I grew up in Christiansburg from 1982-1992 and have many great memories of going to VT games as a kid. Watching BRUCE!, sneaking into games as my dad was a volunteer ticket-taker, sitting wherever me and my friends wanted (there were plenty of empties), etc.
But my favorite memory is from around 1984 or so (I was 10). I don't have a clue who we were playing, as that's not the point of the story. I was walking out behind the North EZ bleachers (if there were even bleachers at that point - maybe not). Anyway, a FG or extra point was being kicked... This was before there were nets to keep the ball in the stadium. So, the kick comes through and flies out of the north end of the stadium. Out of nowhere, I see a frat boy catch the ball in mid-air and on the run. He's heading east, north of the stadium. Cops are chasing, when he chucks the ball over a chainlink fence to another frat boy (or group of). They catch it on the run as others are chasing. They chuck it once more over the last fence and it is caught by a last frat boy for the final run into the woods.
Epic. Game over. Ball is probably still sitting on a shelf in that frat house today. Or, so I like to imagine.
I would LOVE to know what frat that was. It gave me a memory I have laughed about for the last 30 years.

First time I went to Lane Stadium was a game against JUMS Madison back in 2003. I got to see D-Hall take a punt back for a touchdown and Kevin Jones score in a more favorable memory of a game against that damned school from Harrisonburg.
My next game after that wasn't until 2007 during Tyrod's freshman year, the home opener after the LSU debacle. I knew he was da real deal from that day.
I remember that 2003 game, as well. I ended up catching the extra point after one of our hundred or so touchdowns that day. The first and only time that happened in all my years of going to games.
This story is awesome, thanks for sharing, MusicCity. I love hearing stories of harmless, yet clever and well-orchestrated, civil disobedience.
Total 80s Frat Move!
Good story MusciCityHokie, thanks for sharing.
