Nice gesture by the turtles, should be something that is offered nation wide. These kids kill themselves on the field for our entertainment and less that 5% make it to the pro's so that college degree with no debt is definitely worth something to them in the long run.

As much as I rail on them for some of the silly decisions, this is a true positive. They refused to fire Fridge because they wouldn't pay for the buyout. They cut sports because of budget (despite building a brand spanking new basketball arena, then renovated Cole!) They rolled out of the ACC for the B1G because of money. It's refreshing to see them do this for all the athletes showing up on campus there. At least the volleyball player will be able to get a degree while the football team is getting pummeled.

Guaranteed scholarship, meaning guaranteed degree without debt
Yet, it still won't be enough and the kids will still demand to get paid.
They haven't exactly 'demanded' it yet. More like request. Not like they're on strike.
Nice gesture but can UMD afford it ? At some point they wanted to shut down some of their athletic departments.
Yeah, didn't they just pay a $hitload of $$$ to get out of the ACC?
Technically no, they didn't pay the ACC anything. The ACC just withheld the last two years of payments to Maryland.
I read "The Maryland Way...." and stopped reading
So is Maryland basically saying it's going to take their student athletes the next 40 to 60 years to complete a degree in basic crab-basket repair?
Good question. Let's ask our ACC resident expert. What do you think, Scrong?

I'm picturing a Van Wilder-type former athlete that keeps taking classes for years after his eligibility expires...
They're called Doctors. (I couldn't resist)
