Tenn track coach, Beth Alford-Sullivan, pulls an all-time scumbag move

Deadspin: Cuts 6 players 2 weeks into school year

Long story short... She just took over as head coach over the summer, and spent the time leading up to the fall semester patting herself on the back about how she was able to retain her recruiting class. 2 weeks into the school year, she calls in 6 players (3 of which incoming freshmen) and cut them from the team, effective immediately. All cut athletes are barred from their athletic and training facilities and scholarships have been stripped. If they decide to transfer to another school, they must sit out another year, per NCAA restrictions.

Per the article:

The athletes were immediately banned from using Tennessee facilities and equipment, and face another year out of competition if they attempt to transfer to a different SEC school. NCAA track recruiting is different from that in major sports; the number of scholarships available is usually less than the number of scholarship athletes, so many of those athletes are forced to pay a percentage of the out-of-state tuition from their own pockets. These scholarship restrictions also make it extremely difficult for athletes in so-called "equivalency" sports like track to transfer mid-year without paying the full cost of tuition at their new school.

I loathe UT. Good ole Rocky Top. Located in the center of the cesspool that is downtown Knoxville. Rocky Top Tennessee.

The ultimate stinker move. Hope those kids find something they can fall-back on. Tuition is getting expensive.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Those students are thinking about it.

Wow...

My cousin ran track at Tenn a few years ago, they had a pretty well known and respected coach. Did he move on to bigger things? Tenn is usually nationally competitive in Track.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

..But we should be paying basketball and football players. /sarc

When you first mentioned UTenn, my immediate thought was - 'What unethical, immoral, slimebag, knuckle dragging hick move have they done this time?'

You see, with Tennessee, it's always the same. Whether they're trying to teach their players how to walk & chew gum at the same time while giving them classroom credit for the ability, or any other number of things including cheating during basketball games - Hello Ernie! - it all blends into the same. UTenn is scum, and they always will completely lack ethics and morals and virtually every other redeeming quality in sports or humanity.

For gosh sakes, they can't even pick the right color of orange!

You would think that someone on the administration would stand up for what is right....this is sad and I am sure emotionally damaging to these young girls.
Its really sad that no one has the balls to stand up and do what is right...

Well, it is womens track, so I'm guessing no one has the balls.

There are words I want to call her which would surely bring the wrath of Joe and VTGuitarman down on me. I'll just go ahead and say that she's not a nice lady and leave it at that.

She's such a dick, right?

To put it mildly, yes.

Why is anyone surprised? She has a track record.

but really that totally blows. I find one of the comments from a former track athlete that alludes to this being common place when new coach comes in and has background in other areas that they want to concentrate in, and that not having enough scholarship money is usually to blame. Still blows and really an awful thing to do so new into the year.

The only silver lining is that they still get their scholarship money for this year. Completely unnecessary to ban them from athletic facilities. Basically sets back their potential college careers big time.
