After losing last night Texas is going to start getting a lot of rumors.
Houston and Navy play today at noon on ABC. If Navy wins, Tom Herman would be available immediately. Will definitely be watching that one.
Listening to Navy feed on XM. Already said "Fuentes could be VT coach by next week," when discussing Memphis.
I recommend adding Fuente to your dictionary to avoid autocorrect making it Fuentes.
I definitely like Fuente, but I just don't think it's a very Whit-like move. Has been too much smoke around Fuente, and really no verified information other than speculation. Might just be a smokescreen. Nothing would surprise me at this point, though. I hope it's Herman. Our roster is tailor-made for him to come in and win.
Disagree, it would be a Whit move. It means he went out and got his man as soon as he knew he had to make a move. Beamer announced his retirement 3 weeks ago largely to allow the coaching search to get started early, and if you start reading into these sources, they're saying that's pretty much when Fuente got locked for us, which means Whit went out and got his guy before the rest of the football world could act. They had to keep it under wraps for a few weeks to let the remainder of the season play out, and of course, that allowed the time for the leaks to start. This is the same as what happened with Buzz, but we had to wait to do anything until JJ was fired, and by then, we had the ability to announce the hire immediately, as both ours and Marquette's seasons were over.
I just can't read much into these "sources" at this point. It may be Fuente, but I don't think anyone honestly knows. I've heard Chad Morris was a lock, Fuente, Richt, smoke about Mullen, Fedora, RichRod, etc. I've read some smoke that the Forde Fuente-to-VT scoop was because he turned down another school earlier this week, possibly Mizzou. Herman is the one guy that, while our fans have openly speculated, there hasn't been much in the way of media connecting him to VT. Could be a very great job by Whit of keeping things under wraps, or maybe Herman just isn't interested in VT. But I can't think we wouldn't have pursued him pretty hard. I don't buy that this thing has been a done deal for a month or more like some. Whit's too smart to not perform his due diligence and pursue all of the best candidates fully.
The difference I think is that the smoke on Fuente is coming from. . .
Dan Wolken - USA Today
Pat Forde - Yahoo Sports
CoachingSearch.com / Footballscoop.com
None of the other names are coming from reputable sources as far as I know.
Well yeah, all of the coaching news has been speculation as that is all it could be at this point. No one knows but WB and his choice at this point if one has even been made.
Nice
Using Google Pages to showcase data in table forms...
WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT...GENIUS
Thank you so much for consolidating everything like this. This is super helpful!
Love this format- thanks for sharing!
Is Tulsa official yet?
Bud foster needs to be on VTs big board as well.
It makes me sad that I did not put him in the top 4. This coming from one of the biggest Bud Foster supporters there is. Such a strange thing to be such a foregone conclusion that it isn't happening.
If you believe some of the rumors circling right now, Dan Mullen is in the mix along with Al Golden should Mike London be fired.
Don't buy Mullen. It isn't impossible if UVA decides that they want to be a football school again, but I will believe it when they start acting like it. Golden would seem like a better fit. Already has his tie ready as well.
I mean are you doing this objectively or subjectively?
Just because you don't personally agree with the rumor doesn't mean it doesn't merit being listed. Same as Chip Kelly with Miami. There have been a few reputable sources saying they've had preliminary discussions, and if he gets fired in Philly, he'll likely end up at USCw or Miami.
I don't know that you can be objective or subjective in these kind of coaching searches. It's all to much of a confusing mess. My attempt is to wait until there is some kind of reasonable legs behind the rumors. With the exception of Chip Kelly every one of the people on my board have been spoken of by a source that has been correct multiple times in the past.
Also London hasn't even been fired yet. Once that happens I will consider everything more realistic.
AL Golden to UVA is like music to my ears
What? He has a 3-2 record with an overall 149-118 scoring differential against VT. So, I guess you want to share the commonwealth cup at a near 50-50 rate?
That is our own coaching failures. Look at what he did against everyone else with teams loaded in talent. He did enough to get fired. Perfect fit for UVA
To be fair, I would say the Dan Mullen reports feel very 'Larry Fedora to Tech' to me, theyve come out of left field, there really isnt much merit to them and their timing feels a bit odd...
and to be honest, there are just as many legitimate rumors that London is not going anywhere as there are sports writers dictating their choices for "possible replacements"...
If Navy wins today, I think it makes Bud our only candidate who can beat the triple option. Food for thought.
After next year, VT may never face the triple option again.
Barry Odom is a name to keep an eye on in coaching searches. Justin Fuente's previous DC before moving to Missouri. Has done an excellent job and a hot name to take the next step. He has been connected to the Missouri job as well as the Memphis job. If both schools go a different direction he would be an incredible get if the worst happens and we lose Foster.
I think LSU is talking to many of the same targets we are. They want an OC just like us. Literally... a run oriented spread who wants QBs to throw the ball in space.
Jimbo has some issues with FSU program. Yes he may want to jet, but he will bring the ire of feminists, religious types etc with him. He also doesn't have a system as much as he had an immoral POS QB who just so happens can really play. Caught lightning in a bottle.
You gotta believe FSU is having conversations as well. Same with Mullen's soon to be ex. Kinda believe Mullen ends up at MD. Absurd that UVA thinks they are in the mix there. MD punching above their weight class due to UA.
Love this idea. Would like to see it ranked by attractiveness... USCw, LSU, FSU, VT, etc.
We seem to be very complacent. If you showed by attractiveness and by who is actually aggressively talking because they will soon need a new coach... we are much further down the list than if you just show who has announced. This is why Whit gets the big bucks. Navigating this mess ain't gonna be easy. Your picture doesn't show that at all and I think is very misleading, insular (imagine that at VT).
