Offseason: /r/CFB - What do CFB fans think about the Virginia Tech Hokies?

The college football subreddit is doing an offseason daily thread "What do CFB fans think about [Team X]" Today was our day.

Some entertaining comments:

TOP 3 COLOR SCHEME, AMAZING NICKNAME, GENERALLY BEAUTIFUL UNIFORMS. and actually, our former governor Chet Culver played at VT in the 80's. I see him at Dowling Catholic events, here in des moines, quite often and he is ALWAYS wearing his VT hat and it's amazing to me for some reason.
question for VT folk: if i were to gobble at him, what night happen???

Made good hire. Will be interesting to see how Fuente does.
Tbh, could use some uniform direction. Off the top of my head: Steal Minnesota's browner maroon. Try a traditional, collegiate look. Quit going crazy with the helmet logos. Why not blank? Everybody likes a nice, blank helmet, I find. Either that or just "TECH." You'll be "the" Tech. People will hate that. Hate makes you strong.

TCU fan:

I played for Fuente, he's an awesome guy and is going to do great things for the Turkeys this year. Excited to watch.

Nebraska Fan:

Fuck their wide open WR's. Everything else is cool, though

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Why is Nebraska so Coale-d?? Teehee

Second gif...HD TV sure has come along way

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I actually kind of dug the "just TECH" suggestion. Why not? Clearly Virginia Tech is the best Tech, and getting to lord it over GIT all year would be icing on the cake.

The basketball team has unis with just TECH. I'd like to see the helmets

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

That is a great thread, thanks for the link. That Nebraska fan made my morning.

Geez lack of respect from Tribe and Radford "fans".

I always think of Radford as the little brother. Sometimes your little brother will pull for you because you're family, but sometimes he won't because he's envious. I pull for Radford because I feel like there's a lot of people that go there that are tech fans.

Edit: oh yeah, and W&M? They're like UVA's little sister.

You just described my actual little brother. (went to VCU)

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Man, living in Nebraska for so long and being a Hokie fan, made those two games memorable for a lifetime. I was at the 08' VT vs Neb game with another Hokie, and it was the one of the greatest times in my life. The 09' Tyrod & Danny Coale play almost brought me to tears.

Only thing that sucked was the fact that we couldn't sit in the Hokie section. Oh well...

-Being aggressive, being tough...that's the Virginia Tech way.

In my profile, I listed the home game against Nebraska as a highlight of attended Hokie games. Also would like to shout out to Nebraska fans that were there. They were extremely respectful and had nice things to say about B'burg and VT. I really like the GENERALLY BEAUTIFUL UNIFORMS comment. I got rung up on a previous post when I said I like the simple color balance and leave the helmets alone. Sheesh!! It is one of the things I really liked when we moved up here 25 years ago and picked the Hokies as our team. I thank the Good Lord for that decision.

Good post, and had to chuckle at the Nebraska fan. I do agree with the comment on the crazy helmet logos. Seems to me it would be a good idea to find a helmet logo or two that we like, and stick with them. Having a different helmet design or logo every other week is nuts, unless it's being done strictly for merchandise sales, and auctioning off helmets. All these helmet designs/logos confuses the random college football fan cause it doesn't promote the school's identity, unless you're Oregon, but if we were all like Oregon, it would be difficult to figure out teams based on helmet designs/logos.

I'd say stick with the regular VT logo. It's easy and looks good.

Quit going crazy with the helmet logos

"Steal Minnesota's browner maroon."

Oh, Hell. NOOO!!!

Steal Minnesota's browner maroon.

My response?

Chicago Maroon > Minneapolis Maroon

I believe the author of that quote has "browner maroon" confused with "dark red."

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I'm having browser issues. I didn't do the double post, sorry. If someone wants to delete one of them, have at it.

Just edit them to Emma Watson gifs and no one will notice.

I decided to peek back over here and see how you guys are doing. Looks like there is plenty of optimism for the new era.

This topic caught my eye. Part of me wants to say that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, but another part recognizes that perception has some importance because it affects recruiting, scheduling, etc.

I only know what my perceptions have been/are. But what are we talking about? VT as an institution, stadium atmosphere, fans, or football program? I only feel comfortable with talking about the football program. Those other things are the playground for trolls. It really irritates me when some fan's response to losing is, "Yeah, well I will tip you 5 bucks after you graduate when you deliver my pizza."

I'm old enough to have seen VT football go from obscurity to significance. That was essentially the Beamer Era. I think there was a lot of respect for Coach Beamer for doing that. My perception of VT rose when they started making some noise on the national stage, and I thought most of that was primarily due to recruiting some great athletes from the Tidewater Area. I also took note of some great players like Bruce Smith, Michael Vick, and all those DB's, among others. Still, I looked at them like a program that was solid, with the potential to be in the Top 10 in a given year, but not be there consistently. I gave them a 5% chance of going into Ohio Stadium and beating the Buckeyes... until they made me give them a 100% chance of doing that. After that, I had to modify my view to include the idea that there is enough in that program to beat anyone anywhere. However, while I think the level at which they have recruited and developed players allows them to compete at the highest levels, it has not allowed them to consistently have the kind of depth that allows them to cope with the attrition that comes with a football season. Fuente will have an opportunity to continue that, but his challenge in elevating the program (and its perception) will be to recruit and develop better depth. That's basically what I think. FWIW

You were pretty spot on for an outsider's view (not meant to be backhanded). We have definitely struggled with depth, particularly these last few seasons, and like you said that is directly related to some recruiting misses coupled with attrition from within the program (transfers, guys not making it, not developing). Having solid depth is certainly one of the big steps for any program to make that step into a legitimate and consistent contender.

Other than people's predictions going into VT-OSU in the Shoe, I'm not sure there's anything else in your post that we would disagree with here.

You're exactly right. Good coaching can help make up for subpar recruiting, but to win championships, you need both. Recruiting misses have killed us in recent years.
