Let's Go Canes! It's been a long 10 years.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

heck yes it has. i was still a student (tears up) while watching the canes get swept in the eastern conference finals by the pens...granted i didn't think we would make it that far but still...

edit: nvm

Where's the beef?

As a Caps homer, I love the draw they got. Feeling pretty confident against the young (but good) Hurricanes team and the fact that at least Islanders or Penguins will be eliminated before round 2. I don't see Islanders winning against Pittsburgh which would give us 4 straight years of Caps vs. Pens in 2nd round.

BACK TO BACK.... LFG!!!

GO CANES

Longest Playoff Drought is over! Probably a little too young to make a run, but they are a team capable of upsetting someone, so Washington is definitely on notice. I wouldn't be shocked to see us lose in 5 or 6, but I'm just glad I'm finally going to a playoff game for the first time in 10 loooong years. This year isn't about winning now, its about getting the youth the experience to win down the line.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

last time we went to the playoffs we were swept during the regular season by Boston but beat them to advance to eastern conf finals. hoping we can do it again, but like you intimated--to win would probably take 7 games.

Selfishly I want the caps series to go to game 7 as that was the only Caps game I could make in the first round.

I haven't watched any Hurricanes game this year, but I have heard they are a fun team to watch. I can't wait for the playoffs to to start. This is definitely the best time of the year. There is nothing better than March Madness, leading into the Stanley's Cup and Masters weekend.

Alright, I can give you a decent scouting report....

Outside of Justin Williams (C) and Jordan Staal (A) there is a lot of youth with this Canes squad. I know you all know JWilliams well, but this is his second stint with the Canes, with him scoring the Cup sealing Empty Netter for us back in 2006.

The first thing to know about Carolina is that it has an elite level defense. Doug Hamilton, Jaccob Slavin, Brett Pesce and Calvin DeHaan have combined for one of the better defensive cores in the league all year. Slavin and Pesce are home grown talent and are both signed long term, and are two of the top young defensemen in the NHL. This team is built upon suffocating defensive play, limiting shots, and preventing high quality chances. You earn your goals against them. Hamilton was acquired in a big trade with Calgary at the draft along with Michael Ferland (more on him in a few) and has come into form since the new year, outpacing all NHL defensemen in points since December 31st. Calvin DeHaan was the big offseason signing coming over from the Isles and cementing out 2nd pairing all year. Unfortunately, he messed up his hand a week ago and is likely shelved for the entirety of the playoffs. Replacing DeHaan and rounding out our 3rd pairing will be a combination of Justin Faulk, Tervor VanReimsdyk, Haydn Fleury, and recently recalled Jake Bean, who led AHL defensive rookies in points this year with 44 over 70 games en route to leading Charlotte to the best record in the AHL this season.

At forward, again its all about the youth. Sebastian Aho has been a revelation this year, with 83 points in 82 games played. What's more impressive about that mark is that he's been relatively cold the last month or so, but given his play recently, it looks like he might be about to break out again. Alongside him you will fine Nino Neiderriter, who has been on an absolute tear since joining the Canes a couple weeks before the deadline for perennially disappointing Victor Rask. Those two drive offense when they are on the ice together, routinely putting defensemen on rollerskates. Joining their line will be the aforementioned Justin Williams. You know plenty about him, so not much to say. The second line is going to be Jordan Staal alongside 18 year old rookie sensation Andrei Svechnikov. Don't let the age fool you, the kid is built like a tank and can do pretty much everything on the ice. But, he's still young, and is still prone to rookie mistakes, and I'm expecting the playoffs to overwhelm him a little bit. Along with them you'll see one man wrecking crew, Michael Ferland, who might not produce anything on the score sheet but is capable and willing to throw a big hit or two per game, even if that means playing over the edge to earn a penalty. Rounding out the rest of the offense will be role players like Jordan Martinook, Lucas Wallmark, Gregg McKegg, Brock McGinn, and Warren 'McLovin' Foegele. They all play the same kind of game, and are all able to score. Outside of Aho, there isn't a big huge scoring threat on the Canes, but they can score. Four players reached 20 goals this year, and another 3 reached 15.

In goal you will see a duo of Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney, who was claimed off waivers from Toronto right after the beginning of the year. Mrazek enters the playoffs as the unquestioned #1, with a .950 Sv% over the last 10 games of the year, capable of stealing games we shouldn't have a chance to win. But you're likely to see Mac start at least one game this year based on what the coaches deem analytically sound.

As for the coaches, you have first year head coach (and should be Jack Adams Finalist) Rod Brind'Amour leading the charge. We employ a fast tempo puck possession skate the other team off the ice kind of style while still having the defensive capability of smothering out fast break opportunities. Most games will see one of our forwards break out for a 1 on 1 with the goalie, and most nights we will outshoot the opponent. For those that follow it, we dominate Corsi advanced statistics, and are going into the playoffs as statistically the best 5 v 5 team in hockey. The PP has struggled this year, but is entering the playoffs on fire having scored in something like 6 of the last 8 PPs they were on. The PK is as good as you'd expect with a team with this defense.

If you had to ask me the biggest weakness of the team, it is youth. They just haven't been here before, and most of the team is 24 or 25 and younger. They don't know what they don't know right now, and with the pressure being amped up, nobody knows how they will respond. But they're also a team capable of pulling off the upset. On December 31st, they were 1 point out of last place in the Eastern Conference. Since then, they've had I want to say the 2nd or 3rd best record in the league, behind only Tampa and Boston during that same time. And this franchise has a history of going on runs when it does make the playoffs, having gone to at least the Eastern Conference Finals in each of the last 3 appearances (2002 Stanley Cup Runner-Up, 2006 Stanley Cup Champions, 2009 Eastern Conference Runner-up).