Put Foster on there.... he is a very viable option when combined with a guy like Applewhite, etc, etc.
Where does the notion that UMD has multi millions to pay a head coach from? This is the school that cut sports because of money that left a conference they helped start because of money.
They bolted to the B1G because of the B1G Network money. IIRC they settled with the ACC and didn't have to pay additional money, now they're getting much bigger VT revenue.
Yet they still haven't brought back the sports they cut because of budget problems and are still not selling out tickets even with all those BIG alums in the DC area buying tickets. I don't see Maryland spending 4.5 million on a football head coach.
Well, I never said that the UMD administration would do things that make sense...
Post Edited to add Bud Foster because we know he has had or will get an interview. I do not think he will be the coach. (Not because he does not deserve it)
Tom
Herman
I won't believe anything until it happens, but I do enjoy the fact that no one named Rich is on our big board. Just hope it stays that way.
Woah, Rob Ryan? Weird.
Via Coachingsearch.com
Rob Ryan would certainly add some sizzle to Tulane's football program. It's been stagnant since Tommy Bowden and Rich Rodriguez left in the late 90s.
So...other than Bud to Illinois, there doesn't seem to be any overlap with our prime candidates (according to "sources"). Seems like all Whit has to do is pick a favorite, find the $$, and convince them we have greener grass.
The dominoes that could start falling when LSU fires Les Miles could send this whole thing on it's head though. I'm cool with being out of the coach searching business when that happens.
Just read at Bleacher Report that Les Miles is coaching his last game tomorrow. LSU is officially on the market
Updated Saturday at 10:00 AM
Hawaii hired Nick Rolovich
North Texas narrowing down choices
Matt Campbell strong candidate at Missouri
Mike Sanford Jr. is probably the front runner at UVA as well.
Looks like that may be true. Certainly makes more real life sense than the Dan Mullen pipe dream.
I really like him. I hear him weekly on SiriusXM and he sounds the part of a head coach.
I would include Herman on USCe. I know it was said he was out there, but many think that might be subterfuge and that he already has an agreement there.
Took him off based on the Forde article citing multiple sources that he has withdrawn his name from consideration. If he did all of that to remove a distraction from Houston then thats something I guess but I just don't get the feeling thats whats happening here. As always no one really knows what they are talking about (Including me).
Sources: Houston's Tom Herman no longer a candidate to coach South Carolina
Edited 1:00 PM
Illinois hired Interim coach Bill Cubit
Removed FSU and Jimbo Fisher from potential opening as he told president he has no intention of leaving.
Eliminates the job that Bud Foster was connected to. Looking more likely that Foster could be back next year.
Excellent news, I hope it pans out
Illinois AD with a strong vote of confidence in his coach...
Mr. Kowalczyk could use some discourse with a PR specialist.
So, it's (1) not ideal and (2) not synonymous to a dagger in the heart. Thus, could be a dagger to the gut or maybe the neck. Perhaps it's a quadriplegic amputation or a complete loss of brain function. The options are so many, but at least its less than a dagger to the heart.
Matt Cambell rumored to be headed to Iowa State, that will then open up the Toledo job.
#Sauces
MARK RICHT FIRED
Schlabach is reporting this, so I have a feeling this might have legs.
Edit: Fixed Should show up now
Having trouble updating the image but the live board is updated.
Rutgers just fired Head football coach AND the AD.
Pretty happy to not be involved in this mess. Thanks Whit!
FWIW:
THIS. OFFSEASON. IS. AWESOME.
#EnFuente, I don't care if it isn't right
Campbell to IowaSt, no one cares, same with Illinois
Richt out, looking for UGA to make a SMART move.
Miles staying, LSU administration is a dumpster fire
The carousel is in full rotation!
UCF hires Dino Babers
That report is now being called into question.
Id throw Richt up there with loluva, they pursued him once before. I assume it would be his job to turn down based on the current situation in charlottesville.
I would actually be very worried if they hired him
This is my worst nightmare
Interesting take on Richt, with mention of the UVA job:
https://www.dawgnation.com/football/team-news/richt-unlikely-to-jump-at-...
USC names Clay Helton the head coach.
Looks like Herman is staying put. Coaches are getting scarce.
http://espn.go.com/ncf/story/_/id/14259740/tom-herman-says-agreement-sta...
This means we landed the best up and coming coach available. A coach who didn't even field other offers once ours came across his desk.
I hope this helps our fanbase understand where we fall in the national picture. We aren't nearly as small time as many would lead you to believe.
I think this means that Houston is looking to get into the Big12, and the Big12 may be interested in having them.
Yeah, maybe. But Herman also has a good gig, it's not SMU or Memphis. Houston has been relevant for a long time now. If they want to pay him $3M and he can may NY6 bowls, he can wait on Texas, aTm, LSU, PSU, Clemson, FSU, Nebraska, UCLA or Oregon to open up.
FWIW Seems like UGA is most likely going to hire Smart soon
https://www.seccountry.com/alabama/report-alabama-dc-kirby-smart-is-ugas-only-choice
Yep, they hired him.
It's funny having gone through this now and occasitionally looking at UVA rumors...any time you see "blank is very interested in the job" it seems more than likely just an agent throwing their name out, "Rich Rod very interested in (insert school)" "Kirby smart interested in blank" "Dan Mullen interested in blank" the ones who didn't have any of that fluff seem legit ones to move/stay. Fuente/Herman. It sounds like Herman was very close to accepting the South Carolina job, the other ones just sound like their trying to get a raise.
