Maryland Fans Take Keys Out on 3rd Downs Too

I was at the Klempsun/Maryland game this year, and could not help but notice that the Maryland fans take their keys out on 3rd downs when on defense. I entered into an argument with my basis being that they can only steal traditions from other schools. Typical Maryland. So I ask, please raise your keys tomorrow on every 3rd down, and YELL YOUR FREAKIN LUNGS OUT to let them know how Key Play is done.

Funny, I don't see a "key play" website for Maryland anywhere... typical. typical.

YELL OUT LOUD

WVU Fans shake their keys on Kickoffs.... really weird.

Beat WVU

Cause thats really the only time they play defense

@CaptKirkVT10

That's what I grew up with, my parents went to a small school in South Carolina called Furman. "Keyplays" were kickoffs there as well.

yeah during the 08 game i asked a terp if they were making fun of us or if they actually do it, he told me they did it too. i do remember at college park in 09 they were getting loud when maryland had the ball on 3rd and 4th down. i was encouraging the behavior, it was hilarious.

I approve of the picture used here because, 1: Braveheart is a quality movie and 2: my roommate and I have made kilts and will be painted up for this game.

But where will you store your car keys?

He can hang them from....well never mind....

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

I can neither confirm nor deny...

If you've got some skills you can still shake them. ;)

@AMB4VT

Let's not kid ourselves here, we're not the only team that shakes our keys.

That said, we do have a good track record of taking common things and making them ours:
- Enter Sandman
- Key Plays
- Hokie Pokie (well...uh...yeah)

loud noises

Ok so, I'm listening to Enter Sandman while perusing TheKeyPlay.
The guy in the background is headbangin' almost in perfect time to the version I'm listening.

It's an omen. We'll win! Go Hokies!

This is going to be great for the ACC.

congrats on 3K.

Also, this gif is mesmerizing

wat?

All I can think of is elementary school, where our teachers used to use hand bells or whistles to call in their classes. *Ding ding ding* Stop having fun!

"Exit light..."

Seems legit.

Hey, it's like a golf clap I guess. You want to cheer and look excited, give yourself something else to do that makes less noise...shoog?

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Sorry. Best I could do:

I posted this on some other thread a month or so ago, but VT tradition says the same thing. 3rd down OFFENSIVE plays. I'm as shocked as you are now

http://www.unirel.vt.edu/history/students_alumni/traditions.html

In the early to mid-1980s, probably 1984, Hokie football fans began removing keys from their pockets and shaking them at the beginning of a third-down offensive play, indicating a key play. The tradition did not originate at Virginia Tech but has become a significant tradition at football games.

I have never done this, nor have I ever seen someone do it. I probably would have them with sticks.

I saw UMD fans with their keys out during the VT-UMD game in 2004...but thats because it was 41-3 at the half and they were getting ready to head back up 81! heeey-o

The Dude Abides

Comments like that'll get ya a bunch of turkey legs quick.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Oh yeah! That was the game Corso accused us of running up the score because we kicked a field goal before halftime.

I was also at the Maryland/Clempson game. I was up in one of their suites with a guy from work. I was walking around in a away LT jersey if ya saw me. Their crowd noise is pretty pathetic. I think they were taking out their keys to leave :P

@VTimHokie85

Yep, I saw you from a distance - told my gf, who is also a Hokie, about seeing your LT3 jersey. Tried to get closer to yell a "Let's Go" but was not able to.

Nice attire, sir!

You don't need to get closer, you need to yell louder.

Often Imitated, Never Duplicated.

I'm assuming you were able to see all 17 Terp fans in the stands at the same time. With all of them shaking keys at the same time, I'm sure it was quite a racket.
