Week 9 College other football games

This week is starting out heavy with six games on Thursday night. WVU is getting
Beat easily by TCU, I think this season combined with last three could see WVU add themselves to the coaching search. UNC and Pitt playing for top spot in the Coastal and Oregon trying to turn things around.

Chris Blewitt... well... lived up to his name on that PAT.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

The fact that we lost to ecu makes my stomach turn

Don't look now but UCONN is having their way with ECU.

ECU only has 107 passing yds and no passing TD's and like 150 rushing yards.

Somebody is surprised by that?

Come on.

I know it's easier to convince ourselves that these average teams are just having a powerhouse year rather than admitting VT is stinking up the place, but I'm noticing a trend.

Wow just looked at the final stats

ECU was held to Passing for 137 yards threw 4 interceptions and had 3 fumbles. UCON had 404 yards of offense against ECU

Was at ORegon/ASU game, pretty good time

Did you wear VT gear? Just curious, I didn't someone on TV wearing Maroon and Orange or anything.

He is suspended for the next game, though. (This week is a bye week).

Off to a Halloween/UT-UK party. Go Wildcats!

NC state giving Clemson all they can handle so far. Gotta root for Clemson though, for conference prestige and whatnot

UVA just gave GT loss #6, so our matchup with the Bees will be a battle for their bowl eligibility.

"Exit light..."

If UVA can beat Georgia Tech then we sure as shit can do the same.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Or just as easily lose to one if not both of them

WTH is going on here?

He looks drunk and douchier than normal. Is he licking donut glaze off his chin?

He was drunk with ecstasy after the miracle win against FSU

The case for Mark Richt to VT is growing ever stronger. Florida is up 27-3 over Uga as Uga's Championship season further erodes

The talk will intensify, but I have no idea why we would want Richt. I wouldn't necessarily object, but we can do a lot better in terms of bringing new blood into the program.

"Exit light..."

O, definitely. There are many others I would chose but you got to believe UGa is done with Richt as its been 15 years now and its time for change

I'm lukewarm on Richt. He's coached underperforming teams for ages at UGA.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I am on record before and now saying that I'd love Richt. He knows how to run a program, has extensive coaching a great team, but does not put up with crap that college kids tend to get into.

He's probably the best-established reputation I can think of in college ball with the exception of Frank and Bill Snyder. He's an old-school guy who ALWAYS has AWESOME running backs and the occasional great QB and WR.

If UGA fires Richt, they may become the next Tennessee.

They are basically Tenn now. UGA can't win shit with Richt, but think they are destined for greater.

At least Fulmer won the big one before he hit his ceiling.

U of A went to an at large New Years bowl last year...

....and beat Oregon who played for a national title.

Great so one good season and he got them to a bowl game and lost. People lambast VT and the goal of getting to a bowl game and keeping the streak alive while just getting to a bowl game is the high light of Rich Rods tenure since fleeing WVU.
His record since WVU:
3-9
5-7
7-6
8-5
8-5
10-4
And currently 5-4 and MIGHT win one more to get bowl eligible. Yea his record is just outstanding

I've been following Georgia for about five years now.

On-field results aside, Richt bringing in Lambert and then starting a QB carousel this year is probably his most questionable coaching move in my mind. I mean, Lambert holds the clipboard, fan favorite Brice Ramsey is PUNTING, and Faton Bauta threw 4 picks today.

That team has too much offensive talent to be wasted like that.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

If Clemson beats FSU next week and handles Scar they will stomp whoever is in the ACCG from the coastal and be in the playoff. Clemson is what a complete team looks like.

Leg, but their defense didn't look great against NCSt, who was beaten by a mediocre VT team.

That Clemson FSU game is going to be interesting next week.

They also shut out Miami to the tune of 58-0.

it will be interesting next week though.

That all just proves the non-transitive property of ACC football.

Remember the big circle of the ACC Coastal last year? Happened by mid-October.

How about the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game? 70-53 and combined for 1,293 yards in one football game.

I respect that the Big XII plays a different brand of ball than everyone else, but this is out of control.

Indeed, someone should put a stop to this. The only problem is no one knows how to make a stop in BIGXII football.

Texas will fire Strong this year. You know when it's not a good fit and that is not a good fit.

I didn't even see this result yesterday. Texas has 3 wins this year vs Rice, K-State, and OK (what?).

I hate to say it, but I think Charlie is going to be done as well. I don't know what is going wrong down there but I don't think he has any support whatsoever.