Starting to sound like Whit, used his channels (he's good friends with Cronin, the head coach of Cinci, who happens to have the same agent as Fuente) to let them know our interest before Frank made his retirement official, and it sounds like Fuente's agent knew this would be the job he would take. No sense in floating his name out there if he already had his mind made up.
Table needs some updates. USC hired Helton. Toledo's now looking, after their coach took the Iowa State job. Minnesota should probably be added for the sake of completeness. And didn't I read yesterday that Memphis hired Mizzou's DC, or was that just a rumor that has not yet been confirmed?
Scott Frost to UCF.
Beat me to it..
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/ucf-knights/os-oregon-scott-frost-new-ucf-coach-20151201-story.html
phew. thats a huge get for UCF, I was scared Syracuse or Maryland would get him and we'd have to recruit against him in our own backyard or play against him at Syracuse, hell be this years Fuente/Herman in 2-3 years or less at UCF.
Wow, nice pull for UCF. I thought UMD would get him.
Their fans still think they are holding out for Chip Kelly
Updated Monday December 1st - 9:00 AM
Might want to keep that North Texas spot open a little longer.
Dan Wolken seems confident that Barry Odom will get the Memphis job.
Don't know his connections, but this is also the guy that (I think) first "confirmed" the Fuente hire.
I heard that Mark Richt had interviewed at Miami and had an interview at loluva set up.
Obviously, they're easily impressed.
Dont look now, but if this coaching Carousel pans out, ACC will be really good in the VERY near future:
Jimbo Fisher - FSU
Dabo Swinney - Clemson
Larry Fedora - UNC
David Cutcliffe - Duke
Justin Fuente - VT
Steve Addazio - BC
Bobby Petrino - Louisville
Paul Johnson - GT
Dave Doeren - NC State
Pat Narduzzi - Pitt
Dave Clawson - Wake
UVA - Mike Sanford Jr/ Mark Richt/Al Golden/Matt Rhule
Syracuse- Dino Babers/Mike Bloomgren
Miami - Butch Davis/Geoge Schiano/Mark Richt/Dan Mullen
Depending on those three hires, whos the worst on that list? Clawson? Johnson? Thats becoming a pretty stacked list of Head Coaches.
Damn that's a stacked list. At this point, you gotta say that Clawson and Doeren are the worst purely looking at it from a production standpoint, although Petrino hasn't exactly set the world on fire in his return.
UVA should grab Golden or Mack Brown, and Miami should go Schiano. Who even cares what Syracuse does, if we aren't talking basketball, they're just turf-eaters.
I guess you missed it, but LSU decided to retain Les Miles after all.
eh, I could pick about 3-4 of those coaches who I could easily see leaving to another/better job in the near future
Al Golden would fit right in at UVA with his tie wearing on the sideline.
It's already (well, almost) the right color.
Yep- not much of a wardrobe shock for the Golden household if that happens.
There's this
"Sources: Richt to be Named Head Coach at Miami, Pruitt and Former UGA QB Commit Jacob Eason to Follow"
http://www.foxsports.com.c66b.clonezone.link/richt_canes
Eason news is huge, if true.
If true, at least it keeps him out of the Mid-Atlantic; that needs to belong to US!
Looks like things in the ACC Coastal might be getting interesting. I'll still have a visceral hatred for Miami, but I do think Richt is a good guy. Guess the whole "Pruitt took a swing at Richt and he's a cancer to the program" might have been a bit overblown.
Yeah, he's almost too good for da U culture
It's a fake report. Feldman appears to have no idea it was even written.
I know he played there but Richt just seems like an odd fit for Miami in my opinionEdit: Just realized it was a fake after clicking it, nice one haha
"Soon-to-be-former University of Georgia football coach Mark Richt will interview for the vacant head coaching position at the University of Virginia, ESPN reported Tuesday.
U.Va. insiders believe Richt, 154-51 in 15 seasons in Athens, could visit Charlottesville as early as late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. Such a timetable would permit him to meet with Cavaliers men's basketball coach Tony Bennett, whose team plays Tuesday night at Ohio State.
ESPN's Mark Schlabach, citing a source, was the first to report that Richt would interview with Virginia.
...
Internet reports posted Tuesday afternoon say Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr., widely regarded as a top candidate for the Virginia job, is telling recruits he has no plans to leave the Fighting Irish."
RTD in this article http://www.richmond.com/sports/college/football/article_aa4445a1-ecd5-52...
Glad that Sanford will stay at ND but very scared about the Richt interview, especially if he meets with Bennett. Let's pray that the Canes get him.
Honestly I'm ok with him going to any school he wants.
I'm not, Richt is a very good coach, a great recruiter and an admirable guy. He was my #1 choice for VT.
Yet when the SC East was at its worst he couldn't win it.
Still won 9+ games a season during most of his career there, as well as coach very successful players who have gone on to the NFL
9 wins at UGA with the recruits that walk in that door is the floor.
The national outcry when UGA fired Richt is probably a pretty good sign that smart football people disagree with you.
personally, I thought it was time for UGA to fire Richt, but that isn't representative of my opinion on Richt. I believe coaches should be moved on more often than not (LSU made a mistake by not firing Miles). But Richt is a good coach and will make someone much better. At UVA or Miami, Richt makes them a contender for our division immediately (maybe takes a year for UVA).
Just because I don't think he makes LOLUVA and Miami national contenders doesn't mean I don't think he is a good coach and should have been retained at UGA. Richt is a very good coach but to attach some mythical instant winner label to him doesn't fit what he has done. It's not debatable that his talent level at UGA was too yet Missouri won the SEC East outright more than he did the last what 10 years?
