Jalen Cone, PG, 5-11, 163 Walkertown Walkertown, NC Class of either 2019 or 2020

Had a long time offer from Buzz but Coach Young has now extended an offer to allow Cone to come in either 2019 if he reclassifies or his original 2020 class.

These are all the offers I have seen posted so far but I expect news on quite a few more shortly.

They are still in the picture for 2019 Anthony Harris, an original member of the Buzz recruiting class. Continued recruiting at Paul VI though will be a major plus over the next few years with the guard talent they have in waiting. Between Coach Jackson and Coach Webster, I believe there will be a strong connection with this program.

A few other guys that @KipTJam is high on:

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

These are Portal guys that are available but I have not seen anything indicating the Hokies coaches have been to see any of these folks. A couple of those guys would be immediately available but several would not be so that is likely a key factor.

Good point, and sorry if this is the wrong thread - you + him are the only guys who I pay keen attention to when it comes to Hokies MBB recruiting.

Its the right thread, just wanted to couch it with my comment so folks don't get overly excited. But definitely the right place for that stuff.

Presumably we might have an in on the KState kid

As Kiptjam indicated, I would want to see more from this kid before being ok. Obviously Young is going to trust what Frazier has to say about him but he was a lower level three star before committing to KSU. Not sure how much he has improved in this redshirt season

That would be good news

Lots of family went to The Institute. I almost did, too. Instead, I decided to be the token Hokie among tons of Keydets n hoos (on both sides of the family). Went the Enlistment and OCS route, afterwards. My Father was '68 there in Lexington. His inner circle, is most definitely his B.Rs. I have a cousin who went back, to instruct English.

Though I didn't go there, the VMI alumni network has still been very helpful to me. Including my first job out of Tech.

Catoor

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

Don't hate to say that. I can't stand Guy, but he's got a respectable shot.

Heard some talk about Catoor, obviously he had previously committed to CMY at Wofford and is a VA native. Played two seasons with the much talked about Mac McClung. I heard he looked a bit better with McClung and was more efficient when he did not have to be the primary option, still scored pretty heavily though. I have heard though he has a lot of question marks when it comes to being able to defend at an ACC level, as he was not a particularly good defender at his current level. He also is playing against some weaker competition as far as the high school teams he is up against. He has good athleticism and is a decent shooter, but might take a while for him to adapt. Could be be a decent signing, but there are some definite concerns.

EDIT: I was wrong here, mixed up Catoor with Zac Ervin

I think you're thinking of Zac Ervin. Catoor is from FL

You are right, my mistake. Cattoor I don't know as much about.

the much talked about Mac McClung.

Don't understand the hype for McClung. Decent player on a decent Big East team. Got hops. It is solely because he's a local kid?

Don't mention this on TSL. They think he's the next Steph Curry over there.

Of course they think Beck is the next Herschel Walker, so I guess there's a mentality...

They think he's the next Steph Curry over there.

If he becomes a lottery pick, I'll chug more rails than fans at a UVa spring game.

He is hyped because he became a big star based on youtube highlights, and social media. He was being talked about coming into this year nearly as much as some of the top recruits in the country because of hype. He played decently well but its about the crazy dunking, etc.

Not committing yourself to much there considering that number is zero

Kid can play. UNC was showing late interest as well. Probably will be the only Wofford commit to flip. I could easily see him being a solid four year contributor here.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

It's likely UVa loses a hunter and we get one...I like this

Emanuel Miller has also taken VT basketball out of his bio on Twitter. I wonder if we'll see a decommit from him.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

Some info on Cone, we've got more competition for him and its a familiar face; aTm has offered him after an in home visit. Wake and Tenn also visited him this weekend as well. All schools (including us) have given him a 2019 option.

At this point ATM has to be running low on spots right? They may have had 2 guys transfer, but have 4 guys committed to this years class. They can't exactly be getting Emanuel, Cone, etc.

I think Ant Harris is more of a danger to go to a blue blood like UNC or IU who have offered him over the past week.

the numbers always work.....nothing to stop Buzz from moving someone off scholarship since its all year to year. Also nothing to stop him suggesting to others already there that they might be better off in the portal with the coaching change. Buzz moved 11 guys out of Tech in 13 months so having to only get two or three more spots woukd be cake walk for him

IU is unlikely. He wants to stay close to home

Recruit Prosim

Does anyone still consider Indiana a true blue blood? I know they have a rich history, but that's literally 30 or 40 years ago.

They did make a NCAA finals this century, but even that was 2002. To me, Indiana is basically like Georgetown. Wonderful history a LONG time ago, but no particular reason to think they'll be elite any time soon.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Both Indiana and Georgetown are in that odd tier where if they hire the right person and get back to a final four or two they'd be considered a blue blood due to their history. Though Indiana is interesting as they had very few star players, Bobby Knight just knew basketball better than everyone else. So not sure they every were really a blues blood.

Hopefully this helps us with Anthony Harris, as he will be less likely to have a starring role at UNC with Anthony and others to follow in front of him at the point.

So, you're saying he's going to UCLA FSU?

I think that's being optimistic.

Cole Anthony is a likely one-and-done, and it's not like Roy showed a ton of confidence in Seventh Woods or Leaky Black last year. Even if Harris commits to UNC but doesn't play a ton next year, he'll probably be given the keys his sophomore season after Woods graduates and Anthony (probably) goes pro.

