An early Happy Birthday to Deshawn McClease

Deshawn McClease will decide between Virginia Tech and University of Maryland on July 16th, his 18th birthday. His commitment could have serious implications in getting Josh Sweat to sign with the Hokies. McClease is speedster who has good size for an RB and has room to grow. He would make a great addition to the VT 2015 recruiting class.

Let us wish Deshawn McClease an early happy birthday and hope he selects the Hokies.

After reading his quotes we have 2 strikes against us. One is the ACC is pretty weak compared to the Big Ten IMO and he wants to major in Business. The last big recruit that wanted to major in business decided to go to FSU.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't see this working out well for us.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Which makes no sense to me, as well as insults me a bit being a Pamplin grad. Isn't Pamplin becoming one of the more competitve business schools in the country??

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

It wasn't a swipe at Pamplin, more a swipe on the kid's desire to get an easy grade at FSU possibly and deal with football. Hopefully this one has bigger aspirations and want's a Degree from a top 10 school in Business not a top 10 school in thuggery

Ah see I wasn't looking at it from that perspective. And I didnt mean to make it seem like I thought you were taking a swipe, rather questioning why if these kids want to do business why the heck are they running away from Pamplin

No worries, I should have clarified my response. Another big thing I took from his interview is he said if I take football out of i would I be happy just being a student there.. Hmmm Virginia Tech vs Maryland no idea who wins there

Oh man, VT hands down. I've had the opportunity to talk to quite a few folks who've experienced both UMd and VT and they've said VT was the much better experience. Some of these folks did undergrad at UMd and grad at Tech and some were the other way around, but it was almost unanimous that the atmosphere at UMd is just frenzied and really stressful. Also, college park is a slum and blacksburg is beautiful.

I can vouch for that. I've been to UMd campus and all I can say it really has going for it is proximity to DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis.

US News & World Report ranks Pamplin #43 overall (which puts it in the top 10 percent of the 445 US undergraduate business programs accredited by the AACSB International) and #26 among the public institutions.

I feel like top 10% is definitely competitive.

VT '15

The ACC is generally considered to be a better conference than the Big Ten for football among some of the talking heads.

I think the bigger worry would be the last 3 years lack of a running game and the fact that we are VERY deep and VERY young at RB right now.

You're quickly dismissing the best thing we have going for us...he is still visiting VT again to show his parents the campus. That was all I needed to see to make up my mind...stepping out of the car in front of Burruss Hall and my parents were nearly as excited as I was. We've got this!

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

This should be the pitch when they get here: "Sure it's beautiful and everything, but you know what? you also don't have to worry (as much) about your car getting broken into while you're touring campus"

I disagree with you on this point. The B1G has anOSU and Mich St. Other than that..they're awful. The ACC has FSU (which just won the National Title, in case you forgot) and Clemson (who just beat anOSU) and then everyone else. Duke gave AtM a run for their money. We basically beat Michigan (two years ago though..) and then admittedly the rest of the ACC isn't great. But to say the ACC is pretty weak compared to the B1G is false IMO

Onward and upward

I hope its the Hokies. But wherever you chose to go to College, Happy birthday Deshwan McClease.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

As said above, I don't see him landing in Blacksburg. The biggest strikes to me are the perception that the big-10 is a bigger stage (not true imo as the big10 has been losing its luster), the fact that Maryland plans to use him more throughout the field rather than in vt's 2-back system, and the fact that at the end of the day he wants a cool place to call home. Hokie goggles aside, Blacksburg is not the most attractive place to move to unless you're already familiar with it and understand its glory.

I still hope he chooses the Hokies but it doesn't seem like the right fit for him and I hope I am pleasantly surprised in a week.

He's no good to me dead.

he wants a cool place to call home.

College Park is not a cool place... DC is, though.

Yah, I don't understand the appeal of College Park, MD unless it is real close to your hometown.
It is not DC, and as a football player he won't have any time to live the DC life.

I've been to the campuses'/towns of VT, UVA, Miami, GT, UNC, Duke, Clemson, Pitt and MD and by far the least appealing campus/town for me was College Park, MD. Maybe it's just me though. I just don't get the allure.

one of the first people who commented on the testudo article said that he wasn't sure if VT was the best football program in the state of Virginia. Clearly maryland fans are very up to date on their football facts.

Maryland fans aren't exactly known for their intelligence

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Maryland might not be the best football program in PG county...

I mean, Maryland must be really proud to be mentioned in the same breath as a team like Rutgers. If they don't see that as a reality check, they really are delusional.

I saw that comment...the idiot basically said "Is Virginia Tech even better than UVA?"
Maryland gets one fluke win against us in a horrible game and all the sudden they think they are world beaters...suck it MD!

VHokie

Its like they don't even realize they're being brought into the Big Ten to be the annual pasty whipping posts of the powers that be in the conference... football and basketball.

Give em 2 years before they're regretting that move.

It will be a rock in my horseshoe for a long time that they won that game. I want to play them again to get the taste of rotten apples out of my mouth.

And to add to that, if we had won that game we would've taken the lead in the overall series. Now we're below .500 against them dammit.

Not trying to act like a jerk but you guys are reading way in too much in what he is saying. Remember the UNCle tweet last week from Hill? I think we are in good shape with McClease.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Hey Deshawn! VT wants you... To have a Happy Birthday! It was only a couple of years ago that we had Darren Evans, Ryan Williams and David Wilson all contribute as young RBs. You'll do great here!

Happy birthday Deshawn McClease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to be a party pooper, but this won't impact Sweat one way or the other at all. Not even a little bit.

However, happy birthday Deshawn!
