I'm trying to pick a projector for my basement media room. A few facts:

Room is 18' x 18'
Ceiling is 9'
Screen size will be 100"
Throw distance around 14'

Is there a specific projector that you'd recommend? I'm looking to spend no more than $1300 - 1500.

A few that I've looked at include:

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350. I like that it has horizontal and vertical lens shift

BenQ W1070, Optoma HD25LV, and BenQ W1080ST also got good reviews, but they only had vertical lens shift.

Any advice would be appreciated.

While this is extremely off topic I'm in a similar predicament. I would appreciate any knowledge on projectors and/or screens. Thanks for posting this Eddie Royal.

Personally I prefer the Epson PowerLite series. I think that overall every model is extremely well reviewed. Not to say the BenQ isn't but I've never had experience with it.

out of the 1400-1500 price range.

Wild-I have a 32" I bought in '06 for 2600- and it was a good deal!

I have a 55" Samsung in the living room.

The basement is screaming for a projector.

Well, for me my wall is splattered with Hokie memorabilia that a tv would block. A projector that goes up to the ceiling when not in use allows me to show off all my garb.

You should check out Speaker City (ask for Bernard)

I don't know I hear Rufus at Home Video Solutions is the "Best in the Business."

We went to Best Buy, their Magnolia people were pretty helpful. Granted this was about 6 years ago, but we got a projector for an 11' screen. I can't remember the exact model since I'm not home, but I'm pretty sure it was a Sony. Since we bought the projector from them they gave us the receiver for free and offered us a PS3 for $80 (it was cheaper than a Blu Ray player). The Optoma we had before the Sony was really good, only had to change the bulb once and it lasted 10 years until we decided to go HD.

Rip his freaking head off!

The wirecutter is a site that may help you (this links directly to their projectors). They do a good analysis of all the reviews out there, and when possible get their hands on the item themselves.

At the very least, they have all the sources at the bottom so you can dig into the research yourself.

It could be worse.

I've had the 8350 for a couple years and I've been very happy with it. No 3D, but that's not a feature I care about. Very versatile as far as location and good image quality. Also replacement bulbs are (relatively) cheap.

Cool. How many times have you had to change bulbs? Any other issues? Is it loud? What kind of mount did you get?

Oh, and www.projectorpeople.com is where I picked mine up.

DBU, how dark is your room? How dark are your walls?

One person stated that a walk out basement, with beige walls will not be good for a projector.