Thats strange because...
Year Eastern Division Champion(s)
2005 Georgia
2006 Florida
2007 Tennessee*, Georgia
2008 Florida
2009 Florida
2010 South Carolina
2011 Georgia
2012 Georgia*
2013 Missouri
2014 Missouri
2015 Florida
I counted differently.
They were tied in the East most of those years thus why I said
I think it will be interesting to see how Richt does wherever he ends up. I think he's a terrific character guy. I believe his recruiting prowess is somewhat skewed by the fact he coached at Georgia. Similarly to Smart, I think Richt's reputation as a recruiter benefits more from the program than anything else. Georgia had incredible recruiting classes during all of Richts tenure and yet they struggled mightily to even win their division. Everyone always says "But, they're in the all powerful and omnipotent SEC!!". Well the SEC West is the best division in football. No doubt. The SEC East, however, is not the gauntlet that the rest of the conference is. Richt winning 9+ games a year in the SEC East with the ridiculous amount of talent he has is not extremely impressive to me. It proves that he's a good coach but I don't think he's as great as everyone here seems to think he is. I'll be curious to see if he can prove me wrong somewhere. I'm honestly not too concerned about him taking the job at either Miami or UVA. I think we'd still beat them more often than not.
I will say, though, that if Richt ends up at UVA our streak will be in serious jeopardy. What I'm not worried about is that UVA would start a streak of their own. I think Fuente/Foster would win at least every other game vs Richt.
I bet Littelpage is not afraid to open up the wallet for Richt, either. I could very much see the UVA big donors being anxious for a big name coach, and I'm sure a coach like Mark Richt would have the full support (financial) to make a big deal happen.
Athens to Charlottesville is not much of a culture shock for his family. Athens to College Park would be.
What does Bennett have to do with their football search?
Oddly, the concern over Richt in 2000 and now is that he is too religious for Charlottesville. Bennett has been hired since then, to much acclaim, and is a very religious dude. I believe that UVA wants to put any concerns with Richt to rest that his faith won't be out of place in C'ville.
That's ironic because London is also a very religious guy. He started the Fellowship for Christian Athletes chapter at UVA and the football chaplain hosts a lot of Bible studies and spiritual events for the players.
Apparently Kirby Smart to Georgia is a done deal.
Looking like a for sure thing.
I really should bookmark my predictions.
Per 24/7, Shane Beamer has been contacted for the South Carolina job
http://southcarolina.247sports.com/Bolt/The-case-for-Shane-Beamer-at-Sou...
He's probably their backup plan. Fedora makes too much sense for them right now. I still think there is a chance that USC'e ends up with Bobby Petrino. He knows how to win in the SEC and USC needs to take a risk. That would open up Brohm to L'ville. I'm surprised Brohm isn't getting more play, powerful offense and he's got WKU in the the top 25.
He knows how to win in the SEC
Yes he does!
He knows how to win the young assistants, anyway.
Apparently, that's how it's done in Arkansas, as demonstrated by other powerful people who got their career starts there.
Really good write up on Shane. I like him and would hate to lose him, but I wouldn't be upset at all to see him get his chance as a HC. I think that he would be successful.
Looks like you have some updates to make. Today has been quite interesting.
Nothing official until the school announces, but these people did get the Al Golden hire right shortly before it was official
and more trending towards this
Brody Logan was the first guy to break the Fuente news, FWIW.
I just cannot see Richt being at Miami, but I am not Richt, so who am I to have an opinion.
He has to do what is best for him and his family.
Sounds like Al Golden is heading to Rutgers and Dino Babers is heading to the Cuse according to twitter ramblings.. (I dont know how to embed tweets)
Updated with some new graphics because I ran out of time to do it myself.
Who is rumored to be going from USCe to Texas AM?
Since red lines supposedly indicate HC to coordinator moves, somebody must be floating a rumor that Spurrier could be the new OC at Aggy? I'm guessing that the smiley emoji means that it's just a joke or a pipe dream from the map's creator.
Whats that little smirking face going from USCe to A&M?
Some of the other rumors I've read today (sorry, to lazy to link them):
Rhule is out at Mizzou, Temple is trying to making him comfortable enough to stay. Maybe that's a good move, seems logical he's waiting out Frankin at PSU. But is Rhule more interested in UVA than Mizzou?
Mizzou seems to feel that if Dykes or Odom were there man, a deal would be done by now. Maybe they are waiting on a championship team.....Fedora? Or maybe they wanted Rhule and he said no. Some slight hope still for Herman who hasn't signed his deal (connections to Mizzou's AD). My guess is that they have got some no's and are trying to deal with who is down their list.
South Carolina and UVA seem to be in disarray. USC seems to be serious about looking at Muschamp. Lincoln Riley is the hot new name at UVA and USC. Sanford has said he isn't leaving ND, so seems to be no interest from UVA there. I wouldn't be surprised to see UVA go with one of the NFL names they have contacts with, Lazor or Musgrave. Seems like a UVA move. Darkhorses: Bobby Petrino (USC), Bob Diaco (UVA).
Still waiting for Dan Mullen to find a spot, he seems to want to get the F out of Starkville. USC? UVA? Strong could be Richt'd after another loss this weekend (4-8?). Jeremy Pruitt could end up with a good job by default....or back at Bama to run their defense. Dino Babers is too good of a coach to be left at BGSU. Maybe Syracuse. Is Troy Calhoun really going to leave AFA?
throughout this entire cluster that is the coaching carousel I just hope UVA fails mightily. I seriously hope they value themselves much higher than what they're valued by others and keep getting turned down. That would make me so happy. It would make my day to find out they couldn't even get anyone from the top 5 of their wishlist.
