And the Rajun Cajuns open bowl season scoring with a 38 yd TD run

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I've watched a few ULL games this season and they are great at running the ball. Frustrating that we can't seem to figure it out ourselves.

Another invaluable tool for keeping up with televised games throughout the season has been This little guy.

Thats friggin sweet! Nice share. Merry Christmas from u to us!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Though not an FBS game, the field at Eastern Washington makes me do this:

Is that the field that looks like it's in grey scale, or the obnoxious red field?

That's the red one.

I remember it was grey and red alternating every 5 yards when they first implemented it, but apparently that wasn't obnoxious enough, so they went straight red shortly thereafter.

Lindenwood has the alternating red/grey. Eastern Wash is straight red, and has always been I believe.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

That Alcorn State/NC A&T game was pretty sweet. Lots of back and forth after it got going.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching N.C. A&T beat ECU early in the season. Today, my husband thoroughly enjoyed watching their cheerleaders. 😂😂😂

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

That's why I watched ASU - FSU today.

I am horrified to learn Raycom Media has a bowl game. Haven't we suffered enough with their sports broadcasting over the years?

Ending of the Camelia bowl was a good watch. Ga. Southern drove down to kick a field goal as time expired for the win. Ga Southern went 2-10 last year. This year they went 10-3 and won a bowl. Watch the emotion of those young men and the coach and then tell me these games are 'meaningless'.

Run to Win. Pass To Score
Josh Jackson on Ricky Walker - ““He is the captain of this team, He’s the leader. He’s the bell cow, the Pail Holder.“

MTSU loves to false start. They have 5 or so un the first quarter. Once it was on the entire line.

I can't believe Belk took UVA, even with their final ranking in the conference. They will surely be sorry with the Hoos' attendance.

Why? It makes the most sense, they are the only team in which their fans would buy a new blazer from belk to watch the game in

This is actually not a bad sales ploy. Your used Belk Bowl ticket is a coupon for like 20% off of anything argyle

Scar has a direct route to Charlotte (1.5 hr in a straight line), and send a ton of their alumni there. Attendance will be solid based on SCar's inclusion alone.

Of the teams they had access to, UVA would provide the best attendance from the ACC side (in theory).

GT doesn't travel well. No one ever wants Pitt. Miami fans don't really get up for the games unless they think they bak. And despite their geographic proximity, Duke probably had fewer seats filled in their last few games than UVA had fans at their spring festival.

OMG. To the commentator at the New Orleans Bowl: Yes, you should get Etouffe. Don't worry about what it is.

Marshall has looked really good in the first quarter. Hopefully they can keep it up!

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Yup. Makes that W over them look even better

Doc Holliday has won 6-straight (every one they've gone to under him) bowl games at Marshall. Impressive.

There were a lot of high level donors that wanted him at wvu after RichRod left.

Congrats to Marshall in the Gasparilla bowl. I was very happy to see them win after doing us a solid and scheduling a 12th game.

I originally had USF in the pool, then changed it when I realized that they had lost 5 straight. Marshall all the way.

Well, I didn't get a chance to change my pick after I learned that FIU's QB was out, and they drop the opening kickoff. This might be it for my perfect record.

Can we hire the guy(s) calling plays at Memphis? /s

Edit: Can we hire the guy(s) calling plays at Wake Forest? /s

Is it basketball season yet?

Memphis 28-10 Wake Forest with 11 mins left in the 2nd. #goACC

I don't know what Wake just uncorked but it's some gooooood stuff.

Wake nearly Mike Londoned themselves by not taking timeouts with Memphis in scoring range.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Holy cow, this Memphis-WF game is entertaining.

That QB and WR for WF are making some plays!

Is it basketball season yet?

Memphis defense is horrible. I've watched three Memphis games this season and they've blown double digit leads in all three.

To be fair, they lost all 3 starters on the Dline by the start of the second quarter and Wake's OC realized that he had a bulldozer under center that would make the backups look like middle schoolers.

Also, that 3 second long mesh was throwing me off watching. I can only imagine what a rusher would think at field level.

Also this is yet another lesson in taking the points. Memphis has a chip shot field goal for a win right now if they had taken the XP last time instead of going for two.

Wow!

Is it basketball season yet?

RIP my bowl pick em, but at least the ACC got a win.

Unlike Da U, Army football may in fact be bak!!

Good for those kids, that was an amazing beat down and will end the season ranked top 20

Me thinks army should've gotta a better bowl opponent cause they embarrassed s bad Houston team but as always go army beat navy!

I had that same exact thought.

Damn. The Buffalo Troy game was amusing. Buffalo was leading at halftime. During the third quarter they lost the lead, retook the lead, and came within seconds of losing the lead.... *without taking a snap*.

Yep, zero snaps in the third quarter for Buffalo.

