Watching David Wang against stunts...

Let me tell you all... watching every sack from last season to prep my pass protection column is rough. This is a labor of love folks.

ya know what? the more we can talk about how crappy our line was (in retrospect), the more excited I get for the anOSU game. Nowhere to go but up, right? no? ok, I'll just go back into my happy place now...

Watching David Wang against stunts"

Well at least the adult movie with this title took home the "Best Picture". Talk about sacks...

So you're saying I should re-stock my whiskey supply prior to your analysis?

It might come in handy.

Oh god

Dammit...no bourbon in Africa

Sounds like a business opportunity.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

The secret is Duty Free, my friend. Been enjoying some Knob Creek recently.

The duty free is 4 hours away in Dar Es Salaam, and apparently extremely over priced. Apparently you can find Bourbon for sale in Dar though, so I will have to check next time I go.

The saving grace is that scotch is really cheap here. Like maybe $ 10-15 a bottle. Most expensive bottle I have seen was $30. I mean there's no Lagavulin, or anything, but still.

I am sure there is some crazy ancient tribal secret recipe liquor you have found that can really knock your socks off...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Yes and it probably contains some local herbs and mushrooms. Pull that out when we are 0-0 with Wake again.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Wait... waaaaiiiit... pull what out?

In TZ that is Konyagi. It is like, a worse version of gin. Apparently drinking a lot of it makes you go blind, or so I have heard.

What are: things Mike London would say.

Sorry, I don't see it because "Time Cop" London can't say that at his spring game.

Yeah, if anything he knows the fan by name.

And by "fan," you mean the guy forced to work the hot dog stand where no one buys anything.

"Exit light..."

I mean the actual fan that cools the team off during practice. I think they named him "Coolio".

"Exit light..."

Even without much returning experience I feel better about this year's line than last. I think it's just the fact that these guys have had two years of solid coaching and have been able to build some cohesiveness.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I'm going to summarize the forthcoming article right now:

a stunted Wang affects your sack (total)

I'm guessing this has been used a million times on TKP, but not since I've been here. I'm going to act like it hasn't happened.

It's been used before but no worries. Feel free.... not that I personally would use that particular gif after my post.

Sorry, couldn't help myself hehe.

I foresee these in my future

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I know this gif is supposed to highlight Teller going all beast mode, but all I see when I watch it is wang twinkle toeing around and letting coleman get tackled. I mean, come on, HE RUNS BETWEEN THE TWO GUYS WHO MAKE THE TACKLE and he just brushes up against one of them.

I hope you don't mind that I use this gif as my main source of optimism for 2015.

What's Important Now

That juxtaposition of feelings and thoughts was not overlooked in the selection of this gif. At least we won that game.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

To be fair, the guy he was aiming for got taken out by Teller.

Sure. And then Teller took him out again while Wang watched.

What's Important Now

So you're saying you want your OL taking cheap shots at a guy on the ground? Teller's at least moving in that direction and on his way down himself. If Wang hits that guy, we're all blasting him for giving up a cheap 15. Go ahead and lament his physical and mental mistakes all you want (collective "you" there, btw), but I have a hard time questioning the toughness or want-to of a guy who played through so much for the good of the team. Dude had to snap with his left arm at one point cause his right wasn't working. Still played. Yeah, that guy just doesn't want to hit anyone.

You've clearly got a personal attachment to the guy, and I'm going to respect that and not needle you.

Just know that the rest of us also watched his performance over the 12 years he was in Blacksburg, and our opinions do not come with a lack of evidence.

What's Important Now

I've never seen or spoken to him in any way outside of yelling at him through my TV. My attachment to him comes from watching him play through stuff that I know for a fact hurts like hell. Prior to 2013, he didn't play with a mean streak. None of our line did. That's why we sucked. But since Grimes came, he embraced the new mentality wholeheartedly from game 1. That coupled with his willingness to play hurt is what earned my respect, and the reason why I think anyone who questions his want-to is simply incorrect. He was undersized and obviously made mistakes, and he's not exactly the manimal that Teller is (few are), but he gave it everything he had the past 2 years.

Yep... Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Wang went out of his way to avoid contact on that play. Bad.... awful....

We have guys double pancaking defenders and twinkle toes over there is sidestepping anyone in blue.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

You're right. The guy who gave up his body and played through injuries his entire career at VT decided he just didn't want to hit anybody.

How many players does he block in that play?

How many players did he have a chance to block on that play?