So: Where is Charlie's next destination? I'm going to suggest that Arkansas fires Bielema, hires Petrino back, and Charlie goes to Louisville. College Coaching Wheel of Destiny.

Strong is a serious candidate at USCe and Miami if he makes himself available.

You really think they will fire him? I'm not so sure yet, now if they don't win another game I think your right.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Their expectations are thru the roof.

But I'm quick to pull the plug. I had seen enough from Loeffler to propose firing him after just one year.

Miami is going to penalty their way into defeat here. Giving Duke tons of free yardage, over 200 tonight and 3 PI calls on this last drive alone.

Just when you thought college football couldn't get any crazier, Miami goes and does that. Wow. Just wow.

Im all for celebration, but how is that Miami player running on to the field before the guy is even in the end zone not a penalty, the dude didn't even have his helmet on and beat most of the rest of the team to the end zone.

Wow. Didn't even catch that.

Rumblings on Twitter (so take that for what it's worth) that Duke might have cause to appeal to the ACC since it was the final play of the game. Waiving off the block that was flagged as part of the review is not legal. I guess the officials could always claim they huddled and had decided there should be no call, independent of video review, but still.

"Exit light..."

The refs did confer on the field before the head official related the findings from video review. He said something along the lines of, "After video review, all passes were behind the ball carrier and no runner's knee was down. Also concerning the block in question, it was from the side, not the back."

The block in the back flag being waived off was most likely from the officials' conference before the call, not the replay.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

I hope you're right. The ESPN article I read explicitly said they reviewed the block in the back call and reversed it. My first thought was that they can't do that. I guess that's what I get or trusting an ESPN article to get the story straight.

The way I saw it, he was about to make the call and then got "buzzed" again and went back to review.

What was the second review? Block in back? Where to eat dinner? Somebody needed to catch a flight?

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Pure conjecture, but I'd imagine there was one review to make sure all laterals were legal, and another to make sure Bush's knee wasn't down on his lateral. But they also very well could have illegally reviewed the block in the back.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

What are the rules for appealing and how that can change the outcome of the game?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

There were at least three block in the backs that should have been called earlier even if that final one was from the side. The twelfth man on the field without a helm also should have been a penalty.

I noticed that too!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Unbelievable Miami/Duke ending!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I thought Michigan/MSU was a crazy ending. That seems tame by comparison. Truly the nuttiest thing I've ever seen pulled off on a football field.

"Exit light..."

MIAMI PULLED A STANFORD BAND!

That was NUTSO! So glad the refs took the time to get it right. They even reversed a penalty. Miami deserved that TD

In the last few years, I've witnessed the Prayer at Jordan-Hare, the Kick Six, Boise of Liberty, and, in the last THREE WEEKS, Michigan/MichiganState, GT/FSU, and Miami/Duke.

Shit is just nuts. Just fucking nuts. I love college football.

I had no idea you could reverse a penalty on replay, outside of targeting. Really curious as to whether or not you can actually do that. I mean, they did, but #goacc and all...WHERE IS RON CHERRY WHEN YOU NEED HIM?

"Exit light..."

I DON'T THINK YOU'RE ALLOWED TO!

HAHAHAH nicely done, #goacc refs!

I think they got it right in the end though.

They certainly did; all those blocks looked good to me. Just insane that they actually waived off the flag...

Agreed on your above list of insane plays. I saw all of those live except Boise's Statue of Liberty. Had to catch that one on replay.

"Exit light..."

Sure did look like Walton's knee was down before he let go of the ball.

edit: I thought Bush wore #1.

After watching the replay again, there is a clear block in the back at the Duke 15 yard line. Just before the final lateral.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Block in the back is actually NOT reviewable, so the ref's gave the game to Miami.

I listened to it on the radio as it happened, just unbelievable

I was at the game. I am a grad student at Duke so I cheer hard for them when they aren't playing Tech. Last week I was sick when Duke won, this week I am (almost) just as sick. Can't win for losing...

Just seeing that GagTech choked in Boohooville immediately made me feel nauseous and sick literally. Completely lost appetite. How do they stack and matchup against us? Honestly?

Nauseous and sick to your stomach?

When Minnesota could have kicked the FG to go to overtime. Gutsy to go for the win, but, man....

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Anyone else noticed when the ref first tried to explain the ruling on the field during the Miami game? I really think the officiating at the end of the game brought it to a whole new level.

This wasn't the same crew from the VT/ECU game was it?

