For the past ten years, part of our annual pilgrimage to attend a game has been to stay at The Hotel Roanoke. Since the team stays there the night before its home games, it adds to the sense of excitement to see the buses roll in, and to see the coaches and players filing in as we cheer them on.
Some years, there have been only a handful of us waiting at the bottom of the lower stairs as the players grab their Chick-fil-a snack before heading to their rooms. The past few years more have caught on, and it is especially fun to watch the kids with jerseys and footballs waiting for autographs. The players can be seen milling around in the lobby and hallways afterwards. They are always so polite and patient and seem even a little unsure of all the adoration that they are receiving. Now, I can't look around the hotel without seeing Willie Byrn sitting in the lobby talking to his parents, or the smile on Darren Evan's face when he talked about his son, or Jarrett Boykin telling us that his dream was to play for Carolina with Cam Newton. Here's where I first met Dadi Nicolas in the lobby, where I shared an elevator with Cordarrow "Taco" Thompson, where my sister stands grinning between Sam Rogers and his roommate Braxton Pfaff.
Overlay with this buzz of activity that the Hotel Roanoke always has other events/visitors underway. One year, we arrived just as Wayne Newton and his Dancing With the Stars partner were coming out to step into a limo. Another year, a fundraiser had women in pajamas meandering the halls before country singer Joe Nicols topped off the evening. We caught him in the lobby just after we conversed with Mark Warner following his debate downtown with Jim Gilmore for his first senate race. We made sure to thank Gov. Warner for advocating for the Hokies to enter the ACC, and I must say that unlike many politicians, he looked you straight in the eye the whole time we talked to him rather than glance around to catch up with someone more politically expedient. Invariably, there is a bridal party or two traipsing through the lobby.
This year, we came for the NC State game. The night before was a Thursday, and The Hotel Roanoke had a whole different vibe. Three very low key business meetings were being held in the hotel. The team came early, so there was no grand entrance. Not knowing that, I stood in the lobby as the players dribbled by after their position meetings. The first person I saw was Isaiah Ford, smiling and looking relaxed for a guy who was about to score three td's the next day. In fact, all of the players looked relaxed and ready to play. Bud, on the other hand, looked like he wanted to take someone's head off...as it should be. My sister even presented Coach Beamer with some honey that an elderly client who knew Beamer's mother had sent along to him.
Our entourage has grown to the point that I now splurge and reserve the two-bedroom Governor's Suite at the top of the hotel. For the NC State game, we stayed in a smaller room on Thursday, saving the larger suite for Friday and Saturday nights. We tried to switch over before leaving for the game on Friday, but were told that the Thursday occupant was slow to leave. We heard that Wynton Marsalis had had a concert in Roanoke on Thursday, so naturally we assumed that it was he who was staying there. Only when we returned from the game did we find out that Beamer had evidently been in the suite. How did we know? My brother prefers to watch the game from the hotel and so was tasked with the switchover. Coach Beamer accidentally left his playbook in the suite. Before my brother could stash it away, housekeeping came running in to retrieve it.
On Friday, my sister and I will be back at The Hotel Roanoke at the bottom of the stairs holding a "Thank You" banner and cheering for Coach Beamer and our team. We will see our friend Art there. The only reason that we know Art and his wife Dot is that we are kindred Hokies who happen to keep staying at The Hotel Roanoke for the same games. They live in Louisiana, and we now coordinate our game schedules every year.
I am pretty sure that the hotel will see fit to upgrade Beamer again on Friday. Hopefully, this time he will remember his playbook. So much to remember! So many memories!

Uhhhh, who?
Was it an ad for SquareSpace?
Cause that's what I have on my screen.
I mean Macy's.
I mean Jos A Bank.
I mean Cabela's.
Dammit, refresh!
$9.99 to read the rest of the story.
Guys he saw Deez
I was sure this was going to be another Metallica sighting thread.
Waiting for op to finish the post:

After finishing the post:
OP leading us on and making us think we were getting some big scoop:
O well.
OP should be a writer.
In all seriousness though thanks for the post.
EDIT its fixed. Cool story. Definitely an interesting perspective.
Sorry about the initial post that abruptly ended halfway through. I was trying to insert a picture that I took of Isaiah Ford in the lobby, but failed miserably, and instead ended up posting the forum topic before it was finished. If I can figure out how to edit and add in the picture, you may see it appear.....
My friends and I may have accidentally crashed a wedding reception at Hotel Roanoke one night
tldr
Very nice story. Thanks for posting! (I can not explain the earlier creepy posts to your story. Sorry about that).
The story ended prior to him editing it. I mean just dropped off a cliff.
Wait so you are a grown ass man sharing a hotel room with your grown sister.?
As long as they're not sharing the bed, there's no issue.
It is a cool feel to stay there the night before the game.
That Governors sweet is great. Went to a party there for a friend before she deployed. What a great space and view from the top.
I think the only thing that is better is if you are able to stay at the team hotel before the bowl game.
Sorry, guys. I am a grown ass woman. Feel better?
Yes, especially if there are pictures! ;)
is it just me, or are things startin' to get a little weird in here?
Truth of Life #44.27
does it make me a bad person that I read in your profile "I went to W&M and UVA/Darden..." and immediately thought, "I bet this is one of the few women on TKP?"
does it make me a bad person that I read in
yourher profile"I went to W&M and UVA/Darden..."under cake or pie that the answer was "ice cream" and immediately thought, "I bet this is one of the few women on TKP?"as a guy and member of team ice cream (extenuating circumstances), I am offended by this...
as you should be...
Not unless you hold it against me that I went to Darden. My husband who has his master's in IEOR from Tech cannot understand why I don't root for UVa. I grew up in a Hokie household, and I will always be a Tech fan.
By the way, I think that more women than you may think read TKP. We're just not as good at posting. I can't contribute to the X's and O's discussions, but I love to come here to learn from y'all who do as well as read all the fun, silly comments.
Ice cream, on the other hand, is a very serious topic.....
"I remember back when I was the only woman on TKP... something something you kids get off my damn lawn"
And red velvet cake > all
Don't say you're not as good at posting. I made a joke above about crashing a wedding, but I really enjoyed reading your post
IEOR, eh? That dates him. I think they changed the major in the early 1990s.

Hokie women unite!!!
Another grown ass woman here! So there's what, five of us? I'd add a smiley face but it may lead to down votes.
Me, too! And, I'll post the smiley... :-)
When do the players usually arrive? We live in Roaonke, and it would be fun to join in.
Usually about 8 pm or a little before. Come join us. The more, the merrier! I 'll be wearing a TKP Sacksburg t-shirt.
One more thing that I forgot to share from the night before the NC State game. Because I live in Massachusetts, and they don't exactly interview a lot of Tech players up here, I study the media guide for player faces so that I can try to recognize as many as possible as they stream into the hotel. I don't always get it right. Big ol' Wade Hansen came through the lobby, and I meekly asked him: "Are you Joey Slye?" He laughed, and grinning said, "No, Joey is my Mini-Me!"
That's a good one. Joey's a big dude, but imagining Wade as our kicker is pretty funny. Props to you for doing your research though and trying to learn what the players look like. To be honest, outside of the big names on the team, I wouldn't recognize many of our players without their jerseys on.
Thank you for this post. Now we have our own tale from the Hotel Roanoke. Best night of his life. ;)