Everyone in the state of Virginia when VT announced that Whit had hired Fuente, well before the madness all started:
Yeah, we raised the bar. Beat UVA twice in the span of 48 hours.
They could still end up with Rhule or Mullen. Either would be formidable hires.
I think both are in better coaching situations right now, though. If UVA had acted faster they may have had a shot. With Miami hiring Richt UVa's shot at getting guys like Mullen and Rhule went south IMO. The Coastal is going to be tough to win with Richt at Miami.
Certainly true, I just hope that at some point, their administration thought to themselves, "damn, we have to compete with that move?"
Yeah. Theyve got to be dissapointed by Mike Sanford Jr turning them down, he could be a really good coach in the future. Im glad hes staying at ND.
Gotta be dissapointed be the Richt news, I bet they were so giddy, Ive heard both, Ive heard he was on campus, but I heard some rumors that he never even went....I wonder if the latter was UVA denying he came to save face that they got stood up by the Prettiest girl in school at prom.
I also saw they were going after Sonny Dykes, which I would be REALLY shocked if he made that move, why would he take such a demotion?
Sonny Dykes to UVA would be the most lateral move ever. Cal = UVA. They're the same, opposite coasts.
And Dykes hates it at Cal. So, that would give him some reason to leave but he should probably pick a place that isn't so pretentious to move to.
Dykes is reportedly not happy at Cal and is willing to make a lateral, or even downward move in jobs to get out of there. Rumors have it that he wants to be back in his home state of Texas, though, so UVa seems like a longshot for him.
Both Teel And Norm Wood confirmed Richt was NEVER on campus.
#sauces told me that UVa sent a delegation down to Georgia to negotiate with Richt.
The Devil went down to Georgia. He was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind, and way behind, and looking to make a deal...
Needless to say, he lost.
Sums it up perfectly!! LOLUVA!
I disagree about Mullen, I have read that he enjoys being in Starkville and at Miss State and I don't see him leaving for awhile. He was my top choice for Tech, but I think it's also going to be hard to up the ante with his paygrade at Mizzou or UVA.
It would be difficult to leave Mississippi State, a real football program that's competitive in the SEC, for UVa. I mean, why would a coach do that if they weren't forced out?
Mullen's name has been thrown around at Miami and VT, maybe others. Reading the tea leaves, I think he's looking to capitalize on his current status while Prescott is graduating. If someone is willing to pay him $4.5M a year, he would go, but if not, he will stay and hope they don't suck without Dak. If he can develop another QB and win like he has been, he may be in position to take over for Franklin at PSU in a year or two.
The rumors were pretty heavy that Mullen talked to us, but I imagine the conversation stopped when he said he was looking for a raise on top of his current salary. I've said a few times, I think Fuente is pretty much Mullen, just $1M cheaper. I'm glad we made the move we did. Miami is probably glad they picked Richt instead of Mullen as well.
I could see Mullen at VT or Miami, but not UVa.
I can't see any of them giving him a bump in salary.
Anyone else surprised at the lack of sitting HCs moving to new jobs?
Some more scoop on the UVA coaching search that would rule out Mike Sanford if true
http://footballscoop.com/news/update-at-virginia/
Brohm looks like a possible candidate, but has at least two schools interested.
Brohm would be a good choice for UVA. I'm hopeful they are dumb enough to pick Tedford, Brown, Dykes or Schiano. If they hire one of those four, it wouldn't bother me in the least.
People have pretty short memories, I know Brown is old, but he still has a NC and only had 3 seasons at Texas that he finished less than 9 wins.
Brohm would be a really good hire for them, so I hope they dont go that route, I agree with you on the other three, Id be okay with a Tedford, Dykes or Schiano (depending on who Schiano brought in as Coordinators).
I think Schiano is a bully, so I don't really care who he brings in. His act would wear thin real quick in the Cville.
Teford's washed up. Dykes is a bit of a buffoon, but he can run an effective offense. He would make them interesting, but not feared or sustainably good.
I know Brown once was good, but all the problems we had with an older coach would now be their problems. And it's hard to pull a staff together for a 64 year old coach. It would take Brown a year or two to get the talent level up at UVA and by that time, he's like a year or two older than, you know, old.
That is true. By the time he gets the talent level up he'd be 66-67 and it's obvious age is used against older coaches in recruiting. That's a valid point.
Heard from #sauces that Brohm told UVA thanks but no thanks. Granted this was before it was reported that Brohm was going to interview for their opening.
Brohm has basically said that he doesn't want to talk about other opportunities this week.
Which is a lot different than saying he isn't interested.
So I think there's a lot bigger chance he actually interviews, as opposed to the Richt negotiation leverage technique.
He Who Must Not Be Named meeting with USC-e.
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/rich-rodriguez-south-car...
Richrod v Muschamp v Schiano.
Good luck with that decision.
I hope he takes the UVA job. Ohhh. The hatred for that schoo would be on another level. People still liked London on a personal level. People hate Richard Rodriguez on a personal level.
Looks like Coach Fuente's replacement has been hired:
OC at Arizona State.
Wow. That's an inspired choice.
And it's dated tomorrow.
....wut?
I'm in Central Time, but I'm pretty sure it's still Thursday, December 3.
I think Twitter is doing something weird. The tweet is 100% timestamped 7:33 ET Dec 3, but before the tweet loads something in the underlying text pops up Dec 4 before changing.