Seventh Woods or Leaky Black

those have to be anagrams. what are their actual names?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

LOL. But seriously... Leaky is a nickname, though Seventh is a given name.

From their team bios:

Seventh Woods

Birthday is August 7th • Born Seventh Day'Vonte Woods in Columbia, S.C. • Son of Louis and Monica Woods • Is the youngest of six children • Chose his jersey number No. 21 because it's a multiple of seven and his father was born on the 21st

Leaky Black

Born Rechon Malik Black on June 14, 1999, in Concord • Son of Chon and Carla Black • Given the nickname "Leaky" by his grandmother, due to his middle name, Malik

Born Seventh Day'Vonte Woods

Would be amazing if his last name was Adventist

They should have named him "Choppin"

Speaking of Seventh Woods, he's announced that he will be transferring from UNC.

Guess he saw the writing on the wall with regards to playing time after Cole Anthony & Ant Harris committed.

Josh Hall already has an offer from the Hokies but I am not sure about Belton. Someone to keep an eye on.

Idk if it's just my perception or just because it's out of necessity, but it seems like MY is attacking this recruiting thing with unparalleled energy at the moment. I'm sure he'll slow down, but I'm impressed with his enthusiastic start.

He didn't even bother cleaning out his office at Wofford and didn't want to have the press conference to introduce him because it took away time improving the program because he knows he is behind the eight ball in this years recruiting and doesn't have a ton of players returning.

I like it. Also the fact that he's already working on 2020 guys, as well as trying to fill out his roster for next year. Hopefully he takes a short break once we can field a team next year to prepare for the long haul.

it took away time improving the program because he knows he is behind

So far, I've been impressed with his sense of urgency. It's at least comforting to know if his VT coaching stint doesn't work out, it won't be for a lack of effort.

Stay tuned, Anthony Harris decision tonight at 6:30.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I would guess it's either:

1.) Saw the other kids UNC commit, wants to get in on that right away, or

2.) Saw the other kids UNC commit, pissed off, will pick us.

We will see.

FWIW, a Rivals national basketball analyst thinks that he's UNC bound:

I don't think Cole Anthony's pending commitment to North Carolina impacts Anthony Harris much. The four-star guard has always played alongside tremendous talent at the point guard position in high school and on the travel circuit, and his situation with the Tar Heels wouldn't be any different. Plus, don't forget North Carolina is losing not just Coby White, but also Kenny Williams this spring.

In their places, the Tar Heels would enroll Anthony, if he does commit, and Jeremiah Francis, though the latter continues to work back from an injury. There are no clear-cut replacements for Williams returning and seeing that Harris is not known for being ball dependent, he would be a match on the floor alongside Anthony.

My gut says Harris will end up at North Carolina thanks to the draw of staying close to home and playing in the ACC.

https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/twitter-tuesday-anthony-har...

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Elite talent wants to play with elite talent. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Cole Anthony committing actually helped UNC land Harris (if he goes there).

The next line in the piece after what you quoted, and it's a link to the story:

These shenanigans at UNC have already been uncovered and punished by the NCAA.

I'm all for bagging on UNC when it's warranted, but they were already punished for this infraction.

Thats assuming it was Hakeem Nicks and that time frame. He left it very open ended about all the timelines for the schools involved amd didnt name the players. The NCAA punishment for the Nicks stuff was a joke though. One year post season ban and 3 scholarships per year for five years but if I am right the NCAA later relented and gave them back six of the scholarships.

He was being pursued by at least four bigger programs so no reason to go to A&M

Idk at least if he went to A&M we wouldn't have to play him. A Virginia kid just ditched us for an out of state conference rival, not for the coach that recruited him. I'd rather he went to A&M tbh.

I like his comments on 247. He doesn't have a star ranking, but that doesn't mean he won't have potential. At least he is excited about the prospect of playing ACC ball, and it looks like VT is edging out NC State.

NC State is going to go all in on Cone if Markell Johnson and/or Laque stay in the draft.

6'9 I watched some of Wofford in the tournament he seemed to be legit defensively, most saying he is a work in progress on offense. Likely sit 1 play 2. No actual link to VT, but I thought I'd post it.

I guess your coach leaving in basketball doesn't work the same as in football waivers. If it did I would expect Nolley to be gone. If somehow it does, then it would be an interesting case for a transfer getting a waiver because the coach left even though he's transferring to the former coach's new school. The portal will have many interesting cases for a while until the ncaa makes clear distinctions on what is what.

He wouldn't necessarily need a waiver to be picked up, he could sit 1, and then have 2 years to play. No actual rumors at the moment, but most reactions seem to imply he could be an ACC level contributor.

He's a good player, will find a P5 home. Hope it's with us.

(add if applicable) /s

Impossible, if true

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Definitely not a good look for the Buzz era if Delaney felt alienated from the program. There is a Baltimore connection between Delaney and Frazier although I doubt they would have faced each other on the court unless Delaney played as a freshman. Both played in prep programs in Towson MD, Delaney at Townson Catholic and Frazier at Notre Dame Preparatory School.

