I read an article on ESPN's gameday app that said Pauk Johnson has received a four year extension and will most likely be given a pay increase making him the 4th highest paid coach in the ACC behind Fisher, Dabo, and Petrino.....yeah....

good we know we will get 3 more years of medicore football out of GT
I'd love to have mediocre football out of VT right now
Its this kind of attitude by fans and ADs that leads to Kirk Ferentz a guy who had a couple of decent seasons got a big contract then tanked...
Glad we're redefining mediocre. Johnson is 58-34 in seven seasons at GT, headed to their third ACC Championship Game and Johnson was named the 2014 ACC Coach of the Year his third ACC COY honor as Tech head coach (2008, 2009).
VTech, since GT hired PJ
64-30
ACC Championship Games - 2
COY Awards - 0
How many ACC Championships Taken away? Also what has his bowl game record at GT been?
The overall win loss is misleading his ACC record over his time at GT was:
2008 5-3
2009 7-1
2010 4-4
2011 5-3
2012 5-3
2013 5-3
2014 6-2
with the exception of the last few years we have generally be 7-1 in conference play
I would say that averaging an 8-5 record with one conference title constitutes mediocre... They haven't been LOLUVA bad but they haven't been consistently good either. Also, they played in one of those conference championship games when they were 6-6...
Also, we've played in 3 ACCCG's in that time span (2008, 2010, 2011) and won 2.
Also, lol at using ACC COY awards as evidence for anything. Al Groh and Mike London both won one. Heck, Al Groh had two! It's simply the award for being better than expected in the preseason.
The ACC COY is for exactly the opposite of what we have at VT. When your team isn't in a position to win big and does. There's a reason Jimbo has 0 COy awards. His average with his setup is to win the conference.
Yup because they won when the odds were against them
Being Coach of the Year is for being able to do what a coach does best, using what you have to win. There's a reason Duke and GT have Coaches that won it.
Ok context on the comment the last three years he has been on the hot seat and his on the field product has been bad...This year he turns it on and wins a new contract...So the joke being he will go back to being ok...
Mediocre?
Interesting that you consider winning your division and being ranked #11 nationally Mediocre. Kind of puts a complete damper on all those accomplishments Beamer has had in the ACC.
Not including this year what would you describe the last 4 years under PJ? I believe we had a thread going about him being fired this year
Assuming PJ is fired
We can pick and choose whatever seasons we want, but if you look at the same timeframe (2008-present), GT and VT have had just about the same amount of success. All those seasons you mention about us being usually 7-1 or so were from 2004-2008. We had two good years (2010 and 2011, 8-0 and 7-1) and then otherwise we've had the same record as GT, or worse. That's why the Techmo Bowl has been so important. If you want to call GT mediocre, you have to say the same, or worse, about VT in the same time frame. Call Paul Johnson's teams "boring" or "frustrating" but they're good at the system they run.
Yep...
Actually, the icing on the cake in regards to probably needing to revise how we think of ourselves over the first decade in the ACC is what FSU is doing right now. 3 titles in a row, undefeated for 2 straight with 2 BCS wins, a National title, and a playoff berth. This is the kind of champion the conference needed, and not one that routinely lost its biggest games and annually came out of top of a mediocre league almost by default. It's a shame but there's a reason people pined for FSU to be back during our run because everyone knew they were capable of this and the conference as a whole was suffering because teams like this year's GT were annually coming out on top.
Actually the ACC wants the U back as well...The conference is setup perfectly for the U and FSU to have a show down every year in the ACC championship game.
Since the ACC moved the ACCCG to Charlotte they have conceded that the U isn't the top desire. Still of course they do want it to be reignited. It is the closest the ACC has to the atm - UT (or now Texas Oklahoma) or USC and UCLA. Michigan v OSU. And of course the Iron Bowl
It was the rivalry, everyone else wanted to be
I wasnt watching football the week of thanksgiving can you tell me what the Iron Bowl is and who plays in it?
The Iron Bowl is a football rivalry game played annually by the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn University Tigers. The series is considered one of the best and most hard-fought rivalries in all of sports.
The two teams played in the last five BCS National Championship Games, with Alabama winning in 2010, 2012, and 2013 and Auburn winning in 2011 but losing in 2014.
The 1947 Alabama State Legislature threatened to withhold state funding from the schools unless they did resume the rivalry. With that threat in mind, the president of Auburn (then officially named the Alabama Polytechnic Institute), and Alabama decided during the winter and spring of 1948 to renew the series.
I think I remember that game. The best rivalries in all of sports? That's Army-Navy.
Nope?
Is that the one where the one team tried to kick a 56 yd FG when they didn't need to do so, just to try and rub it in, the other team used that last play of the game to score a TD and win?
Nope?
Ok. different game played 2 weeks earlier maybe?
Ah, the one the impartial ESPN was spouting all over everyone else's rivalry game in order to hype the thing so they could make money on it? That one? So famous they had to dis everyone else's game?
The one with national interest because it's played in the cultural center of the U.S. - Alabama? Ah,that one.
But PAWWWWLLLL
Nice.
We are getting far a field here my main argument here is that Paul Johnson has one good season and all of a sudden he gets a contract extension...As far as the numbers are concerned I used all seasons from his time at GT. I think the 7-1 is fair if I was looking at how VT has typically fared in the ACC over its history there. have the last years been rough at VT? YES are we a better team by record then GT? No but lets remember our coaches record against GT is 5-2 with a late last minute field goal winning the game for them this year.
This is the best season GT has had in a while, no doubt, but consider the fact that in just about all of Johnson's years, they're in contention for a berth in the title game. That's a reflection of the ACC more than anything. Clearly the GT administration is happy with what Johnson is doing on and off the field, and I just think it's funny to call GT "mediocre" when that's basically just a characterization of the entire ACC, though I wouldn't necessarily say "mediocre," just a lot of parity among decent, but not great, teams.
Funny I looked up mediocre and this is what I got:

So we are their Pittsburgh.. A team they should always beat but somehow usually find a way to lose.
Id say that we are more like Georgia to them. A game that they win every once in a while and its a big deal when it happens. Thats why they gave him a contract extension, because it was a big deal to beat both in one season
Somewhere in Blacksburg, Bud Foster is spitting out a string of symbols that you find on the number keys.
He looks exactly like my grandmother.
I was really hoping he would move on to an sec school and make all of the sec miserable for a while.
Why would an SEC school hire him? He just beat GA the second time in his tenure a GT
Knees across the ACC are still in jeopardy! Save the knees! Fire Coach Chin Balls!
ChopBlockGate will never be forgiven
LOL, yeah...I was thinking, "Time to increase DL recruiting numbers".
Side note: Anyone else see Goldman go out REALLY early last night with a "foot" injury, and imagine him thinking, "Eff this man, I didn't sign up for this...I got NFL business"?
