It's a good move for Smart, a good move for Texas and a good move for Buzz. Smart had done all he was going to do at VCU and they have funding issues which meant he was at his cap. Texas gets a great coach who specializes in what Texas has always been able to bring in in abundance: long athletes. Havoc, Austin style could be very effective.

And it's a good move for Buzz. He has a good core of players at VT, an administration that will allow him to grow and a chance to build us into a competitor. The next step is we need to see a dramatic upswing in fan (read: student) involvement. I hope that Buzz+Whit attack this issue with a vengeance this offseason.

What funding issues? They just built a 25 million dollar basketball training faclity, they upgraded and added seats to Siegal center and upped the salaries of the assistants and benefits to be players.

I'm not up on the details, but the State Legislature is about to (or already has?) passed a bill to cap student athletic fees. This is said to hit VCU more than the other schools.

My friends/family at VCU had always told me that Smart loved VCU and Richmond, and I had always thought if he was going to leave it'd be closer to his home state. But having visited Austin, if you're somebody that loves Richmond, I'd say you'd definitely love Austin. Great city, one of my favorites. He should win a lot there.

Smart move

Onward and upward

Richmond hasn't been this devastated since 1865.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Trust me, it's been brutal but thoroughly enjoyable.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

PBR sales have gone through the roof since the announcement.

Hipsters drowning in their sorrows.

And hipsters in Austin are celebrating.

everyone buy stock in PBR!

Hipsters are into PBR? Funny how that goes. In my day, the only people drinking PBR were bikers and rugby players. Reason being, nobody had to worry about anyone else cadging their beer. YUK is about the best I can muster, but I'll try to choke one down this weekend in solidarity with getting Smart outta our hair.

you may find it interesting that PBR has a joint venture with a group here in China and they have a "version" of PBR that is marketed as a luxury beer and costs about $40 a bottle. So no wonder hipsters are drinking it.

I do find that interesting, indeed.

Holy S---!! Did that really happen? I'm sure its a test pilot with no passengers onboard, but man that's close to the ground. Wow!

Gotta be a clever fake. No way he could physically pull that off at such a low altitude.

"Exit light..."

and he wasn't going that fast either..relatively speaking...

Onward and upward

It did not.

While the 747 theoretically could perform a aileron roll and come out unscathed, it has never happened. The only time in recorded history that I am aware of that this happened was the first public flight of the Dash-80 (the actual jet parked at the Udvar-Hazy Center and precursor to the 707) when the test pilot went and did the maneuver without permission from Boeing to impress potential buyers.

Edit: Updated to include a better video.

To his credit, it worked, and the jet age was born. Note that I said aileron roll instead of barrel roll, as the Dash-80 rotated on an axis at the tip of its wing instead of the fuselage, due the the aerodynamic components of the wing design that basically mean you have to treat the plane as a giant centrifuge to maintain lift. Had this maneuver been attempted at the altitude of this video, the plane would have slammed into the ground.

But I think he was high; wouldn't you have to be!

I am guessing based of this stomach wrenching video the new Boeing 787-9 could do it with easy.

I am pretty sure any modern day airliner could pull off an aileron roll with relative ease. But the makers aren't really going to do it, because the last thing they want to show the buying public is their plane upside-down before it goes into service, when there are already more than enough irrational fears about flying as it is.

Where you run into trouble with these aircraft is when they get inverted for any length of time. These planes are not meant nor designed for inverted flight, and you are in for a world of trouble if it ever happens. As long as you continue the roll, you should be fine. I think the only commercial jet that could pull off inverted flight for any duration was the Concorde, which supposedly did it in training flights, but nobody caught it on video.

You can have these "facts" but I'm pretty sure I did it in Microsoft flight simulator once

When I worked as a reservation agent at UAL in the early 90's, it was long rumored that a Cathay Pacific 747 flying empty on a transfer flight accomplished an unintentional loop over the Pacific during a severe thunderstorm. Supposedly, the aircraft got caught in a severe updraft that forced the nose to nearly vertical, and the pilot elected to pull the nose over rather than fight to push it back down. The aircraft survived the maneuver, but sustained significant structural damage. Not sure if it is a true story, maybe there's an aerospace engineer out there that can confirm/deny the event. As a pilot myself, I don't doubt that a 747 could survive the maneuver, but I wonder about whether a complete loop was accomplished, or maybe something a little less stressful since pulling out of the bottom of a loop results in some strong g-forces. Not sure what the 747 g-limits are, but a full loop would almost surely exceed them by a bunch. Boeing builds some strong stuff though.

