"Im really sick of hearing ACC titles as the ceiling," Byrn said. "Everyone came to Virginia Tech wanting to play in national championship games. No ones lost sight of that. Were going through a new playbook and weve had some offensive struggles, but no ones lost sight of us playing for national championships. And our defense is playing at that level. We have to get our offense to that level and weve got to get our special teams back to that level. And well start seeing results like that."

...and I have a feeling that he is going to play really well for us. We don't need someone throwing for 400 yards and 5TDs a game (although that'd be nice). We just need someone that will protect the ball and help move the team down the field. The TEs and more experienced TEs should give him plenty of options.

logan threw for 391 against BC last season. lots of yards usually means we are losing. we dont need 400 yards, we need 3 TDs and then we get up and let the D and the run game handle the rest.

Correction - with our offensive philosophy, passing for 400 yds reflects desperation. That does NOT in any way shape or form, mean we do not NEED 400 yards of passing offense. It only means that we can't comprehend it being part of a successful offensive philosophy. That doesn't mean it cannot be a positive influence. Only that our coaching staff doesn't understand how to integrate it. Assuming a running game will get you up three TDs 'to relax' in a game means that you're likely well into the late 3rd/early 4th quarter before you can do that. With a passing offense, you can achieve that margin by the end of the first quarter. Lots of folks don't understand the difference.

"With a passing offense, you can achieve that margin (up 3 TDs) by the end of the first quarter"? If it were that simple, why do any teams even try to run the ball? Because throwing for 400 yards is far more often than not a recipe for a great, big L against decent competition...something that most people understand and the VT coaches completely comprehend is not part of a successful offensive strategy.

Because if there's one thing that our coaching staff has proven over the last decade or so, it is that they are well versed in how to construct a successful offensive strategy. 'Most people' are now aware that a strong passing game is central to success at the top level in college football now.

Got a hunch that it will be a while before another Hokie hits that yardage or catches 4TDs in a game. Let alone both. Or I'm wrong and Loeffler is a king. Let's hope for the latter.

Yeah. I did a little research...Randall against Cuse 504 yards - Big East record at the time. Logan with 391 against BC was close, but the closest before that was Randall again - 398 yards against Aaron Rodgers led Cal. Crazy that we lost all three of those.

Yeah, but with us, and many teams actually, big yards = low score. I remember the Marshall game many years ago...we won the game, but a Byron Leftwich with a broken foot/ankle/leg/whatever that had to be carried from one play to the next, put up something like 600 yards on our defense, and still lost that game.

I think you are talking bout 2002. That was the 2nd game of my Freshman year at Tech. That game was well in hand before we ever let him throw the ball around the yard (406 yards passing for Leftwich). VT vs Marshall

Although there is only limited evidence to support it, I have a weird confidence in Brewer. Can't really explain it, I just feel like he is going to exceed expectations.

Happy to hear that he's doing well. If Brewer can play the "game manager" role that'd be fine by me. 10-15 Smart/accurate passes per game and the ability to scramble if the pocket breaks down. I hope that our running game, preferably Edmunds and Juice, and our o-line can make it possible for him to have that role.

"I certainly dont want to be the one senior class that loses to them in the last 10 years, so its marked on my calendar for that reason," he said. "We want to continue that dominance. But we never lose sight that theyre there and anything can happen in a rivalry game."

Not until fall practice opens up and even then probably not for a few weeks. Coaches will need to see how he performs in scrimmages I'm sure. Though I imagine the depth chart will fluctuate many times along the way for competition sake

I just filled some space in my shorts.
We've waited and hoped and prayed.

We are going to win the MNC!
I really hope Brewer gets the #1 spot and plays well this fall. It'd be huge for the team.

BUT, a few games of 400 yards passing and Foster's defense... Wow
When was the last time a Hokie qb threw for 400? I can't recall Logan or tyrod doing it. Was it Randall?
Against 'Cuse in the Carrier Dome maybe?
Randall vs 'cuse in 2002, i believe. he threw for over 500 that day...and we lost.

See Bears, Baylor.
I believe they've also had 7-6 and 8-5 records in the last 4 seasons (sound familiar?) and haven't played a decent reg season OOC team in years.
But.. But. they had Bob Griffen III he won the Heisman... But..But.. Their WR's run a 3.5 40 and its like a track meet on the football field...
Ohhh wait they got man handled by UCF in their Bowl Game. You're only as good as your last defensive player, and I think we have about 20 great ones.
GO HOKIES!!!!!

Did Wilford have 5 catches for 300 yards and 3 TD's in that game?
279 on *looking it up* 8 catches. 4 TDs.
Still that is an impressive average every other catch was a TD.

He was carried in the Marshall vs. Akron game in 2002.
They forgot to carry him into the NFL
Heh, heh heh... He said STDs

While I do hope that the running game is our strength I don't want a game manager type QB. I want to be able to air it out when we need to.

Can't wait for August.. It's killing me. I want to see his first throw/rep and just go wowww Vanilla Vick it is!
can't....stop.....watching.....
That may be one of the F-ing Funniest things I have seen in a while. Holy $#I!. (Maybe its only because I have 2 dogs, but that's hilarious).
God, you guys are killing me. This is the ...greatest...website...ever.
Did you say the best dog costume ever?
Can't stop laughing, that is awesome.
Any word on when/who will be announced starting QB? I think everyone believes it is going to be Brewer but I know it hasn't been officially been said.

Lefty will probably keep it a secret until right before kickoff. No need to give Bill & Mary additional information. /s
We should have a pretty good idea on August 30th around 4pm.
I really hope you mean August.
Yup, fixed that. That'd be an oddly specific time for a month into the season.
Man, we have to wait a month into the season? That Bill & Mary game might be a bit more stressful that way.