Man glad we dont have to play this kid next year, he is a stud would be a matchup nightmare for us!

They still have a some good wr's, if their bowl game is any indication. Thank goodness Bachman is graduating, along with Dortch's early departure. Surrait has been productive for them.

Wake Forest is a team we should never be losing to. Simple as that. They have a G5 quality roster.

I've heard the same said of ODU, JMU, WF (when we lost 6-3, in double OT) and Temple (an epically bad Temple team at that).

At some point we need to drop this arrogance and realize that we can lose to anyone, especially if we take them lightly.

If * ratings of players on the roster were that legit a measure of quality, UCF wouldn't have played 2 full seasons undefeated, nor would BSU have had it's incredible run when Pedersen was there. Nor would WF have ever had a team that's good enough to win the ACC, let alone put multiple players in the NFL.

Clawson has done a very good job developing players and implementing an offense that is very capable. I stand by my statement that WF has some legit WR's, even after Dortch decided to go pro, but I'm glad that we don't have to face Dortch, in 2019.

Anecdotal examples like UCF (who is filled with P5 transfers and bounceback players, they have multiple former Bama defensive backs in their secondary) don't disprove the observable truth that * ratings matter and blue-chip athletes make for better football teams on a very consistent basis. We also beat the brakes off of that fluke WF team that won the ACC in their own house late in November. That was also the one time they have competed for an ACC title legitimately in my lifetime.

It's not arrogance to say we should always beat those teams, we SHOULD always beat those teams if we want to be as solid of a team as we pretend to be. If you want VT to be respected we have to stop losing those games point blank period. Sure they have some good players, even G5 teams have a couple solid players, but we have as many or more "legit receivers," and better athletes all over the field. Does that mean we will never lose to lower ranked teams? Of course not, but we should expect to win those games if we are actually a solid P5 program. The problem isn't that we occasionally lose to teams like that, everyone except Alabama does, but that we lose to 2-3 of those a season now and we are way too okay with making excuses for losing to these joke ass ACC teams that have bottom of the barrel P5 talent.

Let me put it this way, we will NEVER make the playoffs, and we will compete for ACC championships about once every 15 years if we are the kind of team who has to make excuses about how that Wake Forest team we lost to was "lowkey underrated", "actually pretty good," and "Clawson really knows how to coach up those low rated players."

I never said bringing in better talent doesn't matter. I'm simply pointing out that there have been a number of good teams with "G5 talent". Your statement said VT should never lose to a team with G5 talent. I simply countered by pointing out that there have been some very good teams at the G5 level and the P5 team that you state has G5 talent, has been quite good at times. VT can and has lost to just about any team. Your statement isn't reality.

As far as making the play offs, I'll wait until we actually bring in top 20 recruiting classes on a regular basis AND play competitively against the likes of Clemson, before I get my hopes up that we'll compete for a play off spot. How we fare vs WF in any given year has zero to do with those expectations. OU is in the play off in spite of the fact that they needed OT to beat Army (and should have lost in regulation). OU is in the play offs based on how they've played other good teams.

Edit: One more point.

Given what you saw from VT, this year are you saying that your confident that we'll dominate WF, next year? I'm not. A 5' 10" QB, who's quitting football to go to seminary school, along with some OK WR's lit up our D. WF's QB is a lot better as are there WR's.

Shoot, forgot to factor in the huge bump BC's offense would receive now that Leoffler's gone

I would be beyond livid if this happened at a bowl game that I was at. Since the game started, they won't give refunds for the tickets. Also, the fans came to Texas from Massachusetts and Idaho and those are no small trips.

yeah I agree! they are basically giving all the fans of non playoff games a big kick in the balls saying yours games don't matter. bad enough weve got kids (players) acting like they don't matter. now the NCAA is co signing. why would anyone spend any money or why would any kid play in any bowl games that aren't the playoffs at this point.

I paid thousands of dollars all told to fly from Boston to Dallas, get field level tickets, and get a nice hotel room and all I got was 10 minutes of football and this T-shirt.

The Cal/TCU game ending is a mercy. I can't remember watching a more garbage game.

Wake in 2014 & Rutgers in 2012 come to mind..

Honestly, the only thing I remember from the 2014 Wake game is Frank's 0-0 celebration... not sure if that is indicative of my mental state during the game or the lack of memorable moments it provided.

Don't kid yourself. It's both.

Duke breaking this thing open now

Lol Duke is up by 22, and they still out there running trick plays. I love bowl games.

Haha. Miami stinkin it up to start the game. Love it.

They're only down 14-0, a little over 3 min into the game.

There's still time, for them to be down 100-0.

... But we lost to them so..

You don't see a negative passer rating every day.

Wisconsin played 60 minutes of good football. It wasn't exciting but they controlled the game on both sides of the ball.

