BCS Hokie team?

If FSU keeps rolling and we hold them tight but lose in the ACCCG....and Oregon loses, giving FSU a road to Pasadena... Do we get in by only being beat by the #1 and #2 teams in the nation?

The Clemson is not over... Clemson can come back. And We still have to beat Duke, BC, Miami, and UVA before we can worry about thinking about the ACCCG. Those are all winnable games but we need to play well

Clemson didn't come back

-- from the locker room?

Not sure they ever got off the bus to run down the hill.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Don't forget Merland! Although it looks like Twerps may be stuck on their backs at the moment.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

Yeah but Stephon Diggs has a broken leg. So does one of their other receivers. Injury bug biting Maryland again this year.

Not scrrrd of Maryland. Kicfkoff for that game might be 3:30 or later, which might make Lane Stadium feel like 8pm

Yeah, I get that. Hard not to look ahead. Sorry!

I'm all for being optimistic but man, let's just take it one game at a time.

Oh i forgot about Maryland. But they just lost badly to Wake and lost their two best WR's. So i think we'll be ok with that one

Our motto bringing spirit true, that we may ever serve you

I made a bet with my brother that UMD wouldn't score 24 points on us a couple weeks ago. Winner gets a Rail from the other one. He took the bet, I think I'm gonna win.

Rip his freaking head off!

No way we get in having 2 losses when another team only has 1 loss.

We're not letting any of these other guys beat us.
They are not better than we are and as fans, it's our job the make sure we keep their feet to the fire.

You keep talking that 2-loss crap and I'll tell Sam about your negativism.
You don't want to make Sam angry.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Just for curiosity what is the order for bowl BCS bowl picking this year?

Orange, Sugar, Fiesta.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

At this rate, we may end up in the BCS by default. But really, we should be focusing on Duke right now. They and BC are no longer doormats.

I just place this here:

I can think of nothing better, than for all those pretty Hokie equestrian ladies to wipe off their soles on that kind of doormat. Those have to be some real dirty soles, or I really have no clue about hanging around horses.

BCS doesn't mean NCG. We could get an at large to the Sugar bowl potentially.

Clemson isn't haha

Touchdown Tech - Bill Roth

Maybe I don't remember the current BCS rules properly, but in your scenario (we lose to eventual National Championship Game participant FSU in the ACCCG), I believe we automatically go to the Orange as the ACC representative. There is no 'at-large' about it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. And also, yes, to the sentiment of all of the other comments in this thread... Let's just beat Duke for now.

"The TKP community is unrivaled."
-Justin Fuente, probably

Not necessarily. It's still an "at-large" bid, but it must come from the ACC. That's part of the whole bowl tie-in. The Orange Bowl MUST have an ACC team in it. So it could be Clemson, it could be Miami, or it could be us. It would depend on who is looking better and ranked higher. In a scenario where Clemson wins out and we win out but lose the ACC Championship to Florida State, Clemson would likely be the bid for the Orange Bowl. Oddly enough, this year has the potential to be the year the ACC gets the short end of the "2 BCS bowl bids max per conference" rule that the SEC has seen affect them in past years.

I believe the rule is that the at-large team must be within 1 loss of the division winner to be considered. Provisions like this allow for the Orange Bowl to pick a team like VT or Miami instead of getting stuck with a turd like GT in case the ACCCG winner goes to the National Title and a team other than VT wins the Coastal.

The Dude Abides

I don't think this is true. The at large bid does not necessarily need to come from the ACC, nor does the loser of the ACCCG get an automatic bid. The winner of the ACCCG automatically gets the Orange Bowl unless they are selected for the MNC. If so, the Orange Bowl gets a preemptive selection prior to the selection order of the BCS bowls for at large bids:

Rose gets Big Ten and PAC12 Championship game winners
Orange gets ACC Championship game winner
Sugar gets SEC Championship game winner
Fiesta gets Big12 champion

Two teams are selected using the BCS poll/formulas for the MNC. The two bowls that lose their tied-in participant get to choose "replacement" selections first. Usually, the bowls go for a conference tie-in, but not always. This cuts both ways. Illinois was chosen as a replacement for OSU one year in the Rose Bowl, a move decried by many because Illinois wasn't very good (but still managed to find their way into the top 14 of the BCS standings, a requirement for an at-large team, except Notre Dame and mid-majors have slightly different selection requirements as far as ranking is concerned). Illinois got pummeled by USC. The Rose will always try to get a team from their chosen conferences, but TCU was forcibly selected to play Wisconsin when Oregon played Auburn a few years back in the MNC due to a contract clause tripped that year.

