Teel certainly does nail it. We will see what has come of CFB since historically his teams played for pride. That's what these guys are left playing for. BC is going to come in and follow Pitt's and Miami's game plan (more so Pitt as I expect a lot of Read Option).
One thing you can't deny after watching the game and reading the comments is Sam Rogers' heart. Kid doesn't stop.
Right now he's saying the things that need to be said and isn't sugar-coating anything... he's more deserving of being a coach on the team than a lot of the current coaches.
Teel hit the nail on the head with this article. Very well done.
BC could get ugly... attendance will surely be down, and they boast a brusing back and an athletic QB...
Part of the problem (as well as the promise) is all the youth. When a season turns like this you would hope the seniors would call a players meeting and stoke the pride and fire in this team, be leaders. Our seniors are on crutches or the second string, hard for them to really step up to plate. I think it has to be the coaches. Motivate the team and give them something to play for. In the NFL the contract is the motivation, in NCAAs its pride in your school and the chance to be a champion (and probably pro scouts). This team looked flat as soon as Miami scored.
The excuses we've heard for the last few years now are - young team, injuries, we're trying to improve, hard to compete with lesser talent, next year will be better...
Same excuses for quite a whole now.
Agree with you here. This team does lack leadership for sure. Willie Byrn and Sam Rogers both seem like capable leaders, along with Luther Maddy, which just proves your point about injuries. Not to mention Rogers is another young guy comparatively and Byrn hardly gets anything thrown his way any more. There's no Jack Tyler or Kyle Fuller on this team that just seems to live for leadership and saying all the right things, even in the tough times.
Lastly, I was disappointed to see this received a downvote. Again, nothing offensive just an opinion. Everyone's frustrated right now, no need to take this out on each other
I am just now really seeing what Beamer said in the postgame.
He's proud of this team? A team that was minutes away from getting shutout at home on Thursday Night? Proud of a team that allowed 2 RBs to combine for 401 yards of offense? Proud of an offense that gained 36 total yards in the first half?
Are you kidding me?
I thought the same thing...
I mean, I want to go into more detail about how I think of this attitude, but I find myself getting so frustrated that its difficult to not pepper my opinion with expletives.
There is a time and a place for the 'stay the course' mentality and being 4-4 after starting the year 2-0 having just got embarrassed on national television in your only home showcase game of the year during a game where the broadcasters were openly mocking the team and openly wondering what the hell we're doing out there is not the place for it. 1995 Frank Beamer would have been livid in the postgame, and there would have been words said on the bench. I miss fiery Frank Beamer, and the more time passes, I am realizing he will never return. He's too complacent with what he's already accomplished and is losing sight on the drive for success that got him to the high points that he attained.
Proud of last night? I don't know what else needs to be said. That right there encompasses all that is wrong with the modern day Frank Beamer.
+1000 legs for you
some people will say that it's just coach speak. it's what he has to say. maybe so but i'm with you that not everything needs to read from the Emily Post's manual of coach speak.
earlier this year, i got ripped to shreds on another VT site for jumping on a post game comment that beamer made. he said something to the extent of "i have to do a better job (or do more) of getting the players prepared". my comment was that i understand it's coach speak (beamer falling on the sword) but on the other hand, he's been doing this for 30 years and has been faced with just about every coaching scenario you can imagine and he is still trying to figure out on a week to week basis how to get his players prepared or how much effort to apply? I love the man but i agree that things are different.
Paterno, in the last decade, was well loved by the fans and hated by the press. He had this grandfatherly way of being cutesy in interviews, and laid the coach-speak on hard.
Reporters hated him. They couldn't get a real answer out of him. After he passed, all these stories started coming out about how hard he made it to cover his team, that he would tell you whatever he wanted to, regardless of your question, and how unlikable he was from the perspective of someone who had to write about him. Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post was his last in-depth interview, and he wasn't even square with her.
Beamer is going down the same path. I hope, pardon the expression, that he's a little more frank in his interviews in the future.
WOw, another embarrassing face plant on Thursday night national tv. I have been searching for something positive to say as not to seem too negative . Positives: 1- some talented young players, however ( talent is lacking at a lot of positions & depth is thin) 2- have beaten uva 10 yrs in row ( likely ending this yr.) 3- It looks like these coaches have ran a clean program ( in the scandal ridden ACC) 4- As these losses continue , fan support , attendance , revenue & donations will continue to decline & it will be harder for the apologist for this program and these coaches to make their case to keep them. This program is in a 4 yr or longer decline. Action needs to be taken.