Miami... Well... They just didn't play well. Their QBs are horrible and I think their defense may be overrated.

I wonder what the hell is going on at UM. Tons of transfers.

Richt was high on a lot of hokies' lists when Frank retired. I wonder how they would feel now if he was hired here instead of Fuente....

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

TBH, probably not much worse than we're feeling right about now anyway. He and Fuente each came in and had immediate success with his predecessor's players before suffering a fair amount of attrition on one side of the ball and putting up a relative stinker of a season, while promising to improve next year.

Yeah, okay. I'm sure the mood around here would be about the same as it is now if Bud Foster left for another job and a bunch of recruits decommitted right before the early signing day... Give me a break

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

At least Miami had a relatively drama-free path to their bowl game. We just had our objectively worst season since 1992, by losing to ODU and getting blown out by ND, GT, Pitt, and Miami, and requiring an unlikely comeback against UVA just to set up a 12th game against Marshall to extend the bowl streak. Maybe we've cooled off a bit by now, but a few weeks ago this board was going ballistic at how awful of a season we were having.

How was that comeback unlikely? It was against UVA.

This aged well

Charlie Brewer has moves just like his older brother

VT '10, Born & Raised in the 804.
Rockin the Bakken.
“When life deals you lemons, pick ‘em up and chuck ‘em at Gritty.”

Mike Brewer's little brother is currently QB for Baylor in the Outdoors Texas Bowl.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Watching the Baylor game just reminds me how many good coaches were available when beamer retired, Matt Rhule has done a good job picking up the pieces, Matt Campbell has done well at Iowa St., Chad Morris had SMU some what competitive, PJ Fleck has done well at Minnesota. Fuente has done well at VT.

I feel like Minnesota is by far the best job out side of VT. And I keep feeling like those other coaches have a better places to be.

Charlie is slinging it tonight

And to think.... Miami's offensive coaching staff is the one sticking around after tonight.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

You just hate to see it...

Um did you watch that game? You think some one wants to hire the offensive staff?

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Miami has never won anything significant without large scale cheating, which Richt is apparently not willing to do.

I despise da U as much as anyone, but I gotta call BS on this. The Schnellenberger and JJ teams were legit very good teams and no one has been able to produce any real evidence of small scale cheating, let alone large scale.

NCAA would love to void everything da U did in the 80's and 90's. The fact that they've done nothing means there isn't any credible evidence that Miami cheated.

As far as I'm concerned, it just means JJ was super good at covering his tracks.

Well, that's certainly one possibility.

The other may be that there was a lot of talent in southern FL, that wasn't being identified (or wasn't being recruited due to off field shenanigans, that JJ was willing to over look). They certainly feed a lot of players into the NFL, in that time period. Players who had long careers too.

All valid points, though I'd argue southern Florida wasn't much if a secret even back in the 80's.
I certainly don't have any proof that Jimmy Johnson was taking part in any recruiting shenanigans, and I'm not trying to pass my opinion off as fact, but sometimes you just get a feel about people.
If I knew JJ was was cooking my quarter pounder I wouldn't be able to shake the feeling that it'd been spit on.

Oh JJ is/was a slimeball, no argument. I'm simply talking about results and the lack of NCAA trouble, when the NCAA had a burning desire to shut down Thug U's team. Heck Butch Davis got around the scholly restrictions by using track scholly's for several WR's & DB's. The next year, the NCAA outlawed the practice with the current hierarchical rules for schollys (if an athlete is on scholly & plays FB, the scholly counts against FB totals, if he/she plays BB, then if it's not already a FB scholly, it's a BB scholly and all others are equally 3rd tier).

If UVA beats USCe does Will Muschamp lose his job? Follow up question, are any coaches coaching for their job this bowl season?

tons of assistants are coaching for their jobs. App st, temple, GT all coaching for their jobs.

Obviously Miami's offensive staff wasnt coaching.

Mark Richt if he won't fire his son.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I do not think Muschamp gets fired if he loses to UVA. 7-5 with an injury list that rivals our attrition list, and actually making Clemson sweat at times this year instead of the previous two years has gotten him to safety for this season.

Agreed, and if Muschamo was going to get fired it would have happened already. Bowl losses don't get people fired.

So with the CFP starting tomorrow does anyone really care about the rest?

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I'm pretty interested in our game, Georgia Texas, Michigan Florida, LSU UCF, and hopefully a nice little Hoo meltdown in the Belk Bowl.

Is it weird that I am rooting for UVA to beat South Carolina? I feel like UVA being better lifts the whole states perception and honestly I feel like we go up against USCe for more recruits. Plus we beat UVA this year

Very weird, and wrong

Yeah, that's just plain wrong.

The only game I care about it our own. I have no interest in any of the other games except to maybe have something on when I'm bored. I really could not possibly care less about the playoff. Bama and Clemson don't interest me in the slightest.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I don't really care about the CFP. Only question is does OU or Clemson win. Only 2 or 4 seeds win the championship.

