Story Time: Fun with the uva rivalry

I wanted to open a forum on hate week for people to share stories or experiences about having fun with the uva rivalry. Part of what makes a rivalry is knowing so many people cheering for the bad guys.

I grew up in a family of Hokies, but our closest family friends were cavaliers. From about middle school on, I always wanted to mess with them when this game came around. The most memorable feats had to be these two:

1) One year I rode my bike over to their house the night before the game with a backpack full of a couple thousand forks. My friend and I forked a huge VT in their front yard. Due to a hill it was easily visible from the street but they could not see it from their house. They didn't see it until that afternoon and it stayed in their yard during the game.

2) Another year we were going over to their house to watch the game. Before we rang the doorbell, we hung our VT flag on their flagpole and took a picture of it hanging on their house. I then uploaded the photo to their home computer and made it the desktop background. The flag hung until they noticed it the next day, and they called us later that week to laugh about the computer.

Never did anything hateful, and it was all in good fun. They never got us back really (wahoos aren't really fun like that anyway). Living in Richmond, I have certainly met some uva "fans" I can't stand, but there are plenty of good people in the bunch (plenty may be an exaggeration). Of course, I still hate the school and charlottesville and their elitist attitude with all of my being.

So if you have any stories or experiences, share away.

I don't have a clever story. But I do remember this one time:
38-0

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

I have a 10 year old son. He has never lived in a world where UVA has beaten VT in football. I am proud of that and I'd like to keep it that way.

The Dude Abides

So how's your 15 year old doing? and may he die without ever living in that kind of world!

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

He's certainly had a great childhood of VT dominance.

Holy resurrected thread Batman!

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

I thought my account was hacked or something when this popped up

1995 VT @ UVA. I was 12 years old and went with my father and his crew. Tailgated in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, which was a go-to for Hokies back then. It was the best comeback that I can recall and one of the biggest wins for Beamer in the early years (though not as celebrated as the subsequent upset over Texas in the Sugar Bowl).

Growing up in Richmond, this is when the UVA people really did not think much of the Hokies and the football program. You would see much more UVA bumper stickers, shirts, hats, etc. in everyday life. This game is when this all started to change.

Most people remember the UVA coach dangling his leg out pretending to trip Antonio Banks on the interception for touchdown on the last play of the game, but most probably do not realize the backlash he/UVA caught for that. I remember heading back to Richmond and the trip was everywhere: ESPN, local sports TV, newspapers. I remember it being fairly harmless in person, but it was not received well by the sports world.

Couple of notes:
-Ill never forget the VT students rushing their field as game ended on the interception for TD.
-UVA team had a ton of talent and had a decent number of NFLers on that team.
-IMHO my favorite Hokie team. Players Druck, Brian Still, Oxendine, Torrian Gray, Antonio Banks, and Cornell Brown

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. I always love hearing about that game. I wish I'd been there, but I was only 5 at the time.

re: the Banks INT return, I also enjoy him throwing Tiki Barber aside like a ragdoll

So I was a sophomore in HS and the "rivalry" game was scheduled on homecoming night for my school. This was during the '99-'00 season (MV7). I wasn't really interested in my date at the time and while we were at dinner I kept excusing myself to go check on the score at the bar. Needless to say there was much vindication after 2 painstaking seasons of Al Clark ('97 & '98).

I know hindsight is 20/20, but I would have seriously questioned the date who wanted to go out to dinner during the VT/UVA game.... even if it is homecoming.

Meh, it was fucking HS. Looking back on it I wish my dad woulda snagged a pair o tix for the game. Would've blown it off without a second thought. Who knows, maybe in an alternate dimension/timeline I was actually at the game with my dad (even better with both of my grandfathers too). Oh yeah.

In that same alternate dimension is where Brewer throws 0 INT's and we win!

Nope. In that alternate timeline/dimension Tech held on to beat halFaSsU in the Sugar Bowl (which Warrick and Janikowski were suspended for), MV7 and Davis were not injured therefore held on to beat da U and repeated a victory against the Noles in the Orange bowl to secure their second National Championship, they defeated WVU in '03, knocked USC out of the #1 spot at FedEx field in '04 and defeated Aubrun in the Sugar bowl, defeated Miami at home and the Noles in the first ACC Championship game then proceeded to defeat Texas for their 3rd Natty Champ, Marcus Vick learned his lesson after '03 and '04 and was with the team through '06 managing to defeat Louisville in the Orange Bowl, Tech held on to defeat BC Thursday night at lane and once again in the ACC champ and proceeded to defeat Kansas in the Orange Bowl in '07, won the Orange Bowl again in '08 and in '09. Tech also managed to knock off Bama in '09 and in '13. Oh, instead of selecting Stinespring to replace Bustle Beamer opted to go with Kevin Rogers.

