2016 All-ACC Football Team

The ACC announced the 2016 All-Conference teams today:

http://www.theacc.com/news/acsma-announces-2016-all-acc-football-teams-1...

The only Hokie on the first team was DT Woody Baron, and it's a well-deserved honor.

On the second team: Isaiah Ford and Tremaine Edmunds
Third team: Bucky Hodges, Jon McLaughlin, Augie Conte, Joey Slye, Andrew Motuapuaka, Greg Stroman
Honorable Mentions: Wyatt Teller, Ken Ekanem, Chuck Clark, Terrell Edmunds

Of note:

1. Conte ranking higher than Teller. I didn't see that one coming.
2. No mention of Jerod Evans at all. I'm not the only one that's surprised.

So what does everyone think? Did the voters get it right or wrong? Were Evans and Ford (or others) snubbed?

I'm already through 5 different phases of anger re: Jerod not getting honorable mention. Guess I'll go kick rocks now.

@hokie_rd

I don't like to throw the word "criminal" around but omitting Jerrod, mis-ranking Teller/Conte, and putting 3 Pitt defenders anywhere on that list is damn near just that.

On the other hand, chip on the ol' shoulder for Jerrod in these next two games and next season.

A bit surprised Ford didn't make 1st team WR as well.

I personally believe these teams come down to stats more often than not. And Mike Williams and Amba Etta-Tawo in particular put up some crazy numbers this weekend and all season. Switzer was steady all year for UNC and probably had some better "marquee" stats than Isaiah.

"This is just spectacular... These people are losing their mind. This is beautiful." -Mike Patrick

I agree with you. But there's Switzer's stat-line against us - I'm not sure Ford has had a day that bad since middle school. :)

And now the Coastal Division Champions get to travel to Orlando with a chip on their shoulder the size of Hurricane Matthew

These always cause a ton of backlash. Not worth getting upset over it, these are always biased to the top team.

Well apparently not always to the top team....

top team

UVA had 2 first team defenders. Not saying they aren't good players but I wouldn't call the list "biased". More just... bad.

"Yeah, it do." - Mike Vick

I'm only referring to the wealth of Clemson players, not that other teams don't get any. Leggett has fewer yards and TD's than both Bucky and Hikutini, for example.

Also name brand and stats that don't necessarily determine your worth get you on these lists. Tankersley by advanced metrics, should be behind Stroman, Jaire Alexander, and Corn Elder. Tavarus McFadden is way behind all of them, he just has a bunch of picks.

Stuff like that alters these lists. Just saying it's a very imperfect and biased science that causes a lot of issues. It's difficult to narrow down these players as it is very subjective, so you usually end up with every fanbase upset.

bucky is also a wr not a te, so he shouldn't even be on the list.

Wow. Who in the heck votes for this??? Think they have been hit in the head too many times with the dumb stick.

It's the group that incorrectly posts CFB as owner of the lunch pail back in 2015.

Let's Go

HOKIES

It looks like he has a piece of candy in one hand and the reporters have to guess which one...

Can anyone explain who the voters are for this? I'm not well versed enough and just very confused. Statistically, it doesn't make sense, anecdotally, it makes even less sense.

This is trash. Evans should be 3rd team, not Trubisky. Ford should be 1st team, not Switzer.

I hope this gets put on the bulletin board for the week. Absolutely absurd.

edit: HAHAHAH just saw UVA has 3 1st-Team All-ACC defenders.

come on guys, you need to take into account their entire body of work, not just a single game in a hurricane where we kicked the crap out of them. I mean, UNC only lost to a SEC powerhouse in UGA, a Duke team that is better than their record, an NC state team that is going bowling...

I'm sorry I can't even say this with a straight face. What the actual frack, ACC? Did you just cast votes based on preseason rankings? Evans led his team to a better in conference record. We averaged a 16 point victory in conference play compared to UNC's high powered offense pulling off an average margin of less than a field goal. We averaged better margins of victory against shared opponents. Every indicator says that we would beat UNC again no matter the conditions. No respect...

These are individual awards voted on by media, not team awards. Average margin of victory is a bad measure of offensive output considering that relies on your defense to get stops to drive it up. And besides the criteria for these things are unclear, is it supposed to be best player? Than I'd take Trubisky over Evans every day of the week but Ford should be on 1st team. But if its stats then Switzer is the right call over Ford but Evans should be over Trubisky

What a joke.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Now, now... think of some of these as participation trophies while the winners get to go to Orlando.

Wasn't Augie Conte arguably our worst starting OL, these teams are a joke.

Augie was a total liability in both run protection and pass protection. His idea of blocking, regardless of run or pass, is simply anchoring his feet and bench pressing his defender...it's terribly ineffective and goes to show that no one that votes in this actually takes time to watch 12 games of film for every player and every team.

Also Joey Slye leads the ACC in kickoffs AND kicker scoring, but the #7 kicker from Wake got the 1st team nod

Hi, my name is Joey Slye and I set an ACC record for field goals in a single game and can count on one hand the number of kickoffs that have been returnable and I'm only good enough to warrant honorable mention.

Probably has to do with going 1-6 beyond 40+ on the season.

you're right. He should have taken some reps at MLB to increase his presence.

Played MLB in high school. Dude loves to hit.

Devil's advocate, Weaver was 6/10 from the same range and had a long of 46 while Slye had a long of 47 and 27 more points scored than Weaver. But I think the right call on kicker was made there just so WF got a first teamer.

FUEL.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

.

1. More Hoos (1 acc win, awful team, terrible stats on both sides of the ball, crushed by VT easily) than Hokies on the first team is a flat crime and invalidates this shit list.

2. A glorified 5'07 punt returner that shrunk against VT and any other good defense over Isaiah Ford at WR is an absurd joke.