All that being said, I don't see the Canes winning this series. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they make a series of it. But I see this being more like the 2001 season, when we bowed out to NJ in 6 games (after going down 3-0) where the experience sets them up for future runs, than 2009 where they made a run out of nowhere. My prediction is Caps in 6.

I'm confused. You have a Flyers mascot as your logo and claim to be a Hurricanes fan?

I live in Raleigh, I'm a Canes fan. Been going to games since they played in Greensboro.

I have the Gritty avi because it's a creepy ass mascot that I find hilarious. My family is from Philly so they follow Philly sports which is why I'm familiar (and why I like the Phils, Sixers, and Eagles), but being born and raised in Raleigh, I am a Canes fan.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Yeah I'm in the same boat with the profile picture😅

When in doubt. Nap it out

My family, which lives an hour from Greensboro, and I went to see the Canes and Bruins in Greensboro their first year down there. My dad was a big Bruins fan and being from New England also was familiar with the Whalers.

Oh man you must have had a blast in 1998 when they had that playoff series against the Bruins in Greensboro. I don't remember much from that series, but I do remember that they set off fireworks in the Coliseum when the Canes won a game in OT.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

I was actually long gone by then. We went to the regular season game when I was home over Christmas.

As a Bruins fan, I should be really excited. Then I realize IF we get by Toronto, the Lightning will be waiting for us. It's really stupid the two best teams (points wise) could play in round 2. I just have a hard time seeing anyone beating them this year.

The 2015-16 and 2016-17 Caps fans feel your pain. Washington and Pittsburgh were #1 and #2 in the conference both those years but played each other in 2nd round each playoffs.

The current structure is dumb. I get rewarding the division winner but the two teams based on points shouldn't play in 2nd round.

I would be ok with the two division winners (in each conference) guaranteed into playoffs while the other 6 are based on point totals. I would also be ok with leaving it how it is where top 3 division teams making playoffs where the other 2 spots are for the wild card but still have 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, and 4v5 in the playoffs; seedings based off point totals for regular season.

Lastly but not least... Go back to re-seeding in each round based on who advanced.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

To be fair, the old way of each division winner getting the 1, 2, & 3 spots was stupid too.

I'm not sure why the NHL is so against just going 1-8 based on points in each conference. I understand they want rivalry games in the playoffs...but the playoffs is about determining the best team, not manufacturing rivalry games.

As a Pens fan, this format has been beneficial to us, but I would have much rather had the Pens/Caps series been for the ECF

Couldn't agree more. Just seed 1-8 based off of points. More often than not, you're going to get the better teams playing in the conference finals that way. Also, it's not like rivalries will just go away if this happens lol.

So the Caps will have to beat both the Penguins and Lightning as usual? Figures

Penguins are usuals but not so much Lightning as last year was the first time they played TB since the 2010-2011 season.

I expect Pens to win but I wouldn't be surprised if Trotz's system game beat Pitt's talent.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Pens getting back geno and Tanger is huge. Excited to see what Kris can do before he gets hurt in the 2nd period of game 1

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

I was hoping they'd keep Kris out until playoffs to avoid any setbacks in the last 2 games. He's so important to this teams defensive core that I don't think we'd be able to go on a run without him like in 2017, but he's made out of glass.

I used to be huge into the NHL, for some reason, I kinda split with it about 10 years ago, quit following it altogether really. No real reason, I just stopped watching. I decided to make an effort this year at getting back to watching it. All the names and faces I used to know are long since gone (except maybe Jagr, that old fuck still playing?), and being a NC resident now, I have adopted the Hurricanes as my team. So, all that being said, Let's Go Canes!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

lol no worries, you'll fit right in with this fanbase, Most haven't really paid attention the past 10 years, either. Being that awful for that long will do that.

Being that awful for that long, continuing to jack ticket prices up, and facilitating bad deals will do that.

What, signing Tomas Kaberle to a monster deal was a mistake?

Seriously, I have no idea how Rutherford was able to offload that one just a couple months later.

Everyone in the NHL needs right handed defensemen who can move the puck. Even if they move the puck dreadfully, apparently.

Agree, I hate it

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Caps were doing some pretty intense work for a pre-game skate. Rather than shooting and getting loose, they were doing drill work with the defensemen going back to recover a dump in, and then transitioning out of the zone under pressure. The Caps coaching staff must be expecting a ton of dump and chase by the Canes.

Indeed. Quite.

Waho's suck

Let's go Knights.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

bah, stupid first period. Had to expect the moment would be a little too much for the Canes, given the venue and their complete lack of experience. Leaving Ovechkin wide ass open on the PP is not an ideal way to penalty kill against the Caps.

At least it looks like they settled in and played much better once the jitters wore off. I was a little surprised about how leaky the Caps defense appeared throughout the game. The Canes were getting guys with the puck in front of the crease more often than I am used to with Holtby having to make some high pressure saves. If that keeps up, this could be a very interesting series.

But yeah, the Canes need to stop taking silly penalties. That was dumb. And we need to not suck on the PP. That would be good, too. At least Svech showed up.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Kempny going down at the end of the season has caused a little bit of a shuffle on the top defense line, with Carlson shifting over to his weaker side (though he's the best option the Caps to make that switch). Niskanen and Orlov have been shaky for a lot of the season, and if Orpik is out there you know he's not going to win many races to a puck.

but damn if Orpik wasn't knocking the shit out of guys last night!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I think Carolina played better the entire game other than on their own power plays.