It's college football. After the CFP Final, we'll have 8 months without anything except spring practice.

Yes, I'm interested in all of the remaining games.

Regular season: VT beats Duke, Marshall, and loluva, VT loses to Miami and GT.

Bowl season: Miami, and GT lose big. Duke wins big and Marshall wins rather handily. So naturally loluva stomps the Gamecocks?

And because the BC game never happened I guess it doesn't even fit in the equation.

BC was winning when the game was canceled.

Agreed, he's a really good QB.

Babers has done a pretty remarkable job at Cuse. He took his licks the first two years, sprinkling in a few good upsets here and there, but he's recruited some great athletes and really has them rolling. A 10 win season in year 3 considering how bad Cuse was is really impressive.

The question is how long will babers be at Syracuse?

I'll be surprised if he isn't extended through around 2023-2024 after this season. He'll at least make it through 2021 even if all three of those seasons suck.

Edit: Apparently he's already signed an extension. Details not revealed though, typical private school stuff.

He reminds me of that QB from ECU we beat 64-17 in hopefully our final game against the Pirates.

I guess we beat him so bad he grew a mustache and went into witsec in eastern Washington state.

Well, that's something new! Washington State's receiver and the defender broke the chains/yardage marker. I personally liked the ref announcing that the sticks were repaired and ready for play.

That WVU-Syracuse game was GLORIOUS. All offseason, it was "WVU is making it to the playoff, they're finally beating Oklahoma this season, Will Grier is winning the Heisman, yadda yadda yadda."

Fast forward four months, and they went 8-4 (probably 8-5 had they played NC State), Oklahoma beat them in excruciating fashion, and, not only did Grier not win the Heisman, he also didn't play in the bowl game giving WVU fans a glimpse of what's to come with Jack Allison. Spoiler alert: it's not good.

I don't think I've ever encountered a more delusional fan base than them (although I did see a UVA fan on Twitter say he thinks they're going 11-1 next season with their only loss coming at South Bend). Holgorsen's record since joining the Big 12 is less than impressive, they regularly have recruiting classes ranked in the 40s and 50s, and they run a 3-3-5 on defense for God's sake. Every offseason, though, it's "we're going to the playoff this year."

Growing up a VT fan in WV and then attending Marshall, my hatred for WVU sports runs deep. Any WVU loss is like a VT win for me. Seeing them go 8-4 and ultimately lose in the Camping World Bowl when they thought they could compete for a national championship is like a piece of art that belongs in the Louvre.

Also, their basketball team sucks and probably won't make the NCAA tournament this season. That is all.

This guy hates

I respect your hate, but I think WVU would have boatraced NC State, and probably wins last night with Grier.

I see no way WVU wins on the road at NC State. Their offensive stats are regularly inflated because they play in the Big 12. The combination of Grier, Sills, and Jennings is solid as far the Big 12 goes, but when is the last time they beat someone good? They've never won a non conference game against a ranked team and have a sub-.500 bowl record since joining the Big 12. Their defense is porous. Ryan Finley would have had a field day against them. They do win last night with Grier I think, but they still got manhandled without him. It wasn't really close.

NC State is not good at all this year. With Grier they would have beat State by at least 3 TD's

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

I've gone back and forth on this a lot...right now, I think it's actually better for Virginia Tech if UVa became a legitimate football program. Virginia Tech doesn't have a contentious rival with a passionate football base. I think it would help recruiting if we had a finale game every year that has national relevance. Part of the appeal of going to Michigan/Bama/Texas is playing against OSU/Auburn/Oklahoma.

I don't think we see an Andrew Brown/Quin Blanding/Smoke Mizzell situation ever again otherwise the initial point is moot.

lolUVA winning a game or looking like a legitimate football program will not help our recruiting... they suck and I hope they lose every game in an embarrassing fashion

Agreed. Bronco has UVA heading in the right direction. We'll see next season whether he can sustain momentum or not, and if we can bounce back.

But this troubling VT football season is only compounded by their successes. This will be a long offseason.

Bronco and LOLUVA are what VT used to be. Hard nosed, smart, physical football.

Is it basketball season yet?

Hard, smart, AND tough? Oh no.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I'm not sure about that. It may have some small impact, but I think the appeal of going to Michigan/Bama/Texas/OSU is that they are who they are and are blue blood elite programs.

An instate rival doing well/better than us doesn't help us in any way as a program or with recruiting, just like Clemson winning the natty didn't help us. VT just needs to flat out get better/recruit better and stop wading around in stagnation and promising big things next year. The best thing to help us is to help ourselves first.

UVa only has two players, Perkins and Zaccheus.

How do you leave Zaccheus wide open in the end zone?

