What ever happened to Drew Harris?

I saw mention of him in Andy Bitter's article on Running Back depth.

I googled and found out he played at ASA Jr College for a year and then had signed a letter of intent to UMASS.
So, I searched the UMASS roster and he wasn't on it.

href="http://247sports.com/Article/UMass-Rounds-Out-2014-Class-29063763" target="_blank">http://247sports.com/Article/UMass-Rounds-Out-2014-Class-29063763

"Recruited heavily out of high school in 2012 by the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Georgia and others, he is one of most highly-touted recruits – if not the most highly-touted – to ever come to UMass.

At 6-foot-1, 230 pounds and with the requisite speed and athleticism that comes with being a 4-star prospect, Harris is someone fans can get excited about. He's classified as a sophomore and will be in the conversation to start at running back from day one."

Then this:

Then I found this:

Looks like he joined UMASS in July 2014 and was gone by mid-August 2014. No sign of him since....

Here's an example of why we need to get to kids earlier in life, and not just those kids who play sports. He did choose the right school, you got to give him that. If he had made it to Tech, he might have been a contender. Wish him the best in whatever he does.

with all the good RBs on VT's roster and more coming in the summer, I have long moved on from Drew.

What is he like 30 now?? I kid I kid....Sad that he didn't pan out in a time when we really needed a workhorse running back. Him not getting here really hurt us in the that department. However, since he's not at another school tearing it up and it's been a few years, I'm not too sad about it. Hope he finds what he's looking for and on that note.....maybe he's right there with U2......

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

No way man. You need to read more about his situation. I wish he found another school and was tearing it up. Harris was phucked over by his high school and the NCAA clearinghouse. Total bullshit that derailed what may have been a great career.

Sadly he spent so much time and effort trying to work through the bullshit that he probably didn't have the heart for football anymore.

I remembered the last time we all talked about this, you or someone else was talking about how he really had a tough road to hoe because of some admin bull crap with the clearinghouse and his high school.

Glad you brought that back up. I think all in all it was a really unfortunate situation.

I thought the admin bullshit was requesting the wrong paperwork and transcripts and then trying to fix it all in the 11th hour?

That whole situation seemed to me to be miscommunication and bad handling of paperwork between all parties involved and trying to fix everything last minute. He didn't qualify academically the first time, barely did after going to Fork Union, then went to a JUCO. It probably also didn't help that he reopened his recruitment every 5 minutes.

It seemed like all the pinging around got the whole mess more complex than most transfers and things needed to be stayed on top of more than usual which wasn't done.

from his dad:

his son took an applied geometry class at Downingtown East that ended up not being an accredited course. He was short of the core credits needed for graduation.

The Harrises were encouraged by college-level advisers to have Harris Jr. take online courses through The Keystone School to make up for the unaccredited course. The online course would help him get a qualifying grade-point average that matched his SAT score on the NCAA's sliding scale, according to Harris Sr., who added his son's graduation date was pushed back to summer 2012.

Harris Jr. enrolled at FUMA, only to find out after he'd started classes that the online courses he took couldn't be accepted. Since he didn't graduate from high school with all of his core courses, none of the courses he took at FUMA counted on his transcript, which was flagged.

"It's a big tragedy," said Harris Sr., who had a kidney removed as a result of cancer in his son's junior year at Downingtown East, and then had his gall bladder removed about a year later. "It's kind of hard for an institution to admit that they're wrong. Nobody wants to admit that they're wrong when it comes to this.

"I'm not bad-mouthing the NCAA at all. I've already been through the horror stories. They have their rules and regulations on how they do stuff. They may be consistent, and they may be inconsistent. I'm not here to judge that. I'm just here to do what I need to do to get my son to where he wants to be."

They have been given bad advice after bad advice and have been trying to make up for it and keep getting caught. The NCAA clearinghouse and it's dumbassery helps no one.

Article is here: http://articles.dailypress.com/2013-05-08/sports/dp-spt-tech-drew-harris...

it also speculates on VT's interest waning when FSU offered and he took notice of it. But in terms of his academic issues it really bothers me. I am all for kids needing to reach a certain level academically to play, but I hate that the clearinghouse has arbitrary timelines for making it's decisions that hurt kids trying to understand what to do. I hate that kids can't use the NCAA as a resource to verify what they should be doing will work, rather than only getting after the fact judgments. The Harris' made some bad decisions and they are to blame for those decisions but in the end the one that gets hurt is a young kid trying to get a leg up.

Anyway, all the best to him.

Ah, that might have been one of them I was thinking of. It was just the general thread was that the clearinghouse was mostly to blame. He basically ran into the academic clusterfuck anyone who transfers schools a lot does which was probably compounded because he might not have been able to test out of anything.

