I love lists. Top Ten, bottom ten, whatever. Here's a list of ways that I came up with to pass the time during the BYE week. (Note to paper airplane throwers, etc. This is not the week that the Hokies play Brigham Young East. There will be no first half for you to show up at this weekend. Enjoy.)
1. Rake a bunch of leaves into a pile shaped like Tom Savage. Pretend you're Dadi Nicholas. Rinse. Repeat.
2. Buy an extra pumpkin and carve a Bud Foster Face in it. (Only if you want trick-or-treaters to be scared of walking up to your porch.)
3. Pick up some Duke gear and drive to Charlottesville on Saturday. Tickets and fun will be plentiful.
4. Host a baby shower for the next cheerleader to be impregnated just because Sam Rogers showed up.
5. Really, do something with your wife that SHE wants to do. Willie Byrn will cut across the middle in traffic for LT, you can do the same for your marriage every now and then.
6. Organize a counseling center for Troubled Quarterbacks That Face the Hokies this Year.
7. Organize a First Down Collection Drive in your local community for the Hokie offense. They need all they can get.
8. Carefully drink alcohol all day on Saturday and monitor your state of functionality. A good, practical game day buzz can always use tweaking in a safe laboratory setting.
9. Write a BCS standings calculator that takes pre-game entrance and number of coaches with sweet goatees into account.
10. Bake a pie to score French points.
Let's hear 'em dudes. What are you guys doing this weekend?

I'll be in NOVA helping my GF get settled in her new place...
then I'll be looking for jobs in NOVA
Hey same here! Except minus the GF. What kind of job you looking for?
well my degree is in Mechanical Engineering. I have 3 years of experience doing Design Engineering for a manufacturing plant. I'm still pretty young and open to about anything though. At this point I'm just trying to get up there and then go from there. I don't think I'll find my 'career' job right off the bat. My current boss has told me that most engineers work 3-5 years in their first 2 or 3 jobs before finding 'the one' so that's kind of what my expectation is at this point
Yeah I'm the same way. Just trying to get something that can keep my in DC area. So we got a food scientist down below, a mechanical engineer, and a video/creative guy.. anyone looking to hire? haha
Holla at me if you hear of anything Michael! I'm tryin to find a production job up in NOVA too
Will do man. I'm thinking a creative gig though at an ad agency, hopefully along the lines of production.
Me, three! Anyone need to hire a food scientist?
From the looks of it, looks like we should start a "TKP Hokies for Hire" tab!
Under "Other Skills: Member of TKP", resume will always be moved to the top of the pile.
Taking my baby Niece to the pumpkin patch! I can't wait! :)
I'm a chef, so I'll be sweating the day away in the kitchen. Normally I have my computer, iPad & phone strategically placed around the kitchen so I don't miss anything no matter where I am, I can probably get by with just the iPad this week.
Lost it at #9. Well done.
Tough Mudder on Saturday. I was so happy when I checked the schedule and realized that we don't have a home game this weekend. I'm gonna embarrass myself completely, but it'll still be fun.
#5. If I had a wife, that would have convinced me without question.
I was about to say #5 is golden advice.
I have no filly either, just sayin'
#1 sounds like my kind of a weekend. But for #5, it helps when you marry a fellow Hokie. We spend our Saturdays watching Tech together. I spend Sundays gloating about our respective NFL teams. This weekend, he has to complete a community service project as part of his Army career course. I get to be rent-a-crowd with him.
I plan on watching Duke beat UVa. Also will be watching the big ACC game, with the Richmond Seminoles at Baja in The Fan.
The Fan reference +1
aww man have i got some stories about that place, the neighborhood in general and baja specifically.
For cheap beer, I'll take Tecate over PBR any day
I'll be at a wedding (Family member who isn't a Hokie who luckily for me planned accordingly. Not that that had anything to do whatsoever with the date that was chosen heh.) So I'll be bumming out around there, and when not involved in anything related to that checking in on various CFB games.
i think i'll be tweeting walking dead spoilers at ohherro.
Lucky for me, I can't access twitter in China!
Edit:
#1 - what the hell? Who is upvoting that?
#2 - my gf was catching up on The Walking Dead while I was out of the country and I totally spoiled a major plot point by accident.
People who knew what thread he was referencing. It's funny since it was in jest.
Spending friday and saturday morning with the gf since she is having her wisdom teeth out and then probably working Saturday night. If not, then probably watching the FSU/Clemson game.
You're a good chap for that.
Get ice on that shit like...immediately. Faster the swelling goes down, easier recovery.
I might go to Charlottesville, but I would never buy Duke anything
Giving you +1 for this. Duck Fuke.