Also, when defending the Caps PP, you either defend the other 4 Caps players and try to prevent any clean passes to Ovi, or you put a man on Ovi and play 4-on-3 against Oshie, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, and Carlson. At least if you don't guard Ovi you know where he is and the goalie knows where it likely will be coming from. Playing 4-on-3 is difficult against that set of completely capable playmakers. I think I saw something where, when this lineup first started, they were scoring in over a quarter of their PP. Then teams tried to cover Ovi and play 4-on-3, and their goal percentage shot up closer to 40%.

It is just a game of choosing whatever strategy is less terrible. It also doesn't help that Ovi will still get his shot off somehow when marked, he just will take less shots.

In my opinion, Canes were the clear better team 5v5, but they were a complete mess on either the PP or PK. I still don't know why Hamilton and Svechnikov aren't getting PP time at all right now, they were the guys driving the play the most when they were on the ice. I know our defense is our strength, and was impressed with the way we were able to keep the Caps in check even strength. That's not easy to do.

Crazy to think Svech just turned 19 2 weeks ago. He is going to be an absolute problem for the other teams in the Metro going forward. It stinks that Aho is in a rut right now. I think he's been playing hurt for a little over a month now, and its killed his scoring. If we could get him going at all, this series could get really interesting.

But for us, I'm literally just glad we're here. 10 years is a very long time to wait to make the playoffs in any sport, so I'm just enjoying what we got.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Thoroughly surprised at the CBJ and Tampa Bay series so far. Wonder if Columbus can avoid a repeat of last year

VB born, class of '14

This feels more real than the Caps series last year. Last year it was close games OT wins. They have dominated for long stretches of play this year. That doesn't mean anything on the long run but it feels different.

Where's the beef?

Very interesting playoff so far. If someone had told me that St. Louis would be up 2-0 on Winnipeg, NYI would be up 2-0 on Pittsburgh, and Columbus would be up 2-0 on Tampa Bay, I'd never believe you. Jets and Lightning both have to go on the road as well to try and tie it up. I still think Pittsburgh beats NYI just off of experience and talent, but Trotz has definitely figured out a recipe for beating the Pens. We'll see if it's enough.

As a Caps fan, if they advance, I think I'd prefer to see them take on the Pens over the Isles. I think Trotz would have a serious leg up coaching against the Caps.

I'm also a Caps fan. I'd rather play the Isles. Leg up in coaching or not, I think the Caps are just way deeper than them. The Pens have a tendency of playing to their competition whether that team is the Chicago Blackhawks or the Tampa Bay Lightning (regular season TB).

I want no parts of the Pens. The Isles will be chippy, but don't want the Pens at all.

I really wish Reardon would move Kuznetsov back to the first line. I know Backstrom is playing really well right now on the first line, but Kuzy was first in points scored in last year's playoffs. Also put Vrana back on the second line and Hagelin on the third.

I think Carolina wins one in Raleigh, but the Caps got their best shot tonight while not playing a good game of their own and still won. Mrazek was incredible today. Caps in 5.

I still say it goes 6. But the youth of the Canes is showing. They ar controlling play but making mistakes that the Caps are taking complete advantage of.

It's encouraging as a Canes fan to see them play like this. We are going to be seriously good in the near future, and you can see glimpses of it here and there. But they're just not ready, yet.

So that Kadri cross check was pretty bad, but I dont blame him for retaliating after marleau got run into the first panel of glass after the bench there. Esp after he got the knee to knee earlier

VB born, class of '14

He was unavailable to the media after the game which is pretty weak imo. Also, with his history he'll be watching from back home the rest of the series.

Not sure why the Pens didn't do anything to improve their defense during the off-season or before the trade deadline. It was pretty evident against the Caps last year that they had some major holes back there. They also should have traded Kessel when he wasn't a complete shell of his former self.

Note to Canes, don't poke the Russian bear.

I'm sorry? I mean, I get that Svechnikov is a kid and made a huge mistake dropping gloves there...but every time Ovi has been on the ice he has been slashing and cross checking Svech and he had enough of it. And Ovi was the one who dropped gloves first. Not defending Svech here, he is young and should know better than that. But its not like he "poked the russian bear". More like the russian bear kept poking him until he lost it. Very smart by Ovi, IMHO, because Svech was a huge bright spot in our post season run and now he may not play again in the series depending on his mental health.

Note to Canes, don't poke the Russian bear.

Given the way the Caps got their asses thoroughly handed to them for the remainder of the game after that fight, I'm pretty sure the Canes were the bear you didn't want to poke last night.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

I knew the Canes would take one. The fight had nothing to do with it. Svechnikov is dumb for doing that because he might have to sit out Thursday.

Marshall University student.

The first four goals were scored by Svech's best friends.

The Caps had about 2 shots in the 40 minutes after that fight.

The Canes have said all year that they play for each other - and you just witnessed it.

It mattered.

Yes, other guys had to score if they wanted to win. I said the Canes would take one, and they did.

Caps will take the series. Like Ovi said, it's tough to win 4 straight in the playoffs. Congrats to Carolina on their first playoff win in a decade. Wouldn't be surprised if they won another. The Caps will win the series, and this won't matter.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

I don't disagree with you there, the Canes had their way last night and for many stretches of the two games prior.

As much as I love the CAPS I'm able to watch hockey pretty objectively. While comments like "don't poke the Russian bear" are reflexive in the moment. I'd rather not see a player get knocked out whether in a fight or a cheap shot, etc.

Great game for the Canes, thorough domination all around and that's what playoff hockey looks like, including the stadium shaking at its foundation!

