Asheville
April is Beer Month for NC.
I'm working out how to cover cities where we'll be having away games. We'll have 7 this year so I need to get it worked out.
Asheville, NC is a big beer town in a small package. Named Beer City USA several times in succession they lost the title last year to a city in Michigan.
An industry buddy tells me there are 13 breweries or brewpubs in Asheville plus 4 in progress. Asheville claims the highest number of breweries per capita than anywhere else in The U.S., about 8000 persons per brewery.
I will hit on a few here but no in-depth reviews, this will be more like a tour book.
Asheville Brewing Company is a brewpub that is a pizzeria located in what looks like an old car dealership or distributing company of some kind. The building has both a nice indoor seating and a very large covered patio that has outdoor games you might find at a tailgate. Each time I've been here the service has been great. Dog friendly and kid friendly, this is a good stop for casual, they have good pizza and some other food, they are open starting for lunches. They keep about 10 beers on tap, their porter recently won Gold medal at the National Craft Brewers Conference in Denver this month. Growlers to go.
Wicked Weed is a new brewery, I have not been there before. We stopped briefly last night but, I was impressed. They have a tasting room downstairs which is Very casual and a nicely appointed dining room and beer garden upstairs. They open at 3pm and had an imaginative and well executed series of beers that seemed to total about a dozen from sours to blondes. Nice mix, there will be something for most beer drinkers here. Tuesday is cask conditioned day. 5pm they tap a new cask. Prices were very affordable with most beer available in 10 oz and pints. I'm not sure the legality of talking actual prices on a blog so suffice it to say their high end beers were about what a regular beer would cost in Roanoke. Dog friendly in the beer garden and kid friendly, the place was packed on a nice Monday night. A good packed though, we easily found room to stretch out and there are a sprinkling of nicely done standing tables outside. Growlers and bottles of lambics/sours to go. I'll add more about the menu later, we plan on dinner there tonight.
Edit: was there for dinner. They have 21 beers on tap. Good place. Sours were good and on the mild side of sour.
Lunch at LAB Lexington Ave Brewery. Pub in downtown that has a cool garage-like patio. It's railing and we're at the outside rail. Beer is much improved and food is quite good. Service is good food prices a bit high but the attempt to do the very high end food is the reason. Opens for lunch. Growlers to go.
Pisgah Brewing Co. - Pisgah is organic certified. Located 20 minutes outside town off I40, Pisgah is consistently one of the best breweries in the East. 15 beers on tap in a real tasting rm, converted warehouse in a office park. This is a no frills joint. Kid friendly and dog friendly. Good beer, inexpensive, regular food trucks and live music. They also make a soda- root beer. Worth the trip out of town. Outside food welcomed.
Not many brewpubs open for lunch. Midweek they seem to open at 3-4.
Must stop by Thirsty Monk for a pint-O
- bacon
Also planning on hitting Wedge brewing tonight.
This will be a progressive post throughout the week.
Drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.

Ahh..two great choices indeed. I'm actually going to be moving away from Asheville this weekend. It's bitter-sweet. I will miss the great beer. How long are you in town Egbert? I might try to pop out for a drink if I can make the time.
Checking out Friday.
Looks like today we'll be at LAB for lunch then French Broad brewing then Wicked Weed for dinner.
Haven't planned out tomorrow though, I need to find a brewpub open for lunch tomorrow.
Tonight I'm playing my last game of poker with some guys at work. Tomorrow is my last day of work and my co-ops want to take me out for dinner. I'm spending Thursday packing but if you're willing and able I could make time for lunch Thursday.
That would be cool.
pick a time and place and let me know. I'll wear my HOAT shirt so you can pick me out.
Wife was slow getting it going today so we never decided wher we would be for lunch. Waiting to get into Over Easy right now.
Probably Thirsty mOnk and Wedge for dinner.
I don't think I'm going to be able to make dinner :/ I have a friend coming over around 530 to help me load some of the heavier stuff and then I'm going to see a movie with another friend at 715. I hope you have a good time in Asheville though!! It's certainly an interesting town. Enjoy the brews! :D
I've heard great things about the sours at Wicked Weed (from sour beer lovers).
I like sours and plan on running through them tonight.
Nice! I saw that a couple of them are very unique. Like a barrel aged sour IPA or something. My parents just went on a trip to Asheville to tour the breweries and the nearby hop farm. I didn't get a chance to try anything they brought because my parents can't drink like they used to.
Did a brew tour last year up in Asheville. OUr bus went to Highland, Pisgah, and French Broad. All were awesome.
Pisgah is the "nanobrewery" type, very into their craft, highly artisinal brews, and refuse to "sell out" (they still aren't widely distributed in NC because they refuse to give up certian standard terms to distributors.) The tour there was from one of the top guys. He knew his beer and was really into the whole thing, despite being admittedly hungover from trying a new batch the night before. They had a Tripel there that was awesom (and not spiced for you "Belgians have too much spice" folks.) The Pisgah Pale Ale is their go to beer and a very balanced and drinkable beer. Their tasting room is very initimate and has a good set-up for local live music. F
Highland was on the other end of the craft brew spectrum. They are much larger in every sense of the word and aspire to keep growing. They probably would aspire to be a Sierra Nevada of the East is my guess. Nothing wrong with that, because like Sierra Nevada they have great standard beers that are well crafted and highly consistent. And they also have a compliment of seasonal/single issue beers that are incredible. Their Cold Mountain winter seaosonal is one of the best beers I've ever had. Their flagship Highland Gaelic is a solid beer if you're ever in NC and wondering what to get. It's on tap or in a bottle almost everywhere. Their facility in Asheville is huge and a great place to party. It's big enough to host weddings at.
And French Broad is kind of a mix between the two. Smaller that Highland but bigger than Pisgah. A little more widely distributed in NC. Really diverse mix of beers and all good. Incredibly nice people working there, couldn't have been more accomodating. They have a great setup inside where the tasting area just flows over to where all the tanks are and you can just kind of hang out amongst them. Very good vibe there. And they had big ass hard pretzels which was great because I was hammered by the time we got there.
egbert - are you hitting up the breweries in Asheville to see the different styles for new beer that you'd like to brew?
Are you going to Oskar Blues?
