VT Announces Football Fan Appreciation Day

Per the VT Athletics Facebook page:

Looks like more evidence that Whit was serious about fan experience and connection. No real details yet, but mark it on your calendars, Hokie fans!

Happy.

Happy for the current students and the program in general. Sad that my two years in Blacksburg coincided with two worst football seasons in the last 2 decades and the James Johnson era of men's hoops. It's fitting that this is happening the week after I move. Also, missed out on getting to work in the new Engineering building.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

You know you're a nerd when you read the above comment and your sad because it reminded you of how cool the new engineering building is and how you'll never get to go to class in it.

I went inside for the first time today, and it's incredible. Makes Randolph Hall look like...Randolph Hall.

Last year was my first year on campus and had to witness poor seasons from the football and basketball programs. Basketball will definitely improve each year with Buzz and the great players they've been adding. Do you think football will rise significantly as well or am I in for a mediocre 3 years?

We're on the rise. The next great Tech RB is on the roster right now. I don't know if it will be Edmunds, Williams, or McKenzie (maybe all three will pan out), or someone else, but he's on the roster. We have the deepest tight end group in the conference, possibly the nation, with Malleck, Cline, and Hodges, and none of them will convert to QB, because we have a really good QB and his name is Michael Brewer. I believe we only lost one WR (DJ Coles) whose contribution was severely limited due to injuries. That position will only get better. We have arguably the best secondary in the nation and both of our corners are sophomores. Also, Bud Foster.

That is the glass-half-full perspective, which is the perspective I choose to have. The truth is we could win 5 games next year, or we could win 11. I choose to lean towards the latter because perspective is a choice and I think it's funner this way. As Robert Duvall says in Secondhand Lions: "Just because something isn't true, doesn't mean you can't believe in it." If I was here for the next three years, I'd be listening to Pat Benatar at full volume and telling everyone who doesn't think we'll beat Ohio State to either eff off or sack up, even if their probably right. And even if we lost every game this season, I would do the exact same thing next year. Sorry this turned from a biased team assessment to unsolicited advice, but to answer your original question, you're in for the best 3 years of your life.

Heh, I remember this feeling, only my first year on campus the football team was 2-8-1 and the bball team went 10-18 under coach Foster. I can still remember clearly sitting in the stands in the rain with my parents watching us get absolutely demolished by Miami. I think they gave us more yards in penalties than we gained in rushing or receiving.

However, the next year we went to the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl (thet's the one that began the bowl streak!) and the men's bball team turned things around to go 18-10. And at the conclusion of their respective 1995-96 seasons, the football team beat Texas in the Sugar Bowl and the bball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney, after having won the NIT the previous year.

Obviously none of that has any bearing on what's going to happen in 2014 and beyond, but I'll choose to take it as a reason to be optimistic in light of all the other good things that have happened (Whit, Buzz, etc).

Yeah, a solid 40% of my decision to pursue my doctorate had something to do with getting student football tickets for another 4 years.

Only 40%?

"Exit light..."

Yeah, I have my doubts it was only 40%

Damn, guess I'm going to have to make another trip to Blacksburg!

I would love to learn more about this. I expected lots of fan and recruit focused events back at the Spring Game and was mildly disappointed. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction. I will try to be there because this will likely be the date of the first public scrimmage as well.