Let's play seven!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I honestly had no idea what happened to Svech in the stadium. It all happened right in front of me, I saw the fight start, saw him carried off, and that was it. Heard at intermission he would be out the remainder of the game and that was it. The postgame radio guy was focused on it probably a little too much for how the game actually played out, but whatever. The news today about him is good, sounds like he only has a concussion (thought it could have been worse) and is likely out Thursday, unsure about anything more.

What is surprising to me is that I think the weakness the Caps have on defense right now is starting to be exposed. The Canes forecheck, at least 5 on 5 kicked their ass last night, and has been outworking them for large stretches of the previous 2 games. And the energy the Caps are spending in the defensive zone is really impacting them on offense.

Even if they are able to get by Carolina, they're not going to have it any easier against the Isles or any other future rounds.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

I'll tell you a guy they/I miss...Jay Beagle...I'm not sure their faceoff percentage, but I'm pretty sure it's not good.

Watching all three games, I've been impressed with the Canes ability to sustain offensive zone pressure and their SOG volume is phenomenal. With that said, momentum can come in surges and the CAPS if/when they get going can be pretty dominant as well.

Game four should be interesting!

Edit: and Kempny!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

The canes have taken it to the CAPS in all three games. The CAPS look flat and uninterested this game (other than the fight), lazy passes etc.

Also is Doc Emrick the best play by play guy in sports?

Absolutely he is. I thought this was a well known fact. His vocabulary and fact he speaks in complete sentences is incredible.

Here's a Link to the 153 verbs he used in one game to describe the puck being moved.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

My wife made the comment last night that she hopes some kids somewhere are listening and taking notes because he can't do it forever and there's no one even close to him in the game right now.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

Agreed. It's not even close. He does other "similar" sports like water polo, lacrosse, and field hockey for NBC at the summer olympics and it's absolutely fantastic. I miss him being the Devils pbp guy

We are really lucky in Raleigh that we have John Forslund as our regular Play by Play guy. Doc is unquestionably #1, but I'd rank Forslund #2. Maybe not as eloquent as Doc, but he does a great job.

I'm really not looking forward to the day that NBC brings him on full time and he leaves the Canes.

I would say 100% yes.

As a caps homer, I think Joe Beninati is up there too as he has done a lot of the NBC broadcasts for non-Caps playoff games, last year especially.

What's everyone's thoughts on the Ovechkin/Svechnikov fight?

I feel bad for the kid, but at the same time, it looked like he agreed to drop gloves.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

He (Svechnikov) kept whacking at him (Ovechkin.) Whether it was bare hands or a freight training in the corner, the kid was gonna get something from Ovie. You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

This is a cherry-picked point of view. Game 1, any time Svech and Ovi were on the ice Ovi was laying hits, slashing, and cross checking him. Not saying Svech is innocent here, but it was clear from game 1 that one of Ovi's goals was to get under Svech's skin. Svech should know better and look who he is talking to before dropping gloves, I won't argue that. But you can't say "mess with the bull you get the horns" like Svech has been the instigator all series.

Did I say all series? Did I say all year? No. He nodded to Ovie in agreement. He was whacking at him for the previous 5 seconds. He messed with the bull. NOW he knows better.

To you from failing hands we throw

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

*sigh*

it never gets old, the amount of caps fans that act like Ovi is ferdinand the bull or something like that...It's all good-- he is a great player, i respect him and his talent.

Huh? You mad bro?
All I said was he kept agitating Ovie at the beginning of Game 3, and Ovie was gonna do Ovie things. The kid must have said something for him to drop the gloves, but it was mutual.

And yes, he is a freaking bull. He runs over people like a bull, skates like a bull, treats his sticks like a bull. It's not hidden, or some secret thing only Caps fans know or something. It's all out there on the ice for all to see.

Disclaimer: I'm a lifelong caps fan, and this quote is from Alan May, so this is not an unbiased take. But FWIW:

Ovi was probably frustrated at the amount of sticking the guy has done. If we went back and did the replays of every one of these games, and showed how many times that kid was cross-checking after the whistle, coming in late with the hits. There's a reason that players have been going after that guy and hitting them as hard as they can.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Ovi's gloves came off first and he grabbed Svech before he could really do anything. Not to mention he has like 40-50 lbs on the kid. There's a reason Ovi hasn't been a fight in almost 10 years. Who in their right mind would fight this guy?

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

I can answer that. Uh, no one. Ovi's off the puck antics are on another level. I haven't seen him live in a little while so maybe he's changed a bit. But when I would keep my eye on him only, off the puck he was slashing, cross checking, spearing guys in the ribs etc. So, even if you don't fight the guy you are gonna get banged up and bruised playing him regardless. A lot of players just adopted the approach of taking your licks and moving on.

He is a professional at what he does and, to me, is easily one of the most intimidating players to go up against.

I'd have to watch again, but didn't Svech say something to him right before dropping gloves...kinda like an old western showdown and Ovie was just the quicker one to "draw".

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

It looks to me like Svech just answered Ovi's question of "do you want to go?" with a "Yup". Of course it was probably in Russian.

I used to love fighting in hockey, but I think I'm growing past it. There just isn't much of a place for it anymore. Sometimes the league has to protect players from themselves, and maybe its not the best idea to condone guys throwing fists at each other's face when you're also trying to limit concussions.

Svech shouldn't have gone after Ovi. Ovi probably should have been more restrained and not gotten himself suckered into that. After the momentum the Canes had at that point, him being out for the next 5 minutes probably hurt Washington more than anything. And all it did was piss off the entire Carolina team, who proceeded to physically manhandle the Caps the rest of the game.

