MOUNT RUSHMORE OF VT BASKETBALL

Since the Mount Rushmore of Football thread got a lot of good conversation I thought we could have one for hoops.

Who is your top 4?

For me, it's Dell Curry, Bimbo Coles, Malcolm Delaney, and Zach LeDay. I know ZLD may not be a conventional choice, but if Buzzketball goes to the heights we expect it to, it was built on the backs of guys like LeDay.

I have a feeling that Buzz and some of his players will eventually earn a spot.

Zabian Dowdell over Delaney or LeDay for me.

Ace Custis all day!
Dell, Bimbo, Malcolm, and Ace.

Was going to add Ace Custis. He was THE man during those years and a great guy.

I came here to make sure Ace Custis was mentioned.

And I could prob switch Bristow for Malcolm...

Yeah Delaney isn't close for me. I'd put Dowdell, Gordon, E.Green or Washington all above him. Delaney could score but his teams always disappointed.

The number of VT offers to him is the same number of times he thinks we landed on the moon.

Biggest recruiting fail in Tech sports history. Don't @ me.

I know there's a little more to the story, but every time I see Seth Greenburg on ESPN and feel bad for the way things ended for him at Tech, I think about what a miss this was and feel slightly less sorry.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

And then I hear him try to break down a VT game and the bitterness boils to the front...and I don't feel the least bit sorry for kicking him down the road.

Yep. I'd surmise he's a pretty shitty poker player.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Nope. What were his top offers again?

Winthrop and VCU. Don't care. We passed up on him for 1 guy that never even made it to Tech for academic reasons, another that never stepped on the floor, and Lewis Witcher. It's not like he was a nobody. We recruited him and then asked him to walk on for a year, redshirt, and then go on scholarship. If the son of possibly your program's best player ever is semi-decent, give him a scholarship over the 3-star that might not even make it to school. Also, of course my comment is more out of hindsight. Still stand by my comment and Greenberg never coming out and saying "My bad" might be what really drives it.

Basketball isn't football you can't just offer anyone.

Our signees from that year say otherwise. Curry was a 3 star and Dell Currys son. If I have to pick an "anyone" I'd go with him.

15 Straight

No even mid top team offered him. So Seth should have just taken a chance on a kid who hasn't shown anything?

Many fans will never get over it so there's essentially no point in trying. However, most of the information in StineyDraw's posts is verifiably wrong. Curry was in the class of 2006. VT signed one recruit that year- Nigel Munson, a 4* and top 100 national recruit. At the time Munson was the 2nd highest rated commitment VT had ever gotten (for the internet recruiting ranking service era).

As you noted, we made Steph Curry a better offer than any other ACC or major conference school. A coach can keep a scholarship for an Alden Smith when there are 85 football scholarships to go around, but it's a different story for basketball with only 15 scholarships.

The irony is especially rich considering TKP has continuous theads with people lamenting that our coaches can't sign entire classes of 4/5* recruits, yet most VT fans can't resolve the Steph Curry situation when the coach opted to sign a recruit ranked 153 spots higher than Curry.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Got my recruiting classes mixed up by a year. My bad. Glad the Munson signing worked out though. Put him on the Mount Rushmore too for the one year he stayed at Tech.

So you have a device that can see into the future? Every major coach missed out on steph and would have taken Munson.

It should be noted that he was all-conference in Charlotte while winning 3 conference titles and All-State his senior year.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Yep. Steph had a grand total of zero scholarship offers to major conference schools. He lived in Charlotte, and not one of Duke, UNC, NCSU or Wake considered him worthy of an offer. We at least offered him a walkon spot, which no other major program did. He went to Davidson because they were one of the only schools who offered a scholarship, because they're the kind of school who cleans up on the crumbs after the big boys have their pick.

It really is major revisionist thinking based purely off how good he actually became to think we missed on him. He just wasn't good enough in high school to warrant an offer. It would have been pure nepotism to put that offer out, and probably one that would have had us fans ripping Greenberg for taking a bad player based on name alone.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

This is The Key Play right? So obviously yes I know more than every coach and completely ignore the benefit of having hindsight.

I would completely understand mistaking the recruiting class year if the date was the only issue, but the narrative you created was based on a different year's recruiting class, which negates your entire premise (and in a way actually ends up supporting Greenberg's decision).

In 2006 we had one scholarship and used it to sign Nigel Munson, a 4* top 100 national recruit out of DeMatha (a powerhouse high school basketball program that was ranked #4 in the nation at the time). Taking Curry over Munson would equivalent to our football program saying, "Hey Khalan Laborn, I know you want to commit to us but we can't accept you because we have to take Cole Beck." VT was going to have a lot more scholarships available the next year, which coincides with Greenberg's offer to put Curry on scholarship after his first season. So in actuality, Greenberg was willing to give Steph a scholarship over many of the guys you claimed "we passed up on him for."