Lets meet up and throw a football in the parking lot. Bring money for bail though since thats illegal in charlottesville
You'll be sure to cause outrage throwing a football at a football game
if you're not careful you could be spotted by TimeCop and will probably have an offer letter by Monday
Correction: a former offer letter.
With a bunch of typos*
Going on a shopping trip to Charlotte, NC with my mom and cousins! But making it home before Florida State vs. Clemson!
South Park is a DANGEROUS place!
I want to do #2, I should do #5, I'll probably end up doing #8.
Actually, I'll be writing the report for this project I'm on. I'd much rather be watching our Hokies. :(
Accompanying my wife to a workshop in Richmond. Good thing that it is a bye weekend.
Headed to Clemson/FSU with some coworkers! Thinking up a good sign for gameday.
Who's your Dadi?
a picture of an angry bud foster made into a "soon" meme
With Bud Foster, it'd be more like a "too late" meme.
Or a "Pick yourself up, man. You're on the ground." With a Bud leaning down watching with his hands on his knees like he does.
Studying. All. Effin. Day.
Visiting my parents to drink German style home brew and eat German food! It's an Oktoberfest party and I made one of the beers. A few friends are even coming along. Going to be a fun weekend. And it is not a coincidence that this is happening on a bye week. My parents are Hokies, too.
Buying my tickets for a road trip to miami on november 9th and watching the only 2 teams in the same conference ranked in the top 5 play each other.
I'll be there at the Miami game too!
Heading to Oxford to watch Ole Miss-LSU! Going to visit a friend that goes there
Friday: work on laundry and change oil in car, then head to HHS vs NHS football game to film, grumble at refs to the coaches and stat guy who sit up top with me, and eat free food in press box
Saturday: A little bit of #5 at Meadowview Applebutter festival, then head home to finish getting ready for in-laws arrival from Delaware.
#5: Circus either Friday evening or Saturday morning with my wife and girls. Hopefully get to watch Clemson-Florida State Saturday evening.
Ideally, I'd like to be at the top of Pilot Mountain come Saturday afternoon.
Subbing in for Barney with 'the fun girls?'
Will you get Skippy or Daphne?
Upvote for the Andy Griffith reference!
I have the in-laws coming to town so that I can do a bunch of yard work and potentially install a back splash in the kitchen. Also will start figuring out my Christmas lights for the year since we just bought the house in July.
For you all moving to the DC area, I don't have any engineering/food science/creative connections, but, if you are interesting in financial services, let me know!
Do you hire engineers? I'm actually looking to get my MBA at some point after college if a company will pay for it.
Depends on the role...for advisors, sure, it's more about personality than educational background. They won't pay for an MBA, education that they will pay for is more your industry designations like CFP, CLU, etc.
#5, taking the wife to the state fair this weekend. should be fun.
All-day Volleyball tournament...football schedule was convenient and I probably won't be able to walk on Sunday.
If I can walk/stand, I'll be tiling my new shower...
Busch Gardens Fearfest, y'all
funny- me too. Maybe I'll see you there!
Wondering if French or/and Mason can do analysis on the FSU/Clemson Game this weekend. Since it's a BYE week and in all likelyhood the Coastal Division Champ will be facing one these teams for the ACCCG. Right now the Hokie football team is in control of its own destany. We have Duke, BC (played great against Clemson), Miami (toughest opponent), MD (lets not get surprized in this one), LOLUVA (for the Decade of Dominance). It could be us. Realistically, it could not be us.
Thought this would be the appropriate place to make this request.
My lady friend is visiting NOVA for our 4-year anniversairy. I will be taking her out to dinner in Georgetown on Friday night. As for Saturday, I don't know what we have planned, but maybe I can convince her to go to a bar to watch FSU-Clemson.
nice! where ya going in georgetown?
La Chaumiere
I tried to make a reservation at Filomena but they were full for the weekend.
I think we're going to Eastern Market on Saturday morning. That's quickly become my girlfriend's favorite place in DC. It's a great place to get some breakfast and just enjoy a nice Saturday morning outside.
Sat= #5 as much as possible
Sun = Golfing the King and Bear at the World Golf Hall of Fame, Florida
Golf, (sobbing out loud) I miss it SOOOOO much.
Will happily host any TKP Hokie at my course in Hawaii, Prince Course at Princeville Golf Club!
Team stayed at that hotel for the Louisville stomp game played em both.