Just more evidence Buzz was more interested in promoting his brand (former players), than the VT brand.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Who is this Buzz that you speak of?

Brent. He means Brent.

Some clown in Texas.

Football has the same issue. This is a VT Athletics problem

While that can apply to both programs, I think they're for different reasons.

Buzz had no attachment to the school, and it showed even before he left. He would invite Jimmy Butler and other former players of his to Blacksburg to have dinner with his family, workout, play charity softball games, etc. Developing those guys is part of his coaching success and he values those relationships. He invited his guys to the place where he lived at the time. He probably never felt like he needed to get VTBB alumni buy-in, and thus didn't reach out much.

Fuente, however, just seems to be a closed door type of HC. Not saying that's the right way to go about things, because I don't feel that it is, but it's just very different from the reason basketball alum may have felt alienated vs. football alum (I imagine). Maybe I've missed it, but I have yet to see Paxton Lynch, for example, roaming around bburg.

Buzz publicized himself through the #getBETTER campaign. It showed recruits that he can develop players (NBA guys), values the relationships (stays in touch and even brings them out to events), and more. Never specifically recruiting for the Hokies, but rather for himself as a coach/mentor.

People are just projecting everything onto Buzz because they're still sour he's not the coach anymore. It's getting beyond ridiculous at this point. This isn't just an isolated thing solely because Buzz Williams was here. Players feeling left out happens across a lot of sports at VT. It's not even a new thing for basketball. You didn't see many hanging around the program with Johnson or Greenberg either. Hell, our most famous basketball alumnus is Dell Curry yet he's not near as embraced as you would think especially considering his wife was also as successful VT athlete in her own right (and I'm not even including anything about their children. I'm going back to before they were even potential recruits). Point is, they've never been that outgoing about embracing the past and promoting the program as a whole. The only sport that gets any kind of level of promotion is football* and that's limited as has been discussed in threads here a couple of weeks ago. It's not a Buzz issue. It's a VT issue.

(*TBF, its the one that's had any kind of sustained success historically so its no surprise it gets the most attention. I can understand the logic there even if I disagree with the outcome to an extent)

I disagree, football doesn't have an issue with the Delaney's of football (e.g. Tyrod, Hall ,Vick, etc) the issue is the lesser-profile players who were still major contributors like Davon Morgan or JC Coleman not being recognized.

Football also has something of a problem with career backups not feeling the love, but when there's 20-30 football alums per class there are just too many people to grant field passes or marquee game tickets to.

Monogram Club needs to get their sh*t together for all sports, but particularly football. IMO.

Read a story about an interview with Olajuwon, long ago, I believe in Sports Illustrated. Can't remember who the interviewer was, but remember that after she found out that he was probably a world class volleyball player and a killer soccer player, she asked him if there was any sport he wasn't good at. He said he couldn't swim very well at all. She then said that she had found something she was better at than he. His reply, "Yes, but I can wade out a lot farther than you." Funny the things that stick with you, and I always liked him after that.

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

There is a mix of in home visits, in school visits, offers after tournament or AAU performances, and also offers through phone communication. The majority have had at least one member of the staff present and early on CMY was at almost all the offers but I have to think now, with how many kids they need to review and see, that the entire staff are out separately to get more accomplished.

All these offers are great, but I'm not seeing too much regarding 2019. It seems we have a couple guys from the portal interested and a couple (e.g. Cone) who might reclassify to 2019. If we don't get some more bodies for 2019 soon, we are going to have an ultra-thin team.

--
"It's time to go play Virginia Tech Football longer and harder than anybody else in America!!" -- Justin Fuente
"I put a brick in Sacksburg today." -- Cam Phillips

At this point there are very few ACC-caliber players left in the '19 class. I'd rather take guys that are good enough to reclassify from '20 but might develop a little more slowly than take guys that occupy a scholarship just to fill out a roster.

2019 will be painful. Just accept that and make peace with it. No matter what happens, we just won't have the talent, depth or experience to consistently compete in the ACC next year. We all saw what Buzz Williams could do with (Sweet 16) and without (2 ACC wins) talent, expect the same from CMY.

Young has to make sure he has as much talent as possible ready to go for 2020 and beyond. That means not taking bodies this year that will tie up valuable spots in the next 2 critical recruiting classes. Plus, having a class of 7 freshmen is pretty much never a good idea.

Great points!

I seem to remember that the first year under Buzz was the establishment of his culture. Team played hard but with limited talent and wins...

I'm just excited to see a coach in his mid/late 50s who is busting his ass and smart enough to bring in young, charismatic coaches! Seems like this dude knows how to manage and lead. There's More than one way to build a program!

Yes 100%, but we have Kabongo, Radford, Palmer, Nolley, Cattoor, Bede, Wilkins, Horne. Who am I missing other than Blackshear? We must find a couple more, right? I'm all for developing 2020 and beyond, but realistically how many players do you think we will have on the 2019 roster come November?

--
"It's time to go play Virginia Tech Football longer and harder than anybody else in America!!" -- Justin Fuente
"I put a brick in Sacksburg today." -- Cam Phillips

There are three offers to kids that could reclassify to the class of 2019, including Jalen Cone. There are at least three offers to portal players. I would be surprised if we got 3 of the six. 2 is much more likely. That would give you ten bodies barring any other walk ons.