As an aside, last night was an awesome venue to be in. Might be the most intense crowd I've seen live, including the runs back in 2006 and 2009. That building is a nightmare for opposing teams in the playoffs.

Caps will still win this series. It's just super frustrating that Reardon won't put Kuznetsov on the first line. Backstrom was on the first line when the Caps went on that 7 game streak without winning and was put back on the first line at the end of the season. Kuzy is just lackadaisical on the second line, and Backstrom is good just about anywhere. I mean FFS, Kuzy led the playoffs in points last year, and the Caps won the cup. It takes a special kind of stupid to mess with that. He made the right decision by moving Vrana back to the second line, but if we want to wrap this series up before game 7, we're going to have to move Kuzy back to the first line.

While I am in agreement with you, I think the most pressing need is to quickly find another sixth defenseman to get the damn puck out of the zone, cause Djoos ain't cutting it. He turned it over twice giving up grade A chances in his own zone last night and you can't do that in the playoffs against anyone cause Carolina and any other team is going to make you pay. Overall he needs to get that pp going and get that team to work together getting the puck out of the zone. Cause you know the pressure is coming from the hurricanes.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The NHL officiating is a joke. Foegel not getting 5 for that board on Oshie is a terrible. Especially when Carolina has been clutching, grabbing, and coming in with elbows high all series.

Where's the beef?

They've been shit in Carolina that was a dirty hit but nah just a minor

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Agree to disagree. He saw his numbers the whole way and didnt hold/stop, drove him downward into the boards. It was 5. The refs are pussies.

Where's the beef?

Inject that Caps fan whining directly into my veins!

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

You're welcome for the hit. We'll see you back in DC. We still have home ice.

Where's the beef?

Watch the replay. It's definitely a five minute major.

But I wouldn't expect a Carolina fan to know the rules.

Where's the beef?

You can literally cherry pick any play you want and say they refs were garbage because of it. Refs have missed a ton of calls on both sides all series. I'm guessing you missed the three obvious no-calls on the Caps during the last two minutes of the game. Just accept the fact that your team was outscored 7-1 in Raleigh and hope your boys don't choke on their home ice. The Canes literally have nothing to lose and are playing like it.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Or I've already made peace with the other missed calls, which admittedly went both ways, but have a hard time letting go of an obvious 5-min major call that happened in plain sight of the officiating crew with minutes left in the game.

Congrats on whipping the Caps ass in Raleigh. Lets see how things shake put in DC on Saturday.

Edit: I am not blaming the Caps loss on the refs. They had plenty of opportunities to tie this game up and didn't finish.

Where's the beef?

I honestly think that penalty could have gone either way. It looks like he barely touches him and Oshie just loses an edge and falls. It's not like he nailed him with speed. The refs also missed an obvious 4 min high sticking on the caps like 2 minutes after that play.

That being said I hope Oshie is okay and comes back for Game 5 even though unfortunately that looked like a possible broken collar bone.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Yup, lost and edge and went into the boards. Sucks, but that's hockey.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Again, I disagree with your assesment that Osh just "lost an edge". He was clearly helped with a cross check to the back in my opinion. I'm gonna let this go though.

Congrats to you and the Hurricanes!

Where's the beef?

Im sorry, I just re-read this closely. Are you actually implying that Oshie took a dive and ran himself into the boards so hard he broke his shoulder?

cherry pick any play

Huh? That's not any play. That's a major boarding penalty, head first, where he saw numbers for a good bit of ice. That's not cherry picking. That's atrocious.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

That's a major boarding penalty

Nope, 2 mins, and that was only because Oshie got hurt.

And before you speculate about a suspension, the NHL already told the Canes there will be no hearing or suspension over it.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

and that was only because Oshie got hurt

How do you figure that? It's a clear boarding call whether he got hurt or not. The only thing the injury plays into is a 2 minute vs. 5 minute.

For what it's worth, I don't think it was a major. It was one of those bang-bang plays, and unfortunately Oshie for the worst of it. But saying it was only two minutes because Oshie got hurt is simply incorrect. Textbook boarding call.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

The ref only signaled for the penalty after he saw Oshie was hurt. It was a very delayed call, indicating had he bounced back up, play would have continued.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Oh okay. You're looking at the call itself. You're right, the ref did wait to see if he was hurt which was not a good look on his part. It's either boarding or it's not. It's like in basketball when a ref waits to see if a player misses a shot to call a foul. It's either a foul or isn't.

And don't come at me with "well, the ref wasn't going to call anything......." That doesn't excuse the hit. Or make it not a textbook penalty.

"Lost an edge and went into the boards"

That's not truly what you believe......can't be.

Nobody is saying they were trying to hurt Oshie. It's unfortunate that he got seriously hurt. But it is still a penalty, that was very borderline 5 minute major.

Since you're too f'n lazy to look it up yourself

I live in Raleigh, I'm a Canes fan. Been going to games since they played in Greensboro.

I have the Gritty avi because it's a creepy ass mascot that I find hilarious. My family is from Philly so they follow Philly sports which is why I'm familiar (and why I like the Phils, Sixers, and Eagles), but being born and raised in Raleigh, I am a Canes fan.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Thanks! 👍

Where's the beef?

Yeah I mean I literally only have 1 hometown team. I was a Flyers fan growing up, but it's different when you are able to basically follow a team in your own backyard from the first day. I mean hell I remember watching Stu Grimson get into a bloody fight with some Isles guy in our first ever preseason game in 1997. And I remember taking the 90 minute drive to Greensboro those first two years to watch games where the entire top section was literally curtained off.