Exactly

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

He's looking inside to seal the LB and give JC space outside. He misses the safety, but that's just because of where he's looking, not because he "doesn't want to hit anybody." Not his fault Teller got there first and planted the guy.

He whiffed on 3 blocks, 2 of which ended up making the tackle. He sidestepped them to reach the LB, who was already pancaked by the time he got there.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

So why not blame that on Bucky whose man is the one who made the tackle to bring Coleman to the ground? Or Wade who perhaps left his assignment to get tied up on the outside, 1 yard beyond the line of scrimmage rather than block the guy who made initial contact with JC? You don't know the blocking assignments or the play call. You only know that to you, it looks like Wang isn't doing his job, when in actuality, he very well could have been.

Yep, and as French pointed out, there are plenty of other mistakes to choose from. It looks like his job on this play is to get up the field and make sure no one gets JC from the inside. As far as I can tell, he did that perfectly, up until Bucky fell off his block (if Wang had hit that guy it would've been a 15 yard penalty, btw) and Teller did a Teller thing.

yes, it is unfortunate for him that this play has been memorialized in GIF form. We can see the whole field and hindsight is always 20/20 (better than that from the stands). That being said, it's painful. I just want to see a different outcome. It doesn't even matter how the game ended. This play is on loop in front of my eyes. I want to see him take out the corner or the safety (who, in my opinion, is clear enough from Bucky to be hit without penalty and it kind of looks like Teller is the one who clips him, not wang anyway). Or go all WWE and just clothesline both of them. Anyway, it's not fair, but things always look worse when isolated and and analyzed (ever pause a blu-ray when someone's face is in focus? It's guaranteed to make the hottest actress look awful).

That being said, French has to watch the film for every sack. I'd say he has the perspective to pass a little judgement. The rest of us will just make fun of gifs.

Could be worse, he could be blocking a Teller a la Florida.

I think the mind was willing, but the flesh... the flesh was weak. My column is going to be about setting protection, which is the center's responsibility. I watched every sack in the Wake, Miami, BC, and Pitt games. Every sack except for 2 was either an error in setting the protection (the topic I will cover) or David Wang not picking up his man on a simple X stunt. I respect his effort and sacrifice, but he wasn't a good player.

The other two:
1) McLaughlin getting burned with a pure speed rush off the edge on a seven step drop passing play against Miami.
2) Conte vs Malachai Moore of BC. Not good Bob.

Wang vs Boston College = absolutely dreadful.

Well, really hoping all the praise Searels was heaping on Gallo was well-earned this spring.

*Ahem* French, did you catch that bit about Gallo and analyzing his performance?

.....so what you're sayin is that our opponents will be going to the Gallo's Pole this fall?....

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I would give you a bonus leg due to the fact that these two songs are on the same album. For some reason I just love that fact.

"Exit light..."

Ahem, not to be that guy, but....

Ramble on is from LZ2, not LZ3.

I may lose some Friends for pointing this out, but I know it will be a Celebration Day when VT does a Bron-Y-Aur Stomp on anOSU, and we all realize That's The Way our season will play out in the ACCCG.

Was the Miami sack the Chikillo one? Certainly felt like McGlock struggled more with him that night than what shows up on the stat sheet.

BC returns Moore, Kavalec, Connor Wujciak, and Steven Daniels. While I think they'll take a huge step back as a team this year, that front 7 and a slowed down tempo should keep them in a lot of games.

I got mixed up. The McLaughlin speed rush sack was against Pitt. OLB came off the edge. Brewer had a deep drop and the Pitt OLB went right around McLaughlin like he was a road cone.

The good thing is, soon we'll have en entire offensive line that wasn't tainted by the coaching of Newsome.

I'm looking forward to your analysis.

Particularly the part where you point out how things are likely to be better this year, and why.

Not sure he'll be able to say why things could/would be better this year other than to say it can't get worse. We're going to be counting on a true sophomore with less than 100 total snaps and have no seemingly capable backups at the position.

Yea, well, that's not what I want to hear.

So try again.

The entire point of this post is an answer to your question: A VT OL who's Wang is no longer stunted will be better for it's sack (total)

I mean, come on. It's right there people.

We had such high hopes after the older wang performed so well. Was the younger wang smaller? Was it endurance? Couldn't fill gaps as well?

The staying power of the Bigger Wang was not there with the Smaller Wang unfortunately...

What's Important Now

I recalled Wang getting beat time and time again but I thought it was just me. (See what I did there?) It will be interesting to see if this year the protection is much improved with better line calls from Gallo, who from what the coaches have said, is as smart as they come.
