Incoming Hokie Khadim Sy wins National Title for Oak Hill

Oak Hill beat La Lumiere for the HS National Championship thanks to Khadim Sy's last second tip in overtime. Let's hope he brings that good fortune with him to the Burg.

Sy has looked pretty darn good from what I've watched of Oak Hill during the tournament on ESPN. He's got great shot blocking/rebounding instincts and his offensive game is coming around pretty well. He's got a great frame that could add muscle easily. He's got the chance to be a real inside force for us.

Expecting some "Oh Say Can You Sy" shirts from the Cassell Guard next season.

Sy has a lot of potential but is still a work in progress. I wouldn't be shocked if he was redshirted this year.

I would be shocked. This isn't football, unless he's hurt, you want him available on your bench. Sounds like he's comparable to Hamilton on the boards and defensively and comparable to Satch offensively.

I don't think he will play a lot, but only Henry's minutes are available (assuming everyone returns).

plus, we have a big need for a true big man. if Sy/hamilton/someone can step in to play more as a true center, leday would be freed up to play more as a true stretch 4 that he seems to be suited as. the opportunity for playing time is there.

Listen, I think he's going to be a great player. At the same time, I don't think he's ready for ACC play as of right now. Who knows, maybe he makes the leap over the summer and I get proven wrong (I hope this is the case).

This. He has a lot of kinks in his game to work out and isn't exactly the most athletic guy on the floor. He's a bit of a project who I wouldn't count on big things from until his 2nd or 3rd year

Put it into context: can he provide equal or better minutes than Pierce or Hamilton?

That's not even considering Buzz' unique rotations. There may be opponents where Sy can provide something that Pierce or Hamilton can't.

Sy's ceiling is probably somewhere around Chieck Diakite from mid-2000s VT basketball. It's a role player, but a role he could fill against certain opponents in his first year.

Red shirting in basketball is pretty rare unless you're injured. Also considering he is the only recruit in this class, I doubt he would redshirt

Wouldn't being the only recruit in the class make him more likely to be redshirted? - By definition, there are 12 scholarship players more senior.

But, considering the lack of depth of big men on VT, I agree that Sy is unlikely to be redshirted. Redshirting will depend, however, on the availability of Hamilton and if Buzz believes Sy is better than Hamilton and or Pierce. If Sy is better or Hamilton unavailable, then he'll probably get minutes. If not, then he'd really be the 4th C/PF-type on the roster and thus may not see the floor anyways (leading to redshirt).

A huge deal in basketball is evening out your classes for recruiting purposes. A perfect roster gas three players in each class. You definitely don't want a class with zero players.

I would suggest that those of you who are asking if he will redshirt look at what/how many college basketball players redshirt. cds7c is right, non-transfer/non-injured basketball players rarely redshirt, only super project players like JVZ. A guy who plays for Oak Hill is an unlikely redshirt candidate. And as I have said multiple times, most big men take longer to develop, Sy may or may not be a little bit of a project, but that's not uncommon for bigs.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Most likely won't redshirt, that rim protection/rebounding will likely replace Shane Henry's, if Hamilton/Pierce don't get it together

He has improved quite a bit since the start of the season apparently. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets a boost from the recruiting service.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Outlaw may have to be replaced, also Devin Wilson making the football team would mean his scholarship would not count as a BB scholarship. We may have more openings than 1st thought.

For what it's worth, it looks like KJ had that surgery on his left foot already.
