years.

I look at it this way:

Morehead is from Jim Harbaugh coaching tree. So he's helping the coaches weed out the entitlement mentality that seem to have plagued the program for some time. (ahem, Marcus Davis, ahem)

If those players are grumbling about working hard, wait until scrimmages starts, because those players will get the coaches riding on them. Hello, Bud Foster and Torrian Gray!

That is something that was missing from the program last year...coaches who are not afraid of kicking butts just to light fire under their collective asses.

When I played varsity soccer in the 8th grade, my coach was a pompous asshole, and I almost quit the team in the final week cuz it didn't matter what I did, he would find something wrong, and blow it up. That fall I played, we won our 7th straight regional championship and was awarded the national championship. I wished I had kept playing for that coach but alas, my parents said no more soccer because they didn't like driving 45 minutes each days to pick me up from practices. I coached a youth soccer team one spring, applying everything I learned from that asshole, and the parents of the girls I coached were disappointed I didn't return for fall soccer.

My point I am trying to make is, it is about time we have coaches who are butt kicking and demanding for players to "reach for excellence," if you will pardon the cliche.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

The coaches I respected and loved the most were the ones who criticized myself and others the most. Coaches obviously have to go about it the correct way, and also encourage them when the team/players do it right, but some of the people in the moment you may not like end up being some of the ones you respect the most in the end.

@vtscottyb

+1 to you for that outstanding response.

Isn't that why Bud Foster is one of the most respected coaches by players and peers alike? Sure, he acts like a manic on the sideline, but if he didn't take his job that seriously, would he be that way?

Let's contrast that to Newsome. How often did the camera pan the sideline, and lurking in Beamer's background is Newsome, standing there with a wooden look on his face? Newsome looks like he is as excited to be there as going to a funeral. I very seldom saw him getting worked up over a missed block or something. Take a look at Shane Beamer, he may not had been an outstanding running back coach, but man, he gets PUMPED and players feed off that.

I can't wait to see Grimes and Morehead in action, roaming the sideline, but from what I hear, Grimes isn't one to get all jacked up, but I'm sure he is good at getting his message across.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Why is Alabama starting springball a week earlier then Tech? Is it a conference thing or mandatory starting dates...I don't like them getting a head start

Sean

Every team starts at a different time. They aren't getting a head start because they are still only allowed a certain number of practices. Whether you start those practices in February or in April, you have a limit. I would imagine the way we decided to do ours is that the week after Spring Break is 6AM workouts and then the following week starts spring practice. Each school can do whatever they want as long as they are within NCAA regulations for practice time.

Going off of that, Bama can start a week earlier because the weather isn't as much of a factor for them. Southern/CA schools will generally start earlier for that reason. Also, it sometimes is just personal preference of the coach. Some coaches want as short of a break as possible between the bowl game and spring ball. Others want a shorter break between spring and summer. But as Hokie_x3_Hi mentioned, each team gets a set number of practices, so there's no real advantage to starting earlier.

Their spring break is the last week of March so they will not be practicing that week.

Anyone else curious why Logan Thomas isn't showing up at all on here? I don't necessarily understand the metrics on how they judge this but still.

Ever since his announcement to stay his last season he has ultimately been under the radar. I don't know if it is purposeful or not

Don't get me wrong, I would much rather see his name on the 6 AM list, but has anyone else noticed he never refers to football on twitter like guys like Antone and others do? Or that there was no sign of him in the Harlem shake? (That I saw)

That might be a good thing though, it probably means he is trying to take things really seriously.

On another matter, I am really pleased with some of the names popping up on that list.

No surprise that Jarrett is 3/3. You could tell last year that the kid is a natural lead by example kind of Hokie. Can't wait to see him play with a year under his belt.

For sure, and he's definitely the kind of kid who's easy to root for just with his family stuff and all. I doubt we'll see any rumblings about needing senior leadership in a couple years.

Logan strained his back the other day lifting. He is fine but I believe the trainers told him to take it easy as a precaution for the next 1-2 weeks.

Where did you hear that from? I hope that won't affect his ability in Spring practice. At least it isn't serious.

Tariq is 3/4! I love Tariq and really hopes he comes back full force. He adds so much to our defense.

Love seeing the DBs setting the tone. I'm sure Exum would be up there if he could.

No pun intended on that "setting the tone" bit right? Riiiiiiight? I'm actually a little surprised Exum didn't get any shirts, bum knee and all (only half-kidding).

Anyone else REALLY excited to see J.C. Coleman working hard? I've always thought that if he put on a little extra muscle that he could look a lot like David Wilson (yeah, I'll give you that there's a bit of optimism there...)

Also, where's Edmunds on these...?

Aiming kind of low, aren't we? At some point, we need to start pushing around real teams.

A decent amount of DBs but no Donaldven Manning. With him having added on weight and refocusing himself, I was hoping he would be on here, but alas, he is not.
Still plenty of time for all these guys to get where they want to be before fall though.

According to his Instragram, he current weighs around 174 lbs. He will be one to watch for in the spring.

Still not that big! But at least it is higher than his paper-weightish number from last season.

Why are so many shirts being given out now? Its cool if it is only 2 guys like it was on day 1 or slightly more on day 2, but it is getting kind of ridiculous. It should be an honor and something to push guys, but if everyone is getting them it seems to water it down. If everyone has a shirt, then no one has a shirt... you know what i'm saying?

But I am really excited to see Tariq on the lists multiple days. I would love to see him healthy. Him, Jack Tyler and RVD will all be experienced and should have a solid crew. Noticeably more players on D getting the shirts. Hope the offense is going to be ready to roll come spring ball. I have a feeling our athleticism at tight end in combination with Loeffler's offense will be special!

I obviously don't know if this is true, but might be that on the first day there were only 3 guys who really busted ass, and maybe as the week dragged on more guys caught on. If that's the case, then I am only disappointed that there weren't as many on the first couple days.