So right now Nolley is the tallest guy on the roster?

Is it basketball season yet?

Assuming Blackshear doesn't return then yes. Several of the 2019 offers are to bigs though so that might bring in one more with height.

Is Bede officially back and out of the portal? I like seeing the "this is home" on his twitter, but I didn't know how long it had been set to that.

Would it be fair to say the longer KJB waits the better the chances he returns?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Not particularly, as with all the other draft entrees, he wont know for certain which big schools have the largest hole at the post until the draft list is final. I wouldnt expect a decision before then, after that its largely what deadlines those recruiting him place on their open slots.

I am not sure CMY has realized he isn't at Wofford any more and doesn't have to throw out offers like Oprah and wait to see what is left after the ACC schools come calling. That is not to say that Tech gets its choice of players, but CMY moved up about 15-20 rungs on the pecking order. I say all of this with a wry smile, I am glad to see them hitting the recruiting trail hard since there are a lot of spots to fill and short time to get there.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

You sound a bit like a choosy beggar. Your last sentence explains and contradicts your first. He took a job with no recruits coming in, late in the cycle and any decent players thinking about transferring. He has to throw it all at the wall and see what sticks so he has some form of a basketball team in 19-20. Then, he can start to build an ACC caliber team.

I am not sure CMY has realized he isn't at Wofford any more and doesn't have to throw out offers like Oprah and wait to see what is left after the ACC schools come calling

For the class of 2018 alone, Virginia Tech offered 71 players per 247. Guess Buzz wasn't cut out for the ACC either

Actually at Wofford Young more likely did not put out offers very wide spread. Between minimal recruiting budget and narrow profile of the athletes that come to Wofford, Young and staff were likely very specific in the athletes they pursued. The further down the ladder you go the harder it is to recruit.

The competition is tougher recruiting in the ACC. Wofford recruits different types of players.

I guess you would rather have him sit back and wait for the 4 stars to come to him?

VHokie

Do you really think CMY doesn't realize he isnt at Wofford?
This take makes no sense.
I want a coach working hard and taking shots at big recruits.. I guess you think he should observe the pecking order and back off?

I also dont get your Oprah reference...
I guess you are trying to be ironic...

VHokie

You know Oprah... "YOU get an offer! AND YOU get an offer! EVERYBODY GETS AN OFFER!!!"

I have always seen small schools on the offer list of major players and figure they must hand out 50 offers to guys they would only have a one-in-a-million chance with and then offer 50 more lower rated guys they expect to have a realistic chance of grabbing. CMY has a roster that needs bodies and has been wearing out shoes and tires to try to fill it in an I was mostly making light of all of the work he has to do to just get to a full roster that it is like what I assumed Wofford had to do to accomplish the same. I must have worded it poorly based on the number of heads it went over.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Ok got it. No worries. Yes, it was the way you explauned it. Thanks for the response.

Got to think that means they aren't feeling too good about Cone.

We kinda need both, and about 5 more.

I agree wholeheartedly. I think this is more because Cone's intent is to wait until making a decision on 2019 or 2020. I think that decision is based on who from NC State stays in the draft, whether Johnson or Lecque or both. My hunch is it's going to be NC State if one of those two or both remain in the draft. That's the rumors down here in NC

I think Tennessee is more of a threat for Cone than NC State, no?

If that's the case then maybe the young man is still growing! David Robinson reportedly grew taller between high school and college, and I believe that was the story on John Salley too. On that note, I wonder what Salley is up to nowadays...?

People bitch when coaches recruit, when they don't recruit. Let the guy do his job. Buzz checked out on recruiting a year ago except for who he knew he could lead to his new home. Young seems to be working hard, let him alone to do his job

I've been keeping up this post/thread since it was created. I feel like this has been one of the better ongoing threads around here. It has mostly stayed on topic with relevant news and posts. Very little "bitching" in my opinion, no gif wars, no discussion of condiments (uh oh, did I just open a door), and no off topic banter. There has been some small discussion about Young's strategy given his unique situation and the number of offers going out. But I really haven't seen any bitching going on around here. Atticus Taylor committed to NC State yesterday. Fun fact, was going to commit to VT, but Buzz told him not to because he was leaving, tried to get him to A&M, but those pesky SEC rules prevented it from happening.

This is a fun fact.

doesn't this qualify as tampering? Telling a player not to commit to your current school because you're about to bail? WTF.

more like fraud. visit VT with no plan for offer. then immediately offer at TAMU. did it twice on the same recruiting weekend

i guess the excuse was, "well if we get an unexpected opening"

Fresh off a glowing visit to Blacksburg, Jalen Cone is teasing an announcement of some kind later today. Around the same time, 247's Chris Arvin retweeted Evan Watkins' 6-day-old tweet about good news coming for VT.

From 247's report On his OV:

"I love Coach Young," Cone said following his trip to Blacksburg. "I think so much of him. His staff was phenomenal and made it feel like home and I know keeping Coach Webster on staff was major for me because he's been there recruiting me since freshman year."

UPDATE: A new, 2nd VT CB is from Jerry Meyer, 247's Director of Basketball Scouting

UPDATE 2: 🗣📣THURSDAY THURSDAY THURSDAY

It could be VT and I hope it is but just to temper excitement just a bit, it could just be he's announcing he's officially reclassifying to 2019. His school announcement might be later.