Oh, instead of selecting Stinespring to replace Bustle Beamer opted to go with Kevin Rogers.

Oh how I wish this were indeed the case...

So in 2009 or 2010 (can't remember but maybe dlux can) a V and cross sabers were painted onto the MV's practice field the week of the UVA game (many suspect the prank was actually the work of the HT's) but once discovered a group of MV's decided to repair the damage by putting a T right inside that V. Good times.

"Win or lose we'll greet you with a glad returning!"

Was it in retaliation for the T being painted on Scott Field?

No self respecting HT would stoop so low to disguise a prank with a V and scissors. V's belong with T's.

And as the Commonwealth Cup has taught us, more and more V's. As in Victories!

I figured as much, I think it was some UVA fans that were ignorant and thought it was a football practice field or something.

"Win or lose we'll greet you with a glad returning!"

Oh man, the memories. This one time, I think it was 2011, a bunch of my friends from band and I went up to Charlottesville for the game and we won 38-0. Great time

I liked that one, that was a good one. My last regular season game as an MV but you probably already knew that.

"Win or lose we'll greet you with a glad returning!"

This was the first game I ever attended! That's all I've got, but it's pretty good!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Ahhh. Just what I love to see. Uva losing again.

that was my first rivalry game also, how great it was to rush the field afterwards

WVIR's coverage would never be this balanced today. They're total wahoo shills. Although I highly recommend catching the sports report if Aileen Hnatiuk is on. She is very good at what she does (best sports reporter in Charlottesville). She is also HIGHLY qualified. Unfortunately, she's so good, she won't be here for very long.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

This was pretty awesome:

I grew up just outside of charlottesville and was a uva soccer fan until college. As such, I had a blue blazer, oxford shirt, and an orange and blue striped tie. All but a couple of my HS friends went to LOLUVa (get drunk every weekend AND have mommy do my laundry). So my junior year of college (2005 season), I got one of my friends who hated football to lend me his ID. Back then (still now?) at LOLUVa games, you just had to flash a student ticket and swipe your ID to get in the student section. No assigned seats. Guess that's what happens when there's so little demand to see the games... Anyway, I digress.
Another friend got me a student ticket and agreed to let me sit with her group. I painted my face orange and donned the blazer, shirt, and tie. I showed up at the gate at like 9am so we could be at the front of the line and get good seats. My friend's group kept asking her when her Tech friend was going to show up and watch the game with them. she was pretty cool about it and told them she didn't know when he'd show. As soon as they opened the gate, I swiped in and sprinted for the student section and laid across as many seats as I could. Probably the best tradition LOLUVa has (besides losing to tech).

Right before kick off, as everyone was yelling and getting ready to go, I stripped down to the waste to reveal a maroon torso and orange VT painted across my chest. the keys came out and I didn't stop cheering the whole game. Although it did get a little rough when we were up 24-0 at half time. They were really quiet and depressed. My friend's boyfriend was actually crying part way through the 4th quarter. It was a little cruel: LOLUVa scored almost immediately after half time and they had some hope only to watch as their team wouldn't even sniff the end zone until our 3rd string D was on the field.

final score: 52-14

I very much approve of the deception

"Win or lose we'll greet you with a glad returning!"

Snapped this pic from the South Endzone in 2006 after they finished 5-7, needing a win in Blacksburg to be bowl eligible. Had to dig it up again after tonight's win. I'll be home for Christmas

I was reminded of this gem when I saw UVA's coaching list...including WR coach Marques Hagans.

Hagans was QB at Hampton High when I was in high school at Culpeper. CCHS went undefeated in the regular season, and started barreling their way through the playoffs. But we had to go to Hampton for the semi-finals, and no one was giving us a chance. After all, Hampton was five time state champions at that point. Well, this game was on Thanksgiving weekend, and my mom was a Hampton grad, and we were visiting family in Hampton, so I was already down there. (I had to go anyway being in the band.)

The game ended up going into overtime. CCHS had first possession and kicked a FG. Hampton comes out and gets down to the 1 yard line on their first play, but then someone gets stupid and spikes the ball on one of our guys' heads. I can't remember if it was a pass and the receiver did it, or if Hagans had run himself and did it. Either way, they get backed up and have to go for a FG. Apparently the kicker was the coach's son, who had "transferred" that year to get on a winning team. Kick goes wide left, and we go to the finals (and win).

Fast forward three years, and my freshmen year at Tech (2002), and I see a familiar name on the UVA roster.

So yeah, Hagans couldn't beat any of my teams.
