Ryan Willis named the starting QB, Hendon Hooker is the backup

Fuente announced today that Willis will be QB1. Hooker will be the backup, and Quincy Patterson will be the third-string QB as the season starts.

I'm ok with it

Let's Go

HOKIES

I had high hopes for QP when he got here but this hype train sure is taking a long time to leave the station.

Feel the same way. I had to keep reminding myself that there were only two coaches on his varsity football team his senior year of high school. QP having another season to marinate isn't a bad thing.

No doubt that Fuente is going to put together a "Third and Logan" package that we'll use like other teams use a wildcat option.

I personally hate using him this way unless it sets up a pass at some point. If all you ever do is run it when you bring him in then you are eventually just going to start getting stuffed every time. I feel like this was the case last year. Now, that being said, if you run it enough then you will open up a long pass play at some point as the everyone on D moves up to stuff the run.

Fuente is sophisticated enough to understand this.

I envision a psuedo-Chris Leak/Tim Tebow situation like Florida in 2006. Willis is the starter, HH is the true backup and QP packages when appropriate.

Lmao it's almost like he's been here for less than a year

Should have a good showing on offense against a depleted BC team given what we return. If we don't, I will be much more anxious about this season.

Agreed. Decided today my bold prediction is that we beat BC by over 14 (maybe not that bold?).

Me on QP right now:

Really want him to develop enough this year to become a realistic option as QB1 in 2020. He's got the physical and mental gifts to be a stud. Hopefully he can be a beast scout QB this year and really challenge Hooker for the starting spot in the spring.

I'm more in the camp of "Good for Hooker." The fanbase is so vocal about QP2 and wanting him, it must suck being a 4* recruit and most of the fans just want the guy behind you to play. Like, he had offers to Clemson, Oregon, and Tennessee.

I hope he gets his shot, hell, I hope they all do.

QP made Elite 11. Trent Dilfer predicted he's going to be a Hesiman candiate when QP he was 17. That's the reason why the fanbase expects him to at least be the starter at some point.

At some point is a lot different than right now as the first game as a redshirt freshman. The fan base needs to connect expectations and timing.

It's almost like another QB from the same Elite 11 came right in and had the greatest freshman season in decades, and some folks expect it should have happened twice in the same year.

My 2019 Season Challenge: only comment with Star Wars memes.

I get it, I'm excited about QP2 as well. The fact of the matter is we don't know what the progressions of the QBs are. The coaching staff is pretty tight lipped about it and outside of some blow out games, we have seen H2 or QP2 really spin it.

What I was saying before, if I'm Hendon, man it would suck to hear that the next guy is better than you all the time when the people saying it have no measuring stick besides this Elite 11 footage.

What would he expect though? Outside of a 69 yard run, Hooker hasn't really performed in a public venue.

That's exactly what I am saying though. QP2 hasn't performed either. There is just a media piece out there from a camp and the fanbase is making its decision on that.

Obligatory...Nice and also...

counter-point: maybe trent dilfer hasn't done anything to establish himself as a great talent evaluator?

I'm going to have to defend Trent Dilfer a little bit here. He has played a lot of snaps at the highest level so you'd think he can recognize someone who can play the same position well and someone who can't...

But how well can he see through all his tears? I have never seen a grown man cry more that Dilfer.

Is Trent Dilfer Elite?

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

he promptly turned around and handed it off to jamal lewis

im aware trent dilfer played in the NFL, but being a good athlete doesn't automatically make you a good judge of talent...see john elway and the QBs for the broncos the past few seasons, michael jordan and basically any running of a basketball team, etc

dilfer has no track record of success to fall back on

What I'm getting from this is to not listen Trent Dilfer lol.

He purportedly had an excellent scrimmage last weekend. I think he'll make a good run at it next spring

QP made Elite 11.

So did Andrew Ford. He ended up at UMASS.

If I remember correctly there are two things called Elite 11 and the one Andrew Ford was a part of the lesser one

Hooker and Burmeister. He's going to have to take the next step to beat out the both of them.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Hooker will start next year.

