OT: Friday Afternoon amusing reading

I've never heard of this story, so its new to me.

"The view from Texas is unequivocal: Officials there wasted little time pinning the Longhorns' 28-10 Sugar Bowl loss to Virginia Tech on Weaver, whose true identity was discovered on the very eve of the Dec. 31 game."

I was there. They took a first half lead and then we proceeded to amp up the D and kick their butts in the second half. Their team didn't seem dispirited in any way, we were just the better team and they weren't prepared for our defensive vigor. They didn't know who the hell we were, boasted a celebrated backfield, and couldn't imagine losing to the nobodies from Southwest Va. We beat them because we were tougher, meaner, and just the all 'round better team. My lasting vision of the game was seeing the lunch pail on the bench as the clock ran out. Man, what a season, what a game!

we proceeded to amp up the D

So is that what you called it?

"Exit light..."

First trip to New Orleans, great music, great drinks, great food, great game. The whole experience started strong and amped up until we got back to Blacksburg. Yeah, amped up is what I called it.

Old man here, but it's hard to put it into context....VT was not on the map. We, on the national map, were nothing, and Univ. of TEXAS was the shit and was reaching down to even be in the same stadium as VT.......And then we kicked their asses straight up.

Glorious!
Preach it, brother fish.

I was making a subtle joke about "the D" but perhaps it was a bit too subtle :) Glad VT had passionate fans throughout the rise. I didn't become familiar with VT until '99 when my sister started in school there.

"Exit light..."

Was your sister's name Michael V.? Because that's the same time I became familiar with VT football.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Many VT fans rose to attention that night.

They couldn't handle the amped up D and the D vigour!

Let's Go

HOKIES

wow, if that happened at UNC, the NCAA would come down on the chess club with the death penalty...

I remember we got home from a holiday trip to Iowa just in time to watch the game. I expected to lose a tough game, but was pleasantly surprised. Great win!

Is this a true story???

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

They had the BMW backfield that year. Don't remember their names but who cares. I do remember almost feeling sorry for the QB because he was looking around pre-snap wondering which guy was going to hit him next. I did say almost. It was awesome. Fuck Texas!

I hope you only mean the university and not my awesome state !

No worries just the school. I have been to TX several times and have enjoyed all the trips. On a side note, I was in Dallas the March following this game and had stuck a VT hat in my bag. This was back in the day when Bass Pro had not expanded much so I went over to Grapevine to check that store out. I was getting some weird looks and finally figured out that it was my hat.

The sugar bowl results aside, that was a real interesting read. It could never happen today, but quite amazing he got to Texas and he was an awesome leader by all accounts.

I read they are going to do a 30 for 30.

What's
Important
Now

Wow, this article takes me back a few years! I was a sophomore in college, and my brother had started his first job that year in SC. He bought us tix to the game, and we drove from SC to NO (and back in an 11 hour rainstorm). I don't think we'd ever been to a state west of Tennessee, so we were shocked and confused when we drove by the Superdome and realized the game started an hour earlier than the time on our ticket...time zones, they'll get after ya! We entered as the Texas band was going up the escalators, and I'm thinking holy shit, they have more people in their band than I had in my hometown. They were all talking smack, and we'd heard Corso and ESPN say all month that we had no chance and didn't belong in the Sugar Bowl. Professors had actually encouraged students to email ESPN in protest, which started the whole love/hate thing with Corso and added a layer of statisfaction to the rental car lightning strike in 2000. I also remember the Ron Weaver story as well. It was a pretty hot topic at the time. We go down 10-0 early, and we're thinking it's gonna be a long night. Then Bryan Still returns a punt for a touchdown and it was all Hokies the rest of the game. Torrian Gray had a pick in that game too. The younger generation wasn't around or doesn't remember these days, but this was the game that really put VT on the map. Our biggest accomplishments before this game were beating NC State in the Peach Bowl and Indiana in the Independence Bowl. In fact, we lost the first two games of this 1995 season, then beat Miami at home before winning out. I remember the Texas band and all of their fans leaving the stadium, and humbly and graciously telling us that we had a heck of a team. This game also cemented VT fans as a great fanbase who travels extremely well, which is a big reason we received the at-large bid to the Sugar Bowl in 2011. Thanks for sharing the article. Reminds me that I'm getting old, but brings back great memories!
