They also were quoting sources that it's inevitable we're going to be in a situation where there will be more openings than qualified candidates available, and some schools are going to drown in the process. Would not be shocked to see schools like UVA stick with their coaches another year knowing they are too far down the totem pole to get anyone good.
Purdue already made that call by saying they are keeping their coach.
I think this is already starting to happen. Just a few weeks ago, the pundits all seemed convinced that Hazell at Purdue was a dead man walking. Then, last week, they announced that he'll be back next year. I suspect that Minnesota's decision to promote their interim HC to full-time, rather than conducting a more thorough search process, was probably influenced by this as well.

would not be surprised if UVA thought exactly the opposite of that and tried to hire a new coach "while the pickin's good"
I'm not convinced that UVA knows they are towards the bottom of the totem poll. I think they just really don't care that much.

The upheaval at Mizzou, from the top administration on down, does not make that a desirable job.
that's a good point. Rocky situation down there at the moment. It might be several years before they get their feet back under them, unfortunately. I hope for their case that things get better sooner rather than later but realistically they're probably not in a position to snag a top notch coach this off-season.
I think we are a better job, I just wanted to see how much their move to the SEC may have bumped them up the list. To me, even without the recent upheaval, its a crappy job because they have a tough road to the playoffs as they will most likely meet a powerhouse in the conf game, the state isn't prolific in recruiting, and their major markets (STL and KC) are all about their pro teams, not to mention the lovely travel to all their not-so-close conference games. The positive is they are surrounded by nobodies until you reach OK and anOSU.
Yeah, that's the thing with the SEC. Many assume that being in the conference just auto-upgrades everything. Sure, they've got the best teams (Bama, LSU most years) but their middle and bottom teams are not necessarily any better than any other conference. Mizzou is getting a nice slice of the SEC revenue, so they can probably use that for facility upgrades, recruiting, etc. but they really are in a bad spot geographically and no longstanding football tradition that I know of.
if a coach wants to coach in the SEC USCe and Mizzou would be great jobs because of the relative ease of the SEC East Division. They have a pretty good shot at getting to the SEC championship game and, if they can manage to get there unscathed (not impossible to do in the SEC East), but lose they could still have an outside shot at the playoff berth. The SEC is the only league in the country where people will legitimately consider a non-champion team for a playoff spot. Imagine if Mizzou went undefeated this year (they don't play Bama, LSU, or Ole Miss) and ended up playing Bama in the SEC Championship game. If they lose, Bama and Mizzou would be the only 1-loss teams the playoff committee would seriously consider. Given how difficult it is to win 12(13) games in CFB there won't be many teams with a better record than a 12-1 Mizzou which lost it's only game to a 12-1 Bama.
The East being the weak division is a pretty new development. Right now, it looks like Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee could all be elite or borderline in the next few years. Thrown in Kentucky who has been getting better and better, and I don't think it's safe to assume the East will be very weak long-term.
Exactly. Florida is trending upward. Georgia has an elite QB coming in the next class and gets Chubb back next year. Tennessee has looked good they just cant put it together. I can cook up a feasible situation where the East could end up being better than the West. It would probably be wrong, but you could make the argument.

USCe fans probably aren't happy either. The 11 win seasons with Spurrier and beating Bama that one year spoiled their fanbase's expectations as a program.

I recently had a Twitter battle with a USCe fan about how VT is better, and goes deeper, since we have been relevant for longer. Guy just didn't get it. Said I was lying and wouldn't believe all the facts I shared with him. It was like talking to the wall.
Unfortunately what sportwriters think -- and their desire to "rank" things -- means little to actual coaches looking at jobs. In reality, they could be ranked 1, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e...depending upon what a coach is looking for.
I really doubt the coaches that are interested in the VT job would rank living in the cesspool that is LA over Blacksburg.
You may not like LA but it would be nearly impossible to make an argument that the VT job ranks over the USC job.
I think he's trying to say the type of person who would want the VT job would also be the type of person who wouldn't want to live in LA. And I'd have to agree with him...

Probably right, but who knows. I know that I wouldn't necessarily like to live in LA (and there's plenty of other places I'd rather not live) but if I were offered a dream job...

I live in LA. It's a pretty okay place to live if your roots aren't tied to a specific location. Weather is amazing. Great areas. Beach. Mountains. You name it. But, I grew up in a small town in SWVA. It's different. If I could choose any where to live, it'd be in back in mountains, but if your roots aren't tied to SWVA, Los Angeles vs Blacksburg is a no brainer.

So, on a related note, I'm watching the 30 for 30 "Trojan War" on the Pete Carroll USC dynasty on Netflix. At the beginning, they are talking about the period in 2000 right before Pete Carroll was hired and how USC had become irrelevant, and the football powers were now in the South and Midwest. During that part, they show footage of Miami, Oklahoma, Florida, and VT. We definitely are thought of as a football power on the national scale.
Also, those dark maroon 90s/early 2000s uniforms with orange sleeve numbers look absolutely amazing.