But they made a lot of bad decisions and they have to face the consequences. Sure the kid gets hurt a little but it's not really that much different than if I had terrible grades in High School and had to go to a community college for a few years and botched my final transcripts. The only difference between his situation and many others' is that he would have played football.

Nope. Believe me.... the only fucking over he received was from his "parents". I know personally that he never completed many of his courses in high school. I doubt he did after either, given his upbringing.

So you're saying he would have been better suited at UNC?

similar to what I heard. something about his dad thinking he knew better than what the VT coaches had been telling him in regards to him qualifying.

wow, that would suck. Never read anything about that, but either way I hope he finally finds success wherever he ends up

February..'96...the steak: ribeye, the whiskey:Lagavulin 16, the lady next to me: a bit**.....

I'm saying I'm one of them.

Out of curiosity, how were the GRE's? I almost took them before it came to my attention that ODU prefers the GMAT.

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

In my experience, not bad at all. Helps to be a good test-taker, but as long as you cram for a few weeks prior to taking them you should be fine. I took them at the end of winter break last year and it worked perfectly for me.

So easy. I had to take them for PSU Engineering, did well in all respects. Writing section was easy with a simple lookup online of what a top scoring paper looked like compared to the others. Math wasn't hard at all, no calculus from what I recall, but geometry. I'm not a math genius my any stretch but scored in the mid-90s percentile. So you had to be proficient in 8th/9th grade math at least. Reading was pretty fundamental, but I no speak no good English and PSU didn't care at all, I realized why when I walked into class and saw my whole class was pretty much Chinese. Side note, the department didn't even require the writing section so I could have saved myself the effort.

Dude, wait.

You took the GRE for Engineering grad school and there was no calculus?

Wait, what?

The GREs are just the post-college SATs. They aren't overly challenging as long as you study up and have a basic understanding of math and the English language. The vocab is more advanced, but the math is all stuff most should have learned in high school and maybe early college.

The hardest part about the math section for me was just recalling some of the geometric identities that I used to know like the back of my hand. I hadn't taken a math class in years, and I admit I focused more on vocab for GRE prep (because there's nothing you can do but memorize) as math is my stronger point. Did well enough.

"Exit light..."

I also focused more on the vocab. I'm pretty sure in the 6 weeks of prep that I did, 5 weeks and 4 days were just doing vocab and practice reading comprehension exams. The last 3 days were reviewing those math identities you are talking about.

GRE subject tests are not always required. The GRE general test is not nearly as hard as the subject tests and requires only high school-level math.

"Exit light..."

My suspicions have been confirmed. Reading through everyones comments, it definitely seems like the GRE is easier than the GMAT, like I expected.

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

Yeah, that's kind of what I was surprised about. I thought a graduate engineering program would have at least required the math subject test. But it's been 10 years since I even looked at engineering grad school.

Wait, what?

I dislike standardized testing in general (won't go on a rant about that), but I think the applicant's transcript is a much better indicator of the applicant's abilities than a single test in a high-pressure, time-limited situation. So the generally low use of subject tests is understandable. A lot of times, applicants will voluntarily take them to try to boost their profile. I'd much rather hear about an applicant's research experience in chemistry over the course of an undergraduate career than a single number on the chemistry subject test.

"Exit light..."

Those tests are a giant racket, although the SATs have merit for out of state applicants due to the wide variety or rigor in high schools. I also think a lot of schools are starting to realize that and how the tests are just a way to make College Board oodles of money for an almost worthless service. I'm sure they might help for someone who hasn't been in academia for years, but fresh out of college with a degree? The transcript, school, and interview should give the program all they need to know if they want the person or not.

My mom made me take a few subject tests for Tech because they appealed to her paranoia of me not getting in, which was unfounded, and in the end it didn't matter to anyone I applied to and just cost my parents hundreds of dollars.

Preach. I agree about the SATs; the applicant pool at that level is much larger and there are disparities. The GRE is just foolish, to me, for exactly the reasons you've stated.

"Exit light..."

The SAT II's (which were around) actually did have some effect. I was able to place out of 1st semester english b/c my grades were decent and I took the SAT II Writing (now a part of the SAT). The joke is, I scored in the 42nd percentile and they still let me skip it. I write good now though.

Not that I recall. If there was, it was probably something simple, like elementary chain rule or something, nothing to cause anyone any level of stress. I did stress out about it quite a bit before taking it, though, but as it turns out, stress was unwarranted.

apparently along with his brother

I usually prefer Miami of Ohio over Indiana University of Pennsylvania....but California University of Pennsylvania is my favorite.

Considering Miami University existed prior to the city in Florida being named or settled, and even before Fl became a state, I'd say its name isn't that odd. Interestingly enough, with were taken from local Indian tribe names although different tribes.

Miami of Ohio is not the name, it's Miami University and I agree with Osu78 that the name is appropriate and not odd. The University of Miami in Florida came second.