I have to admit Perkins has a coolness about him. I actually have them in my bowl pool. They need to lose by 2.

New story on footballscoop.com reports that University of Houston is looking to fire Applewhite and hire Dana Horlgorsen.

Why in the hell would Dana move from a P5 coaching position with a small chance of making it to the CFP to take a G5 position with 0 chance of making it to the CFP? Houston may be able to come up with a little more $ than WVU, but why take a G5 job where 8-4 gets you fired?

We'll fire coaches at 8 and 4

-Houston president Renu Khator

Houston is one of very few G5 teams with enough money and clout to frequently schedule some major opponents, and if everything falls in their favor one year they are probably one of only 2 or 3 G5 teams that have a prayer of a playoff appearance. Which is only slightly worse than where WVU stands (not sure if "WFU" was a typo or a joke at WVU's expense)

It was a typo. Fixed.

Thanks

Houston certainly has the money, but I don't see them getting 4 meaningful P5 teams for the OOC in 1 season, to give them a chance at a CFP appearance, unless we go to 8 teams.

If we go to 8 teams, all bets are off. BSU, UCF and Houston plus a few others would have a shot at getting the play off berth each year and it becomes an easier path than being at a place like WFU (no typo, this time) or possibly even VT, since you wouldn't face the likes of Clemson to get through the regular season.

After complaining about the VT offense (or lack thereof) for most of this season, I'm happy right now that we aren't USCE.

How in the world did USCjr put up 31 on Clemson?

Even Liberty, Ohio and UNC scored 3 TD's (plus) against LOLUVA.

Kind of feeling like I want ND to win this one.

Tired of seeing Clemson v Bama for the national championship. 3 times in the last four years is a little too much.

Plus say what you will about it being good for the ACC but Clemson winning does nothing but help steal recruits from us.

Go Irish.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Same here, screw Clemson. Can't stand them, tired of Clemson and Bama.

I'd say having an ACC team win the championship does benefit the ACC. VT is in the ACC.

We're up against Notre Dame for recruits as often as we're up against Clemson. I'm a LOT more tired of Alabama than I am of Clemson.

We need to root FOR VT, not against every other decent team we run across.

Clemson has proven that you can be the big fish in a little pond and still compete for the natty. Heck, even we were in a position to do so when we were dominating a weak ACC, we just shot ourselves in the foot and collapsed on the big stage. I'm not going to pull for another ACC school to win the natty, VT just needs to get itself in a position to contend for the ACC and win some big games, and we will likely always have a decent shot at the playoff regardless of overall conference perception.

I'd like to see the stats on that. I see more players on Clemson's roster and starting that VT wanted than on NDs.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

I'm going to suggest that we wanted lots of players on either of those teams.

I wouldn't disagree but I think we are in a battle more so with Clemson for players than ND. I'm sure we'd love to have some of the players that OU has but we aren't really in too many battles with them for players.

It's really a matter of proximity. Clemson is more regional than ND.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

It doesn't make the ACC look good, it makes Clemson look good. That's it. They will keep stealing recruits from under our nose because they are elite, and you're actively rooting for them to strengthen that pitch.

One of two possible teams in the final makes the ACC as a whole look better, and it's not Notre Dame.

He is a bit goofy at times, but I can't disagree. I like the coach that we have, but if Dabo could bring in the talent and staff that he has at Clemson, I'd agree. There's a big diff between VT's sports/fb budget and Clemson's, though, so we wouldn't have a DC making $2 mil/yr.

lmfao I wish I could've seen that.

Notre Dame didn't belong on the same field as that Clemson team. Which is sad for us in the near term.

Notre Dame had the 2nd best resume in the country and absolutely deserved to be in the game. I do wish they would join a conference and stop getting preferential treatment, but to say they didn't belong is foolish

13-0 > 12-0. Bama and Clemson had better resumes, so ND is 3rd at best.

Yes beating Pitt makes a huge difference.

Although I would quickly say Georgia was the better team based on the eye test, Notre Dame was absolutely the deserving team. As crazy as it sounds to say, it's also not fair to Alabama to potentially have to play Georgia again in the playoff. They proved themselves and beat them on the field, and it's incredibly difficult to beat any team twice in the same season, especially if they are fairly evenly matched.

I do wonder if tonight's result will put a bad taste for ND in the mouth of the committee though moving forward. I completely agree that for them to get more respect as a legitimate playoff contender, they need to join a conference eventually. Every P5 conference has a 13th game now with the championship, and it's unfair to judge two resumes evenly when one team played another game.

I've heard a lot of claims that UGA passed the eye test better than ND. Through 12 weeks, UGA was blown out by 20 by LSU and the game wasn't that close. ND had 2 5-point W's against mid-level bowl teams. I'm not sure that UGA won the eye test as overwhelmingly as people claim. UGA def won the recruiting rankings vs ND, but recruiting rankings shouldn't be a considered metric when determining who should be in and who should be out.

