Not a fan of Edsall or UMd, but like his idea or at least part of it.
I've forgotten how to post a link, hope this works.

Sorry...ESPN...dnc
I like this.
Again, I like this. Scholarships should only be revoked for grades or off the field issues IMO. A school shouldn't threaten a player's scholarship b/c another a better prospect comes along.
I think some of this is good but I imagine trying to police the "no verbal offers" part of this would be really difficult.
I imagine people would do it all the time and only get caught a) if the kid is dumb and tweets it or b) they pull the verbal and the player makes a point to tell everyone since the school tried to take advantage of him
You're right but you could say the same thing about the NCAA's petty rules regarding more than $5 of extra food and the like. I think the primary issue is what the punishment would be for violating this rule would be. There are also dozens of issues from a football standpoint here, namely coaches banking on certain players fulfilling early offers and NOT recruiting other players. Edsall talks in the article as though everything is black and white and can be simplified down to essentially "admissions offices should be in charge of admissions." This could not be any further from the truth or else it'd be done already. This idea gives me the same feeling that I have about the NCAA, good on paper, terrible in practice.
tl;dr To quote the title, "I kind of agree but never see it happening."
I worked a summer camp for Edsall back in 2009 at UCONN. He rarley spoke to the coaches or the kids, but his assistants were pretty cool. They took us out for beer and pizza, and then we just sat around and drew up X's and O's on napkins all night. I wasnt impressed by him at all. His assistants said he micromanaged the shit out them and they had to send him schedules with every minute of their day planned out in great detail.
I'm not shocked in the least by this. The way he left UCONN and the way half his roster transferred when he got to Maryland, I have had less than a glowing respect for the guy (to put it very lightly).
Not that he gives a flying fuck what you or anyone else thinks.
Clearly not, but that won't stop me from wishing he would be forced to watch all three Star Wars prequels every single day.
Oh yeah. Def a capital douche-turd to be sure.