Bold prediction. My #sauces said hooker was #3 behind Burmeister if the NCAA had approved the waiver. After he was denied, he stopped getting first team reps.

what I heard from earlier in camp was:
1/2 - Willis
1/2 - Burmeister
3 - Hooker
4 - Patterson

But like I said, they had to adjust once it was more than likely Burmeister wasn't going play this season (can't waste too many 1st team reps expecting the NCAA to come through)

I have no objections.

I don't think you can quantify the importance of his enthusiasm and fire.

My hope is we add him to the list of QBs to never lose to UVA.

Say what you will about his talent and decision making, but you can't deny his work ethic and competitiveness. Walked away from a scholarship and chose to walk on at Virginia Tech. And then won the starting job. The dude is a fighter.

First - congrats to Ryan and let's hope he crushes it this year as he has the physical gifts and supporting cast to do so. He just needs to do what has been talked about many times - improve his reads, mental awareness and game savvy through his knowledge and ability to manage his emotions in the moment.

As far as some of the disappointed comments on QP - they are wildly unjustified. Here are the facts:
1) QP is a redshirt freshman. Read that again.
2) QP was highly rated as a prospect due to his potential NOT due to his ability to play right then. Think of a big center in basketball who has the talent, but hasn't refined that talent into skill - YET.
3) QP basically has zero experience passing the ball in any sort of complex passing tree. See point #2
4) QP came to VT as the coaches sold him on their ability to develop him over time the right way. He knows he needs to keep working and if he is a 2 year starter we should be pleased with that - 3 year would be a bonus.

Most QB's are not ready to play at this level (Tua and Trevor) aside that early and QP especially as we went after him based on his incredibly high ceiling in all areas of the game - including leadership.

I'm personally happy with where he is and want him to keep working and stay the course as I think he will be just fine and a future star.

We had the best dunker in the country that year. Also for you guys wanting to let QP develop with time. I remember not that long ago, the deafening chants "We want Tyrod, we want Tyrod" before he had EVER been in a college game. Fans just want what they want, plus we pay the bills so often times the fan base gets what we ask for.

Pour some Beer on it

Keep in mind that Glennon was our starting QB; that helps in justifying the "we want Tyrod" chants.

uva - the taint of the ACC

This. At the time his terrible decision making and errant passes made him pretty well hated in Lane Stadium if I remember correctly. He ruined Tyrod's redshirt two years in a row, which likely cost us a 2011 ACC championship and threw off our QB rotation depth and forced Logan to play a year earlier. With Tyrod in 2011, we win the ACC and probably play in a higher bowl and don't have to witness the refs screw us on the Danny Coale catch vs Michigan. Fuckin Glennon!

I'm pretty sure Glennon started back-to-back seasons with an interception as his first pass of the year. 2007 & 2008

Was going to post this same fun fact.

Uh, it was the coaches decision to burn Tyrod's redshirt both years, not Glennon's. He just did what the coaches asked him to do.

Hatin' on a former (or even current) player because he didn't live up to YOUR expectations is bad form.

Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Glennon's poor performance DID directly lead to the burning of Tyrod's redshirt two years in a row. That has nothing to do with anyone's expectations. Now the rest of my statement was pure opinion and conjecture written in jest. Its friday. Relax.

Not necessarily disagreeing that Tyrod was needed in 2008, but Glennon was far from the only one at fault for that. The offensive line was horrendous to start that year and Boykin, Coale, and Roberts were all freshmen and not able to make plays like they would in the following years. Glennon didn't have the ability to make something out of nothing like Tyrod did, so there we were.

Glennon was still the ACC Championship game MVP that year with a more experienced OL and WR corps.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

A lot of people are forgetting that Tyrod was so horrible in the 2008 Duke game that Lane Stadium was chanting we want Glennon.

He ruined Tyrod's redshirt two years in a row

Which also then led to us having go get a transfer in Brewer, and another transfer for Evans, whose decision to go pro early forced JJ into action before he was supposed to, where if that hadn't happened Willis probably never would have transferred to VT, and then either Hooker or QP3 would be the starter this year.

