Regarding Lil' Beams comments on Williams.

I understand what he is saying. Everyone freshman needs to know they need to finish plays that they are not involved in (yeah, looking at you Marcus Davis) and hit the blocks in pass protection, but I've always been the best man gets the job kind of guy. If Juice is clearly producing better with the 2's and 3's, than everyone else is with the 1's. Then he should be playing with the 1's.

It's that simple IMO

We can all tell that the coaching staff is pleased with the way Marshawn's running the ball - who wouldn't be?

But, JC and Caleb have learned those other parts of the RB job already and, even though they may not run the ball as well as Marshawn, that puts them a leg up on Marshawn at this point in time. Simply put, if an audible is called to a pass play, an RB can get his QB killed if he doesn't know who to pick up in pass-pro.

Additionally, Trey will be returning at some point in time, and he will add even more competition.

yeah I get this. you have to know pass protection and finish plays. Counter argument though: If it's game time and we need that first down that's only short yardage away who do you feel most comfortable to put in right now?

Honestly, I'm going with Williams and that's not meant as a knock to any other RB. Simply that Williams is showing that he can get those yards, and so to be ready for that game time situation I would like to see him play with the 1's to get that better level of experience.

IMO it's a motivational tactic. Shane knows he will be higher, but if you say "Hey freshman rb, you're our #1 rb." What motivation does he have to hurry up and learn the plays? You keep him as 3rd string and when he knows his stuff like he should you bump him up. With that said, I do agree that you want him playing with the 1's. Which is why if Juice continues to work his butt off and has a good knowledge of the plays, I think you will see him move up the depth chart before the spring game.

Edit: Just saw that 3rd and 31 posted something similar below. I should have read all of the posts.

Finishing plays that they aren't involved in may also mean things like running hard on play-action fakes, etc. Not just blocking, but also selling the defense on a run that's actually a pass, etc., that is a huge part of the offense executing properly.

Just something to keep in mind.

yeah, don't misunderstand me. I was huge on Davis sitting the bench for the shit he pulled. Players that don't execute the plays no matter what their assignment is a big issue for me. It sounds to me that Shane is keeping him there to show him he needs to execute every facet of the job, in this case executing plays he is not involved with, and not that he shouldn't be playing with the 1's.

Also I take it as a good sign that this should be the case if Searels is also lobbying for Juice to join the ones.

If Juice is clearly producing better with the 2's and 3's, than everyone else is with the 1's. Then he should be playing with the 1's.

Agree completely. In my opinion, Williams is clearly the best running back on the roster right now. Shane could have him listed low on the depth chart for a number of reasons. Maybe he wants Williams to still feel as if he has something to prove, which will cause him to continue to push himself. Maybe Shane already feels like he knows Marshawn is going to contribute in the fall, but isn't sure which of the JC/Joel/Jerome/Mangus group will. Having those other four players get an equal number of reps in practice as well as reps with the number 1 offense will allow Shane to determine which of them will get snaps in the fall.

Most likely, it's a combination of both. Regardless, I can't fathom Williams getting redshirted at this point.

I'm right with ya on that mason, gotta see what ya got in the other guys, the whole staff probably knows juice is gonna be a force come fall and just wants to keep the kid with a chip on his shoulder too. Also just talked to Shai McKenzie on Twitter and he's starting to get a lil work on the field apparently not Mich but a little is good for a kid coming off an acl injury

The title of this thread is about Motley. How do we get so off track? I guess it is because we are looking for a running game.

#Let's Go - Hokies

It's because we actually read the article, and while the title is about quarterbacks, the second half of the piece is about the running backs.

We are the Hokies. We will prevail. We will prevail. We will prevail. We are Virginia Tech.

Wait, wait. your blog doesn't count for class credit??? I thought we read the articles and then post on your chats as class participation. Guess things don't work around here like they do at UNC...who am I kidding I put more effort into reading your blogs than UNC football players do into class.

You mean I wasn't supposed to be printing them all out and making a scrapbook?

Let me put it this way, if your articles were Bourbon, I'd have the bottle finished off in about an hour. I'd be so drunk off of your football knowledge you'd find me passed out on a toilet where I tried to take a crap (this in no way ever happened to me).
