Weekly Weather Report the biggun in Atlanta

Its that time of the...wait no its not. It's way too early in the week to be doing this stuff, but I write to you to prepare you for what I consider the most important game of the ACC season! I'm gonna give you one hell of a weather report for this week. Despite my 8 AM this morning, I'm not tired. Hell, I'm jacked this! Thursday kicks off ACC play for us and well...its Georgia "chop-block-o'clock" Tech: I'm not particularly crazy about these guys.

That ugly brick wall reminds me of Charlottesville (which I've got quite the story to tell about but I'll save that for Thanksgiving weekend) and those fans... They look so uninterested! And then you've got Paul Johnson's smug face with his 300 lb guys chop blocking the crap out of our linemens' knees...

ANYWHO I digress. Now to tell you what you've really come here for, the weather report in the next few days!

We'll start with the bad news, so that way the good news seems sweeter. There's a multiple front system moving from the Mississippi that's building up rather violently. There's what looks like two major cold fronts that are just East and West of the Mississippi respectively. As I explained to you guys last, week cold air fronts produce bad weather by forcing moisture upwards.

Meanwhile, because Georgia is really close to both the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic, it's really humid down there. When i say really humid I mean REALLY humid, like prone to this stuff. So with all of the moisture left over in the ground from heating (due to the high pressure system that's currently chilling on top of us), and these fronts rolling through from Mississippi, picking all of this stuff up, there's gonna be some serious rain.

This storm system has been heading for the Southeastern states, so it should stay South of us. So does that mean the Wahoo's escape with dry wigs this week?

Ha, no. I predict rain every day for the rest of forever on that terrible, terrible place, because I believe there is a just God, and they deserve it.

Anyway, I've been monitoring the storm through NOAA.com and have been monitoring some fancy schmancy readings, and all signs are pointing to a big storm hitting early in the week. The CAPE (Connective Available Potential Energy) levels are looking much greater in the Mississippi and Alabama areas where the storm currently is or is about to hit. What this basically means is there are large topped clouds, which if you're wondering, means tons of moisture buildup.

Clouds get bigger by having more warm moisture rising and cold surroundings (warm air rises). This means there is a rather large potential energy build up, and a good bit of energy stored up inside of this storm system. You can read CAPE by measuring the area between the red and blue lines, the larger the area the more potential build up there is:

Now, it's not off the scale or massive or anything, but it's certainly big enough, with a high enough cloud top, that we're going to get some thunder and lightning. You can also tell where the peak of the cloud tops are by observing where the red and blue lines collide (as you can see they're kinda high), so this indicates more potential energy buildup.

Now whats the good news, you may be asking? Well all of that information is kinda irrelevant (well sort of), because the storm is hitting Tuesday and Wed, meaning all of this moisture will be dropping off inside the region. This is significant because these cold fronts are followed by a high pressure system, and since we're to the east of it, temperatures will be rising. Expect there to be a lot of moisture in the air, and expect it to be pretty muggy. HOWEVER I almost completely forgot...because it's a night game (not used to saying that) and because it's going to be a clearer sky, the temperatures should drop to a much more comfortable level (although I still expect humidity levels to still be VERY high).

How this all plays out on the field:

I think all of this will play into GT's hands, as like it or not, their offense is better than ours until proven otherwise. The high temperatures and humidity will cause players to get tired out much quicker, and I cannot express enough how important it is for our D to come out rolling and our offense to get some consistent drives rolling. GT's offense gets harder and harder to defend as the game progresses if you can't keep it close.
I do think Bud knows what he's doing, so its not all doom and gloom - I just believe the weather definitely plays into the hands of GT more-so than us, as whoever can consistently drive has a significant advantage in this game (and until proven otherwise, I think we have to give GT the edge there over our offense).

I'm still not completely sold on GT's D this year - their switch to a 4-3 is showing some good results thus far, but they haven't played anyone of note aside from a UNC team whom I'm also not completely sold on. That being said, I do feel like they are a good team and this will be a very good test for VT. I really hope Loeffler surprises me and pulls out all of the stops.

Final predictions

High 75 (feel close to 85)
Low 55 (very cold night)
no breeze whatsoever (like at all)

VT - 20
GT - 17

Im seeing shades of 2007 all over the place

GO HOKIES!!!!!!