In the end, UGA lost 2 games, one by blow out. No undefeated P5 team should be excluded, to include them.

I agree that UGA shouldn't be in but it should be noted that they had a much harder schedule than anyone in the final 4. Same as last season.

it's unfair to judge two resumes evenly when one team played another game.

Oh, so that's why UCF hasn't made either of the last 2 playoffs

Lolz. But yeah, unfortunately, I don't see G5 teams getting any real consideration moving forward. This playoff is all about ratings and putting together the heavyweight matchups. ND is the only non P5 school to really have the history and status to get consideration, but I wonder if that will change after today's performance.

Yeah, next time they are 12-0, they will be the #4 seed.

No way in the world that an undefeated ND is left out. I suppose if there are 4 13-0 P5 conf champs, it's possible, but it better be USC (the real one), Texas/OU, Bama/LSU/Auburn/UF and Clemson/FSU/Miami. If you don't have multiple NC's in your history, no way you get in before ND, if ND is undefeated.

I didn't say they didn't deserve to be there.

They just looked like they didn't belong. Key difference

I have this feeling Bama scores 60+. I dont see OU stopping them at all and OU will score enough for Bama to keep their foot on the pedal

haha right! The fact that the call was even made that way is the sole reason that everything, including penalties, should be subject to replay review, or NOTHING should be. Games are won and lost on bad flags all the time and that play just shows how pathetically awful these dudes are at doing their jobs in real-time

Man I'm getting sick of Bama and Clemson in the postseason.

Using /s is for cowards.

The disparity between the top two and everyone else gets bigger every year. Unfortunately, I dont see it changing anytime soon.

Nope. Especially not when we're all tuned into it and discussing in real-time. Ratings rule.

I also think the window for the have-nots to cross into the barrier of the haves may have unfortunately closed. College sports and media coverage are all about the front runners in today's landscape. The days of the underdog may be close to being over.

haha maybe you're right. Well if our new ceiling is beating lolUVA every year and making a random bowl game then we're already there. Enjoy the glory days, boys!

Sounds to me that our ceiling is 12-1 and sneaking into the playoffs just to get destroyed by Bama. We are nowhere close to the ceiling right now.

That window hasnt been opened in 30 years.

It was open for us only 20 years ago. We just didn't jump through in time.

Na Mike Vick was just so fast he ran through the wall.

It's either not over or the window was never open.

This is an observation that has been made for decades. That's not to say it's a bad observation. The one thing that never changes is change.

Alabama and Clemson will be good for years to come (especially Clemson if Dabo stays) but there's no guarantee they stay at the top with that much room between them and the rest.

We're also viewing this through a lens that was clearly scratched by the CFP committee by buying into Big 12 and ND hype. Maybe Georgia really does belong in this thing as incredibly unpalatable as 2 SEC teams in the CFP would be. Who knows, maybe Ohio State also belongs (I can't believe I just typed that). Their D can't be worse than OKs.

This may just look really awful because ND and OSU really don't cut it.

What I'm waiting to see is how Clemson does vs. Bama.

Besides, we're not underdogs. We just haven't reached our full potential. 🤘

Go Hokies!

Alabama and Clemson will be good for years to come (especially Clemson if Dabo stays) but there's no guarantee they stay at the top with that much room between them and the rest.

I agree. F$U should be a case study on how it's possible for blue chip programs to implode. This could happen to Clemson. Hopefully the void can be filled by some outsiders.

I think we are much more likely to win a natty in basketball before we win one in football.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Would have thought you were insane saying that 10-12 years ago, but I would agree now.

Let's just schedule their matchup in September next year so we dont have to sit through a whole season again. 800 other FBS games clearly don't matter.

Holy shit. Jacobs just punched that dude in the face on the way to the score. This OU defense has lived up to its billing 110%

Erm...what defense???

Oh man! STTNG always get a leg from me!

Anyone else hear Bama fans chanting overrated right after OU failed to get that 4th down conversion right before the end of the 1st quarter?

Should be a penalty on the Bama ball carrier there for lowering the head...

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

For all the folks that get upset about how VT would play in big national games, remember this night when #4 got BF'd during the biggest game of the year so far.

Big 12 living up to the billing as paper soft. This is getting humiliating quickly.

Playoffs don't work with a month lay-off in between games. Especially after awards and everything. If you want competitive games, add a scrimmage first, or decrease the time in between games, it removes all relevancy to the season.

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

This could be an argument for expanding the number of teams in the CFP.

Going from 4 to 8 would have the CFP start 12/22. Going to 16 would have it start 12/15. 32 would have it start 12/8 which gives one week between championship weekend and the CFP.

I think 16 would be adequate given it's more than half of the top 25.

