Frank Beamer 2018 HOF inductee

I guess I'm not TKP'ing hard enough, because I haven't seen any threads under Active Discussions that speak to Coach's 1st ballot induction into the HOF last night. What a great honor! The funny part is that he was 2-8-1 (granted with scholly limitations) in his 6th year, I know college sports are completely different nowadays, but I think he would've taken Fuente's 3rd year, that year, over a record like that. Just goes to show how far patience can take a fanbase. I know there are tons of analytics that are available nowadays that weren't back then, but I think after the effort the guys gave in the last two years, we can ONLY HOPE that we have another long term coach like Beamer already in house. Enough about Coach Fu' though. Congrats to one of the best college coaches ever (if just by personality and longevity). Cheers to you sir!

Hokie Sports article

Beamer won 238 games for his alma mater, seven conference championships — three in the Big East and four in the ACC — and reached the 2000 BCS national championship game. He established a bowl streak, now in its 26th straight season, and a double-digit win streak over rival Virginia. His overall 280-143-4 record ranks sixth among FBS coaches. Loved the video of guys like Ed Reed and Calvin Johnson complimenting him.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Where is this one? I'd love to see it.

Added it above (edit: This one doesn't have Megatron in it, had everyone else you could think of though...lol)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Frank Beamer is what's right with College Football...and college athletics in general. He built a special atmosphere in Blacksburg, not a player mill. That took care of itself. He is the true definition of a Coach, and I'm damn proud to have him as a True Hokie through and through. Thank you Frank. Thank you.

To you from failing hands we throw

The old thread was, well, 11 months old. This new one is good since the formal induction ceremony occurred just recently.

We're all lucky to have been a part of witnessing Coach Beamer build prestige in our football program and by way of success on the football field help take VPI&SU to great heights!!!

Let's Go

Just goes to show how far patience can take a fanbase.

The fanbase was actually calling for him to be fired after that 2-8-1 year. It was the AD at the time that had the patience.

There will never be another Frank Beamer in college football, at least not at the D-1 level. If that 2-8-1 was in today's environment, no way he is not fired. We are all pretty lucky that he wasn't.

True. If I remember correctly, the AD did demand that staff changes be made. I believe the S&C was let go and some defensive coaches.

Glad he was willing to make those changes. The rest is history.

I wasn't speaking specifically to the 2-8-1 season, I was more speaking to the comparison of a 3 year effort. There were scholarship restrictions, yes, but I don't think many fanbases nowadays would care. His first 5 seasons were as follows:

1987 Virginia Tech 2–9
1988 Virginia Tech 3–8
1989 Virginia Tech 6–4–1
1990 Virginia Tech 6–5
1991 Virginia Tech 5–6

In my eyes, patience is patience, regardless of whether you're a perennial power program or a bottom feeder.

See Scottie Montgomery from ECU:
2016 East Carolina 3–9
2017 East Carolina 3–9
2018 East Carolina 3–8 [Fired 11/29]

They aren't 1 for 1 comparisons, but I think it reflects that regardless of sanctions or program history, people want results by year 3 nowadays. Even our fanbase has called for Fuente's head this year, after two impressive first years:

2016 Virginia Tech 10–4
2017 Virginia Tech 9–4

It's just a different time, and I completely agree with you Beamer wouldn't have made it nowadays. And there will probably never be another like him at VT.

My favorite thing that Coach Beamer did on the field was take VT's two biggest rivalries and basically turn them to dust. Beginning in 1994, Beamer went 9-3 against WVU, and we all know what he did to the UVA rivalry. Rivalry games are different than other games. Every play the most important play of the game. He consistently had our guys ready to play against those two teams. The consistent winning over UVA also extended to recruiting when we started dominating the state of Virginia.

A great, well-deserved honor, for a Great Coach. Congrats, Beamer!