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Hey Cole Beck could still end up being one hell of a running back.

Lewis Witcher

It worked out pretty well for him in the end. Who knows if it would have ended the same way if he came to VT?

I think it should just be a gigantic carving of Jeff Allen and Zach LeDay standing over top of a UVA player who just got knocked into the next millennium off of a legal screen high-fiving each other and scowling.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Ace, Dell, Bimbo, Bristow

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This is the answer, there are 4 retired jerseys in the rafters. That is for all intents and purposes the Mt. Rushmore of VT Basketball.

I was about to say this, just look at the 4 jerseys hanging in the rafters.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Bimbo Coles
Ace Custis
Dell Curry
Charlie Moir

Although, Buzz is already coming close to taking Moir's spot. I also had a tough time deciding between Ace and Bristow for their spot. The other 2 are absolute locks.

As a Roanoke College alum, leg for the great Charlie Moir

Steph Curry Montrezl Harrell Seth Curry Dorian Finney Smith

okay, now for a not sad one. I feel pretty good putting Buzz up there. Maybe you think it's a hot take but he's got us consistently good in a sport where consistent success traditionally evades us. That's good enough for me thus far.

As far as players...Deron Washington, Dell, Erick Green. with lots of little hills for Jeff Allen, Seth Allen, LeDay, Carlos Dixon, Dowdell, etc.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Should just be a giant statue of Deron Washington teabagging paulus with Dell, Bimbo and Buzz looking on in awe.

I like the LeDunk pick, he's one of my most favorite recent players for sure. Nice to see him being mentioned!

I'm actually working on a Funko Pop Figure of him for an Xmas present.

Oooh! Would love to see some pics of these if you have recent ones.

"It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days".

I'll be posting a bunch of pics over on the photo board shortly after Xmas and everything is confirmed as delivered. Most are Xmas presents so I don't post pics until they arrive to their destination in good shape...anything is possible with package delivery around the holidays.

Vernell "Bimbo" Coles would be my Washington, Sensibaugh would be my Jefferson, Custis would be my Lincoln, and Delaney would be my Teddy Roosevelt

I think a better exercise would be to pick an all-time starting 5, which is a fun exercise for every school. Based on the best versions of those players in college. VT for me: Coles, Delaney, Curry, Custis, Bristow.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

My dad still talks about the year he played. At Duke, when he came into the game, the crazies started the "stick to football" chant. Was not a good game. At Tech, he actually played decent and the student got the "just like football" chant. Makes him laugh every time.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

The game at VT he drew a foul that eventually led to a momentum shifting 4 point play (made the first, missed the second, but got his own rebound, dished it out for an assist on a 3). Key contributor in our eventual first of many wins over Duke since we joined the conference.

The Shannon pull is a story that shows how different college athletics were back then, when it made more sense for a professor to resign as head basketball coach to focus on his tenured career at Virginia Tech.

Y'all are way too young. Gotta make room for Dale Solomon on the mountain. Best inside scorer we've ever had.

I was waiting for someone to remember Solomon. Wayne Robinson was a helluva power forward back in the day as well.

Yep for Solomon, and more love for Bristow than is being shown. And yes, that means that, like Bandit, I am on the more mature (i.e., older) end of the spectrum.

Yep, me too. Basketball was a lot of fun in the olden days, too.

Buzz, Dell, and reserve spots for this years ACC POY and national championship game MVP.

Dell Curry #1 hands down, he was that awesome WITHOUT an NCAA three point line.
Bimbo & Ace are 2/3 interchangeable, one is an olympian and the other an all American.
The last spot should go to Bonnie Henrickson, give buzz time, but you would be hard pressed to say that she is not the best basketball coach in VT history.

Curry, Bimbo, Dale Solomon, and Bristow. Honorable Mention for Les Henson (anyone remember the last minute buzzer beater to beat FSU) and Page Moir. Gotta show some love for Page. #OldSchool

Chris Ellis, who was there when I attended(graduated in 1969). Ellis was too flashy a player for his coach; but he was awesome to watch. I don't think he could palm the ball; but he was a wizard as a ball handler and passer. One of my favorite plays was when he would come down the court on a fast break, fake a behind the back pass by trapping the ball against his wrist; and then pull the ball back and fake the defender out of his underwear and lay the ball in for an easy 2 points. And he did this whether Tech had numbers on the break or whether it was 1 on 3. We also made a run in the tourney during his career, winning 2 games and losing 1 in 1967.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.