And the last 10 years have been soul sucking awful for this area. Don't get me wrong being in the arena during the Finals in 2006 was awesome, but this area just turned to hockey depression for a while. Being in the arena on Monday was one of the all time top sports moments I've been to.

Anyway, I don't really have much of a point. I'm completely a Canes fan. It's just different when it's your only home team.

It's all good, I figured more people would bring it up the longer this goes on (especially if the Canes actually pull off the upset)... Figured I would get it out of the way now

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

We're good man. I would just like Canes fans to acknowledge that the Oshie hit was a major.

Not looking for a suspension. God no. I own a tom wilson jersey.

But that "hit/push" was 5-mins. It may not have impacted outcome but the caps were owed the opportunity. Especially with Osh out indefinitely.

Where's the beef?

Well looks like oshie is done for a while no idea on a time table but rierden is pissed and doesn't seem optimistic. Sure looked like a collar bone the way he was holding his shoulder

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Rierden should channel that anger into doing something useful for the team. Dirty hit or not, suspension-worthy or not, it doesn't matter when you can't score goals. I've said this a million times, but I'm going to say it again: Kuznetsov led the playoffs in points last year PLAYING ON THE FIRST LINE WITH OVI AND WILSON. Inexplicably moving him to the second line at the end of the season was the dumbest thing he has done since becoming head coach, and the Caps will pay dearly for it if he doesn't fix it.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

Agree wholeheartedly with this. Rierden is not impressing so far. I mean, sure, the guys on the ice ultimately have to execute, but he has not put them in the best position to be successful.

Thankfully he appears to have gotten over whatever it was between him and DSP. Sad it took Oshie going down to do it, but hopefully DSP can bring back a little toughness that's been mostly missing so far in this series. It may not ultimately make any difference, but I expect DSP to go balls-out now that he's being given a shot.

"Those who jump into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch."

I'm not sure its fair to suggest that there was something 'between' DSP and Reirden (unless there were reports of this and I missed it?). DSP simply wasn't performing, he deserved his demotion.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yeah he cleared waivers which means there were 30 other teams who also didn't think he was good enough. Hopefully he can return to his 2018 form.

Marshall University student.

Oh I agree, he was out of shape and had, what, a 30-game scoreless streak? No issue with him being demoted or put on waivers. And obviously the fact that he cleared waivers means that it wasn't just the caps who had concerns. However, I read recently that Reirden had resisted bringing him back in advance of the playoffs, with the clear implication that he had some issue with DSP. Maybe I misread, or read too much into it, and frankly I can't remember where I saw it.

Might as well go all in since we are here:

I'll also add that I'm not sure that we are the crazy ones on this thread? I definitely felt the way you did (but in regards to Caps fans) before this individual thread was started. I guess it is all what color lens you are looking through.

Washies fan here and I think Ovie likely did ask him to fight. The two had been going at it for several games, Ovie probably got tired of it or wanted to spark his team. Svechnikov didn't have to agree to it but you can see that he did and as soon as he did 8's gloves were off. The fight was stupid from Ovie's part... break your hand and then the best goal scorer in the league out. I don't think he's a villian for it though. He rarely fights and I've seen more than enough rumbles in the NHL where a big guy ends up going after a little guy. Vrana got his ass kicked earlier this season by a much bigger opponent.

As far as the hit on Oshie, it was complete horse shit. I watched it live, watched replays and then decided to sleep on it and rewatch a few more times. I think it looks less bad in slow mo from one angle and worse in regular speed from another. It's not a hard hit but it is completely unnecessary, obviously dangerous and I'd say the same thing if a Caps player did it. One of the most important players for the Caps is likely out for rest of the season, I think a one game suspension was warranted. I don't feel all that bad for Oshie as he gets to have his wife wait on him while he recovers and wow, that woman can stop a clock.

https://www.google.com/search?q=tj+oshie+wife&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&...

The Caps need to stop dicking around with the puck and have some urgency. Canes put so much pressure on the clears. If Washington would be smart about it there could be some serious breakaways odd man rushes. They've also got to clean up the power play. The Canes obviously aren't scared and have come to play.

Will be interesting to see how DSP does.

I would say all of that is a fair take. We disagree on Foegele/Oshie w/ the suspension; I think the injury really makes it look worse. Either way, Foegele should have pulled up, but this has been a physical series and that was a very tense stretch to end the period and the rookie made a mental mistake.

Hopefully Svech and Ferland come back for game 6 and give the Canes the spurt Smith-Pelly has given the Caps tonight.

I really didn't like the hit after watching it multiple times but the death threats are dumb. Personally, I've got too many other people to wish poor things upon than a hockey player. Funny wishes from a porn star though!

Still no first line Kuznetsov for the Caps tonight. Hagelin will play on the second line with Vrana and Kuzy with Oshie being out. The big news, though, is that Devante Smith-Pelly is back baby. 7 goals last year in the playoffs as a 4th liner. He had a pretty bad regular season, but hopefully the moment is his tonight.

Where's the beef?

Alright, now this is getting obnoxious. Just stop.

I get how you feel, because I can be a dick that hones in on something I deem logical and then I won't let it go, but I'd like to read something worthwhile on here regarding other folks thoughts on their teams, the games and the playoffs rather than wading through 38 comments of nonsense. The Canes fans aren't rooting for Duke basketball or Miami football. Let it go.

Yeah, I'm as big a Caps fan as anyone here, but you did not necessarily make us look good last night. A little banter is fine, but you definitely were being a little obnoxious for a forum that isn't exclusive to Caps fan.

