Apparently Alabama had a hole in the nonconference schedule and offered to ODU to play them at Alabama in 2015.
ODU turned them down stating they were not ready for that level of play yet.
I'm pretty surprised Alabama came calling that fast. Program is in it's 5th year, IIRC.

I bet the folks at Alabama blinked audibly at being told No.
The guy at bleed blue does a good job at explaining why they are likely not going to play alabama. http://odubleedblue.com/report-odu-rejects-alabama-2015/
Makes absolute sense.
STAY OUT OF THE 757, SABAN! For that matter, stop recruiting the Commonwealth of Virginia!
ODU is exactly what Bama would want to schedule. They're a very new FBS team, and they probably wont be that good for a couple seasons until they get used to the talent gap. This way Bama can essentially schedule two FCS teams and not get hit with much negative press.
Alabama just wanted a whipping post, and figured a newbie program would be the perfect fit.
Fits the mold of a SEC pasty OOC game
Hey now, they need a break from that grueling conference schedule they have in which their bottom feeders can win any other conference without breaking a sweat.

It's like a self fulfilling prophecy.
Maybe they'll go after Appalachian State when they make the move to 1A (which should happen this coming season).
I feel like Nick Saban is jumping on this opportunity to play these teams way too fast. This 'hurry up' style just isn't working for me. I think we need a new rule in the game of college football.