I actually think the reclassification news is more likely today. He was live on Nolley's IG account a few days ago during his visit and I believe he said the decision would still be a little while. I'm still hopeful that maybe he changed his mind and he's seen enough and ready to commit.

@vtscottyb

Coach Webster on staff was major for me

I know he was too green for the head coaching job but tidbits like this make me think Webster is going to be an excellent head coach one day. Great pedigree (DMV native, Harvard grad, Coach K coaching tree). Clearly has a knack for recruiting, incredible mentor and based on what others have said, has the "stage presence" to be the face of the program.

The only thing that's unclear is his skill level from X's and O's standpoint.

Could be a good coach in waiting.

If you have all the other goods, not sure you need the X's and O's a la Dabo.

Football and basketball are different. Football coaches are more CEO/GM responsibility with OCs and DCs doing X's and O's. Of course many are good X's and O's guys themselves. Basketball coaches need to coach their 15 guys in practices and games and not just oversee things (there's also less to oversee). Recruit only guys like Mark Gottfried or Steve Alford don't last very long at the high levels.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

It would sure be great for the new staff to get some payoff/momentum for its first recruiting year. Lord knows they are putting in the hard work and activity so far!

Before today, there was one crystal ball for Jalen Cone. That had him going to VT from back in August.

An hour and a half ago, another crystal ball got added for VT. Idk if that means anything is coming soon, but I guess it's a good sign

Now watch him put on an FSU hat at the announcement ceremony

Not tall enough

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Hmmmmmm....

Who are our best shots for a big (or two) to play in 2019?

Saw on SBU's Twitter Davenport pushed back his commitment (was supposed to be today 5/6) due to "a change of decisions". Anyone hear/know if that plays into Tech's favor or not?

Word on 247 free side is that Samari Curtis release from Cincy LOI elevated him above Davenport... FWIW

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

a poster on another forum stated Davenport was no longer a take for CMY; don't know if there's any truth to this but it appears we're gunning for the better players now

Any word on Nysier Brooks? He's gone from being in the portal to definitely leaving Cincy.
https://local12.com/sports/uc-bearcats/big-man-brooks-announces-he-is-le...
We could definitely use his size. I keep hoping to hear Cone, Curtis, and Brooks to VT. Add those 3 in with Cattoor coming and Nolley staying and we're suddenly looking at reloading vs rebuilding.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

This is a huge get for Larranaga, as not having Dewan Hernandez last season due to the FBI basketball coach fiasco was a major blow to how Larranaga runs both ends of the floor. Brooks will fill that role immediately, which is the only major hole Miami had last season.

is he eligible?

He will be a graduate transfer so eligible immediately for one season.

He is not a graduate transfer, he would need a waiver to play.

I read an article last week that he is going to graduate after the first summer session at Cincinnati, making him immediately eligible.

If CMY can pull in a little star power this class and then fill in the major roster holes with serviceable guys in year 1, he will have a great pitch to the 2020 class to come and compete at the highest level.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

just so we can close the book on Desmond Cambridge...

Now we have to hope that CMY gets those they prioritized above him to commit or this could be painful. Things look good so far with how the Cone stuff seems to be progressing but turning him and Davenport away and missing on any of the others would not be a good look.

No set timetable that I can see and I haven't even seen confirmation that Moore has decided to reclassify to the 2019 class. He might benefit in terms of recruiting by sticking it out to 2020, where he would have a year not having to battle Jalen Cone to raise his profile. Now that Brooks is off the board, my main concern for this class is finding at least one commit with post size to come in. We have seen CMY offer plenty of 2020 and 2021 bigs but very few mentions of Tech being associated with transfer bigs or remaining 2019 bigs. CMY may be waiting to see how the Blackshear domino falls but that may put him in competition with some of the top schools in the country looking for bigs at that point if KBJ doesn't return.

I expect we can pick up a MM post after all the other P5 offers have dried up. We are literally at the bottom of the list for most of these grad transfers because we don't look competitive for 19/29.

19/29

I don't think my liver can take that.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Ojiako probably

Sounds like we're way ahead for Moore and that we're gonna hold him back in 2020. I would hope that turning Davenport away means that we're very confident in Curtis, which I imagine we would be considering his relationship with Jackson and the timing of his Release and subsequent VT offer.

We can get him back if we need to. He's only 100% committed.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Nysier Brooks to Miami.

Looks like we still have interest in Josephat Bilau. Have not heard of visit. Would be a good get.

I am not sure that Young has given him an offer, Buzz had definitely offered. I am also seeing a bunch of posts saying he cant qualify academically to get into GT. Not sure how their academics differ from ours. Rumored to be a big reason he apparently enrolled at Spire Academy in November, was in hopes of getting his academics squared away. If he can qualify, I would hope that Young does get an offer in front of him so we remain on his short list.

Ahmad Harrison, Point Guard, 6', 145 Lbs, Mount Washington School, Baltimore, MD, Class of 2021

Is that 145 lbs a typo?

Class of 2021, so probably not. Still plenty of time to grow and gain weight.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Listed 6 feet, likely 5-10 or 5-11 at 145 is not uncommon for high school non-football players. In two years he'll definitely fill out.