Oshie out with a broken collarbone. Excuse my language but Fuck. Losing him and having Kempny out for playoffs are major blows for the Caps repeat chances.

I still think that play warrants a suspension or some type of suspension or fine but I don't understand the league and its punishments.

You'd think the guy would maybe at least apologize. Hell even Ovie said he didn't hope that Svechnikov was hurt too bad.

I know little about Seigenthaler #34 on the Caps but I thought he played great paired along with Carlson. Hopefully he can step up for Kempny.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Seigenthaler has been getting better but I still worry on our D play especially orlov at times is reckless as hell with the puck. Loving what we saw aggression wise last night but still am worried about our defending at times

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I don't think they repeat with the loss of Oshbabe and Kempny. I'm hoping for a six year run like the Blackhawks had a starting a decade ago where they won every year. Of course that is some seriously wishful thinking

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Yeah, Orlov had a pass last night early on in the Caps zone that was so bad I almost threw up. Canes got a chance off of it too. That's something they'll capitalize off of in Raleigh.

While Oshie and Kempny are out, it definitely helps our chances that the Pens and Lightning are already knocked out. I know people are going to reply with "well if the Lightning and Pens were really better, they would have won or, at the very least, not gotten swept." That's fair, but it's also fair to say the Caps get every team's best shot as defending champions. The Lightning and Pen's best shots worry me more than anyone else in the East to be honest.

Poor passing has plagued the CAPS all series. It was nice to see the Canes return the favor a couple of times.

That being said, the CAPS played their best game last night and if they continue to trend in that direction they could make a push for the Cup.

Namely DSP last season. I'm thinking Dowd could be that player this season if we make a run. His penalty shot was BEAUTIFUL last night, and he showed he was capable of scoring during the regular season. I hope he has some confidence now.

Let's get this thread back on track a little...is it an advantage or disadvantage to sweep a series if others are going 6-7 games? Is extra rest beneficial? Will that cool off teams like CBJ and the Islanders?

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I'd call it a net positive because of the reduced potential for serious injuries but I do think an extended time off can disrupt a team's rhythm. Also there's something to be said for a team's confidence moving forward when they've already had to close out a game 7.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I've always felt that unless you're trying to come back from injury, it's a disadvantage because it totally kills any rhythm you had. Would be interesting to see if there's aa correlation between # of days off and game 1 loss % in the subsequent series.

I haven't see this written anywhere, so I'll ask. Do the capitals now have home ice advantage throughout the playoffs? with losses to tampa, calgary, they have the most standings points among division winners.

Don't even look that far ahead. One game and series at a time.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

The only team they would not have home ice advantage over would be the Bruins if they were to play them in the Eastern Conference Finals.

And as a Bruins fan that wouldn't matter, because we can't beat the Caps

Given the way every other series has gone, I'm not sure home ice means jack this year.

Columbus looks scary. They loaded up at the deadline and sold their future to win now. Took them a while but they finally put it together and they look dangerous. If they can play to the best of their abilities, they might be the best team remaining, including the series that haven't ended.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Everything is wide open. From the East, I'd be pretty surprised if the Islanders or Canes advanced to the finals. From the West, I like the Vegas/SJ winner to make it, but who the hell knows.

It would be very nice for Kuzy to wake the hell up. Please just shoot the fucking puck and stop trying to be so damn cute by making the extra unnecessary pass/move

Completely agree. Backy has really picked up the slack but with Oshie out, Kuzy needs to start showing up ASAP.

Alright, I keep hearing this reference to a "slingshot" play in hockey. What does it mean?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

It's basically a flea flicker. You give it to a front man and then he gives it to the dude behind him when he crosses mid ice. The options should be better when you change the point of attack coming into the offensive zone. Doesn't always work as we found out in game 4.

The team just has a lot of fun out there, and they give it their absolute all every shift. They completely bought into the Brind'Amour philosophy and its been something else to watch develop.

They better bring back the Storm Surge and keep embracing the Bunch of Jerks moniker next year.

How was it?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Loud.

I had lower level tickets for Game 3 and it was a mad house. The noise level is oppressive down there. Had upper corner tickets about 2 rows from the top last night and it was still loud as hell. And before someone says it, no, they don't pipe in noise, that's silly. The arena was designed specifically to trap and redirect noise to the playing surface to help increase home court/ice advantage for NCSU and the Canes much like in the same way the Seahawks stadium was built to do the same in football. But it also doesn't hurt that people were out tailgating in the lots from as early as noon yesterday before the game. We got out there at 5, and it was already pretty packed.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

That's got to be a fun experience. I went there a few years back for the opening round of the NCAA tourney with a free ticket from a friend. Wasn't loud at all. Of course there as a wide mix of fans supporting like eight teams and a third of the people there were LOLUVA fans.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Its difficult to really explain, but people just go nuthouse about the Canes in the playoffs around here. Complete bandwagon effect, but holy hell the bandwagon brings the noise.

I think a large part of it is that most of the year, this area is fragmented between 3 main bases (Duke/UNC/State) and this is the one team that unites the region. And then when the games come, they bring a collegiate fanbase mindset to the games, because that's all they know. The difference I am seeing between now and the 2002 or 2006 runs is that I just haven't run into the kind of people who know nothing about the sport. They were all over the place back then, which leads me to think that building will fill up again regularly as long as the team is good.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Embellishment? Wow

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Well after that no goal call... I'll just say tonight was not the caps night

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Looks like the Caps are back to jacking off in their own zone with no sense of urgency clearing or on the PP. I don't understand why this team has lapses like this so often.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Caps have no life whatsoever. Hope they show up for game 7 in DC. Although they are 2-5 in the last 7 game sevens at home. Yikes.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Whether you agree with the no goal call or not, it absolutely does not excuse the caps standing behind their own net and literally having a Canes player come take the puck from them to score yet another goal. Pathetic effort again. If they can't play hard in the playoffs, they can't win. Incredibly frustrating.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

Well, they only would have been down 1 with one of the best one man advantage teams. So I disagree.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Completely agree. They just get lazy as hell and refuse to play for long stretches of games. They won't win when they shut it off like that. I just don't get it.