Holy ish! Now that Timecop doesn't have to coach he is clearly tweeting from the future to mess with TKP!
yeah...this...I guess. IDK, I didn't see it while it was loading. I just see the tweet that says Dec. 3
I've got Ghostery installed (stops trackers and popups), and it says December 4.
I am surprised Missouri hasn't made moves already. Aiming at a coach in a conf championship or playoff team? They might be overestimating their reach.
I'm thinking its
Rhule. Looks like Odom.Herman is off the market:
Good for him. I'll be keeping an eye on how Houston does with Herman. I think he's going to be a super star coach.
I do as well. Another year like he had this year and waiting on Texas, aTm, LSU and PSU. I bet at least one of those four open up next year.
I'm really surprised USC'w didn't get Herman, that made sense to me at the beginning. He's a Californian guy, but USC'w has hired weird before.
That high a buyout means only the top tier teams come calling next year.
$2.25M? Any p5 school could pay that, especially considering how often those are negotiated. VT, Miami, USC'e, UVA, Mizzou---we could all handle a $2.25M buyout.
It's a moot point, he won't be leaving for a school that can't handle that buyout.
$2.25 million buyout plus expected salary over 4 million? I don't see every P5 school being able to pay that.
Again, you argue the oddest points.
Buyouts are usually negotiated down. They are also often paid out over a few years. Finally, they are usually paid by some booster who has $2.25M to pay a buyout.
$2.25 is getting to the point where it's a big deal, but it's not there yet. For instance, we know McElwain's buyout for UF last year at $7M was a big deal. They negotiated it down by agreeing to play them. CSU must think that worked because Bobo has a $5M buyout for the next year. That's in the range where schools might actually think twice bout hiring him.
I'd have liked to have seen him at VT, but this is even MORE proof that VT did the right thing with Fuente.
So this just happened apparently.
O shit
Color me shocked. Who does ECU think they could get that would be an upgrade to McNeill? He is a darn good coach.
Seriously, Hes been a good coach for them. I was pretty shocked as it sounds most people were.
I guess beating the Hokies every year just isn't enough anymore.
EDIT: I hear Mike London is available.
#MikeLondontoECU
hm. okay.
Wow! Weird move.
I wonder if UVA will go after Ruff.
Who the heck is ECU planning on hiring? That could start a downward spiral and I'm sorta perfectly okay with that.
Everyone is speculating that they're going to try and bring Lincoln Riley back as HC.
So, they might just be trying to pull an Auburn from a few years ago.
That would be quite a coup for them. I'm sure Riley, who has had a significant impact on OU's potential playoff berth, will have better job offers than ECU.
I'm trying to figure out why I hate this move for ECU but love the Richt/Smart move for UGA. They seem similar, but are different.
With Richt, I don't think his next four years will be any better than his last four years. They've topped out. That's probably true with McNeil as well, they won't be better in the next four years than they have been in the last four years.
But the difference is that if you bring in Smart at UGA and he does exceed Richt's production, Smart is your coach in perputuity. He's an alum, coaching at one of the best jobs in the country. It's worth the risk for UGA.
At ECU, if Riley comes back and he exceeds what McNeil has done, then Riley is gone in two years, three tops. Then you are right back to looking for your next coach. And that's the best case scenario for ECU! Every other scenario is much worse....like not getting Riley or Riley not meeting McNeil's success rate.
I wouldn't be surprised however, if successful, Smart bolts for Alabama after Saban retires.
If Smart is successful enough to replace Saban, he's successful enough to make Georgia the next Bama. Why on earth would he leave his alma mater for a lateral move?
Georgia is a blue blood program. If Smart can win championships there he's not going to leave for bama.
It would be interesting to look into the weight Alma Mater plays on coaching jobs...
Just thinking off the top of my head, Beamer, Harbaugh, Shaw, Smart now, Richt now....
I guess, more-so than the fact Georgia is his alma mater, if he's successful enough at Georgia to be considered at Bama that means he's done something. I think at that point Bama and Georgia would be equivalents and I just don't see why he would leave UGA under those circumstances. The closest he'd come would be interviewing to leverage a pay raise at UGA but I think Georgia has the resources to compete with Bama in just about every way.
It's hard to say what will happen at Bama when our Dark Overlord finally hangs it up. You would think Dabo would be high on their list because he's an alum, but he is polar opposite of Saban. That would be a dramatic switch for their fanbase.
I'm not really sure their fanbase would care as long as they keep winning. If you think Bama fans actually care about the style of football that is played more than the W column then you're seriously misguided.
They are currently being torched for this so there better be a good reason behind the story
Woah, Bruce Feldman dropping bombs? is that a verified account? I'm surprised a guy with that kinda clout would tweet something like that. Doesn't seem professional.
Oh, there's more...
Shane to ECU?
UVA should be on the phone to Ruffin in minutes. He has beaten Tech more than their coaches have in last 20 years.
I don't see him as a UVA guy.
Beggars can't be choosers
He's not. He wasn't a candidate before he was fired, definitely not now.
LOL the candidates that UVA thinks the deserve and the candidates they should actually be after are two different groups of people. I'm sure the leadership at UVA is delusional enough to believe they are a destination job for someone like Richt when in fact they should really be looking at the lower tier options....like Ruff.
We'll see, I think they will do fine. It's a good program with a chance to succeed.
