There is a pretty interesting article by David Teel regarding the student athletic fees charged by state schools in VA:
Teel Time: Virginia Tech's student athletics fee by far state's lowest
Here are a couple of quotes that really stood out:
According to a December report by the states Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, Techs 2012-13 athletics fee of $267 was less than half that of any other state school George Mason had the second-lowest at $577 and more than 75 percent below the average of $1,185.

If we raised that by $500, we'd be able to fund two new female's sports programs as well as one male's sports program. Then still have money left to pay down capital expenditures...
Not a student anymore, but if I were I'd rather save $500/yr (that's TEN RAILS EACH YEAR people!!!!) than add three new sports programs.
EDIT: THAT'S ACTUALLY 50 RAILS EACH YEAR!!! That's FORTY more reasons than to keep the athletic fee unchanged than I originally thought!
Since when did a TOTS rail go up to $50? Last I checked they were $9 and I like to give a tip for the hard working bar tenders. Not a $41 one though.
Welp, if our engineering school's ranking every takes a hit, you can blame it on me, because I obviously can't do math. Thanks for the correction.
This may possibly be the most relevant GIF/Meme ever used in key play history. So pissed I didn't think of it first!
I really hope you aren't an engineer.
Ha, somehow graduated as one. No more though. Looks like I made the right decision.
Having SimCity flashbacks.
I would say UVA students should demand a refund, but if they got it, probably no one would show up to collect the money.
Coach London's services don't come cheap. They gotta pay for all those timeouts somehow.
All money well-spent!
By "timeouts" you mean 7 on 7 coaches right?
Another reason its great to go to VT. And another reason there is no excuse not to be in Lane on Saturday!!!
Come on next generation Hokies, get there and get loud. (And get off my lawn!!!)
That would be a very simple way to finance some of these non-revenue sports that always get discussed as being necessary by folks. Like hockey, or lacrosse, etc. Raising the student fee to just below average for the state would instantly give that money.
idk, I think I'd rather have the tuition as affordable as possible for thousands of kids instead of worrying about having a sport for a few dozen
So then, eliminate baseball, track, golf, and every sport except football & men's basketball. That way we could save another few hundred for those thousands of students in order to get the bare bones pricing. Oh, wait. Some of those thousands of students might actually be more attracted to a school because of the variety of athletics and activities to participate in and watch. That's right, how easily we forget.
I would be completely ok with eliminating enough sports to eliminate the athletic fee.... either that or make the athletic fee optional, that way the "thousands" of kids who go to VT to watch sports can pay an athletic fee to do so.. and the kids who don't desire to attend any sporting events can use the money to eat, pay for tutors etc
Monster edit job there on that comment! One of the more comprehensive I've seen so far.
I'd just like to take a minute to say "UVA-Wise" and laugh maniacally.
UVa-Wise is the reason that, a couple random times throughout the year, I make it a point to go over to UVa's Wiki page and change the name of the school to 'The University of Virginia at Charlottesville"
for you...
Like UNC-CH.
UVA-Wise is my hometown school. Former name was Clinch Valley College. My sister's alma mater. Former Hokie Carroll Dale was the AD there for a while. They should have disassociated themselves from any semblance of wahooism. Their nickname is the Cavaliers, but the colors are red & gray. And I laugh with you.
EDIT: Ok, whiile Dale was technically my homie, danged autocorrect tried to change his Hokie-ness. That's what I get for typing after 11 on my phone.
This one's for all the former homies.
