Joe Schad: Gene Chizik to UNC as Defensive Coordinator

Was this expected? The thought hadn't occurred to me.

Good hire, I hate it for them.

I honestly have no idea if this is good or bad for us.

Probably neither. New coaches are far more often not a panacea for what ails a program than they are. Just look at UNC head coaching history since Mack Brown left in '97...

He was a good DC at Auburn and Texas.

I totally forgot about his past as a coordinator since the debacle at Auburn. Tuberville went undefeated and Texas won the MNC when he was coordinating their defenses. If can turn out a defense or two like those at UNC, they'll be trouble.

He had a lot more talent on those defenses then the ones UNC will field though.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Assuming, of course, his arrival doesn't ignite a surge in defensive recruiting. Took Venables a while to get going at Clemson, too.

I mean, their defense can only get better right?

A penguin at DC would make them better. And Chiz is probably better than a penguin.

Penguin >anything else at least that's what my 3 year old is telling me.

This 3-year old of yours will make a fine defensive coordinator someday.

I'd also like to note, he is already academically eligible to play sports at UNC.

It's already the right shade of blue.

I mean he knows how to slow down the Loeffler offense, having do e such an excellent job of doing so as his boss in 2012.

I see those egos meshing well together much like PJ and Groh's did.

That might get a little awkward pregame while coaches are milling about on the field.

Gene Chizik: Hey Scot
Scot Loeffler: Oh, hey Gene
GC: How's it been going
SL: Oh, pretty ok I guess. You?
GC: Did a little TV, happy to be coaching again. Where's Jeff?
SL: He took a job at LSU.
GC: Well good for him.
SL: Oh (pause)
GC: Oh (pause) well I better get back to our players.
SL: yeah

Chizik is a good name hire, but so was Koenning. They run a base 4-2-5. Lets look at their interior defensive recruiting:

Until they have a head coach who has any interest what so ever in recruiting additional Defensive personnel in lieu of say keeping 6 QBs on the roster, then things won't change. The issue with UNCs defense wasn't scheme or the Coordinator, it was the lack of talent and the lack of the Head Coach giving damn about that side of the ball. Fedora's philosophy is clearly he thinks he can outscore people to win and he doesn't care if the defense makes stops or not. I think that attitude has transferred over to the defensive players, and you saw it with lack of communication, tackling and fundamentals on that side of the ball. I don't think a new DC is going to change that.
