Ford and Phillips may be more talented, but we will miss Willie Byrn next year. His leadership and dependability will be hard to replace. I hope that the "Paperboy" goes out with a big game. And get in the damn endzone!

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Agreed, his role really diminished this year, but that was to be expected considering the talent that we had at WR last year compared to this year.

And Bucky. A lot of those routes he was running was what they had Byrn doing in some shape or form last year.

I don't know as much about other schools and all their players but one of the things I love about VT is our development of walk-on talent. These kids are over looked, under valued and shown the door on their dreams but they know if they come to VT and work their ass off they have as good a chance as anyone to play. Willie, Dinardo and Rogers are on the list of walk-on talent that was developed and coached to exceed expectations. Truly a great tradition here and I hope it never changes.

Is Chase Williams a former walk-on?

Pretty sure he had a scholarship out of high school, I remember reading somewhere that Bud almost played him as a true freshman

Yeah, I can confirm he was a scholarship player. He was a pretty big name high school player. His high school was close to mine. I believe I even took my SAT in the same room as he did one Saturday.

Theoretically couldn't Byrn do well in a league like the CFL or the arena leagues?

Arena requires most of their players to play both ways... not sure if he has any defensive skills

I thought arena required you to have at least 2 felonies on your record.

If that's the case then technically couldn't the league use more outstanding individuals and players like Byrn?

I could see Byrne in CFL before Arena. Could also see him getting into coaching, since he has the mind for the game, but maybe not the size. I mean look at Shane; not sure he ever ran for yards in college, but he's been coaching on multiple teams that didn't really need to hire a Beamer, he just knows the game.

John C Mckendree

But he's not even the smallest, slowest or physically inept WR. Surely he could succeed as a starter in the CFL or arena.

While its certainly a long shot, Morehead played with Manning at Indy and Manning really emphasizes that his receivers run good routes which Byrn is well known for. So Morehead might be able to help him get an UFA shot in Denver

Willie Byrn the next Wes Welker?

I hope not man, he will get all the smarts knocked out of him from all those concussions!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

With his work ethic, can-do attitude, and willingness to help others, he'll succeed at whatever he sets his sights on. Darn proud he's a Hokie.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"
