2015 D or 2007 D?
We got destroyed by LSU (er...maybe... i don't remember that game happening....) but I love the rebound vs FSU, Miami, and yes...even BC. So it's hard to me to say which one I'd prefer this year.
2007 D players had some great special teams impact a la Klempsun game, so hopefully we're just as well rounded this year as then.

I would say the 2015 because that unit is undefeated
It's also got Kendall Fuller who may be the single highest rated player we've had on the squad since Mike Vick.
2007 because Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi.
Xavier Adibi - fav hokie lb of all time
Brandon Flowers - fav corner of all time, period. Kendall is a close second favorite.
Tough call to make, but nostalgia says 2007.
can we just take the '07 linebackers and keep our secondary and d line?
I think LB play in 07...especially latter half of the year -- has a leg on this young corps. I feel with Macho, Brandon, Kam, and DJ, that the DB corps is MARGINALLY better than this year...but our DL this year seems to be better than 07. Ellis and Booker are good, but they're no Maddy, Ekanem, Marshall and DADDIIIIIII!!!
Probably 2007 due to linebacker play, but depending on how things go that decision might change.
Had we beat BC, a large human intervention would have been necessary to keep us out of the MNC. Computers had us there with the loss IIRC
Humans that could recognize the FCS caliber offense on the other side of the ball. But God was that fun.
Can I pick 2005 or 2006? Those were our most solid and dominant defenses and the 2005 group was wildly talented. I'll wait on this year's edition until we've played some games.
As great as the '07 defense was, it was still a firm base 4-3 defense, well suited to the era but woefully outgunned in today's game. I'll take the nickle today, no questions asked.
And just to clear it up, you can't really go the route of "I'm just talking about personnel," because you can't ignore scheme. If you tried to play nickel with the roster from '07, I don't think it translates well. We're built for the nickle in this era of #DBU.
It's hard to say I'm sure the 07 defense could have made accommodations and you are comparing 2007 defense to the 2015 style of play I'm not sure that is in the spirit of the question. It's like Lebron vs Jordan, well, looked at the quality of competition and athleticism, Jordan was shooting over Craig Ehlo.
I guess that's my whole issue with hypotheticals like this. What is the question actually asking?
If we trotted that 2007 defense out onto the field today, it would get burned by some modern offenses.
If we took that personnel and played our current defense, I don't think that roster would be as adept at it because they weren't recruited to play that scheme.
Is it asking me if I wish it was 2007 again instead of 2015? No, I'll take the post-Stinespring era every time.
Just based on the "spirit of the question," I'll take the 2015 defense, because that's the one I'll watch throttle anOSU on Monday.
How about evening it up a bit? Compare 07 nickel D vs 15 nickel D. Compare 07 4-3 vs 15 4-3? It's not fair to compare a 4-3 to a nickel D, especially since Foster was and is still our D coordinator - he'd use whomever he needed to for us to win the game, and he indeed use nickel D for us back then to, but just not as much.
I guess by that metric I'd definitely go 2015, because the modern iteration of the nickel is superior to the 2007 version, IMO, and that should, also in IMO, be our base defense against most of the offenses we face this day and age.
2005 and 2006 both had some pretty nasty defenses. Do they play into this equation?
Not in this current thread - but indeed the were sick AF.
2007 and not close IMO. DL is the only unit i'd switch from 2007 and even that isn't by that much.
If you guys win on Monday night this question should be a lot easier to answer.
Not really. As good as you guys might be playing one good game doesn't mean we'll do it all year. I also think your suspensions and lack of WR experience will hurt you guys more against us than later in the year.
Can I take this year's defensive line
plus Kam at Rover, DJ Parker at free safety,
Kendall and Brandon Flowers at corner
Hall, Adibi, and DeathBacker,
KyFuller as 12th man, who, because of who he is, is allowed on the field at all times?
Is that a thing? Am I disqualified?