I guess we would need to categorize what is a good hire and a less than inspiring hire. For me, for UVA, a good hire is:
Mullen, Rhule, Brohm, Musgrave, Lazor
A less inspiring hire would be:
McNeil, Mack Brown, Schiano, Tedford, Diaco, Golden, Whithers, that guy at ODU
I'm not sure where to put Troy Calhoun, who seems like a distinct possibility for them.
Haha. that ODU coach, poor guy, his names Bobby Wilder, being in the 757, and having family with season tickets, it wont be long until Bobby Wilder is well known. Hes a really, really smart offensive guy who can recruit.
If ECU doesn't have someone lined up ready to announce right now, they just did one of the dumbest things I think I've ever seen. Who the hell would want to come coach for a school that pulls crap like this? They have one bowl-less season and its time to kick him to the curb, after one of the best stretches in school history?
They just dug their own f'n grave. Good lord, and I thought Weaver bungled the Seth Greenberg situation. This is so much dumber.
there is either a scandal or some hot-shot has been hired and they're waiting to announce.
OR
ECU is run by a moron. I guess we'll find out.
Either way, I'll be interested to see who they hire. This could be a huge swing in our eternal series with them.
No chance Lincoln Riley goes either. Him and Ruff had a great relationship. Plus few up and coming coaches would want to work with an athletic department that makes moves like this.
Per VirginiaSports.com, Bronco Mendenhall is the new coach at Uva
Good hire, competition level is going up quickly.
North Texas hires UNC OC:
ESPN report
So UNC is about to lose their OC and I think DC in next year maybe even HC if a big job comes calling.
Rutgers expected to hire Chris Ash (Co-DC at Ohio State)
Cuse is going to hire Bowling Green coach Dino Babers.
Arizona's AD says RichRod was offered South Carolina job and turned it down. Looks like he's staying in AZ.
Why does everyone want that man!?!?!?
Anytime RR is brought up...

And to make it even more entertaining:
Then shots were fired:
That is interesting.
The replies to this tweet are even more interesting. JC is very protective of his "know-it-all" status.
I mean, I can't blame him. He's closer to SC's program than most anyone now.
It's just funny how willing he is to get into heated Twitter exchanges with people over his insights regarding recruits, #sauces, etc.
I much prefer a good #marinade than #sauces. Let the #marinade soak for a few days and its much better IMO.
I think we need to go ahead and define a TKP scale for #sauces.
#sauce - a little bit of flavor
#hotsauce - starting to get some serious heat
#marinade - the marinade is really soaking into the meat; could be real serious
#roux - straight up Cajun cooking here; very thick and substantiated
Any additions are welcome
You forgot rub - not sure where it goes on the list or where TKP'ers will take it, but - there you go.
Will Muschamp to be named USCe head coach per multiple reports. This seems like a horrible hire.
http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/12/06/will-muschamp-south-caroli...
Yeah if this doesn't go well, it might be his last head coaching gig at a P5. USCe was scraping the bottom of the barrel.
ESPN just reported Muschamp to USF...which was a mistake as all other outlets reporting USCe.
Although USF might make more sense for Muschamp (work your way back in slowly), it is absolutely hilarious if ESPN actually "reported" the wrong school in their haste for "breaking" news.
WVU may be about to jump in this game REALLY late, admin is still undecided if they want to fire Holgersen or not.
Rich Rod back to WVU?
Those fans want him less than we did.
That's not possible.
I haven't met a cousins fan that likes the guy, I know several people on TKP thought he would be a good hire.
This has got Lane Kiffin written all over it.
If you want a good chuckle at the couch-burners' expense, here's a fun take on the Holgo situation:
http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2015/12/8/9872726/should-west-vi...
I had no idea BYU was restricted to hiring a coach who is LDS. Really keeps their list pretty small. DC at Stanford seems logical. Navy's coach is LDS but they are concerned about bringing the triple option to a passing school. It might take some time to get right, but he could recruit the physicality and toughness at BYU to make it work.
Andy Reid is also LDS.
Wow that has to really limit your options, add in the pay being somewhere around only 1 million.
Shane's name coming up for he ECU job. That would be weird the next 10 years.
http://www.reflector.com/search-ecu-coach-3059605
Seems to me that we've done enough for ECU already.
It's the caliber of program he should go for - G5, pretty good recent success, geographically somewhat difficult with ACC and SEC around but plenty of talent to try to obtain - but man is that a toxic place right now. Could be one of those that Foster calls a "coach killer."
would be a steal for them...I think the way in which they fired Ruffin has to be a pretty big red flag for prospective coaches. I'm mixed on this. On the one hand I want to see Shane get his shot (and be successful) but on the other hand I want ECU to spiral into the lowest depths of football purgatory for eternity. I hate ECU. I liked Ruff, though, and I feel like he was done wrong and I feel badly for him because of it. But I HATE ECU.
I'd like to see Shane get a shot, but I'd have to root against him in every contest if he went to ECU.
Talk about upside down: VT with a high powered offense and ECU with (a) Beamer.
I don't know if anyone has seen this news, but ECU is approaching "Dumpster Fire" status with their current AD:
SB Nation Article Link
Good Lord Almighty, what the heck is going on down there...
Wanted raises for his assistants.
Which is perfectly fine and logical position for Ruffin McNeill to take. I just don't understand the AD's point of view. Also, the sticky point is that the AD was offering less in the extension than what was agreed for the Assistant Coaches in his original contract. Like I said, approachin "Dumpster Fire" status. What head coach is going to take that job?
I thought London might..and then he ended up at UMD. As a position coach. LOL
ECU hasn't just shot themselves in the foot, they've blown their foot plum off. I couldn't be happier about it.