So I think you solved two problems. You expanded the play-off and prevented teams from getting rusty.

God this is so fucking boring. Bama/Clemson umpteen and a 127-way race for third place.

Riley didn't trust his defense, and honestly that's not a dumb call.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

It was an impressively aware and overall not bad strategy.

That game was so weird from the 2nd quarter on. Bama defense went to insanely bend don't break mode, while also essentially not rushing the QB at all to try to keep it all in front of them. That mixed with Riley going for every 4th down since the 2nd quarter and playing a strategy where he trusted his defense zero (rightfully so) made for an interesting game. Don't think there is much to learn from this for the NCG though. They won't play Clemson like that at all.

Main takeaway from tonight -- ACC refs still suck.

How many years will the championship be Bama VS Clemson? Over/under 6 of the first 10 years?

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Under... right now it's 3 out of 5, and I highly doubt that they can both keep this going. This is crazy, 4 straight years where they've met in the playoffs.

Unless something changes I see no reason to believe Bama VS Clemson won't be the CG match-up for each year until Saban retires

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

You want to know how College Football dies? When it's the same 2 schools playing for the title every single year. It was already bad enough with the oversaturation of the SEC but now it's just Alabama and Clemson every year. Great for ESPN to talk about and stroke themselves over endlessly, but not the best for the average viewer.

We already are hearing that viewership is on a slow decline, but this kind of same old same old every year is going to drive away average fans. It's a problem the NBA is currently facing, and I could see it develop in college football soon.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I say bring it. College football needs a return to its regional roots.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Sort of regional. The ACC/SEC rivalry is totally regional and has been around a for while which is all the CFP has been for a few years. The PAC-12 and B1G have a long history of rivalries that is not quite regional.

I think there has been an obsession with naming a true national champion but I wonder if that is fading. It's not really as much fun as it sounds.

If the B1G and/or the Pac-12 don't get into this thing more often, the CFP won't last 10 years. These are two conferences that are perfectly happy with calling the Rose Bowl ("The Grand-Daddy of All Bowls") the Natty and letting the rest of the P5 pound sand.

100%. The BCS didn't happen until the P12 and B1G finally agreed to do it. They were the holdout for all of the years that I remember having the discussion of designing an NCG. Neither conference wanted to give up the trip to the Rose Bowl and neither wanted to play a team from a different conference. In the end $ won out.

What you mean to say is, if the B1G and/or Pac-12 don't get into it more often, the CFP will expand so that they can both have guaranteed berths.

Starting to see Saban's side of things here. Let's not expand the playoff, let's reduce it to 1 team and just crown Alabama at the beginning of the season and annex them from college football. Everyone else can play each other for first 2nd place.

I found it hilarious that the coaches interviewed about expanding the playoff were Saban and Kelly. Of freaking course they dont want to to expand, they both have it so good, why make there path to the championship harder for them?

Especially Kelly.

Waho's suck

Just imagine if Oklahoma hadn't spotted Bama fucking 28 points to start the game...

I don't think it felt like spotting them. It seemed like Bama was just rolling over them at will, then let off the gas once they were up so much. Every time throughout the entire game that Bama ran up the middle seemed like it was getting at a bare minimum 6 yards

Bama would have kept playing defense like the 1st quarter and not played prevent for 3 quarters. Silly hypothetical because the game changes on all levels. Games are too dynamic, and also "spotted" seems to make it sound like they were all fluke scoop and scores or something.

Took the over on that Bama game. When I went to bed I knew I had lost the bet. When I checked the score I was surprised that they hit 79. Unfortunately, when I took the over , it was at 79. I know a push is better than losing but it's somehow more infuriating. If only Bama hadn't started burning the clock in the second quarter...

That might not be part of his arrangement with the Dark Lord

All that changes then is that someone replaces Clemson, since Bama will take Dabo.

Why would he go there?

He can actually claim to have built what Clemson has, which is an annual playoff contender.

This. Clemson is on Bama's level and it's 100% Dabo.

I know the alum thing, but when all is said and done that stadium will be named after Dabo. He has all the money and recruiting advantages he needs. Why go be "the next Saban"?

Because he'll have even more of a money and recruiting advantage. And he won't have to contend with Bama, who will certainly find another top-shelf coach to bring in if he doesn't make the jump.

Bama, who will certainly find another top-shelf coach to bring in

You're basing this on how easy it was after Bear retired, right?

I'm basing it off the fact that they have all the money and influence in the college football world, and shouldn't have much trouble courting just about any coach that they want. Yes, it took them a while to find success after Bear Bryant retired, but college football is in a much different place in 2018 than it was in 1982.

They had that when the Bear retired too. Bama was THE program in the south with LSU and Auburn giving them a bit of competition. The only real difference vs today is that Texas was a an actual power. Saban isn't a great fit at Bama, just because he's great at X's and O's. He's a great fit for their culture. Replacing that won't be a trivial effort and definitely not as easy as you suggest.