That would be a great early win for CMY. Fingers crossed for positive news at 4:00 today. Seems like he and Shakeel Moore had a lot of overlap - I wonder if Cone committing to VT would help or hinder efforts with Shak?

Probably not affecting too much, Moore is still a 2020 recruit that can reclassify to 2019. We still need more depth and I'm sure they'd both get some run next year at VT

I'd say help. We lost Hill, Robinson, NAW, and Outlaw. We needs guards. Why wouldn't a solid guard want to play with another solid guard?

Why wouldn't a solid guard want to play with another solid guard?

I agree, I feel like this generation (god that makes me feel old) would rather buddy up avenger style instead of feeling threatened by internal competition.

Arent those the same things, though? Buddying up creates the internal competition. If they wanted to avoid competition they would go to somewhere they could be the only star.

I think the point was contrasting "buddying up" vs "feeling threatened". healthy competition makes everyone involved better.

That put a smile on my face. If Nolley is excited, maybe Bede and possibly KBJ

This reminds me of Dashawn Hand. Hope the end result is different.

Perhaps you are confusing recruiting misses as I don't see many similarities here. Dashawn Hand was a top 5 national recruit and eliminated VT months before his announcement. If you feel compelled to make a comparison, this would be much closer to Derrick Nnadi.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Josh Sweat as well.

We were never in it with Nnadi. I am friends with his older brother. He gave us a little look because we were in VA but thats about it unfortunately. When i was talking to him about us, he shot me down quick about the interest level.

I found this TKP thread from 2013 about Nnadi and a lot of people felt very good about our chances, which included crystal balls on 247. I'm not saying you're wrong or anything but that inside info was not shared with the TKP community at the time (and I see you joined TKP in May 2013 so you missed a prime opportunity for #sauces cred).

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I just recently started engaging in our community. I didn't meet his brother till the end of 2014 when we started working together. That would have definitely been a hot take if I had known earlier. Who doesn't like extra #sauces cred.

I seem to remember it differently. Hand was seen multiple times wearing VT gear out and about, posting VT things and more. There were plenty of folks who thought he was heading to blacksburg. Then when announcement happened and he noted he choose Bama because of the degree, it kicked us in the gut even more.

So for some reason, Hand stung way more than Nnadi from what I recollect.

Hand eliminated us wayyy before his announcement. Pretty sure we didn't even make his tip 10

Seen the girl in the front row with the VT stuff on? LOL gonna suck if he doesn't pick us.

He said the key factor in his decision was, "Mike Young's style of play."

Young was hired on April 7 to replace Buzz Williams.

"He likes to play fast, he loves transition buckets and ball-screens for the guards," Cone said. "They only have one returning guard and he said he really needed someone to run the show. They're giving me the keys to the car from day one and that was the most attractive thing to me."

/s

Is it basketball season yet?

If Zach LeDay taught us anything it's that big is a state of mind.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

This is true... But PJ Horne is no Zach LeDay.

Is it basketball season yet?

LeDays numbers from his sophomore year at south Florida aren't that much better than what Horne put up last year. Not saying he's going to get to where LeDay did, but it's within the realm of possibility

My freshman year I was at Mccomas playing and I'm 6'1" and was one of the shorter guys playing, yet this guy was 5'6" at best and he grabbed 90% of rebounds in the game. I'd never seen anything like it before. He knew where to position himself and how to take the ball out of other players hands st the right moment.

Ohhhh, that makes me want to see a, NBA "Big" style commercial with Leday screaming after a big play.

I presume by that he means point guard, since those other guys are more off ball shooting guards?

I'm with you on that. Kabongo and Wilkins are definite wings with our current roster. Not really sure what Radford brings to the table, but probably not an ACC-tier PG skillset.

Wabissa Bede is not an off ball shooting guard. He is a point guard. However, Cone is a better point guard in terms of ball distribution and dribble drive control than Bede might ever be. We also do not yet have confirmation that Bede has withdrawn from the portal so that may be a factor as well.

I think Bede is who Cone was referring to as the one returning [point] guard

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

the way Bede has been hanging around with the rest of the team in pics/vids on VTMBB, and players' social media (including group photo of the team with his arm around CMY), I would be surprised if he's not back.

for contrast, Blackshear is not showing up anywhere near as much, if at all, in these posts

Now Cone needs to go to work on Ojiako and Moore.

Feel pretty good about getting Moore

And Curtis.

Rumors seem to lead to Moore staying in 2020 but commuting to VT.

Cone+Curtis+Cattoor+Nolley+Okiako is a great start for the program.

Exactly. Curtis would be a great recruit (another great recruit?) late in the process. We'd have an excellent Fr backcourt that could be ACC elite in a couple of years.

Interesting that Curtis has be quoted saying he grew up playing point and loves playing it. If Bede leaves Curtis and cone could be the points

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

In that scenario, Moore would almost certainly become a 2019 as well

Take Kobe Brown off the list

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Could definitely use his size next year because I'm not sure its legal to stack two guards on top of each other

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

I am hearing that if Blackshear does not expect to be drafted in the NBA after the combine, Coach Young is expecting a >75% chance KBJ stays in Blacksburg. It is almost sounding like the decision is NBA or VT.