That was an AAC crew.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Damn it Temple, I was rooting for you :(

Same here. I feel like I'm in bizarro-world, as I'm watching Temple play on Sat primetime, and I'm envious of the way they play. Temple. Sigh.

It just shows what fresh coaching blood can do for a program. Same with Memphis and Houston.

And I mean no disrespect to CFB. But, it's time.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Regarding Memphis, they might call the CFP selection committee's hand this season. If they remain undefeated and Ole Miss manages to make the SECCG, I don't think there's any way Memphis doesn't make the playoffs.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Temple and Houston are decent opponents. But what we're looking at here is a Boise State situation... win a couple tough games and coast through the rest of the schedule against scrubs. Not playoff worthy.

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

If Memphis wins out, they'll have played a harder schedule than Boise ever did.

It's a funny situation when the worst team you play is actually in a P5 conference. (it's Kansas, but still...)

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Exactly. The AAC is the conference custom built to blow up the CFP. It's that weird middle ground between the P5 and the group of five. Does anyone know what their record against P5 opponents is?

Again, it's predicated on Ole Miss making the SECCG, but if an undefeated Memphis who beat the SEC West divisional champ gets excluded, I expect the lawyers to get involved. When you reach a point where a team does literally everything it can do and still gets excluded, that's when anti-trust lawsuits get filed.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

7-12

Temple beat Penn State, lost to ND.
Cinci beat da U.
USF beat Syracuse, but lost to FSU and Maryland.
ECU beat us, lost to Florida.
UCF lost to Stanford and South Carolina (and everyone else).
Houston beat Vandy.
Memphis beat Kansas and Ole Miss.
Navy lost to ND.
Tulsa lost to Oklahoma.
Tulane lost to Duke and GT.
SMU lost to Baylor and TCU.

I didn't count it, but UConn beat Army and lost to BYU. Not sure if those independents count as P5.

If we only count teams with winning records (taking out UCF, Tulsa, Tulane, and SMU), the record is 7-5.

Thanks for the research. Leg.

So basically the top half of the conference can hang with the P5s. Yeah, I think they will be the conference that eventually forces the playoff field to eight teams.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Considering they got downgraded right after they transitioned from the Big East, that's legit.

Although, the Big East has a couple of years where several teams got hot, but then flamed out within two years. I'm thinking Louisville, Rutgers, and USF circa 2007.

I'd still take Houston, Memphis, and even Temple over Boise State in their heyday. At least these three teams have each other to contend with, and all of them have multiple P5 teams on their schedule.

Re: Duke/Miami

So after some internetting, I see that we have a play that was reviewed for almost 10 minutes that features a player's knee clearly being down, 2 text book blocks in the back, and a bench player on the field without a helmet during the play.

For the integrity of the game, we can only hope they award Duke the game this week.

I watched Coach Cut's presser after the game and I really just wanted to give him a hug. I don't know what's going on with the ACC refs this year but it seems like there's some serious dirty pool happening.

Unfortunately, I think we are going to get the standard response "of yes there was an error in officiating, but its too late now. It is in the record books."

There was a block in the back down on the Miami side of the field at one point. I didn't see the replay showing the knee down. Watching it live, the announcers focused mostly on the laterals being backward and the final block that was within the peripheral vision of the Duke player (this was the very last block thrown). I did see the bench player without a helmet on the field.

That moment was just a throw-out-the-rulebook-and-let-the-boys-play type of play. I waited very, very impatiently for them to get back from the replay, and when they came back the first time, they only announced the knee was not down.

Then, they came back after another replay and announced the whole shebang. No knee down, all passes were laterals, no block in the back.

Assuming all the calls were correct (*and there seems to be significant debate about this), I'm glad to see that the refs took the time and energy to watch the replays to determine whether each aspect of the play was legal or not. Assuming the calls were made correctly (*), I love that they went a little off script to make sure they got it right (*).

Also, after all that, Miami deserved that TD. I hate it for Cut, but, c'est la vie.

The other night, I got into a heated argument between college football and the NFL with my father in law. After the games today, he just quietly sipped his beer, looked over and said in his Pennsylvania Dutch accent "well damn"

So in terms of coaches, Matt Rhule trending up and Rich Rod trending down?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Duke got robbed. There was definitely a block in the back on that play.

Maybe it was a technicality, because it wasn't the one called?

People were getting mugged all over the place on that last play, and though most appear to be legal hits, the review should have been comprehensive.
