sorry for the lateness of the warning but the VA beach area is looking at about 8 or 9 inches of snow this weekend, its goin ta be UUUUUUUUUUUUGLY. anywho be sure to stock up on milk and toilet paper, ironically further west we're looking at not that much. Maybe 3-4 inches and northern Virginia not getting jack.
as for North Carolina you're looking at about 4-5" in most regions with heavy snow coming up around virginia beach. I really don't think its going to be that big of a deal because I'm more of a euro guy myself but there is evidence that it could be a doozy. The national weather service likes to add about an inch or two to every one of my forecasts so I would definitely expect something.
GOOD NEWS IS the storm this weekend seems to have completely petered out so you only have to buy toilet paper once this week!

Sorry to those of you who are getting Jack. He's a bastard.
I always had heard he was an ass.
It was fun the first time around, getting a nice lazy day off from work, but I think most of us in the Hampton Roads area have had our fill. Especially with how bad traffic gets. If we ever need to evacuate after a light snow dusting, we're all boned.
It took my bro two and a half hours to get from Norfolk to va beach last night. People around here are insane
I think it's a combination of terrible traffic patterns, lack of experience, and the occasional dude in a truck that doesn't realize he can still slide with 4WD on.
Having moved from Virginia Beach to New Hampshire in the past six months, I absolutely agree. I grew up in northern VA and actually saw 4" or 5" storms at least once a year. In 3 years of living in VB, I think I saw 3" once (and people freaked out). Drivers in Hampton Roads just have no clue how to handle snowy roads.
Up here in the granite state, we've gotten 6 feet in the last two months and haven't gone one week this February without at least having a 2" "dusting" roll through. These people are pros in the snow...but it's all about perspective, I suppose.
I was hoping Richmond would miss out on this one, but I woke up to a Winter Storm Watch.
Is this related to the 1-3 inches of snow Blacksburg is supposed to get tonight, or is that a completely different shindig?
pretty sure it's all the same storm system, but I defer to the experts
Same system, most of the moisture is wrapping up further east though
Also just realized I said this weekend....i meant tonight/tomorrow, I've been sending out tons of emails these last few days and just misspoke I believe anyway trust your weathermen they know what they're doing MY MISTAKE
Related: Due to the impending apocalypse, Christopher Newport University decided to start spring break two days early and cancel classes tomorrow and Friday.
Starting spring break early because of a snow storm just seems wrong.
Reporting in from Northern VA, Jack arrived and he left/is current leaving us a present.
School has been closed so much the past weeks I was dying to go to work yesterday just to sample beer in progress and talk to an adult.
Christiansburg got 4-5" from midnight to 6AM. I was out at 6AM shoveling to get vehicles out safely and ease my wife's day (we aren't quite used to this yet having just moved from Florida). Now I'm off at work after shoveling everything. Not so bad. I need to share a picture, but little time, its really nice out IMO. We've gotten about 15-17" over these past 3 storms (last week and change).
eshiben: Any more storms on the horizon or are we almost out of this pattern?
Not quite out of the pattern yet, it all depends on when the jet decides to stop being a real @-hole and move up a little bit. I'm going up to wisconsin over the break so I'm right there with you guys hoping it'll warm up soon
What part of Wisconsin?
Madison, I'm heading up yonder for graduate school! gravity waves and jank
Oh nice. I go to Milwaukee at least once a year for work so I was going to offer some places to go, but I got nothing for Madison.
well next time you're in Milwuakee shoot me a message on here and we can grab a beer. I think its only like an hour or so from Madison
Sounds good, I think the next trip is May/June timeframe.
Won't start up there till September but I could be up there for a bit I'm shooting for a PhD
Woop woop! TKP: becoming the most highly-educated fan site in FBS football, on and off the field.
This is exactly how I feel. As for the women of TKP, don't feel left out. In the eternal words of JayZ, ladies is pimps too, go on and brush your shoulders off.
Hey man, I really appreciate your updates and look to your forecasts moreso than some of my local outlets because you were right a few times this season when the weren't.
2 things:
Well I appreciate the approval! As for weather models I really like the euro, it updates more often and gives a lot more real time forecasts where as the GEM (Canadian model) and a few other bigguns only go once every 6 hours. The euro does however has its weaknesses. It can be a little over zealous with precipitation forecasts but as far as big events go I think its second to none.
I get my data from eurowx for a subscription but you can find a not quite as good version online for free all over the place I'll dig up a few other links for you too. The models can be wrong however and that's where a human element comes in, you need to keep an eye on soundings and stuff like that, and if you want the nitty gritty science stuff I'd be more than happy to walk you through that. Go to Plymouth.edu (maybe .com I can't remember its a favourite tab on mine) and just look around for soundings on their meteorology page. Those things are the answer to everything as far as I'm concerned.
As for the near future I see us maybe getting some rain Monday before what looks like could be an event next wed night through Thursday. Again that's a long ways out so let's see if the models hold up through the weekend
No problem man thanks again. I have limited experience with wx from my experience as a student/private pilot. I've always wanted to get a little more in depth in forecasting and whatnot.
Yea I'd appreciate that. Thanks for the info I guess we'll have to keep in eye out for later next week. While I am somewhat done with the snow, I love the stuff and am secretly just as excited as my daughter for the big events. It's funny how getting older completely sours the snow experience.
A ton of meteorologists go into piloting! Great field and it really is funny the older I get the grouchier I get about it. I do love forecasting it though I seem to do pretty well at it. But man actually slipping and falling on my bum sucks so hard
haha I agree. I actually almost did the same tonight but I didn't want to look childish in front of my child. I managed to force myself back to solid footing without reenacting Charlotte Takes a Tumble:
Haha that was basically me Friday morning. I ate it so hard and I have s bruise on my leg to prove it. Thank god I don't have kids yet