Would be great if true. I think he has a decent chance of being drafted, but if he's a 2nd round pick it would be an uphill climb to even be on an NBA roster next season.

I give my typical disclaimer of not being a basketball X's and O's guy, but I've never heard a particularly persuasive argument for why KBJ should transfer, unless: 1) Mike Young's style of play simply doesn't match Blackshear's game, or 2) If VT is expected to be truly dismal (less than 10 wins).

As talented as KBJ is, I feel like he'd have as much opportunity to build on last season at VT as he would at Kentucky, Texas A&M, etc.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

If Blackshear returns, we can be a competitive team. We lose too much to be as good as last year but Cone, Nolley, Blackshear and then throw in the returners, we can challenge most teams in the ACC.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

This would absolutely shock me considering it seems like the bluest of blue bloods are even trying to make room for him.

I mean who knows if it's true and I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but don't discount the personal factor. He's spent 4 years here. Maybe he just would prefer to stay in the Burg. Plus he has legitimate all-American potential as the focal point of our team IMO. I wonder when we'll find out his decision...

I have no clue what he will do, but I have to imagine he's coming back to college whether it is with us or another school. He didn't even get invited to the draft combine. Over the last five years an average of 43 players that have attended the combine get drafted. International players don't attend the combine and take up a lot of the rest of the 60 draft picks. Only 11 total players over the last 5 years have been drafted that did not attend the combine. Odds are long that he would get drafted and surely he will be provided this data. Deadline to remove your name from the draft and come back to school is 10 days after the combine (May 29th), so we should know soon enough what he decides.

I don't think shocked is right. Would I be surprised he stayed? No. Would I be surprised if he left for a blue blood? No.

His recruitment will be open, but you would have to think VTs chances are a lot better in this scenario than if we were talking about recruiting him when he was in high school.

Going against a blue blood for a high school kid means he's quite possibly a 1-2 year player, and many times those guys get drafted for potential, so they aren't as concerned about being featured. Blackshear has one shot left to prove his game, and it makes it a lot more difficult to show your stuff when you have multiple McDonald's all Americans surrounding you. So with that caveat, and knowing he could still play against the best, but be the featured cog on the team does have quite the allure when you only have only a year left. Throw in he's been here and that comfort factor is hard to leave as well. If he has a girlfriend here that may just be the icing on the cake.

The point is, I wouldn't be surprised either way if he chose to stay or go. Certainly wouldn't be shocked if he stays.

This is exactly my take also. At VT he's almost certain to be the focal point of the offense. A 20 ppg/10 rpg senior season is not an unrealistic goal if he stays, and with Nolley, Cone and hopefully Bede, he won't have to carry the whole team.

If he goes to Kentucky, it could turn out great. Or he might score 8 ppg with 6 rpg because he's the 3rd or 4th option.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

He has to decide by May 29th I believe, so we'll know in a few weeks.

He has to decide about the NBA draft by then. He does not have to decide about where he would transfer to by then.

When does that decision have to be made by? I understand teams will re-evaluate after kids stay or come back from the draft but when would a transfer have to transfer in order to play next season?

I guess that question really depends on where you are going and by what time do you have to apply to get admitted to the school. Then there is the question of by the time you make that decision has that school filled out their roster and do you still have a scholarship offer.

Most schools are going to want their roster solidified by the time summer sessions start so the athlete can come in and start working with the team. The 1st Summer session for Virginia tech starts May 28th and you have until the second day to register. I quickly looked up Kentucky and it appears they only have a single summer and it's already started. Duke has two sessions like tech, but theirs starts on the 15th of May.

My point is the big dogs will want him, but they won't wait around to fill their roster unless they are certain he will come. I think Buzz mentioned numerous times that Wilkins was a summer enrollee and that was the latest he ever signed someone (out of necessity). The portal will certainly make this more of a common occurrence, but the big dogs will usually want a full squad of quality players instead of leaving a hole in the hopes a one year transfer will choose them. Blackshear is the best in the portal, so it is possible one of these teams holds a spot if they think he can push them over the top for a national championship.

So there isn't a set date on when he has to decide, but if I was a betting man I would say his decision comes before June 1st as that would give him time to enroll in vt's summer session, and it would give him time to apply and get into other programs second summer session.

You have to take into account that the blue bloods are some of the most impacted by players on the fringe of the draft so they are the ones with the most openings directly post draft decision day. How long those openings remain open obviously is up to the coaching staffs of each school but I wouldnt be surprised if those schools still have holes until mid June most likely.

That is what I meant. Thanks for clarifying.

I highly doubt he's getting drafted. He didn't get an invite to the Combine or the G League Elite camp. The chances of a non-invitee getting drafted are pretty slim.

As an aside for those interested, Justin Robinson got an invite to the G League Elite camp. NAW got a Combine invite but that was pretty much expected.

Ryan Kalkbrenner, Center, 6'11, 225 Lbs, Trinity Catholic, St Louis MO. Class of 2020 could possibly jump up to 2019. Coach Frazier was in on him for Kansas State prior to changing positions.

Knowing what we know now about him (and knew at the time of his hiring, but we tried to convince ourselves otherwise), it's hard not to wonder where the program would be if we had gotten Young instead of Williams back in '14.

