2018 Receivers

There's been a lot of talk about the young wide receivers that must fill the Cam Philips void next year, including guys who haven't seen the field yet like Caleb Farley, Tre Turner, and Damon Hazelton. But with the emergence of a few freshmen late in the season, there's actually a ton of options at the position. Here's the rundown:

Phil Patterson, r-So.
CJ Carroll, r-Sr.
Caleb Farley, r-Fr.
Damon Hazelton, r-So.
Henri Murphy, Sr.
Tre Turner, Fr.
Samuel Denmark, r-So.
Darryle Simmons, Fr.
DeJuan Ellis, Fr.

There's a whole lot of potential here, and nearly everyone is an underclassman. I see at least 7 guys who could contribute 15+ catches next year. I predict Simmons will redshirt, even though I wasn't aware until just now that he was upgraded to a 4-star recruit. I also think Ellis will redshirt, and it's somewhat of an unknown what his exact position will be or if he will get a shot at QB at all. Turner might play but I don't see him passing enough vets to get more than 10-12 catches next year. Denmark unfortunately hasn't seen the field too much, and with guys like Grimsley and Patterson stepping up late in 2017, I'm not sure he can overtake the incumbents or newcomers like Farley and Hazelton.

I think Farley will be a #3 guy on the outside, behind Savoy and Kumah, with Hazelton in the slot. I hope we'll continue to see more of Phil Patterson and Grimsley, but that leaves little room for veterans like Carroll and Murphy. Regardless, it's extremely encouraging to see all of the young talent and depth we have at this position for next year.