If no second team from a conference qualifies for an at-large spot after the first conference team is chosen for the MNC, the bowl has free reign to offer any qualifying team the spot. If a mid-major achieves, I think, the top 12 or 16, they, I believe, are guaranteed an automatic berth somewhere. They are usually the last team taken in the at-large selection order, giving the shaft to some poor bowl. The AAC winner this year will be automatically given a spot, even though they will only be taken as an at-large.

I took this off of the BCS Website. But here's the rule:

If a bowl loses a host team to the NCG, then such bowl shall select a replacement team from among the automatic-qualifying teams and the at-large teams before any other selections are made. If two bowls lose host teams to the NCG, each bowl will get a replacement pick before any other selections are made. In such case, the bowl losing the No. 1 team gets the first replacement pick, and the bowl losing the No. 2 team gets the second replacement pick. If the Rose Bowl loses both the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions to the NCG, it will receive two replacement picks.

Basically the Orange Bowl could pick whoever they wanted if FSU ends ranked #1 and would have second pick at whoever they wanted if they finished #2 with the following exceptions:

Thy cannot select the BCS #1 or #2 (obviously) and they also cannot select another "host" BCS team. So that would mean they couldn't pick a conference champion committed to another BCS game.

So for example, if FSU finishes at #2 and Alabama at #1, then the Sugar Bowl would have first choice as to which at large team they would like to replace Alabama with. They could select anyone with the exception of the B1G, Pac12, and Big XII champions because they are hosts to the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl repectively. The Orange Bowl would then have second pick to replace FSU with an at-large team with the same restrictions.

The selection procedure is complicated and strange. It's interesting to look at, and you can have a good laugh at the Notre Dame rule (seriously, how do they have a rule just for them?).

BCS Selection Procedures Link

I guess we've just been in an era where the conferences who have one team in the Championship game often have another that is eligible for a BCS berth and are often picked (see Florida against Louisville last year). It's not often that someone from that conference isn't represented at the bowl though. One exception was the 2012 Sugar Bowl against Michigan but that year, both LSU and Bama were in the title game so no other SEC team could play in a BCS bowl.

Interesting avatar. Reverse psychology?

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

I hope the team is 100% focused on Duke, but as a fan, its hard to not think about winning out, beating FSU and getting one more shot to #BEATBAMA

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

We've really got to stop the assumption that this team is going to be the Coastal Champion. Still got to play Duke, BC, Miami, and Maryland.

Duke had the Hokies down almost 20 pts last year. The Hokies have to play BC at BC at noon. You might as well hook the team up with Demerol IV's right before kick-off. Miami hasn't even fucking lost a game yet. It's soooo Heather Dinich to write off the U because they ALMOST lost last Thursday. What I saw was a team overcoming 4 turnovers, a hurt Johnson, a hostile Thursday night crowd, and a team with NOTHING to lose to get away with a win.

The schedule is definitely not an SEC murderer's row, but I wouldn't call it a lock.

If I'm a Hokie coach...first, I grow my goatee. Then I tell the guys that we need the intensity that got us here the rest of the way, so we can write our own ticket ... because it's going to suck to have to watch other games and root for somebody else to win/lose on our behalf.

Leonard. Duh.

Well you're not a coach and neither are we. We'll continue to look ahead and play that "what if" game because it is fun. If you want to focus on Duke, fine. That's your choice. Please read all the posts that involve Duke and only Duke and provide great comments and good discussion.