Fucking Glennon.

s/

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

In a (slite) defense of Glennon, he started a year earlier than he should've in 2006 because of Marcus Vick being Marcus. Give Glennon a year more to develop without getting thrown to the wolves, and the hole sequence of events is greatly altered.

As a young man in my early 20's, I thought it was pretty funny. Now I find it crass and embarrassing, along with the "Sit down, you suck" chants when someone fouls out. As sports fans, our culture should respect the competition much more, but that's a topic for an O.T. thread of its own. Just ask yourself "What would Frank do?"

good luck getting that to catch on in literally all of New England

I disagree that he randomly blossomed in the 2nd half of last season. Buzz was forced to use him more and he used the talent he already had to do some awesome things.

Fair, but was Blackshear as highly ranked as QP?

Similar

QP wasn't in the top 5 qbs either as a pocket passer or dual threat (pocket passers are usually more successful QP is a dual threat). In fact Phil Steele (decently accurate on recruiting) didn't even have him as a top 20 QB in class. The idea that Quincy was that much more highly rated than the guys we usually get just isn't true.

There were rumblings about how good he was at elite 11 sure, but how much of that is just because he's big? We heard the same type of thing about Logan Thomas and Bucky Hodges and neither of them ever got the throwing motion down.

Pretty sure LT is our all time passing leader

Recruit Prosim

Was he ever a brilliantly accurate passer? He also started for three years who else has done that here? Inflated numbers. What you said is clearly irrelevant to the point I was making. Which is: Guys are overrated by size plain and simple.

But I feel like you know this and just enjoy being a "well acktually [strawman]" guy.

Well actually, he has the third most yards in a single season. More than Tyrod, Mike, Marcus, Glennon, JJ, Brewer, Bryan Randall, or Druckenmiller.

I never said he was a super accurate passer, but he was effective anyway.

Maybe you shouldn't get so angry at me for making conversation. I wasn't trying to argue with you in the first place. Just trying to add to the conversation. But based on your comment you had already decided you didn't want to hear what I had to say

Traditionally in the Coastal, a returning starting QB is key. This is good news. Willis was above average last year and will be better.

Agreed. I am also encouraged by the supporting cast. I believe that this will ultimately help mask some of his weaknesses as it will help avoid the do too much mentality.

Willis was above average last year

Did pretty damn well stepping in especially in a WR room with few established vets. I know we feel great about WR now, but we had Kumah and Patterson (Cunningham at TE) as the experienced guys last year. Hazelton, Turner, Heze, and Keene (TE) were all new. That whole passing unit came together and can really step forward now.

You can judge with reasonably good accuracy which teams will do better in any given year, based on the experience and age of that team's QB. Senior QB's are generally better than Juniors, who are better than Sophmores, etc. There's a lot of mental development that occurs in the male brain between the ages of 19 & 23. Well, hopefully, at least.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I'll have you know I worked very hard during that age range to stunt that growth.

I knew a lot of people who lost a lot of brain cells in those years, too.

Yeah but Willis has a bit more than Marcus "Blocking? We talkin' 'bout blocking?" Davis and the paperboy to throw to.

Leonard. Duh.

I agree on Hendon. He is also someone I am rooting for to develop into the player he can become as he has all the tools. You need at least 2 viable QB's in today's game.

I am anxious to see them play to see the improvements and/or areas of concern

With our schedule, my PRAYER is that there are more than a few 2nd half's of games where Hendon (and lots of other 2s and 3s) get the chance for quality playing time!

A healthy and rested first team and much more experienced back-ups will be a huge advantage later in the year for those games in Miami and South Bend!

Come to think of it...what a gift for 2020!

Not surprised on Willis being the starter.