As I listened to the post game interview my first thought was...Did I watch the same game as Beamer?
Actually I felt the same way during his half time interview.
The halftime interview was completely embarrassing. He couldnt form a complete sentence and went all out on talking about needing to run the football better. We were getting crushed and his mind was on running. I am aware that it actually seemed to be working in the second half if it wasnt for the fumbles but its a mindset that baffles me regardless. If I was a recruit watching that interview, I would have scratched VT from my list almost immediately.
this. I really have no idea what he is proud of? that the defense made miami go three and out on their opening possession? that we finally got into the endzone?? What occured last night that you can be proud of?? He needs to be pissed.
Article hits the nail on head. There is a difference in being apologetic, embarrassed, or befuddled and being in denial. FB seems to enjoy the latter.
I understand that he's not going to come out and completely bash his players or his coaching staff to the media and I honestly do not expect that from him. Not only is it not his style, but it can be divisive when the media is used. Additionally, I understand we (as fans) aren't supposed to take anything away from "pressers". I was proud of our second half effort too, but I would have been a lot more proud if we had actually shown up for the first half. Preparedness is something that falls squarely on the coaching staff. Continually we see what appears, to my novice eyes, to be a lack of preparation.
Maybe it's just me and I get tired of hearing the same rhetoric over and over without any follow through, "we've got some things to work on", "we're a good team", "we're gonna get this right", "I found a nickel on the sideline". I'm not arguing anyone should lose their job. I just want real talk.
I love Loeffler's comment "you cannot point fingers." He is right. This beatdown was a team effort. The players, the coaches, it was a team effort. Everybody failed to do their job. The reason you cannot point fingers is this game was so bad from a coaching and player execution standpoint, you almost have to point the finger at everyone.
It was a team effort. The coaches and players found a way to be humiliated. Let's not point fingers.
He also said frank was in denial. True?
Just remember, though.... These are still for sale on HokieSports....
The irony is that they are correct. The mission was completed and the rest of the season has shown that exact attitude.
When I saw those shirts the only thing I could think of was the JMU game in 2010. Their quarterback said it was the biggest victory in school history, and Head coach Mickey Matthews agreed. He went on to add "This is the biggest win of my professional career." Surprising, given that JMU had won the FCS national championship just a few years prior. When I heard that, I said that man is a terrible football coach. He might have won the big game, but he's got nothing left to say to his team to motivate them the rest of the year.
How did the rest of the season end up? Tyrod Taylor and that team pulled together to win out the regular season, including the ACC championship. But what about JMU? They went on to finish 6-5, and 3-5 in conference. They did not make the FCS playoffs that year. They hung their hat on that one big victory, and that was all they had to be proud of that year. FWIW, Mickey Matthews was fired a couple years later.
Look at us this year and look at what Ohio State has been doing since our game. We are JMU 2.0
Wow, this is one hell of a first post. Nicely done.
At what point do the fans deserve an apology? The way we packed Lane last night and had it rocking was amazing. The coaching staff asked us to come and we delivered. We consistently put our heart and soul into this team with undying loyalty and passion. It just seems like we deserve better than the product we saw on the field last night. It disappoints me that most likely nothing will change to make it better. They will just hope for better results.
Probably during the press conference when we are reimbursed for the 2000 BCA game against GT that was never played
I certainly understand where your frustrations and sentiments are coming from, but I feel like there is a disconnect between demanding an apology and claiming to have undying loyalty.
Never demanded one, nor did I even ask for one. The display last night was so incredibly sorry that I thought it might be a nice thing for Frank and Shane to do considering how much effort the fans put forth to support this team.
It was a complete lack of preparation. I saw some of our players the day before the game throwing a Frisbee around on the practice field. That is inexcusable. The coaching staff needs to get the players in the right mind set. We aren't nearly the best team in the Coastal but I believe that we should be better than the product that we have been putting on the field.
That's a pretty nice way of saying we are a last place team.... and that wouldn't be the case if we look like we had actually prepared for an opponent, as you pointed out.
I wish I could be in a presser with any of our coaches (maybe one of our credentialed contributors could do it) and say "prove it!" when they get the coach speak. For example:
- "We're going to get better." ...Prove it!
- "We're going to be more prepared." ...Prove it!
- "We're more talented than we're showing." ...Prove it!
- "It wasnt a pretty picture all night, but I saw some things we can start to build on." ...Prove it!
- "We're really going to be a good football team next year." ...Prove it!