Considering the level of success that we had in that era, the hire would have met expectations, doubtful that many folks would have been disappointed (if they're realistic). I think within a few years time, Young will have us better off than Williams did. We could gotten this train rolling 5 years ago if we hadn't jumped out of our league for Williams.

Maybe

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Or maybe we would still be bad and irrelevant.

The salty revisionist history stuff is somehow getting into the realm of message board consensus. I like the direction of the program, but lets not act like we have any idea how this is gonna go. Piling on Buzz to make ourselves feel better is an obvious coping mechanism and a bad look in general. Your post isn't the worst offender, but I think it is representative of the mental gymnastics around this subject in the last couple of months.

Piling on Buzz to make ourselves feel better is an obvious coping mechanism and a bad look in general

Yes. Thank you for this. People need to let stuff go and move on instead of rewriting the last four years to fit a narrative.

That's why I said maybe.

I really don't care about the optics of the post. It had nothing to do with piling on Buzz or being salty that he is gone. I am truly more excited for our future now under Young than the idea of moving forward with Buzz, always wondering when he is jumping ship. If that's piling on or being salty, then I don't understand the meaning of those two phrases.

Buzz did great things in a short amount of time with our team, then acted as he has a reputation for acting. So far Mike Young seems to be the real deal. I have no doubt he will have us back within a year or two, and will be better for the program in the long term.

And if it doesn't happen, I'll be dissapointed for Young. He seems like a truly great guy, who loves VT and who wants to be here.

TLDNR:

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Ugh that's a terrible look. I know they went and got Fred Hoiberg but I just cant see Nebraska as a steady top tier basketball program when you look around the Big Ten. They do however have better facilities then the Hokies, especially now that they finished the latest updates to Pinnacle Bank Arena. Place looks like a spaceship waiting to take off.

Curtis is the player they let Davenport walk for if I read this thread correctly. Then Davenport commits to Cincy and we lose out on Curtis, ouch. At this point wouldn't it be better to take guys who are committed over trying to reach in year one?

It would have been but they put off Davenport and Cambridge and both are gone now and the coaching staff is left holding the bag on this one.

Give it time. This is already the 3rd school he has committed to, maybe we can still get him /s

Also why I didn't like hearing that they had put off Davenport and Cambridge when both seemed sold on being Hokies just in case they could get Curtis. Fine line balance between needing players in the door and waiting way after last call. Hopefully they are still able to find a few solid players in the upcoming few weeks. Many of the remaining 2019 or transfers are waiting to see what openings the draft creates before making decisions.

Cambridge would have had to sit a year so I'm not so worried about him. We already have one player sitting out next year (Aluma). Is Davenport ACC level? There is so little info on him

Hey now, last call is how i met my wife! She was glancing across the bar, and I was glancing back, though she was looking at some other guy, but screw him!

Nothing wrong with that IMO. Met my wife after last call at the Cellar. She came up to talk to me while my friends were arguing with the bartender over it not being 2:00 yet.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Now you have to wonder if they press Moore to reclassify to 2019 with Curtis going to Nebraska. Actually was hoping they would leave him there to have the PG succession in order there. Staff has been relatively quiet or they put out the word that they didn't want their moves broadcasted since there hasn't been much twitter action, even with all these top AAU tournaments going on.

Not sure if its an academics thing but I would like to know why Deandre Wilkins out of High Point isn't getting more attention. 6'8, 250 lbs, rated 215 in Class of 2019. Seems like his style of play from what I see would be a good fit for us.

https://247sports.com/Player/Deandre-Wilkins-46048045/

Seems very raw. Appears to be a late to the game player. Has the body for it but still working on the basics of the game. Great long term potential but likely would need a redshirt. Also have to wonder about the academics considering he is at Massanutten .

Maybe someone can verify but basically, Buzz used up virtually every single official visit before he left, recruiting guys who would end up as A and M targets. If we can't get guys on campus officially and they can't make the trip on their own dime it's a struggle it appears.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

schools are limited to 28 paid OVs over a rolling 2 year period.

rumor is that is an issue for VT since the previous coach burned those late in his tenure, even on players he hadn't offered but surprisingly (no doubt) subsequently signed at his new gig

not going to hear anything official unless Whit or CMY says something. but CMY did not get Curtis to OV, so there is some circumstantial evidence this is the case.

maybe it's time to have a rule named after Buzz that hits a bit of a reset button for new coaches being screwed by the former coach.

A simple change would be that if you take a recruit with you, his OV counts against your new school; and the school you left gets one OV back to use by the new coach.

I know that's too reasonable for the NCAA; but it makes sense.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

What happens if this puts the new school in a deficit?

Buzz was no where close to the first, RichRod accepted the job at Michigan and called every recruit on his way back to tell WVU he quit, because he did that as WVUs coach no on could call them immediately without breaking the rules

So....how many players do we currently have?

Nolley, Horne, Kabongo, Wilkins, (maybe) Bede, Cone, Cattoor, Alume (sitting out). Is that it?

Radford and Palmer if you want to count previously recruited walk-ons.

....6-8 players, currently?

Seems like Radford would be on scholarship as well. So 9 scholarships counting Bede & Radford. Easily room to add 2-3 more players. hopefully a wing and a PF or two.
