Hokie Softball Team Starts Season With 2 Wins

The Hokie softball team kicked off the 2014 season today in Nashville, winning two games in the Music City Classic against Miami (OH) and Tennessee State.

VT: 6 Miami (OH): 1
VT: 5 TN State: 0

Sophomore pitchers Kelly Heinz and Maggie Tyler earned the wins--Heinz getting the first against Miami and Tyler adding an 8 strikeout performance in the second game to get the shutout. It can't hut that Angela Tincher O'Brien, the former Hokie pitcher and current living legend, joined the staff this year as the pitching coach.

Senior center fielder Amanda Ake provided much of the offensive firepower going 4/7 on the day with 5 RBIs, including a 2 -run HR. The Hokies also got some nice contributions from some of the younger players. Vanessa Gonzalez, a true freshman, started both games at left field and had 2 hits, an RBI, and scored 4 runs. Fellow true freshman Aysha Richardson had a solid outing as a pitch hitter/runner going 1/1 and stealing 2 bases.

They will conclude the tournament with a game tomorrow against Lipscomb University at 1:00 PM, Eastern Time. If you want to read more about it, here is the article from hokiesports.com:

Congrats to coach Scot Thomas and the team for the strong start. And if you're in the Blacksburg area, I would encourage you to attend as many home games as you can, both softball and baseball. Both teams put in a lot of work, compete at a high level, and deserve all the support from Hokie Nation they can get. The games are a lot of fun, THEY"RE FREE, and if the weather's nice, there's really no better way to spend a Spring afternoon in Blacksburg.

Go Hokies!

(edited so the scores won't be confused with the win/loss records of the opposing teams)
