That line is absurd. The reason UNC smoked us 2 years ago was Gio Bernard. They don't have Gio anymore. Our team last year was worse than the one we'll have this year and somehow that makes up for a 20 point swing? Unless they're expecting UNC to be a legitimate national title contender, this is silly talk.
But then again, ever since Butchie was coach, people have been drastically overvaluing the quality of football UNC plays before every season. Every year, they think they're going undefeated. Every year, they not only go undefeated, but can't even manage a trip to Charlotte for the conference title game. This year will be no different.

I think sports writers and Vegas have just come to assume that since these kids don't spend much, if any, time in class, they must be devoting more time to football. So if they can spend more time learning the plays and in the weight room, they must be better.

Well we know they don't spend anytime in the classroom in chapel hill. But even then no amount of practice or prep is gonna save them from getting p*wnd when they face us.

With everything that's happened at UNC recently, I'd think the players will have to go to class more to avoid further punishment. Because they'll be in the classroom, their football program will decline. Just a guess.

They didn't have Gio when they scored 80 points in a game last year. 80 points, that is more points then both tech and their opponents score combined 95% of the time. I am afraid of that UNC offense they had a murderers row to open last year and then killed everybody pretty much on the back half of their schedule.

they lost by 24 to ECU... ECU!!! .... AT HOME!!!!!
the schedule is in VTs favor for this game, as VTs previous game is against Western Michigan, and UNC has VT sandwiched in between Clemson and Notre Dame... it's VTs 6th game, so whoever is the QB will have about half a season behind them and should be hitting rhythm by then (fingers crossed), the spread seems unrealistic

I'll take the downvotes coming, but at this point it doesn't seem that out of line to me. We have an offense that does not yet have a defined QB (Brewer's impact potential aside), a young OL working with a new coach (with a history of problems from that unit), and young (albeit promising) skill position players. We have a D that lost quite a bit but should be fine overall. However, no one outside of B'burg knows much about our front 7 not named Maddy.
On the other side of the field you have a pre season top 25 UNC team with a dynamic offense with a bunch of guys coming back. Their D will likely be mid range at best, but given the Hokies Offensive woes over the years, a mediocre D can do just fine against them.
So a 10 point win by UNC at home isn't inconceivable at this point and I think Vegas has it right for now.
However, if Brewer comes in a starts clicking and our front 7 on D come together well early, we can very much win that game. But I see it either being a VT win in close game or UNC getting momentum early and winning by 10+. Just based on what is known at this point.
Just my take. Here's hoping to a big summer in Blacksburg from the young/new guys on both sides of the ball!

it seems out of place I think is the main point, if VT is bad enough to be a double digit underdog at UNC then we shouldn't be a TD favorite vs GT, 16 point favorite vs BC, and a favorite vs Miami... UNC is not that much better than these 3 teams

I definitely don't think we should be a 16 point favorite vs BC considering they regularly give us trouble. I think the UNC line is a little high, but could see them being a 7 point favorite.

The UVa line seems about right. Yes, there are questions about Virginia Tech's offense, and rightfully so, but there are probably more questions about the Virginia offense. And you can never tell if that'll be a Dead Man Walking game forMike London. I've seen teams completely give up if they know the coach is on the way out.
Good ole cav football

I don't know that the BC line is so crazy. That team is going to take more than a step back without Andre Williams. Plus...that will sooooooooo be a revenge game. Big Time.
UNC game is definitely too much. At least at this time.
I would take the Hokies and those points for the OSU game. Beamer always gets his guys ready for big season kick off games. Don't think the Hokies will win, but if they can play special teams, and whoever the qb is doesn't puke himself, it'll be a game.

Ehhh... last time we went into an early season game against a top team at the opponent's house, we got run out of the building. Our special teams are still turrible, our offense is a work in progress, and our defense, while very talented, is still a bit young, especially at the edge. If ever there was bad timing for this game for our team, its Week 2 this year.
Not saying we'll get smoked like we did down in LSU, but I'm going to avoid that 18 point line.

I always like to play the money line when VT is a huge underdog. I don't really think they'll win, but if they do, it's a hell of a night. A lot more fun and a lot less nerve-racking.

Bet the UNC game now !! before the season starts and they figure out how good we really are. Because by the time that the UNC game week rolls around, we will probably be favored. You heard it here first.

The Golden Nugget offered some respite from the college football summer malaise by releasing 200 early point spreads for this season on Friday.
Seven of the Hokies' games were on the list. They are:
Sept. 6: Virginia Tech (+18) at Ohio State
Sept. 20: Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech (-7)
Oct. 4: Virginia Tech (+10) at North Carolina
Oct. 16: Virginia Tech (+1) at Pittsburgh
Oct. 23: Miami at Virginia Tech (-1)
Nov. 1: Boston College at Virginia Tech (-16)
Nov. 28: Virginia at Virginia Tech (-14)
Hilarious looking at this in retrospect. The Gold Nugget didn't pick one of these games correctly. Hopefully they were correct about the UVA game.

I've never bet money on a sports game in my life, but that UNC line may change that. That's crazy talk.

They scored 80 against a quasi-FBS team in ODU.

This ^^^ seems to be the more plausible explanation.
I'm not ready to accept the notion that the Hokies will be better this year than last year as fact.
Remember we're replacing a senior qb, and half of a defense. You may be right, but I'll just remain hopeful, yet skeptical.
At the same time, booking the Tarheels as 10 pt favorites is a bit ridiculous.

I see what you're saying, but AB has a pretty good point here:
That was about as a bad a day as you could ask for (and at UNC, mind you), and still "only" ended in a 2-TD deficit.
Good ole cav football

Death Valley at night is a different animal altogether.

Well, you like to think they are ready, but I've seen them come out looking lost several times too. Boise and LSU come to mind quick.
the BC line being higher than the LOLUVA line is laughable
they may be considering London getting fired mid-season and LOLUVA actually having a coach by then
Or perhaps a self coached team rather than having London influence the players.
Lets hope that doesn't happen. I vote for London for life at hoo-ville
Headed to Vegas on Friday!
Should I throw down on that UNC game?
Or maybe put $10 on the Hokies to go all the way to the MNC!?
Bet the UNC game now !! before the season starts and they figure out how good we really are. Because by the time that the UNC game week rolls around, we will probably be favored. You heard it here first.
The question is... how much? :)
So I put $10 on the MNC. It was fun and gave me a thrill.
In retrospect, I wish I had found a book that let me put money on Ohio State, because that was my original plan!
I think I have a spare flux capacitor hiding somewhere in my garage, let me go check and I'll get back to you McFly...
Hilarious looking at this in retrospect. The Gold Nugget didn't pick one of these games correctly. Hopefully they were correct about the UVA game.
We didn't cover in Pittsburgh, but yeah those other lines look funny now. 16 point favorites vs Boston college, give me a break
if you had bet against the Hokies on the spread the last three years, you'd be a rich(er) man