I'll add:

USC and Texas have had a hell of a time finding a replacement for their last HC that took them to the NCG. They have as much pedigree and money as Bama. They haven't come close to an NCG or CFP game, in the past decade.

Michigan and ND had longer searches and comparable lack of success, though at least Brian Kelly has gotten ND into the playoffs/NCG during his tenure.

Edit: And we don't even want to get into discussing teams like Nebraska.

Nebraska went to a NCG after osbourne retired.

They made it to the NCG after getting blown out by Colorado, as one of the more controversial choices in the history of the BCS. In spite of that blow out loss, they made it into the NCG over Oregon because they were a blue blood. Many were calling for Colorado to be chosen instead of Nebraska too.

How many since then? The point of the discussion is focused on how easy it is to replace a HC at a blue blood program and continue the success. So far, I haven't seen any team do it. Replacing Saban won't be easy. Though, I suppose that if Bama can get Dabo to go there, I guess they may be the 1st to do so (though I have no idea why Dabo would do it).

Yes and Nebraska did an OK job at replacing the man, and while it was a controversial pick, everyone was getting blown out by that Miami team. They did ok, then they decided that Bill Callahan would be better and well here we are, the lesson is Bill Callahan was not a great decision.

lol, no, the lesson is that it's not easy to replace a generational HC, even at a blue blood school.

Fans of literally every other program in the country are saying this today.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

We may not, but someone will. Probably using some method no knows about now or no one takes seriously. Look at how sabermetrics (aka Money Ball) changed baseball.

While watching Bama play with OU, the way a cat plays with a mouse, it dawned on me that outside of Hurts and Tua, I didn't know any of the names of the players on Bama's team. Quinnen Williams has gotten a little coverage, leading up to the game, so I kind of recognized his name. I've actually watched several Bama games and was more impressed with Bama's WR's than Tua or Hurts (it's interesting how having WR's that catch anything that they can get their hands on will make guys like Tua, Murray and Lawerence seem other worldly).

On the other hand, who didn't know the names of Clemson's starters on DL, their starting RB and starting QB?

Off the top of my head, I know and can remember Jerry Jeudy (WR), Najee Harris (RB), and Patrick Surtain II (DB) whom I only remember because his dad played.

Other than that, it's like Saban runs Alabama the same way Bill Belichick runs the Patriots. We only remember the players' names that the coaches allow us to know. lol

You still feeling this way after the game? I wish we were recruiting DL like they are, but A&M just beat them like a cupcake G5 or FCS team. By the end of the third quarter it was clear that NC State is light years away from A&M's level.

This game was a showcase on how silly David Hale's weird spin cycle skills are when he tries to hype up the ACC by their win totals. Win totals are meaningless without context. It would be a struggle for NC State to make a bowl with A&M's schedule this year, and they came into this bowl game with a better record than them.

Feel bad for Miss St, they had a guy wide open in the EZ, Fitzgerald hit him perfectly in the chest but the guy bobbled the ball and eventually bounced it into the air and the Iowa DB who had been clearly beaten ended up getting a lucky interception on what should have been a lead taking TD.

It would fuck up half of the narratives in the college football world.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

They had a first quarter about as bad as how we started against Boise in 2010. They were trying hard to make it tough on themselves, between that shanked punt and the punter catching the snap with his knee on the ground they gifted them great field position twice.

Will be interesting to see if Kirby Smart can inspire his team to turn around and fight back or if they just mail it in after facing this adversity.

So far it looks like they are not responding well. This is clearly not Georgia's best, but it really makes me question their mentality and team leadership to bring this half-assed effort after talking so much leading up to the game.

We have a big enough sample to know Georgia is better than this showing, but this is the second example (LSU) of them not responding well to a bad start to the game.

Uga about to lose to Texas. ... Just as everyone predicted.

Soooo, anyone give a fuck about tonight's game?

Bama win is status quo, Clemson win means we lose even more recruits as they share pretty much all our recruiting grounds and strengthen their grasp on the best talent around us. Also, I live in upstate SC and desperately want to avoid living through another championship offseason here.

What he said^ if they could both lose that'd be cool. I'll watch very not paying attentionly as I do more important things around the house.

The only thing about tonight's game is that it is the last college game until fall. Otherwise who gives a flying fig newton?! If it were any other teams, I would be somewhat interested. I'll have it on, but I'm not happy about it. I had a betting interest, but it was parleyed with NDSU (-14) and so now that that was a push, the payout is significantly less that it was gonna be.

EDIT: seriously, I should have shaved a half point off that NDSU bet that I parleyed with the Clemson ML. Ended up winning at 2.8:1 odds, but it would have been closer to 6:1...