Switzer had more yards and catches than Ford. Had 200 yards against Pitt. 153 against FSU. 177 against NC State. Nc States defense is legit. FSU finished 18th in defense at S/P+ despite people saying it was awful

Awards are great, but does it really matter? I'm sure the players are focused on one big award that they play for on Sat night.

One could argue that the awards could sway more recruits than a conference championship. Do you want to play for a team with a workman mentality that can win, but no one really shines or play on a team where you'll be featured and scouts will notice you because you are All Conference (looking at you, LOLUVa)? I'm not saying it's either or, but in the hypothetical where it is, I can see a 17 year old wow'd by a school consistently cranking out All-ACC at his position.

Personally, I don't really buy that. I think as a whole we have a good number of names on the list.

Evans has had a hell of a year, but the ACC is stacked at QB.

I'm not saying he's first team. I'm saying his body of work is better than Trombonesky's and these awards are supposed to honor the better player at the position. They don't differentiate between pro-style and dual threat, so I think they should take results into account since that is more likely to reflect the QB's play than trying to figure if passing yards and rushing yards are comparable.

I hear ya. No argument there. Pre season hype and publicity probably plays a huge part.

Isaiah Ford not first team?

We swarm

He was 4 points off from Switzer. It was damn close. Williams and Etta-Tawo 100% deserve it however.

The fact that UVa got any first teamers is a joke.

They got 3

This is my school
This is home

Why is that a joke? All three are excellent players. All three would start for any team in the ACC.

The joke is that all three will be gone after this year and that 2-10 was the best they could do with them.

"All three would start for any team in acc". Not convinced after watching them for several years . Blanding is overrated and over hyped and was beaten badly by Phillips and Ford last Saturday and by Hodges last year. Also looked timid to initiate contact .Don't know about other safeties in acc ,but would take Clark over Blanding. Brown would not be a de at VT, but a dt and would not start, maybe 4th team. Lol does have a decent punter, he gets a lot of practice.

georgebd

You should take Blanding over Clark.

We aren't talking about Brown, he wasn't all ACC. It's Blanding, Kiser and Conte.

And the fact that all 3 were defensive players after we just hung 52 on them.

More fuel to Evans Heisman run next season, which begins this Saturday.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Unless Evans can develop a consistent touch on his deep throws, I would be very surprised to see him deep into the late season conversation.

Ring Design Chair

Would bet he improves on that this offseason. Look at the stats he's putting up right now and imagine if he is able to develop a consistent deep ball. Now that's a scary thought (for VT opponents of course.)

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I legitimately think that if Evans can end this season on a high note, he has a shot at the Heisman next year.

Yep and he'll generate preseason dark horse buzz as well.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I really don't see much to be upset about. Sure, they don't know a good VT OG from a bad VT OG. And 4 of FSU's 5 starting OL were honored, after they had a legendarily bad OL this year.

But the Evans call was a tough one, everyone has been talking on twitter all week about how strong the QB'ing is in the ACC. Besides the four discussed here, Kaaya, Francois, Thomas (who had a sneaky good year), Finley (led ACC in completion % I think), Peterman (who was on fire down the stretch) and Dungey all had ACC-worthy seasons in other years. All of these guys could would have been 2nd team All-SEC behind Hurts. But guess what? Probably on Evans, Francois, Finley and Dungey will return next season.

But Switzer is a really good player. Ford only had one TD in the last 6 games I believe. Williams went nuts down the stretch. The Syracuse guy compiled all year.

Bucky probably didn't get a lot of TE votes because he didn't play TE. How many people just didn't vote for him out of principle?

Slye is a good kicker, but he's flawed. I don't know how good other kickers are, but I sure as hell don't feel secure when Slye steps up to a big kick anymore.

Booker should have had a lot more votes, he had more TFL than any interior DL in the country by like 5. He was dominant.

Yeah I completely agree. I definitely feel like we deserve a few more guys on the first-team, but the ACC was really deep this year at a few different positions. The ACC has historically been bad at naming all-conference O-lineman so I'm not worried about that. I think Evans is better than Trubisky, but I also understand why Trubisky got the nod.

The ACC doesn't have some grudge against VT, and we are falling into the biggest fan stereotype when we spout that kind of nonsense.

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

im not as mad about that as i am the fact that uva (!!!!!) got 3 first teamers....i mean really?

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

It seems absurd because of how bad they are, but that's been their issue all year. You essentially have two guys destined for an NFL career on defense, and then a bunch of guys who would struggle to make the roster on any other ACC team. That leads to those two great players standing out even more than they would on a decent team because they are the only ones making any plays and compiling great stats.

Blanding is a former 5-star recruit who lived up to all the hype. Kiser is a Bruce Taylor type of guy who is just all over the field.

Also Conte really is the best punter in the ACC.

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

Agreed, which is why I enjoyed Blanding getting worked on Saturday. It's not often for him to have a game like he did Saturday but he's had some rough games against VT in his career.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

We're talking about the same ACC media who picked the Hokies to finish forth in the Coastal at the beginning of the season, right?

Let's Go

HOKIES

These fuckers are jealous because "Virginia Tech wasn't supposed to win the Coastal Division this season." It's the only explanation.

I agree with Joey's position, he definitely has a CRAZY strong leg but his accuracy on field goals is average on mid range and questionable at best from beyond 45. However, the fact (like so many other TKP'ers before me have mentioned) that they have Conte listed above Teller is absurd. That's false. Wrong. They lost all credibility with that pick alone IMHO. Give me Evans over Trubisky any day of the week. Evans beat Trubisky head-to-head and lead his team further. And yes Ford didn't have as many TD's the last few weeks, but he was still crazy good. He's better than Switzer, no ifs ans or buts on that one. They done screwed this list all up.