When this discussion got me interested in the topic, I came across a mention on another message board that an A300-600 had unintentionally rolled past 180 degrees with passengers onboard because of an "inflight reverser deployment" and that it rolled the rest of the way to correct to level flight. The poster didn't include any source info and I wasn't able to find anything else (closest I found was a Korean Air flight that rolled to the left after takeoff at Jakarta, but it didn't specify how much it rolled) confirming it though. Here's the message board topic that it was mentioned on.

There was a plane in this video?

I guess Austin's hipster culture really just is better than Richmond's... I don't have too much sympathy, especially after how arrogant the "Havoc" types were getting; it was getting to the point where they were totally marginalizing what Beamer has done for VT Football.

Meh they can marginalize all they want, the fact is (and Shaka's move just cemented it) that VCU will always be the little brother of the state without a football program. Their fans will always have Napoleon syndrome and at this point I just laugh at them.

This. I'm so glad I won't have to hear about him around Richmond anymore.

I'm sure VCU will continue to be among the better mid-majors (they already were good before Smart took over as HC, where he actually had a worse winning percentage than Anthony Grant) it'll just go back to being a basketball team instead of a brand.

you're kidding right? they will be talking about him more than ever now.

But not for long.

In the moment, you're definitely right (local news has been dominated by #Shakawatch) but once basketball season starts they'll probably move on. If they can continue to maintain the success they've had starting with Capel and through Grant and Smart I don't expect to hear much about him.

They've got SXSW among other things, and are the home of Rooster Teeth productions (the guys that make Red vs. Blue). It's like little Hollywood over there. And I hear all the time about the "river walk".
And MrsEMC's grandma lives out towards El Paso, calls the Austin people "bunch of hippies".

Not to be a dick but VCU currently has 2 top 100 commits that were offered by VT before they signed with the Rams (one of them is from Richmond)...and with Adam Smith transferring, we have an open scholarship slot...I know we need big men right now but considering how awful we were this year, there are no sacred cows in our basketball program:

There's a difference between awful and young. UVa football is awful. We were just young. It would be nice to have either of those 2 guys listed, but really, its a SG and SF. More than anything right now we need size, and I'm not sure either of these 2 really help us in that dept.

Both simultaneously, and they're still much worse than that.

As awful as they were, it was a last drive score, and a last minute defensive stand to pull out a victory, and if it had been reversed it would have been them bowling not VT, so the current difference isn't as large as you would hope.

That's what the 'hoos I know have hung their hat on since that game. Me, I prefer to remember that even banged up inordinately, too young by necessity, backs against the wall, we were the tougher team, the team with more heart, the team with the W...again. The mark of the better team is how they perform in the face of adversity. My hopes are just fine, thank you very much.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

More than anything right now we need size, and I'm not sure either of these 2 really help us in that dept.

We need talented players right now more than anything else...I get that we're young and we'll be better next year and yada yada yada...I know 247 rankings aren't always right but Mack and Williams are both very highly regarded players who could make an immediate impact on almost every team in the nation (with the exception of the Kentucky's of the world)...I don't think there is a big out there that could make an impact as freshman like Mack and Williams could

We have a lot of talented players. We have more pure shooters on this team than I can remember VT having in a long while, and most of those guys are capable of taking on almost any defender 1 on 1 while playing good defense at the other end. What we are missing are a couple quality big men down low to protect the rim and not allow our team to get overwhelmed in a size dominated ACC. Pierce is a good player and will be great for us when his offensive game clicks, but we need more than just him. With a legitimately good backup to take over when he got into foul trouble, we are a much different team for the better last year. More than anything, this needs to be addressed.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I agree with that 100%, but I think it would be nice if Pierce was the backup next year while he is developing. I'd like to add a big guy who can start right away.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I fully expect a couple more of our wings to transfer down the road... shit happens, you don't know what's going to happen in terms of injuries and guys leaving the program...I think when you have players that talented on the market, if they demonstrate interest with VT, you sign them no questions asked and figure out fit later

The only big man we're chasing right now is Levi Cook. I don't seem him making the same impact as Mack and Williams would right away...of course I'm an idiot so take my opinion with a grain of salt haha