#8 on Thursday when I go watch UNC/Miami to fill the void left by Hokie football this week. Then of course watching FSU/Klempson
I will be moving into a new apartment in Hershey, PA - then taking all of the friends out to Troeg's for a "successful moving day brew" before watching the FSU/Klempson game at 8p. Verizon is hooking up the TV on Friday so that I do not miss any games. Also will have #Footballonmyphone to watch DOOK v. UVA
I will be bottling our first home brew (called Moose Slobber FYI) and drinking more beer. Then watching FSU v Clemson so I can troll my manager about it (he's an FSU fan). I
don'trecommend drunk trolling your managerDid you get a kit that's a clone of Moose Drool? It's a Big Sky Brewing Brown Ale from Montana. I think one of my friends made this kit before too. All-grain, partial mash, or extract?
yes, I believe its a clone of Moose Drool. Extract as its the first one we've ever done. Second beer we brewed is an extract kit w/ specialty grains for an oaked imperial stout. We are subbing out the oak chips for our own that have been soaked in Makers Mark.
I think once we get a few more extract brews under our belts we're gonna try a partial mash or an all-grain.
Nice! And definitely an awesome call with the Maker's Mark soaked oak chips. Good luck on your brewing endeavors.
If you ever have any questions on the process or particular methods with partial mash or all-grain, shoot me an e-mail: ashore13@vt.edu.
I'd recommend getting BeerSmith once you start doing your own recipes ($30 computer program that does an amazing number of calcs and set up for you).
Do you guys teach a class for new brewers? I am interested in learning but have no idea where to begin.
I'm definitely willing to help anyone learn who wants. I learned from my father who's been doing it for 20+ years. I've taught friends just by having them brew with me. After seeing someone brew a few times and getting the process explained, it's really not too hard.
There are different methods, but the same basic idea:
Get sugar from grains or extract in warm water. Boil the malty water with hops for bitterness/flavor and sanitation. Ferment with yeast. Bottle and enjoy.
We are learning as we go, but more than happy to help as well.
Thanks guys!
Anybody in the Roanoke area can drop me a line.
I can hook you up with the local brewing club and/or a demo.
Any questions, you can drop me a line too.
Yup... I will see all you other Hokie fellas with either a girlfriend, wife or child at the pumpkin patch on Saturday. Happy picking
A little geocaching and taking the dogs down to the park to run around.
OSU vs IOWA
My Hawkeye spouse would be jealous.
Will be at the game aswell!
Doing some much needed yard work, and hopefully the last time until spring. Then, going to a neighborhood kids birthday party with my wife and kids because that would be creepy if I didn't take them. Then we're going over to another couples house to watch F$U and Clemson.
Watching football, video editing, remoting into my office desktop to do some work.
Sucks some of you hokies above are looking for jobs. Keep up the fight! If anyone lands a job in NOVA and needs a place to stay (even temporary) I have an extra room at my townhouse that needs to be rented out!
1) Watching Georgia-Vanderbilt on TV.
2) Working on my dissertation.
3) Writing either a lesson or a test (likely both).
4) Sending out job letters.
5) Potty-training my daughter.
6) Changing my son.
7) Sitting down with my wife at some point and wondering what we were thinking with having two small children. (kidding... they're absolutely great)
#5...good luck. After doing this with my daughter, I know why the French surrender so much. Roll up the rugs and keep her off the carpet...my thoughts will be with you.
We've been at it for a while. She knows how to use the toilet perfectly (including wiping and flushing), but telling someone when she has to go is the major hurdle we face.
Yea that was the part that took the longest. My daughter was stubborn as all hell and just wouldn't use it even though she knew how. Nothing teaches you patience more than mopping up pee while having a 2 year old cheer you on and tell you that "peepee goes in the potty". Thank God we are on the other side now for her. Unfortunately my 15 month old son is on the horizon...sigh.
Wait, at 31 should have learned this already?!?!
I usually just go out to the pasture...
Best tip I could give about #5 is let them run around without anything on. An old school nurse told us that when we were training my son and sure as shit it worked. He wouldn't pee on the floor and he told us he had to go. After that when he would have his spiderman undies on or a pull-up he would revert to going "uh-oh" in his pants so we just bribed him with 1 hershey kiss if he told us he had to go. Still haven't got going #2 in the potty down yet though. I guess he'll figure it out soon.
Much like Loeffler, I think you need a multiple approach. Tried that with my daughter and she was more than happy to piss all over the floor. The thing that worked for us was using the shower as the clean up after accidents. She hated the shower so it got the message across.
Oh, I like that. Upvote for involving Loeffler.
Wife made mimosas to keep the noon tailgate habit going.
I'm a grad student so most of my days consist of studying..and yes that includes Saturday, I'm a nerd I know. VT football has provided the lengthiest excuse to not study so far this semester, leaving me in a bit of pickle this week. I had to watch LOLUVA suck it up just so I didn't read myself into a coma. I must say I was not disappointed .