Disappointed that QP isn't the backup. He's an Elite 11 QB. Given our current state of recruiting, its really in our best interests to make sure our elite recruits see the field and contribute as soon as they are able.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

His urgency clock is not ticking quite yet. Devon Hunter, on the other hand?

ugh, yeah... forgot about him

Yeah, that's a kid that needs to see the field and contribute this year.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

I think Hunter is a guy who has handled his situation extremely well. He could have easily been a bust due to broken confidence from the high expectations but he was smart enough to know he could get there, but he needed time so he took the redshirt last year. I think that decision was a great one.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Just curious as I can read the main stream stuff but don't get to hear the down low good reporting. What happened to Hunter? I know when he came we were pretty skill player heavy, but last year he couldnt make any contribution to the Swiss cheese? Can he not just pick up a D1 defense? I know they have moved him 1-2 times.

Hunter is your classic strong safety... Play close to the LOS, support the run, big hitter, cover the TE, blow up some screens. In Foster's defense, this is the "Rover" position. Hunter's hips are not the best and his technique was a little off from where it needed to be as a Freshman. Reggie Floyd stepped in and has solidified that role now and is only one clock year older than Hunter- though Hunter got some more separation with a redshirt. At any rate, Hunter is basically a rover only. He can't cover well enough to play free saferty, and our whip LB position is basically now a 3rd CB, which again exposes his hips in coverage. His main issue is Reggie Floyd being a damn good player. Hunter needs to be the solid #2 there this year though,IMO- or he could finish his career at another school.

Struggled in coverage playing at the whip spot. He was a phenomenal athlete in high school who mostly sat back at safety and went after the ball. Was an adjustment going to Foster's defensive scheme, but hopefully the move to Rover and redshirt year have boosted his development and confidence.

I blame that douche from his commitment announcement

I implore you to look up the history of elite 11 QBs. There are tons of flops who were much higher ranked than QP and failed at blue blood schools.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

As long as he is back to gunslinger mode I am good with this! BC game can't get here soon enough

Time to go to work. Great to have a returning starter.

Bold prediction: I think Burmeister is the guy in 2020. He may not have a cannon arm but I think he's got the moxie and skills in the read option run game to be a starter.

Congrats to Willis. Good news for Hooker is that as QB2 he's everyone's favorite player.

Quincy Patterson, if you read this, take your time bud. I'd rather have two great years than rushed into action to early and ruin a promising career!

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

I think with our QB room and lineup, the coaches have the ability to be more risky with #2 and #3 coming in. Last year with our #1 injured, they didn't use HH as much for fear of running out of QBs. I think they won't have to worry about that as much this year. Got a good stable.

I feel like it was specifically discussed last year that Fuente's #2 is a "pure backup" who prepares as a starter to step in and will basically never get in the game no matter what unless there is an injury to #1 and his #3 is more of his pet project/experiment that could get game experience in certain situations. Thus QP being "#3" isn't really a big deal or an indictment of his future prospects. But maybe everyone forgot that.

Congrats to Willis. As I read down thru this, I understand everyone wanting QP to be the guy bc of the hype- but have we all collectively forgotten how insanely fast H2 was? I think itd be badass for him to start, imagine the speed option plays and how he can improvise. More than likely, consistency is all that separates H2 and QP and Burmeister anyways

Honestly, HH is the QB on our team that I am the most excited about. QP, if he improves mechanics, may be the better pro-style QB, but HH is a threat to score any time he touches the ball from anywhere on the field... with his arm or his feet. College defenses have historically not been good at stopping a super-fast strong armed QB with talented receivers...

What if Fuente finally got to coach the same QB for two (full) seasons in a row. Wouldn't that be something?

Twitter me

Well when you put it that way...

To be completely honest, I'm really glad Willis got the nod (though I expected it) and has HH and QP3 backing him. He showed some real flashes of brilliance last year, and has acknowledged that what everyone griped about all season (being able to read a defense so Corn can use the full playbook) is the main thing he's been actively working on. I really think Willis has the potential to be a fantastic QB, especially since he can throw some really pretty passes on top of being (pick one) "deceptively quick"/"a real student of the game"/ "scrappy"/"sneaky athletic".
