Not sure if anyone saw this. Stave thought he spiked the ball to stop clock, sundevil was laying on the ball, then ref won't let Wisconsin snap and clock expires. No guarantee they were going to win it, as they were on the 20, but was some controversy...

Here's the video for anyone who wants it.
Other than it was a debacle, I'm not sure what the takeaway is. Serious judgement error to try to position the football for field goal attempt with no timeouts and so little time left on the clock.
Thanks for video support. I can't put this on the refs though, researching it, Stave should have downed it better, and I can see why the sun devil jumped on it, he saw it as a fumble. I call bad play by Wisconsin.
Just another reason why I'm a Hokie and not a Sun Devil fan. Pretty weak to sit on the ball after the whistle.
Yea, he probably should have used his team's last time out so Wisconsin could kick the go ahead field goal.
LIKE MIKE LONDON LAST YEAR.
If you think there's a chance that the refs viewed that as a fumble, you dive on it. Terrible job by Wisc
really? i thought it was pretty heads up play by their guy.
Right. I'm not a big fan of it, but... W?
I think the fact that the Wisconsin QB didn't spike the ball down, instead just laid it down had a huge factor in the confusion. Can't say I don't give a flip or like the Big Weak ;)
Why were they trying to center up a 35 yard field goal with no timeouts left anyway? That's on their coach.
It is it is but they do expect the ref to at least set the ball..instead the line judge allowed the defensive player to lay on the ball for 5 seconds. No delay of game...
WOW! I went to bed before this happened and just saw the score this morning. I didn't know it ended like this. Stave really messed that one up. Brutal but so satisfying. I do not like Wisconsin. At all.
Was watching this one live while my wife (ASU alum) was asleep. I woke her up with my WTF reaction. I tried to explain to her in her stupor what happened, but I really couldn't.
ASU had some bad coaching decisions in the closing minutes, but Wisky coach and refs screwed that up. Kudos to ASU for jumping on the ball, what difference would it have made if they got called for a delay penalty or let Wisconsin spike it?
As a Hokie, it did make me sad watching 2 offenses be able to score like that though :(
No fret, I'll take our lunch pail D over a marginal offense anyway. Hopefully our guys get clicking soon though.. ACC play is coming fast
In defense of ASU, Stave's attempt to 'down' the ball was peculiar. I've never seen anyone lay it down like he was serving tea before. It's usually just a kneel down. If I were an ASU defender, I'd have jumped on it too. I thought he fumbled it intentionally. It was after the play when Stave went over to the ref and claimed he conceded the play. Weird, wonderful stuff.
Well, that would of made sense if they jumped on the ball right when it was placed on the ground or a second after. There's a good 3 or 4 seconds after the play is whistled dead before anyone goes after the ball.
Stave was probably just trying to expedite the spot of the ball, but it massively backfired.
He kneels down, but it was right behind the lineman and he was trying to put the ball where the center could snap it quick which the head ref saw, but obviously ASU didn't. It was a dumb smart move on the QBs part, but the ref should have given them the spike or ASU a delay of game penalty.
I don' t see the knee touch down. It looks like he intended to do that, but when he starts to put the ball down he hits the back of one of his lineman. Looks like it should have been Arizona's ball when they fall on it ......it had the makings of the fumblerooski play from years ago!
His knee does touch and at any rate, he's still down the second he starts dropping his knee. If he "fakes" a kneel, it's 15 yards (pretty sure that's still a thing, someone correct me if I'm wrong). You can clearly hear the whistles before the ASU guy jumps on the ball. I could definitely see some justification for a delay penalty on the defense. Oh, Pac-12 refs....
Yup, exactly...throw everything off but the ref allowed the defense to cover the ball for 5s with no delay of the game. Again, laying the ball down was odd...I was like wtf happened watching live.
I went to bed before this happened but it just reinforces how awful Pac-12 refs are. I can't believe after almost two years that conference still isn't making them read the rule book.
That's what they get for chickening out of a Virginia Tech matchup.
Just like Kansas State, amirite?
Wait, referee blunder? Pac 12 refs and the Big 10 involved? OH GOD, I THINK THAT'S DANNY COALE'S MUSIC!