It mentioned London as someone they would possibly consider but not likely. Obviously no chance of that now but that would have been Christmas come early again for us Hokie fans.
For sheer entertainment value, I would love to see Dick Rod back to WVU. Another run with that drama and they may just wipe each other off the map.
Who would consider London? He just took a job for MERRYLAND D line coach.
Durkin apparently likes former HC on his staff.
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/ball-state-cardinals-mar...
I think Fuente did that at Memphis and it was lauded as a great move by a guy with no HC experience to have former HCs on staff to have someone with that experience on staff. I think this is a good move by Durkin.
On paper that sounds like he's putting together a pretty legit staff, but I'd have to think Durkin is going to have to manage a lot of egos, I mean thats three guys now who have been 'the-guy', the ones to make the final decisions and now they're answering to a first year HC.
It could be great having those minds all together on committee on how to best build the program, but it could be a dumpster fire, they dont necessarily exude success.
I would be a little cautious if that were Virginia Tech, it seems pretty risky.
Another FBS job opened today, Texas State.
Chip Kelly just fired by Philly.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/12/29/eagles-fire-chip-kelly/
Illinois has just fired Bill Cubit, a few months after giving him a 2-year extension, and less than a week from the start of their spring practice. That timing is...odd.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14907359/illinois-fightin...
Illinois is a damn mess
Every time dumpster fire news like this breaks I think my lucky stars that we have Whit.
Seems like Illinois got their own Whit(man).
I'll show myself out.
Is he caught up in previous coaches allegations?
They are also delaying spring practice now also. And his son who was the OC was also fired.
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/03/05/illinois-fires-head-football-coac...
Completely classless move by UI. The coach was hosting 5 recruits this weekend while this happened. Also had 4 new coaches uproot and move to coach there.
Players found out on twitter.
Eh, the interim AD may have just over-committed the program by hiring the interim head coach when he did. So the new, full-time AD made the decision to make a splash hire that will likely take the program further. It looks bad, but it's a good move for UI.
This.
Hell, the interim AD called the extending of Cubit "not ideal". Suuuuper vote of confidence there. Cubit's ouster was literally the first thing the new AD did upon stepping foot in his new office.
Oh, and then went out and hired Lovie Smith. I'd say that's a pretty great hire. Net-net, this is a big win for the Illini
Yikes. As I said
belowabove, this is a good move long-term - but if all this is true, that interim AD should be baggin' groceries down at the Foodway. #brookswashere#sowasred
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-lovie-smith-illinois-foo...
Well this AD works fast.
Huge hire on his very first day on the job. Crazy.
An interesting choice too. I'm skeptical of Lovie as a college coach just because he's been out of it for so long, but the man is a damn good football coach. Even if it seemed his defensive schemes were getting figured out by the end of his NFL run, I'd imagine he'd be able to turn it around in the college game and field some solid teams. His recruiting is about as big of a question mark as you could imagine, but Illinois was never going to get an all-around perfect coach, and his NFL pedigree should help immensely in that department. I don't think they could have hoped for much more.
Also, their AD is also named WHIT(man).
I am somewhat surprised by the pay scale for a coach at a mid bottom BIG school though. That's a hefty paycheck.
Backloaded as hell, though. 48% of the contract's total value comes in the last two years. It looks like this is structured on the assumption that Lovie won't be around by year five of the contract.
Compare to Fuente's contract, which is worth a combined $20.45 million (compared to Lovie's $21 million), but increases incrementally only from $3.2 to $3.65 million over the same period of time. Fuente's is a "let's build a lasting relationship" deal, while Lovie's contract dangles the carrot.
Still surprised they offer 3 millions by year three.
$3 mil would tie for 34th place on this list, very middle of the pack for a P5 program.
Coincidentally, $2 mil would tie for 55th place, and that's where Lovie's sitting for the next two years.
Backloading that contract so heavily doesn't seem like a great idea to me. That's a tremendous gamble that he'll be successful. If he does well, that's great. Either he'll be worth the money or someone will hire him away and pay the buyout. If Illinois remains mediocre, they can't afford to fire him. They'll either be stuck with an overpriced coach, or they'll find themselves paying him a huge salary to not coach for them.
Backloaded contracts are the adjustable rate mortgages of the sports world. Enticing on paper, and an albatross around your neck in practice. I see this blowing up one way or another.
It definitely looks like a terrible idea on the surface, but depending on how the buyout is structured, it might not be so terrible. For a young and unproven coach, with little leverage, you might be able to negotiate a friendly buyout, which would benefit both coach and school. I somehow doubt that's the case for a guy of Lovie Smith's stature, though. I'm sure he was able to negotiate a generous buyout. If he flops, he'll be the next Charlie Weis, still killing the team for years after he's gone.
I am sure he will have an impact on recruiting, I think people make the mistake of thinking 1. HS Coaches wouldnt jump at any chance to talk with an NFL coach, let alone, one who had success in the immediate area. 2. HS players wouldnt resonate with someone who coached NFL talent. 3. An NFL coach, once jumping to the college scene, immediately loses all capability of relating to people.
I think one things for sure, Illinois will have a football team. and stay away from Bud Foster.
Man... Illinois hiring Chicago's former head coach.... Don't underestimate the draw of playing for a Bears head coach in your home state college.
Lovie's name alone is going to funnel a lot of talent in that area to Illinois.
Basically all the high school football talent in the state is in the Chicago area. There is an entrenched Chicago-to-Notre Dame pipeline, with all the Catholic schools there. This move might significantly disrupt that. Yeah, religion is important, but this is a chance to play your college ball for the last coach that took your home team to the Superbowl.
