Other First Practice Notes

Hey all

I crammed a bunch of stuff into my recap of the team's first practice, but there are a few things I wanted to get in there that didn't really fit.

When the media asked Beamer about the news that David Wilson would be hanging it up, he said he hadn't heard that he was officially retiring from the game, and seemed pretty down about it.

We have education meetings every night. We talk about different things, and one of them is graduation and it just shows you the importance of it. Heres a guy that, one day hes got a great future, number one draft choice and how quickly it can change and thats when your degree comes in handy," he said, with a snap of his fingers.

"What a character he was, and a great guy to have on your team, all the things that he does to make you say what can he do next? I feel for him, but I think hes the kind of kid thats going to be ok. Whatever hes doing, hes going to be good at it. People are going to be glad to have him around.

Beamer also got asked about the decision to close the team's two fall scrimmages leading up to the season. He didn't give much of an answer.

"There's things that go on and sometimes its easier just to let us work on things that we need to be working on," he said. "It's hard to regulate. If you open it to a few people, then unless its just a clean break then its hard, so we thought that was the way to go.

The popular rationale for the decision is they don't want anyone to get a look at the QBs competing, but with one game before the big matchup against OSU, it's not like the Buckeyes won't know who the starter will be.

At least Beamer says he'll miss the company the media provides at the scrimmages.

I am going to miss you," he said. "I told them on the way over, Im going to see my favorite people.

He also contended that he proved his love for the press by being the only coach to play golf with them at the ACC kickoff. When someone brought up that UNC coach Larry Fedora did as well, he just said "no, I'm pretty sure I was the only one."

Who cares if he's right or not, that was fun.