Old self? His previous old self, I didn't find him to be a fiery leader. He's playing out of his mind right now and the team needs to follow suit.

Another awful performance by the Caps on the road. Kuznetsov should just get demoted to the Hershey Bears. Refs didn't help at all. That embellishment call on Orlov was horrible, the disallowed goal call was horrible, and feeding off Carolina's perpetual booing all night was horrible. To be fair, Caps wouldn't have scored on that power play, they still would have lost if they tied it at 3, and part of what makes Carolina so good is their home crowd.

I hope the Caps have their shit together in game 7. Carolina is a young team playing in a game 7 on the road, so they're not going to have the mental advantage. Caps have to take advantage.

Kuzy is becoming a slight issue he was huge last year but this postseason he has been anonymous I still wonder if slotting him to the top line wouldn't help but I'm no coach to be frank. His confidence looks shot at times

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I think he just likes playing with Ovi. Ovi is always in the right spot and can put the puck away. On the second line, he has Vrana and now Hagelin. I think his confidence in them, or lack thereof, is why he is so lackadaisical right now. I think Backstrom can be good on any line because he's that good of a passer. I think Backstrom should stay on the first line for game 7 just so we go with what's been working at home, but against the Isles, those two have to switch.

Refs didn't help at all.

The officiating in the playoffs across the NHL has been really poor. That Bruins-Leafs game where Kadri lost his cool (not hard, to be fair) comes to mind as a particularly egregious example.

People talk about "playoff hockey," but I think it's being exacerbated by refs swallowing their whistle too often and letting players get away with too much and the games get far chippier than they need to be if they'd just call things early on to set the tone.

Post-season = fewer calls. That's normal, and expected.

There have been some *egregious* calls in just the last two games that are completely and totally unacceptable.

You cannot call goalie interference on Carlson when the CAR goalie was clearly out of the net. You cannot call embellishment on Orlov and ALSO CALL A HOLD ON CAROLINA!

I'm sure there have been piss-poor calls that went the Canes way, it would be idiotic to suggest otherwise but the NHL has had a problem with their officiating for years and seems wholly uninterested in fixing it.

Fuck you Bettman.

Siegenthaler was slashed right before the second goal too. Led to an immediate turnover and goal for Carolina.

Can't believe the upsets this year. Even with my Pens being shut down its been a great Stanley Cup playoff first round!

Great series win for Dallas!

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Yeah it's been amazing. And it it will be nice to see a cup winner that hasn't won in a while again. If Toronto wins and the Canes squeak out a win against the Caps in game 7, these are the remaining teams last cup:

Canes: 05-06 (12 seasons)
Avs: 00-01 (16 seasons)
Stars 98-99 (18 seasons)
Islanders 82-83 (34 seasons)
Leafs 66-67 (50 seasons)
Sharks/Kinghts - Never
Blues - Never
Blue Jackets - Never

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

and this is why I love playoff hockey!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Personal opinion: Caps win this one by a couple goals.

But.... if you believe in history and trends and all that, the Canes are 4-0 in Game 7 since moving from Hartford. 2-0 at home, 2-0 on the road, with both road wins coming either in OT or with less than a minute in regulation. And the team is captained by Justin Williams aka Mr Game 7.

Hopefully we get Svech back, and we are rolling the best lineup we can. Martinook played really well last night, and the team was able to contain the Caps a hell of a lot better than they did the previous game.

That said, win or lose, its been a fun series and a fun season. Hopefully the Canes are going to be able to carry this momentum into the future and continue to build on the fanbase that came alive this series.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Yeah, it's not the Canes that worry me. Like you said, it's this guy.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

interestingly enough, that reputation began with the Canes when he scored in both Game 7s for us back in 2006, both to put the game out of reach for the opponent. Once against Buffalo with 50 seconds remaining to send them to the Finals and the empty netter against Edmonton to win the Cup.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Justin Williams is gonna make a hell of a coach!!!

I'm actually going to say the Canes win game 7, CAPS playoff history would suggest so!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

When he retires, I think Brind'Amour is reserving a spot for him on the coaching staff. The two loved playing together, and Brindy being a coach was one of the big reasons he came back. I have heard Williams say before that he wishes he never was traded away, but given the number of Cups he won in LA, I think he made out alright.

Plus, our power play needs all the coaching help it can get. Because its just utter crap under Brindy, and has been for a while. He's a great head coach, but man they need to delegate the PP to a specialist. We literally have one line that only passes, and another line that only shoots. And the one that only passes gets the most PP time.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

The Caps only have one power play line that can even enter the offensive zone, and even then they can't shoot or pass. Count your blessings.

Too busy planning ways to run into the goalie.

Just saw on Twitter that Carl Hagelin is 8-1 in game 7s. He has been huge on the PK for the Caps since being acquired at the trade deadline. Hopefully he can provide an offensive spark in game 7.

At the very least, we have someone in red who we can bring up when it is mentioned that Justin Williams is 7-1 in game 7s (yes, I know that 1 loss was in a Caps uniform).