This whole "we should be focusing on this week" argument has been made about a million times at this point and it adds nothing to this discussion. If you don't like what we're talking about, you don't need to add to the conversation.

Sorry, I'm not trying to come off harsh here, I can see where this point of view comes from, it's just getting really old really quickly.

Thank you. Made an account just to say that. Why take the fun out of being a fan. I'm not changing anything by playing out as many scenarios as possible, or desiring to see a smaller number next to VT. For those of us who have friends at many different school across the country, it's the only "objective" way to say we're better than you. It's all in fun.

You made an account just for me?

me?

I'm flattered, really! Now, take this turkey leg and go do great things!!!!

No offense taken. There's no crying on the internet. I'm just knocking on wood. Very superstitious. That is all.

Reminds me of the "I'd rather have a big Vick than a small Weinke" shirts. We are going to need a healthy and strong Wang to beat Miami though.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

I'm tired of all the projections, scenarios, what-if threads on this site. As fans, we shouldn't look forward at all or have fun with random scenarios and what-ifs. As fans on threads like these, we should comment, "Cut it out. We have to focus on (insert team we're playing this week)" in order to get as many upvotes as possible. Or for upvotes you can try, "Let's just get past (insert team we're playing this week) because they'll get after ya."

As fans, we should ignore the fact that we have arguably the best defense in the nation, ignore the fact that we've only had one loss this season by the hands of the back to back nat'l champs. We have to ignore the fact we can beat every team on our schedule and we always have to be scared that success will make our players not want to win. Also, we always have to think that teams at the bottom of the acc like duke and bc can beat us. C'mon guys, get with it.

As fans, not players or coaches, the only thing we should focus on is the team we play this week, Duke. Because as fans, not players or coaches, if we start to look ahead then the players and coaches won't do their jobs right and we'll lose and it will be all of our faults for looking ahead, even though we're not players or coaches.

I'm really not sure why you got the downvote there. I had been reading through the responses and thinking the exact same thing. Its our job as fans to think of wild scenarios. Us, as fans, 'looking ahead' past an opponent will never be the reason for a loss. If the coaches and players do it, thats another story. I'm going off the assumption that most of the folks on here aren't suiting up on Saturdays...

+1 from me to make up for a silly downvote

Save a collar, pop a Wahoo

Maybe they could not (or did not want to) see the sarcasm. +1 for both of you.

Yeah I've pissed some key players off over the past year plus so I expect downvotes these days. It's fine.

I thought it was funny that Skipper and I both got fed up with the over-seriousness and commented about it within five minutes of each other.

I'm going off the assumption that most of the folks on here aren't suiting up on Saturdays...

Does a rubber clown-suit with golf-spikes and velcro gloves count?

I'm uhh, asking for a friend.

Great Avatar.

My beers suit up on Saturdays, wonder if that counts due to association?

Thanks... I'm a big fan of Oktoberfest for all the right reasons, and one or two of the wrong ones.

About time to find a new Avatar though. Halloween is nigh upon us.

When the server comes, those 3 reasons are enough.

Why is everyone so stuck on "Focusing on Duke"... We are not the players, as fans, we are able to look ahead.... Of course we want our players to take things week by week and not focus ahead. People on here have gotten hurt on just a conversation about the future. Why cant we think about the future? Why cant I ask who we think is the toughest opponent remaining on the schedule? When I posed the question, people immediately came in as "Focus Police" talking about Duke.

As Fans, we can look ahead, hope, dream, think about potential outcomes... People need to chill with the whole "Be quiet, its Duke week".

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

But what if James Gayle says to his teammates this weekend..."Dudes, we can just cruise the rest of the way. Steve703VT said so. I read his stuff on the internet all the time. He's legit."

Didn't think about that, did you?

Leonard. Duh.

If James Gayle came on here and told us to stop looking ahead I would not post another sentence the rest of the week that did not contain the word Duke in it.

Ohhhh, I see how it is.

You'll listen to James Gayle, but when it comes to your man, Leonard...
