But, I think Virginia Tech is the better team here. Yes, the Hokies have lost two straight, but East Carolina is legit and Georgia Tech was an instance where I thought the Hokies simply gave the game away, despite controlling it from nearly the second quarter on. Running the ball will be key. Tech can't afford to get in a shootout with this team, especially with a thin roster of defensive tackles. That will take its toll in a game that goes up and down the field. But if the Hokies can do even a fraction of what they did last week and move the ball on the ground, it'll help keep the defense off the field and make the passing game more effective. Against UNC's defense, I think that's eminently possible.
I love the "Who Has the Edge" series every week. I hope you're right with your final analysis. I also wanted to point out that I don't think Tech has dropped two straight. Thanks for the great work you do, Andy. Let's go Hokies!

This is not a reply to you, McHokie, but a reply to the quote you're using....
I HATE it when people say "we can't afford to get intoa shootout with this team" because you're basically saying you think our defense is not good enough to stop them. I absolutely refuse to believe this defense is not capable of stopping an offense more times than not on the football field. ECU picked on a hurt corner for their points, and GT was gift wrapped points by our offense. We have some really good players in our defense, and its kind of insulting to them and Bud Foster to suggest that if we don't methodically hold onto the ball, the game is lost because our defense won't be able to get off the field.
Sorry, I'm just not buying it. I have faith that our offense can put up a bunch of points on these guys and I have faith our defense can keep them out of the end zone. If we have the ability to hang 50 points on someone, do it.

Do you have faith in a defense that currently has only THREE defensive tackles? It's not the defensive quality that's concerning, it's the depth. Late in the game, our defense wouldn't be able to get off the field because they would be too tired. So no, we can't get into a shootout. On offense, we haven't shown the ability to make it to the redzone consistently nor have we had many explosive plays. Only 20 times have we been inside the redzone. That's 4 times a game. That's not enough to instill any sort of confidence that we can put up 40+ points if we have to.

Yes, this. I don't worry about our defense, I think they'll be able to hold a team more often than not. But even if we stop UNC a good chunk of the time, does our offense have what it takes to keep up with them? If we throw 2 picks this game, then we waste two drives and give UNC more opportunities to take advantage of the "not" part of "more often than not". I trust the D, not the O

Yea...when I read "don't get in a shootout" I read that as our offense won't be able to hold pace. And from everything we've seen this year, heck, most years in the past decade, our offense doesn't generally put up much over 4 TDs.

Oops. I meant real competition (Power 5 or a good mid-major like ECU, if that's what you call them). I've fixed it.
